    Hey everyone! After reading an article recently on CNN, Jon asked me to cover the topic of tattoos making a person stronger by giving them a stronger and healthier immune system. In today's video, I cover the topic of how common things in tattooing can make us feel weakened, for example, tattoo removal and 'tattoo flu' but how a current study is actually making connections that the more often you are getting tattooed, the stronger a person is building their immunity.

    So when I was getting blood work done, I had a doctor tell me that having tattoos and piercings lowered your immunity at all times. She also went on a huge rant though about heaven and hell and Buddha when I said the blood work was for gender affirming surgery. Also, she said I was "super healthy and everything looked good" until I mentioned it was for those reasons. Sooooooo I feel like she was just saying bullshit to make it look like I wasn't healthy enough for surgery. That's all I've got though in terms of tattoos and immunity. My tattoos have healed better and quicker over the years, but I also used to have an eating disorder and I'm a lot healthier now so I assumed it was for those reasons. *Big shrug*

    • @masens.9010

      sounds like run of the mill transphobia, from my point of view! I’ve encountered doctors like that too. I’m on T and have also gotten top surgery. It’s ironic how some of the most so-called “spiritual” and “open-minded” people are transphobic. A lot of them believe that the soul is what “really” matters, unless you bring up trans people. Then suddenly your physical body is the end-all-be-all of everything. I just don’t understand how someone could believe in an unseen, all-knowing higher power and things like multiple dimensions, but they can’t accept that trans people exist (& always have)

      I felt like I never got sick when I was an IV drug user, now I feel like I get every cold that comes around. Probably because I was constantly putting gross stuff into my bloodstream. Also now I'm actually taking proper care of myself so I probably notice colds and stuff more..

    I'd have to question whether simply aging was the reason for your friends getting better immune systems. We need a bigger sample size! Also, comparing getting tattooed to going to the dentist is exactly how I've always described it.

    • @d.tasker4486
      @d.tasker4486 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think that could be the case because these are people in their 20's and 30's... You have a weaker immune system as a little kid but by the time you're a teenager you should have an adult immune system basically. Like someone who's 25 isn't going to have a radically different immune system from 5 years ago without something spurring it on. That's my understanding anyway.

    • @sophienobes3227
      @sophienobes3227 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally your immune system gets weaker with age, hence why elderly people are more prone to illness, and are at greater risk of death following flu and other disease that are rarely deadly in younger adults

    • @d.tasker4486
      @d.tasker4486 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sophienobes3227 yeah but isn't that when you're like, older older? like, as i said, Qcknd's friends are in their 20's and 30's, your immune system isn't already weakening by then, is it? I assumed it didn't start to fail until you were in your 50's or so, unless something significant happens to you (contracting an autoimmune disease or getting cancer for example).

    • @sophienobes3227
      @sophienobes3227 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      D. Tasker no, you’re right. I was more trying to say that, as with other aspects of physical health, it would peak after childhood before dropping off again into old age. I wouldn’t expect the 5/10 year difference Q asked her friend about to cover a period of immune system weakening. I think we were making the same point in opposite ways 😊

    I have been relatively heavily tattooed for 5ish years. I don't feel like it changed the frequency with which I got sick from when I was in high school to when I had kids. Having kids I get sick more often because they are germ mongers. But, I get sick much less often than my less tattooed husband. So take that for whatever it is.

    "Why do I have to drink so much coffee in order to be happy" is such a mood.
    I definitely prefer a new tattoo over the flu shot, so I appreciate this argument.
    I work in a large office, where there is pretty much at least one sick person at any given time. Basically a petri dish of germs. I am the only person on my team who is heavily tattooed/tattooed at all, and I have to cash out my sick time at the end of the year 'cause I never use it.

    I've always wondered about this! I used to be sick 5-6 times a year.....usually a cold or strep throat. I was planning on getting my tonsils out it was so bad. I was always on antibiotics.
    At this point I had 1 med and 2 small tattoos.
    Then I got a large tattoo.....and a half back piece within 2 years. I was only sick 2x a year or so.
    Now I have a sleeve + the others and work as a professor (always around many students at a public college) and I have not had a cold in years......while my poor husband gets sick 4x a year still (he has 2 med tattoos). I don't catch his colds, or it is rare if I do.
    I often travel (to conferences and for vacation) and don't come down with anything (besides judegmental tattoo side eye) even after plane rides.
    I try to eat well.....but I eat meat and drink energy drinks almost daily....I know. Trash.
    But I think there may be some interesting research that could be done!
    Great thoyght inspiring video 💚💚💚

    All of this makes soooo much sense, wow. I just thought my tattoos healing faster now was due to different artists or other circumstances. Same thing about what you said about aftercare: I just thought I became more careless but I honestly don't have to do anything to them anymore so I don't. I recently got a giant backpiece done two days before hopping on a 18 hour flight. Even that same day I could just sit and lean on chairs just fine, while I remember my shoulder (first big tattoo) I was aching for daaaays. Crazy.

    All the (really cool!) science in this video makes me want a TTT about tattooed scientists. I'm a palaeontologist (I study dinosaurs, dead things and fossils) and I know so many palaeontologists with tattoos, including myself, (from a single ammonite to a fully tattooed guy with raptor claws for feet) and I reckon so many other scientists must have tattoos of their field of study! The fun thing with palaeontology is that the field is moving so quickly that if you get a tattoo of something ever so speculative that in a couple of years it could be an outdated reconstruction (especially now we are uncovering the colours of dinosaurs and other extinct organisms).

Love your look today, fresh for fall! and that ad for the game was hilarious and perfect. As far as the immunity I can see it both ways - on one hand the wounds should cause you to have lower immunity but on the other hand healing should make you stronger.....mmmm science is strange to me and our bodies are miracles

My most recent 5, I moisturized like once a day for a week, no itch like you said, and they healed much much faster that my earlier pieces. I also never get sick! I’m also a v strict vegan

  • @maril7026
    @maril7026 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I definitely think my newer tattoos have healed significantly faster than when I first started getting tattooed. Sometimes I’m even surprised when it’s mostly healed after about 4 days. It’s so crazy to me. There is one particular issue I’ve had with a tattoo. The healing process was rough despite it being exactly how I’ve healed all my others. And this was a different artist that I had never been to before. I’m unsure of what happened, but for details understand that this tattoo is entirely raised, is so dark and black that people ask if it’s fresh all the time, and there are some spots where the ink is missing. It makes me wonder if it had something to do with the artist’s heavier hand or if my immunity was trash at the time of being tattooed. Regardless it’s the only tattoo like that and since then I’ve had zero issues healing any and they mostly heal within a few days.

  • @mandamandamandayeah

    I think it’s interesting that you pointed out that your new tattoos don’t really itch during healing anymore. I noticed after my last big piece I haven’t experienced itching during healing with any subsequent tattoos. I’m super thrilled about that because it used to keep me up at night and it was pure torture. In my opinion the itchy phase is the worst part of getting a tattoo aside from the actual pain of it.

But it makes so much sense that it’s because of all the tattoos I have. My most recent tattoo healed in 5 days, and my friend who just got his third tattoo healed in 2 weeks!! Having been at dentist yesterday- and tat/piercing shop day prior- I find my shoulders going up to my ears with tension But then again, after sitting for after an hour, I can relax and “zone” out- kind of go into my own head/world and just deal with the pain. I can even fall asleep. Both at dentist or tats. Oddly tho I haven’t had a tat since may- the itch isn’t there as much... idk why. I still have space...

    I love the idea that tattoos are making my immunity stronger but I also wonder about all the other variables, like diet, exercise etc. I just thought my immune system is getting better due to what I’m putting in my body, but like ok tattoos if you gone help me, OK IM HERE FOR IT.

    So this is super interesting and as research progressive I'll be really interested to see if they begin to analyze how highly tattooed/immunological responses affects individuals with chronic autoimmune diseases. I'm a "barely tattooed" person/collector. I only have two small ones and intend to collect more as the years progress but I also have Crohn's Disease (Inflammatory Bowel Disease, autoimmune disease) due to hereditary factors.

    For any Biology major this would be excellent study to do! There aren’t nearly enough studies on tattoos. I would love to do this research but I’m a sociology major, so wrong science 😅

    I'm married to a tattoo artist, and actually had to STOP getting tattooed as it has weakened my immunity. Even after the tattoo has healed your body never stops fighting it, as it's something that should not be there. The more you get, the more your body is constantly fighting them and weakening you. It's not something to happens to everyone, but those with already weak immune systems should be careful. I got 5 tattoos within 2 years, and have gotten sicker in these 2 years than I can ever remember. I never have skin reactions and everything is done very hygienically, its just how your body reacts since it never truly heals from the inside. Something to think about. I love tattoos, but had to say goodbye.

    Your use of sponsored product placement is so hipster cute, and like you created the most direct "marketing" ad at the end of your video that most people would try to sneak into their video in some nondescript way but I love how you awkwardly and purposefully engage the viewer with a product advertisement in a way that almost seems ironic but also genuine. Anyway I love your video, if you read this could you please consider making a vegan extreme couponing video? Love you

    Hmm.
    I do get sick less than before getting tattooed, but I had also quit smoking only a year prior and that probably had a bigger role to play in things.

    The human body is like insanely clever. Once you've had a bug your body stores the immunological response to it. So if you get it again your body already knows what to do. It's part of the reason we have tonsils. :)

    I think someone from the University of Alabama published a paper on this topic. A few friends of mine have sent it to me because I graduated from there and have a good amount of tattoos lol. Very interesting but I have yet to read the actual paper haha
