  • Hey everyone, today I want to talk about when it's okay to not get a tattoo if you're dealing with doubt, influence or peer pressure!
    Become A Channel Member! / @qcknd
    Hey everyone. I get messaged sometimes from people who have cold feet, or are nervous, and that's all pretty normal, but then I get messaged from people who really sound unsure and borderline like they don't even want a tattoo. I thought i would talk about that today so we could get a discussion going about the times when doubt should be a red flag in your tattoo decision process.

    You know my feelings on this subject: If you’re already thinking about the laser before you’ve even figured out the tattoo you wanna get, don’t get the fricking tattoo.

      I admittedly have made the joke about «I can always get it lasered». It is in the same veign as «I can always chop off my arm» in my opinion. Obviously I plan to have every tattoo I’ve ever gotten forever and there is a reason I waitet til I was in my 20s and had something I felt I could stick with forever. That being said there a certain comfort in knowing that if sombody fs up and that tattoo comes out horribly that there are options. Things like cover ups or laser. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still do your reserch and go to a reputable artist and so on, obviously.

    honestly, i don't even think that the "just get it lazered option" is a good option because getting it lazered is probably going to be more time intensive, more expensive and more painful than just getting the tattoo in the first place

    • @HGRK
      @HGRK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly! I think some people assume getting laser is like a one and done thing, when it's actually Many sessions over a large period of time. And after all that, the tattoo may only be lightened, not gone.

  • @lG-gh3py
    @lG-gh3py 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    I feel like there's a difference between using the possibility of getting laser removal to calm your anxieties when you really want a tattoo, and planning your tattoos around the possibility of removing them (like getting certain styles and colors that are easier to remove). Like when you get a tattoo there should be an expectation that it's permanent, at the time at least you should want it forever. I don't know if I verbalized this quite right but I hope y'all know what I mean.

    “Get more” hits me. I have some tattoos on my arm that I really like but when they are just alone I think they look awkward. My plan is to get a sleeve and they won’t look so awkward but until I have money I just have to deal with them floating around in the void of my arm. So sometimes I regret them... but I know that I have a plan to make them part of something bigger. Balancing act for me

    • @peacechickification
      @peacechickification 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sarah Sparks hahaha I’m in the same boat! I have a few tattoos that I love dearly and are incredibly sentimental for me- but I fuckin hate how they look alone and how strangers see them on me, especially because they hold special places in my heart. I’ve grown a lot as a human having a half finished arm that doesn’t look half finished to anyone looking, but boy am I excited to get the part that I’m excited for people to look at so that I don’t have to feel so incredibly vulnerable with my piece that I love carrying for myself on main display for everyone to see.

      I had this one tattoo on my forearm that I ended up hating for a while because it was just floating there, I couldn't even look at it! But as soon as I got the much bigger piece that it's now part of I grew to love it again

      I'm in a different space, I got my first tattoo on my arm and it's sentimental. I added some more there because i felt it looked lonely. But now its just part of a "collage" and doesnt stand by its own amymore, which i think nobody ever talks about lol

    Well said, as someone covered head to toe I get asked daily by others if they should get tattooed and my best answer is always "I don't know" I love mine and they certainly make me feel more comfortable in my own skin but they do not define me by any means. Like you said putting an image on yourself isn't going to change how perfect you already are. What a beautiful sentiment.

    Yes! I think everyone at some point has to figure out what they find aesthetically attractive vs what they want for themsleves. I choose to have mostly neo/trad tattoos but i appreciate people with full black and grey bodies and when i see people with the bridge of their nose peirced?!?! I love that shit. Huge stretched lobes? Yes. I really like seeing it but i know it's not for me. You can like tattoos and never get one. Don't let fomo and instagram convince you otherwise lol

    I’ve wanted tattoos for as long as I can remember until I had met my ex. He was completely covered but convinced me he doesn’t like girls with tattoos so I shouldn’t get them and that I was going to ruin my body. The tattoos I want aren’t even bad I love neo/traditional and spiritual/botanical tattoos, just very pretty art. I can’t believe I was under this guys control but I now have a couple and love them! I think a lot of people admire tattoos but don’t have any because they are afraid of judgement or commitment or that it’s not going to be exactly what they want.

    I agree ! It's the same for piercings. For example I always really liked cheek piercings but I know the risks of scars and rejection and while I know I can get the holes fixed up I don't think I want these piercings enough to deal with that .

    I rly like that u brought up the whole fomo one can get when tattoo conventions or flash events are happening. There was a tattoo festival that happened in my town recently and a lot of the ppl that Im friends with on social media were posting on their stories about it and some even posting photos of the tattoos they got, which made me suuuper jealous coz I love tattoos (but am a tattoo virgin), to the point where I contemplated buying a ticket last minute so I can go. But after some rationalising I have concluded that I'd rather not make a rashed decision about something so permanent. But it also made me wonder how many other young ppl experience a similar feeling and actually get a tattoo, which they may later on regret.

      I actually did that before I got my first tattoo. I put a watercolor ink box tattoo on my upper tight and I loved it soo much, that I now have two real water color tattoos on my upper tights.
      I'm also sure that I don't like any huge visible tattoos (my tattoos are easy to cover up, I can always choose to show them or not)
      I love visible tattoos on other people tho. I love fully covered bodies. But it's not for me, it wouldn't fit me I think

    I always enjoy your humble honesty in your videos. As a tattoo artist it’s good to get the perspective of the client and the culture that now surrounds tattoos. I feel like because it has become kind of a “fashion” thing for some people it can be dangerous to follow the current trend because it’s not like you can just hide it in the back of your closet when the trend shifts. I do “flash” sales at my shop but I try and leave it open for people to bring their own design as long as it fits the criteria. In this way it’s really for those people who were already thinking about getting tattooed and making it easier to afford. Keep doing what you do.

    Completely agree with everything you've said here, I love these discussions - I think it is ok to be impulsive sometimes with tattoos, especially flash. Two of my five tattoos were flash I saw available on instagram and immediately fell in love with, and I had them on my body within a couple days. I think there is definitely a difference between those experiences of mine and what I feel you're talking about in this video - I never felt doubt and it never crossed my mind that "I'll just get it lasered if I don't end up wanting it". For me personally, that occasional impulsivity is an exciting part of getting tattoos but its so important to know yourself and probably check that you aren't already thinking about removal before you even get the tattoo

    • @meeks6798

    My two flash pieces are probably my favorite tattoos. I think there’s something really special about seeing a flash sheet and just connecting with a piece that you didn’t even know you wanted until you saw it. I never really think about laser removal, but I also don’t really pay attention to my tattoos all the time, in my opinion it’s kind of like a birth mark- they’re there and you notice them sometimes but other times it’s just your skin. So that’s kind of my way of dealing with anxiety (but for me all of my tattoos are able to be covered so it might be different for people with more visible tattoos to ignore them)

    I’ve pretty much resigned myself to the fact that tattoos aren’t right for me. I have always loved and admired them and often daydream about different styles and ideas I could get, but I know that I would regret it immediately if I ever went ahead with it. I have a real hard time with anything on my skin, even pen and I struggle a lot with the concepts of permanence and commitment. Having tattoos would make me feel a stranger in my own body and I wouldn’t be able to cope with that.
    A somewhat related thing is gender affirming top surgery. I really would like a flat chest and I really do want top surgery but I am so scared that it would make my body feel foreign to me having any permanent alteration done to it, even if that alteration is ultimately making me more comfortable in other ways. Idk. My brain is weird

    • @slitheen3
      @slitheen3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel a similar way. I know a lot of people who get tattoos (or do their own) on a whim and it makes it seem so normal. I think tattoos are so cool and love admiring them and have thought about getting some, but the idea of altering my body in any permanent way stresses me out so bad. I've recently dipped my toes into piercings but even that stresses me out and sometimes I get upset by the tiny little holes on my ears (partly because they werent done well and I want to take them out and get done again but the scar is always going to be there).
      I relate with the gender thing too. Most of my life I've wished I was more androgynous and had more body hair, so I have been considering low dose hrt, partly as a 'nonbinary transition' and partly more as body modification, but that scares me too because you cant undo that, and even if I think itll make me happier.... what if it doesnt?
      Recently I actually thought about what it would be like to have a beautiful tattoo permanently inked into my skin and it made me reeaallly anxious so I dont think it's for me. At least not for a long while. It's nice to hear "you dont need tattoos to be alternative" because that kind of is the expectation

  • @alekbeaver4088
    @alekbeaver4088 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I really love this though, I’ve had an idea kicking around, and it just hasn’t felt like the right time. You can enjoy the aesthetic but not be in the club. I love weird spooky horror shit, but I don’t see myself as a goth. You can be whoever the hell you want to be, and like whatever you want to like. More specifically, you can appreciate tattoos, but you don’t have to have them. I can’t say I know anyone that’s like this, but if that’s you, you’re valid, and wonderful! Life can be shitty, don’t let someone take away your sunshine

    This video is so spot on for thoughts I’ve been having! I’ve been feeling the “itch” to get a tattoo for a few years. I know my placement, I have ideas for elements, but I just can’t seem to find an image that is *exactly* what I want nor can I seem to reach out to a tattoo artist to ask them to design something because the doubts about will I love it in 5, 10, 15 years just don’t seem to go away. I’ll just keep subscribing to tattoo content and faithfully watching every season of ink master until I can decide if I can commit. 🤣

    I've been wanting to be a heavily tattoed person since I was about 15/16. I'm 26 now and I've only got one little linework tattoo on my ankle. It's not because I didn't want to be tattoed, but my anxiety makes me not trust my choices and I'm always pessimistic about regretting something this permanent, regardless of what it is. So the possibility of tattoo removal would be something to tell my anxiety that it has to shut up and let me enjoy my life lol. Like it's obviously not the ideal outcome and I would hate to have to do it, but there being a way out calms me down.

    When i had just turned 18 I wanted to get a tattoo on my arm, I paid my deposit and told the artist what i wanted however the drawing she came back with wasn’t what i wanted, and when i said this she was insistent what i wanted wouldn’t work and what she had drawn up was the only option. My boyfriend at the time worked with her and when I said I wasn’t into the design and it wasn’t what I had imagined it looking like, he told me I’d have wasted her time and would embarrass him if i didnt get it done after she had drawn it up, even though I’d already paid about £150 deposit so she would have made money either way. On the day I tried to COMPROMISE by saying i would have this tattoo that i didn’t like/ want on my leg instead of my arm as i thought it would be a less noticeable place. The Tattooist said it would look weird on my leg because of the way it had been drawn to fit my arm and my boyfriend at the time convinced me to get it on my arm. I remember just thinking I could get it lasered off and it still pisses me off nearly ten years later that i basically got bullied into getting something I didn’t want and didnt have the guts to stick up for myself properly and now have this weird ass tattoo I’ve never liked on my arm

    You really hit the nail on the head with the sale comment 😂😅 Three of my tattoos were flash, it’s like you see it and your like oh shit it’s on sale! *throws it in the cart* Also people paying for your tattoos!! My brother paid for my two matching tattoos I have with him, “oh your paying? Hell yeah let’s go!” Lol! Luckily I LOVE all my flash and matching tattoos. The one tattoo I’m not 100% in love with is one that I saw the design and wasn’t 100% in to it but I felt too weird to say anything and figured the colors would make it look better 😅🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😂 lessons learned!

    I’ve known I wanted to be a tattooed person since I was 13 years old. I don’t think my mom thought I was seriously going to do it but I am now 22 and I have 23 tattoos. I didn’t get my first until I was 18 and I didn’t start actively start getting tattooed until I was 19. I’m so happy I waited but it was never ever anything I questioned. I always knew this is what I wanted. You would know if you actually want a tattoo. Don’t ever do it if you question it. You need to be okay with the idea of being 60/70 years old and with having it on your body. Yes it’s possible to get rid of it but never go into it thinking that way.
    Also I have two tattoos I am not the biggest fan of myself but I’m also to the point that like you said. You don’t like a tattoo? Go get more. The more you have the less you notice the ones you don’t like. lol

      Melanie Livorsi I have a couple small tattoos that arent from a shop, that I sometimes have self reflections of, did i really do this? But at the TIME of the event, I needed too. i needed to be reminded of it everyday. So I think of it as im becoming the person I needed when I was younger. im becoming a story of myself and my journey, and its not perfect but neither am I!

    I love you videos 😍 I always knew I would be a tattooed person from the age of 12 its was a dream for me and even being sure I wanted tattoos I still get doubt and worry, tattoos are such a commitment its understandable why people get doubt, and completely normal. Whenever I book a tattoo, I take removal out of the question as if it doesnt exsist, could I live with it and almost hitting my 30th tat I havent regreted any so far.

    I'm still young, about to be 21 without any tattoos as of yet. I have dreamed and dreamed of getting tattooed for years! but I haven't followed through. I want to be smart about it. part of it is also anxiety, and even guilt of paying for the tattoo (i feel guilt about buying anything though) sometimes I wonder, will I ever go through with it? I definitely want to, if i've longed for it for years it must be true. I don't ever think about removal either. I have the mindset to be accepting of any regrets or possible mistakes. I think what holds me back the most is the act of getting the tattoo, the anxiety. not necessarily the permenacy, just the whole experience lol does anyone else go through this? If there's a way you could include this sort of topic in a TTT that would be interesting to see.

      Hey i went through something similar. I have loved tattoos for years and wanted one since i was 18. I had the idea i wanted and where and researched everything but i was terrified about it because i was scared it would hurt. Then when i was 22 or 23 i went to the tattoo shop with my boyfriend at the time because he was getting one. It was after spending some time at the tattoo shop (which was one id researched and was the best in my area) i got a tattoo and i love it. It also didnt hurt as much as i thought it would.

      I completely understand in terms of guilt over purchases. ANY large purchase makes me stress!
      The way I deal with it, in terms of tattoos, is to save a little bit every week until I can pay for one (I set aside $15-$20 each week). Then it feels like I've earned it when I have the $800 or so saved up for a tattoo session.

      This is really relatable. I followed this one artist and love her work a lot. I had an idea in my mind for a long time, had written my e-mail to this artist but too scared to send it, eventhough I dreamed about it for a while. Eventually I promised that I was going to send the email, but didn't. My bf clicked on send and I freaked out and got a bit upset. A while after that I became excited about it. Loved the sketch the artist made. I was nervous on the day of the appointment, but when I walked in I got calm again. I love my tattoo a lot. But now I am having the exact same issue again with my idea for my next tattoo... For me it's probably because of the permanency / a big change. I like my tattoo idea(s), I thought it through a long time, and if I think about it I really don't think I will regret it. Maybe it's also a control thing, I have a concept in mind but haven't seen the sketch, so until then I will not 100 procent know what it will look like, eventhough this artist will make a awesome sketch for sure. But yeah it sucks, and I don't know what to do... Probably just send the email (and freak out a little :$)
      I have the same with guilt about buying almost anything, but strangely I felt no guilt about paying for the tattoo eventhough it wasn't cheap, I think because you pay for something pretty that will not go away.
      So yeah..

      I got my first tattoo from a shop in october. It was something for my best friend, whos been with me since I was a baby. I was very uncomfy at first, not because of the shop or design or anything. I was in love with all of it. I just had this generalized anxiety. So we decided to tour the shop, talk to ALL of the artists there, see the vibe, and my artist even showed me the different needles and ways to set the gun up and everything to ease my anxiety. I love my tattoo, and I love the shop I went too. I just feel like that was such a huge thing for me. It was so amazing at how understanding they were, and how patient they were. My artist and the whole staff was very kind and non pressuring at all. If you have any ideas or thoughts, you can always check around and visit a shop and if an artist cares, they'll make time to answer even the SMALLEST questions. This is permanent, but it doesn't have to be as spooky as I thought it was. I don't know if it helped but id like to hear any thoughts or opinions that maybe anyone else has?

    I'm in the process of getting a tattoo lasered off (ex's name, I was dumb, young, and infatuated) and it's very painful and expensive. Laser removal is amazing and a great option if you need one removed, but you're right, it's not the right mindset to go in thinking "I can just laser this off if I regret it". And there's definitely no guarantee of actual results when removing. All ink responds differently, so some are going to be more resistant to laser. I understand where you're coming from and I'm glad you did this video. It was very entertaining and informative. :) Best of luck on your next video!

    I am 46 and planning my first tattoos with an amazing artist and they are quite large- this is a great video and much appreciated!
    I wanted to add to your perspective about the person who hasn’t gotten tats until over age 40! One issue is that prior to this age affording the quality of work I’d want to wear for the rest of my life was just never a priority when my kids were young and my husband’s career was not going well, etc.. as well , I honestly didn’t KNOW MYSELF before age 40 (so sadly) well enough to know what sort of images I would want to be propagating for the rest of my life! I’m beyond enthusiastic to become a person with tattoos and after planning what I want for the past 2+ years I can’t imagine any scenario where I’d want them gone after!! I am so happy to have found your channel!!! Have a beautiful day and may God bless you❤️❤️❤️

    I love the suggestion to get more. I don't really care for my first tattoo anymore, but don't want to cover it up or remove it because it still meant something really special. If I get more then it's no longer the focus and I probably won't worry about it so much.
    Edit to add: I already want more anyway. It's also tucked away on my hip, not on my chest or even my arm for everyone to see all the time.

    I am so glad I saw your channel before I got tattooed since it was very useful looking at healing (that and the fact I got a 2nd degree burn on the same arm a week later and it was handy using the same healing tips...)

    1. Descendents love! 2. I feel the same about the absorbing other peoples feelings thing. Empaths unite! 3. This does exist. I have a tattoo on my shoulder-blade that is a tribute to a friend of mine who passed. I now think that I could have taken more time with the placement and intricacy (still very well executed). It is super important to me, but I could have developed it, and what would later surround it, more. I was pressured by a friend who is excited on tattoos who was saying I should just go get it. I repeat, I love it, but I let influence make me get it quicker and possibly a more simple than I could have it I sat on the idea a little longer. 4. I will never judge anyone who gets a piece removed. There are so many situations where it is needed. However, I personally like to think of tattoos as lifelong partners before getting them. If you get to an age where you're thinking that you don't like the design anymore, you can look at it as a timecapsule of who you were when you got it! They are a big decision and should be treated as such. Commitment is a great thing to learn! Again, I would never judge anyone for doing it though. 5. You articulated all of this so well! thank you for continuing the conversation.

    Currently in the middle of getting a tattoo done (finishing it up today) and i’m honestly not sure about it. when she showed me the design originally, i was like yes i love it and then as i was getting it done, there is just two flowers that i’m just not that into. it’s kind of too late at this point, but i’m hoping that when it’s more healed and completely finished, i’ll like those flowers more! If not they are light in colour and i might just have to get the tattoo reworked, which is pretty frustrating! point being, tell the artist what you want/want to change because it will be there forever!

    I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be tattooed out of fear but I always admired it. I thought it was such a cool form of expression. I’m a very indecisive person (hey libra) and I often make a choice of “no” by simply not making a choice at all. So that’s how it was for me and tattoos for a long time. I’m an anxious person and I feared regret. It wasn’t until I was exposed to your channel that I felt calm and sure of what I wanted. I watched you for a year and then last year I got my first tattoo. It was one of the best things I’ve done! I feel excited to look at it every day and it feels more natural than my plain skin. In January, one year later, I will get my second. So I take it slow and really savor the experience of tattoos being a special treat to look forward to.

One of .y good friends is talking about getting matching tattoos with another friend, and she always sounds unsure- not sure about the design, artist, etc. And I've always told her that if she wants it, I will 100% back her up and encourage her to do it. However since shes so unsure I always tell her to wait or just not. Theres nothing wrong with not being tattooed.

    I thought about laser before I got my tattoo, but I think that's more the type of person I am than not wanting my tattoo, which is probably why I didn't get tattooed until I was 29. I plan all the time for all things. I don't like playing important things by ear at all. This isn't to say I'm not open to things changing- my tattoo went from being a smaller shoulder tattoo to an entire upper back piece AT the appointment- but I like to know all my outcomes, I need to know how much laser will cost if it goes to shit. But I went, got the tattoo, and I love it. I have had momentary panics of "omg I've done something huge and masculine and pretty permanent to myself" but I think that comes more from "close your legs, don't talk like a sailor, smile more" culture I was raised in, because I honestly think my tattoo fits me.
    ETA: And by masculine, I mean my tattoo is masculine, not that tattoos are inherently masculine by themselves.

    I've been saving for my first big piece, but I'm gonna take a swing around the old therapy block before I commit, just to make sure we're all on the same page (me, myself, and my mental health). I'm probably still going to go for it, but I just want my decisions to sit right with ME first. And that person isn't always trustworthy.

    I am so glad I waited to get my first tattoo! I thought about it for YEARS before taking the leap and even then my first was through one of those little flash events! A small lavender and poppy fine line. It made me realize just how much I love them and did a custom piece the second time around. I don't even think about laser as an option because for some reason that's scarier to me than getting a tattoo 😹 this video was so spot on!!

    i just had to come to terms with the fact that i have to laser off a tattoo i got three years ago, today, and it honestly sucks! i had a consultation with an artist about fixing it, he freehanded over it and we even booked an appointment for next month until i realized i really HATED this tattoo and the artist who did it who not only disrespected me but my sister as well so this piece is just tied with some really bad memories as well. after speaking in depth with the new artist and all the other artists at the shop we all came to the conclusion that ideally, it’d be best to laser it off so i can start fresh with a tattoo i’d love instead of trying to help fix one that had so many problems in it. laser should be your absolute last choice to deal with a tattoo you don’t like after exploring other options, not the immediate first, that is just insane! tattoos should still be thought of as permanent and if you can’t think of them as that then don’t get tattooed yet!

    Such great advice that will help many people 😊😊 I currently only have one small tattoo that I got ten years ago almost, during a flash. Me and my best friend got matching ones. I dont regret it but definitely wouldnt choose that tattoo today. I would be much more tattooed if I had more money, lol. I also worry about not speaking up in time if I'm unhappy with the sketch. I tend to do this with hair, I'll think I like it, then leave, get home and realize I hate it and should have spoken up 😂😂 This has held me back from exploring the tattooing process more but I think I'm ready. I've been dreaming about botanical tattoos for years and know I wont regret them :)

    I've got several tattoos I'm not entirely happy with - but they aren't "bad" tattoos - I just wish certain elements were different. But I've found that I'm just that way - and I'm coming to accept that and over time I forget about what bothered me initially about the tattoo. I've also gotten laser - in fact, I just had laser done a few days ago! That is to "fix" something on a tattoo that was REALLY bothering me. Anyway, I agree with all your comments. And people really need to know to completely remove a tattoo with laser takes at least 12 - 20 treatments that are hugely painful (waaaaay more painful than getting tattooed!! - numbing cream is your friend!) and hugely expensive.

Not “hm should I” because if someone saying “yes get a tattoo” or “no don’t get a tattoo” sways your opinion then you shouldn’t be getting a tattoo.

    Would you ever review a tattoo artist's work from Instagram? I follow a few Korean based tattoo artists whose work looks super crisp an amazing, but I always wonder if an actual tattooed person could see the real truth of it all. If they look like they'd actually last long, if they'd be good on different skin tones, if they're just way too small for the amount of detail, etc.

    Such a helpful video. As are all of your tattoo videos! I’ve watched you for over 4 years now trying to convince myself to decide on a tattoo or even if I want to be a tattooed person or not! And I really am generally an indecisive person, but I definitely would put myself in the category of ‘I love tattoos, but I definitely shouldn’t have them.’ Which I hate because half the time I think ‘I want to collect a sleeve’s worth of tattoos’ but the other half I think ‘I just shouldn’t be a tattooed person.’ So thanks for making this video. I will continue to live vicariously through you and your gorgeous tattoos. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Social media really does totally influence me into thinking I want to be a tattooed person and I generally wouldn’t think I’m a person who is that influenced by things online.

    Love this video, I've always known I wanted tattoos and never second guessed myself, but know that not a lot of people are as impulsive as myself. A ton of people ask me similar questions and it can be difficult to tell them, if they aren't 100% committed, just don't do it! I'd feel so sad if someone got something they weren't super into, especially if they were on the fence to begin with.
