Nobody's forcing Russian players to play in NHL. They have their KHL, European team, and more. Russians themself decided to work for NHL teams only because it's the league they get the most money from. NHL is not a charity and Ovechkin is not a modest hockey guy - he is paid to shoot and he does it well. If there will be enough public pressure that would make NHL lose money, they (NHL and Ovi) will have to make a decision about it. And this documentary is one of those steps to get an idea about public opinion.

They’re literally talking about a guy with close personal ties to Putin not “any Russian outside of Russia” it’s like you didn’t watch the video. He’s not just some random russian he’s a national icon and close to the president. But he is also in a uniquely safe position where he could criticize Putin for his horrible actions and inspire more Russians to voice their opinions against the war but he doesn’t.

Also you realize the consequences of speaking out against the war and Putin are very real and serious. Unless I am mistaken, I believe families and friends in Russia could be questioned or tried in court in Ovechkin’s place if Ovi spoke out. I understand the outrage and I myself would think he’s doing the right thing and is being extremely brave if he condemned Putin and the war. But is it really fair for Canadians/Americans to demand he risk his family’s welfare for the greater good? Would it even do anything? I doubt it.

He hasn’t said anything remotely close to an endorsement of the war since then, and in fact has been pretty quiet on social media and public appearance in general.

Nobody's forcing Russian players to play in NHL. They have their KHL, European team, and more. Russians themself decided to work for NHL teams only because it's the league they get the most money from. NHL is not a charity and Ovechkin is not a modest hockey guy - he is paid to shoot and he does it well. If there will be enough public pressure that would make NHL lose money, they (NHL and Ovi) will have to make a decision about it. And this documentary is one of those steps to get an idea about public opinion.
