- Today we're discussing some of the most obscure (and totally useless) easter eggs and fun facts in Fighting Games! From Third Strike to Skullgirls, there's a lot of super hidden stuff in here that a bunch of you probably haven't heard about before, and make sure to let me know down in the comments if there's any I forgot!

In Blazblue Platinum the Trinity's 5A is a punch where she randomly throws out rock, paper, or scissors. It's just cosmetic unless it's a mirror match, where if they clash it turns into actual RPS where the winner gets the hit.

In BlazBlue, Mai is a character with a unique sense of taste based on the feelings of the chef rather than the food itself. There are moments where she survives Noel’s infamous cooking as a result.
This was incorporated into BBTAG’s gameplay so that Teddie’s Mystery Food X heals her instead of poisons her.
Also, the Cerebella cat exists because it’s MikeZ’s only attempt at animation. They also put that cat in Indivisible as a secret boss.
The thumbnail has always been my favorite fighting game move. Having Alex jump up and face fuck a giant golden robot simply never gets old. What's more 'merica than that?
Best easter egg for me is the fact that Bryan (cannonically a masochist in the Tekken series) has different animations (and can even gain a little health) from certain throws.
It's hilarious how the most sadistic acting character in the Tekken series is just a masochist, taking in the pain and loving it. Bryan's just kinda fucked up lol
Makes it even funny when he DOESN'T get health from throws, it applies even Bryan genuinely got hurt them.
Not just throws but also Anna/Nina's stomp and also Nina's FF+3, it's a kick in the nuts and if it's on Counter Hit, Bryan would still laugh and gain a tiny bit of health back
Rugal Bernstein and Wolfgang Krauser have an intro with each other in kof98UM because they both have the Kaiser Wave as a move and they start a match by shooting it at each other.
The thing is They didn’t animate this intro. Instead of making them do animations they literally just made them do the moves at each other because krauser didn’t have an intro like this as he debuted after rugal died. Rugal also shoots his Kaiser wave first because it’s much slower to creat the illusion of them shooting them at the same time (if krauser shot earlier it would just snipe rugal because his has more start up).
Because of this if you skip the intro during a specific time frame krauser will get hit but rugals Kaiser wave and start the match with less hp and farther away.
I like the easter egg in the Fist of the North Star fighting game where using Kenshiro's Hokuto Zankai Ken against Souther plays out like it does in the anime with Souther taunting Ken as the attack fails due to his Dextrocardia.

i don’t remember if it’s blazblue calamity trigger or continuum shift, but if noel does a long enough combo on litchi she’ll say “your breasts are illegal!”
melty blood type lumina also has one i like - if you win 10 times with red arcueid, her victory quote will have her return to her normal personality and say that the fights were “a great way to relieve stress”
One other thing about litchi is that she's the only character in the entire game who actually recognises when she's in a mirror match; her intro will change to saying something along the lines of "what?! a lookalike?".
You have to do a specific number of hits on litchi as Noel and litchi has to neutral tech
Adding onto Alex having specific command grab animations depending on height in TvC, his Heavy Flash Chop could be charged up. At full charge, he just does several back to back chops if it hits. When he does this to a small character, he has to crouch down to hit 'em with the chops.
He also has his back turned version of his slams including the level 3 to go with that. he's also one of the two characters with a snap back in the game.
So his sfv missed super animation is a reference to his full charge flash chop in TvC

In Art of Fighting 3 if you play a character on their birthday they would have infinite meter.
Every single taunt in skullgirls does something different! Some are useful, like Big Band's empowering his supers and Beowulf building his hype resource, some have a niche use like Fukua's restoring lost health from holding her clones and Umbrella's reducing her hunger meter, but some are just cosmetic, like Parasouls making the next egret call say "Well, excuuuuuuse me, princess!" And Cerebella's.... uh.... increasing the chance to spawn the poorly drawn cat :')
Squigly's is important cause it lets you do her Raging Demon
Maybe a reference to SF3, where I think taunts also had some kind of unique function for each character?
Don't forget, Big Band's taunt also let's him do his hidden super, TUBA TUBA. Which, yes, is a JoJo reference.
Skullgirls devs just tweeted that they made it so if beowulf gains hype on the new stage while against black dahlia, the crowd will boo instead of cheer.
The sprite for Yang’s cat is taken from one of Felicia’s stages in Darkstalkers. It’s one of her cats.

Fun extra bit of info on the TvC one: Gold Lightan has unique victory dialogue against Alex where he says something to the effect of, “Wow, you can actually lift me? Are you even human?”
Bayonetta's forward throw in Smash4/Ult has a very low chance of having a "Junin haiyan daiyo!" voice line, which is a direct reference to Virtua Fighter(the throw is literally Tetsuzanko)
"Jyuunen hayain daiyo!", or "You're ten years too early [to challenge me]!"

You probably know this, but she'll sometimes say that same quote in the Bayonetta games when doing Tetsuzanko, which again, is quite literally what the move is called in the game. The Bayonetta games are filled with references like that.
I heard that one time during a match, and recognized it as something Akira Yuki says. I actually had to go into the sounds to look for it to confirm it.
I’ve heard her say that several times before, didn’t know it was a reference. Cool stuff.
In MvC2
Winning as Sakura and holding down with both kicks she will dance with her classmates.
For Captain Commando, holding both kicks before the intro, he'll appear as a cowboy instead of in a suit.
In one of the older KOFs, Leona salutes Chang and scoffs at Ralf. SNK doubled down on this, and insisted that Leona salutes Chang because she recognizes his power. Fast-forward to KOF14, and the two exchange salutes as their pre-fight intro.
Two more off the top of my head:
Makoto has an extra taunt off of her Hayate dash punch where she does a karate block
If you start racking up wins with Chun-Li, there's an input you can do to make her blush on her winpose
That was originally a glitch. The Leona/chang thing.
Leona and Chang lowkey respecting each other is both endearing AND funny- you'd never expect them to interact or have any relationship at all, but here they are- they just think the other one's neat.
All the "Useless knowledge" tweets were so good, it's always fun to learn random wacky things.
"useless" knowledge" is the most fun when it comes character animations. That's why i sometimes go into training mode just observe character animations.
I’m not sure if this is that obscure, but in UMvC3, when Hsien-Ko does Anki Hou, there’s a chance she’ll throw meat. When this happens, a voice says, “So tasty!” This is a reference to Monster Hunter, where when you successfully cook meat, that voice clip happens.
I never noticed that, knowing MH got some love in UMvC3 makes me happy.
In the original Melty Blood if Ciel performs 3 weak attacks while Arcueid is ex shielding, they'll perform a cross counter animation in reference to Kagetsu Tohya.
In Type Lumina the stage Magician's Night Ex changes depending on if Aoko is present or not.
In Soulcalibur VI, Raphael's "Death Throes" attack usually destroys the opponent's equipment, but not if he uses it against his daughter Amy
He'll say "no time for resting"
Amy also has a lethal hit only for Raphael that shit happened to me I was heated
In Tekken, one of Steve Fox's arcade mode names is Dean Earwicker, which was his original name before they changed it to Steve.

I know Skullgirls has a million references, but when you brought up Peacock I was certain you were going to talk about H item drop occasionally stopping time and giving the Jojo's Road Roller.
My favorite piece of trivia is that in Blazblue Platinum's 5A is a poke and her sprite during the poke is her doing rock paper scissors. Its usually just a cute and fun detail but if you mirror match with Plat and you do 5A, they actually play rock paper scissors. Scissors has priority over paper, paper has priority over rock, rock has priority over paper, etc etc and they clash if they're the same. Pretty silly and cute af thing lol
If memory serves me right. Doing Cerebella's Taunt Input INCREASES the chance of the cat popping out. IDK if it's stackable, but it's worth a shot.
In KOF if you play as Daimon and do his ground slam move, all your and your opponents characters standing in the background will be knocked down. Except for Kyo and Benimaru who will jump to avoid it instead.
If Q-Bee from Vampire Savior gets electrocuted you can see that she is just a little bee with limbs extensions to look like a normal sized person
If Bulleta gets shocked you can see she carries a mace in her basket and she has a evil looking skull
Kokonoe from Blazblue hides a bunch of lollipops in her sleeves and you can see them if she's electrocuted too.
The fact that Squiggly's fire lights up the ant (and Lab Zero's ludicrous attention to detail) makes me wonder if she misses the ant because that's in line with her character. Peacock and Robo-Fortune would fry ants all day, but maybe Squiggly doesn't want to.
Either this, or Leviathan is a classy gent who can pick and choose what his flames burn... and he is just above killing little bugs. Still, either headcanon's good.
The New Faces Team in KOF 97 (Yashiro, Shermie, Chris,) were supposed to sorta not known as the games villains at "first glance". Nowhere is this better represented than in their theme "Bloody". The Original song starts pretty upbeat and unassuming, later on however the song takes a more threatening tone, giving us a small glance at their more sinster motive.
The Arranged version of Bloody, however takes it a step further, keeping everything I just mentioned but adding in an abrupt out of nowhere Ochestral Piano like section that perfectly gives off some world ending vibes. Before once again abruptly jumping right back to the song's original upbeat chorus. Its a nice thoughtful bit of story telling hidden in a fighting games musical composition.
I've been playing Vampire Savior for 20+ years and didn't know any of those special taunts! Very cool that even after all this time that game still has some hidden stuff to show off.
I have two facts that are decently well known, but I like them both.
Skullgirls has a anti piracy measure that's really weird, but secretly genuis. A pop up will appear and say "what is the square root of a fish? now i'm sad." People have went online to ask what this pop-up meant, only to accidentally out themselves as a pirate!
The second fact is related to Rivals of Aether (sort of). Dan Fornace (the game's creator), made a game before Rivals called Super Smash Land. It's a Smash Bros demake if it was on the og Game Boy. What's interesting about this game is that one of the unlockable charatcers is Vaporeon. Vaporeon has the abilty to teleport between puddles and spit bubbles. This should look famailar to anyone who knows Rivals as it could be seen as a precursor to Orca!
Dan was also hugely into Project M before he made Rivals. He was a Wolf main, which explains why poster boy Zetterburn is so similar to PM Wolf
Not sure if well known and not in a game but, Bryan Cranston aka Walter White from Breaking Bad, did the voice for Fei Long in Street Fighter 2 the animated movie.
In Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, most characters have Stands, beings they can summon to fight for them. If the Stand is damaged, so is the user. In the Capcom fighting game Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Heritage for the Future, one of the playable characters is Hol Horse, whose stand is a gun with bullets. Because the bullets are part of his stand, they can actually be attacked to damage him. If you think you have the reaction time to punch a speeding bullet, you can damage him from across the entire screen this way.
There are a couple of Cyclops’ moves sprinkled throughout some characters.
Ryu has a move called Hado-Shoryuken which is meant to be a reference to his “Gene Splice” attack
C.Viper has a red laser that shoots from her glasses. She doesn’t do anything like that in SF4.
& Phoenix & Viewtiful Joe have his old Air Heavy attack
I Just thought that C.Viper was the substitute for cyclops in mvc3, never thought about the other characters
Wow I never thought of it that way. It’s so cool that all those moves would be used by modders to make Cyclops in MVC3.
The only clever thing I can think of is in Virtua Fighter 5 Final (or Ultimate) Showdown. Characters in VF are divided into different weight classes, and Taka Arashi, the sumo wrestler of the game is the heaviest and has his own weight class. As a result all the characters have a different throw animation specifically when trying to throw Taka and it's pretty funny
Same with throwing Rook in Fantasy Strike

if i recall from randomly playing Sean in 3S, pulling down + towards on the joystick for a bit (towards the opponent) will guarantee the basketball to hit during round opening intro, you have to let go right after he releases the ball, otherwise the trajectory of the basketball will go to far.. essentially you can modify the flight path of the basketball with the stick input during the shot
In U/MvC3 and Infinite if you have Hulk out and call Chris for a swap or assist he calls him "Rock Puncher" in reference to the end of RE5. Dudleys rose throw taunt in SF4 and SFxT has a hitbox with a decent amount of hitstun on contact, as does Dan's air taunt
Fun fact, frying multiple ants with Peacock’s c.MK adds more damage to the laser!
With the UMvC3 wrong sounds thing, it’s also like that on the ps4 version not just steam.
There’s other broken sounds too like all of Phoenix Wright’s heavy normals make glass breaking sounds (or glass bottles clinking together)
For Skullgirls I've actually seen the cat a few times. Bella players mash lock n load SO MUCH that you'll definitely see it eventually
In Street Fighter Alpha 2, on Ken's stage, it's a costume party for Eliza's birthday. The Strider character is holding a teddy bear. That's because the person in charge of the Super Grafx version of Strider was ill. This was meant as a "get well".
Fun fact about the Sean fun fact!
If you press and hold start before the game loads in and he throws the basketball, you can actually control the basketball as it flies with the joystick! This also removes the randomness aspect of gaining the meter before the match actually starts because, theoretically, you can _always_ do this!
Actually, you can always control the ball to a certain extent and with a random factor always present. (Ball trajectory is always random) But, if you hold Start, the ball WILL always fall in front of the opponent, making it way easier to hit the head and get that tiny meter

For Sean's basketball toss, you can actually control the ball whether it goes over or falls short by holding the directional pad. So it is on the player to be able to hit the head not just random
In 3s, Elena can literally move by timing her Crouching animation. Its so cool lol.
Not a fighting game moment, more of a lore drop, but the art of Sagat with who we thought was a bloody Dan in the 90s is actually the moment Sagat kills Go Hibiki, Dan's dad
This isn't an Easter egg but it is a weird thing about a game. In SF4 if you use LK Ruffian as Cody against Seth and El Fuerte, then walk forward a few frames and then FADC, you will pass through them on the ground and cross them up. Easier to do on Seth.
In BlazBlue Central fiction, Hibiki's 236A does kind of a short hop stance with 4 follow-ups depending on the button pressed. When you use A, he normally throws a spread of knives downward UNLESS you are playing against Kagura (his boss in the lore) at which point he throws down documents
Surprised you left this out, but, in Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Frank West's super's also change when used on giant characters. His lvl 1 throw super has a slightly different animation on the wind-up but otherwise is about the same. His Lvl 3, however, has an entirely different animation.
We need a part 2 or even a series for this!
Soul calibur 4 has bonus designed characters that are guest designed, with clone movesets from other characters. This results in some really weird interactions with two in particular, where the Golem girl isn’t as big as her clone (Asteroth) resulting in her having “telepathy axe” moments, and the girl with two katanas being able to shoot a non-existent Cervantes Pistol-sword
I've always wondered exactly what Yipes meant when he described Magneto as "Pringles". I'm pretty sure he means that once Magneto "pops" (launches you), he doesn't stop (comboing you)
The phrase began with the idea of being "wide open" or lacking defense. So getting past someone's defense will "Open them up". Enter the Yipes phrase "He will open you up, like a can of Pringles." So they will get past your blocking very quickly and with much enthusiasm. So in the video he's actually describing the guy playing Storm as Pringles. Obviously the meme visuals of a curly mustache looked far better on pictures of magneto.

The dragon ball z budokai and tenkaichi games have a lot of little nods to the series and easter eggs. Things like yamcha usually gets auto killed by a saibaman explosion. Certain characters will change their names for world tournaments to match anime story arc. If you wait long enough characters will stare at the screen and much more.
In Smash Ultimate if Snake lets a grenade explode next to him he will cover his ears

I didn't know hammer-headbutting giant robots was a thing Alex could do, and I' actually OWN the game! Now that I do know I feel like I have a newfound appreciation for him that none of his SF-appearances gave him.
Reasons for Hugo's ass-adventures: his designer was just SUPER into butts. Her colleagues even asked her "but why tho" and she was just so brazen about her drawing her interests that they just... shrugged and let it slide. I guess they figured that they could do what they wanted with the ladies in the game so like, what's the harm in letting her have her fun?
Also I'm gonna go out on a limb and headcanon that Leviathan's flames don't hurt the ants because he's a classy dude who doesn't want to pointlessly pick on little creatures.
Uhhh here's one that might be well known but still:
- Incineroar in Smash Ultimate has animations upon landing or missing his smash attacks. Landing them makes him celebrate, missing them makes him frustrated. If you don't cancel those animations, his hitbox accurately follows them and the celebratory ones (I'm not sure about the frustrated ones) can have super armor, making him basically bait anyone trying to punish his end lag.
Never really saw much of skullgirls when it was the "it" thing and i know you love it, would be dope to see more matches on it and you going into characters and such, assuming theres a decent community still left on it that play and it wouldnt be a hassle to do.
Holding starting in the beginning animation allows you to move the ball with Sean 4:20

In sf4 the outside of the lifebar flash es white in time with the button powers used frame data and can be used as a visual aid for combos.
In Marvel vs Capcom, Morrigan has a rare BDSM outro. I don't know if it has special conditions or is just a low percentage, but occasionally Morrigan will change into a black leather corset and Lilith comes down with her wrists in chains after you win a match.
Little lasers kill that ant, but through the fire and the flames, it carries on.

More of a random fact than an Easter egg, but...
In Brawlhalla, every character has a lore page. At the top of each of these is a title for said legend (for example, Jaeyun's is "The Sell sword"). Of the over 50 legends in the game, though, only two have a title without the word "The". These legends are Hattori ("Demon Bride") and Nix (" Reaper for Hire").

In Tekken 7: When Miguel hits Alisa or Jack 7 with his rage art, you see static on the screen at each hit because they’re both robots.

I believe one of Black Dahlia's from Skullgirls jumping moves has a small chance of having her use an Energy Sword from Halo i stead of a knife, even going so far as having her say "It's Sunday!" to boot.

You can select the win poses in SFA2 and SFA3 by holding down 1p/2p start and pressing another button.

Also did you know if you hold up or down during the versus with Mokujin in any Tekken game where he is playable, he will make wooden knock sounds when he is hit? This also goes for Tetsujin from TTT and also Combot from T4.
I always did notice the sound effect for Frank’s plunger was different on the Steam port, but I never noticed that it was the sound file for the zombies. That’s really neat.

One of my favorite tidbits is in Super Gen Fighter / Pocket Fighter. If you play with Akuma and do the Raging Demon in the "quick" way (HCB + Special button) he'll so in a boring, quick way as well.
But if you do it as Punch, Punch, Forward, Kick, Special (quite hard to pull off without starting a combo at the opponent) ... he'll do it in a very comical way, hitting the opponent in a different way each hit.

Big band's MP has accurate fingering for trumpet when he plays it and when you play it on the controller
This is my random easter egg knowledge. In Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 Sin has to eat food in order to allow himself to cancel special moves into other special moves, he has a bar separate from the standard meter bar for his hunger levels, which sounds pretty normal right? However if you steal one of fausts food items from him normally it would just build you a little meter, heal you, etc. BUT if you are SPECIFICALLY SIN, eating a food item from faust will give you not just the normal benefits from his food items but also the TINIEST of smidge of hunger back to Sin.

If you use Q's Total Destruction SA and use the SA command grab on Sean, there is a point where Sean's head gets swapped out with Ryu's head right before the explosion.

For the plunger sound effect in MvC3, it's obvious that the plunger got bitten by a zombie hence the grunts.
Adding on to kens moment 37 stuff his
Shippu Jinraikyaku in smash ultimate also refers moment 37 by the starting pose and lightning bolt effect.
The cat is a joke doodle of Mike Zaimont's (one of the former devs) cat. It's also available as a secret boss in one of the backer builds of Indivisible.
Frank West also has a special animation for Giants in TvC for his command grab super.
Reading Mike Z being referred to simply as "one of the former devs" of Skullgirls is pretty funny.
