      This is whataboutism.
No, Alex didn’t attack Ukraine. He has been clear in his support for Putin and his barbaric war though. Yes, let them play hockey. Let’s though, also hold people accountable for their words, and positions.

    • @jvw_cs

@@EAL67 How has he been clear in his support for the war? He's made it clear he wants the war to end and that what's most important to him is peace on both sides. Proposing the NHL ban a player who had no involvement in an invasion his motherland's government made is just ridiculous. By that logic, if you voted for Biden you'd be supporting genocide for what's happening in Gaza right now? Should we ban every american from the league? If you voted for Trump you're supporting assassination's of foreign countries military generals?
Please clarify what an appropriate response would be to hold him "accountable" as you say for his words and positions?

Ovechkin has already been banned from playing international hockey for Russia, but it’s up to nhl weather they want to ban them or not. Great piece by CBC. The vast majority of hockey fans from countries bordering Russia or having some historical links with Russia absolutely despise Ovi for his long term involvement with Putin, while he's still widely celebrated in North America. There was a day in my parents' life when they woke up, looked out of the window and saw Russian tanks that invaded my country overnight, just like in Ukraine and many other countries in the past. People don't understand that Ovechkin is one of Putin's main puppets and the current regime uses (and controls) hockey as an important propaganda tool.

Nobody's forcing Russian players to play in NHL. They have their KHL, European team, and more. Russians themself decided to work for NHL teams only because it's the league they get the most money from. NHL is not a charity and Ovechkin is not a modest hockey guy - he is paid to shoot and he does it well. If there will be enough public pressure that would make NHL lose money, they (NHL and Ovi) will have to make a decision about it.
