Er, no. Yankees are generally just people living in the north of America, as far as I know. I believe it's considered offensive the further south you go. Goes back to the civil war. That said, I may be wrong, I live in New Zealand lol
Yankees are a term used by the English to define Americans. to copy google " Even before the American Revolutionary War, the term Yankee was used by the British to refer, derisively, to the American colonists. Since the Civil War, American southerners have called all northerners Yankees."
That's the thing about Trump....he has a *_hilariously paltry_* vocabulary. I mean...he literally just recycles the same 30 or so words over and over...no matter what the topic is about. I think Trump's an idiot. But, he has got a point with regards to Russia. China is US's biggest problem and no matter how much chest thumping it does, US is unable to counter China especially due to its closeness with Russia. In trying to reset ties with Russia, Trump is showing flexibilty with regards to changing times that is much needed for a dynamic foreign policy. And he isnt lying about US being not so innocent. Ask any third-world country..they would say Chinese are bad now but US has been exploiting them for years now.. And US's " Democracy Championship" is a sham which everyone knows. Ask Saudi Arabia. And John Oliver despite being brilliant fails to acknowledge these points. We need an update, Russia just declared the LGBT+ community to be "extremists" and have begun a brutal persecution of them. As well asthe war in Ukraine obviously, thingshave got considerably worse there.
We do have a lot of blood on our hands. Saudi Arabia is our Assad regime. We've done illegal invasions, propped up dictators (do some research on Iran), and discriminated against large classes of our own citizens. We are not La La land vs. The Human Centipede. Russia is a centipede and we're a millipede (centipedes are smaller but much more vicious). That being said, "I know you are but what am I" doesn't fix anything. We need to seriously reconsider how we handle these issues and show the Russian people that democracy can work. That foreign policy can work toward positive peace, which is the presence of justice, rather than negative peace, which is the absence of conflict. Which of course, also means not cozying up to freaking Vladimir Putin.
"We need to seriously reconsider how we handle these issues and show the Russian people that democracy can work." My Question to you is, do you even consider asking us, if we need your pseudo democracy ? or is it the same principle like in Libya ? Secondly, Russia is a well-functioning country. l agree that not everything is perfect, and there are still a lot of problems, but the system is working and functioning well enough. Look at the numbers of what has been done since President Yeltsin.
I expressly said we were less vicious; Russia is a centipede and we are a millipede. And plus, we don't need to execute journalists when our corporate-owned media keeps them in their place.

Canadian here. I agree with you, I think from a perspective of peace, all Western countries should've made more efforts to get along with Putin. Sadly I'm seeing in recent weeks the underlying racism against Russia as a whole (driven most strongly by US propaganda) and it's simply tragic.
@@butterfly3dragon471 Western countries tried to get along with Russia. But Putin took that as weakness, and as a sign he can do whatever he wants. Fun fact:I live under Putin's rule whole of my life and when I was tried to commit suicide my last thought was "Damn, that guy will be President more than I lived on this planet" I was 19, now I'm 23, and this guy STILL a President!
I love John Oliver and i think i actually like his show more than i did Daily Show and Colbert Report but being a Russian myself i just can't agree with some things he said in this episode. We don't like Putin because he gets vases from the sea, poses shirtless or acts tough (most people understand that its just bullshit), we like him because before him our country was in the dumps. Our economy collapsed, mobsters were running almost every major city, death rates were actually (not figuratively speaking) higher than during war, poverty was rampant and our first president appeared drunk on TV and inept in general. Then he gave power to Putin and things started to change. You could argue it was luck or rising oil prices but the facts are - we are living better now, feel safer and aren't embarrassed for our president. Then there's an overall issue of painting everything black or white. It's not as simple as that and you can't just call someone's a killer and dismiss opinions of millions of people. You can't dismiss republican opinions because you think they are stupid or based on fears. You can't dismiss liberal opinions because you think they are insane or weak. You can't show some fat fuck on a Russian tv talking nonsense and imply that we all think the same, just like i wouldn't assume that you all listen to Rush Limbaugh or Alex Jones and believe them. It would take some time to explain why or how Russians feel on the subject of Putin, US or Trump but the point is - John Oliver expressed an opinion and there are other opinions and it would only be fair if someday somehow they could've been heard as well.
I think that the bigger point Oliver is making is that Putin is playing on "this is the best you can get" card to Russians (regarding democracy, civil rights etc.), and then pointing to a train wreck called Donald Trump to make his point. And that one absolutely stands. Obama was definitely a very uncomfortable opposition for Putin, while Trump is all that Putin ever wished for and more. And that's the bigger issue. You are entitled to want more from your political leaders, and sorry, but Putin is just not going to let you do that!
Celador John himself was always liberal-swinged and i dont mind that he took the worst about Russia and he jokes about it he is a comedian he cant make jokes about Putin improving the economy or puting oligarchs in prison

I know that I can at least be happy that things are apparently better for many many more Russian people than before Putin was in power. We've had almost eight years of the worst kind of math you can imagine. Oh my god, I can't believe it. Addition and subtraction of the 1s the 2s and the 3s. Its terrible. Its just terrible. Look, if you want to know what 2+2 is, do you want to know what 2+2 is? I'll tell you. First of all the number 2, by the way I love the number 2. It's probably my favorite number, no it is my favorite number. You know what, it's probably more like the number two but with a lot of zeros behind it. A lot. If I'm being honest, I mean, if I'm being honest. I like a lot of zeros. Except for Marco Rubio, now he's a zero that I don't like. Though, I probably shouldn't say that. He's a nice guy but he's like, '10101000101', on and on, like that. He's like a computer! You know what I mean? He's like a computer. I don't know. I mean, you know. So, we have all these numbers and we can add them and subtract them and add them. TIMES them even. Did you know that? We can times them OR divide them, they don't tell you that, and I'll tell you, no one is better at the order of operations than me. You wouldn't believe it. That I can tell you. So, we're gonna be the best on 2+2, believe me. OK? Alright. Thank you."

@@kalon415 I think his nukes are inert. I think that's why its Ukraine he's invading and not all the other countries which border a NATO country. Ukraine has more uranium under it than anywhere else in Europe. I think Putin's nukes are inert and he needs fresh uranium. If he gets it, he will bully the world with nukes as he conquers country after country until he is Emperor of the World. Why do I think his nukes are inert? Because part of his Demand was an accusation that if Ukraine were to join NATO then nukes would be put there by some other country, he didn't say who, lets just call it, Them. Anyway, Alaska is a few short miles from Russia and I'm pretty damn sure the US, a NATO country, has nukes there which can circle the world five times and still have enough gas to get to Moscow. So he's either counting on the whole world forgetting that he already borders a NATO country or he is actually afraid because he doesn't have working nukes anymore.

Jason M Trump uses nouns as well, for example: Sweden.

You could make one of those "sound board" things used in prank calls....populate it with 60 words maximum...and literally use it to recreate *_everything_* he's ever said or ever will say. It's shocking just how limited his vocabulary is. Then again, he's about as literate as a really dumb 5 year old, at best.
avedic Did ya hear about his explanation of Uranium?
This is the comment section in you tube, no body here knows what verbs and nouns adverbs and adjectives are.
And Trump supporters use the same argument I present to accuse liberal media of being rigid and intolerant in their own sense. And this liberal intolerance is what is adding to make things worse!

Posted 3 years ago and Oliver is still alive. :)
Maybe his void is where Russia keeps him kidnapped
Maybe not. Maybe that's just what putin wants us to think.
"cool" is John's way of saying "whatever the fuck that was, it impressed/distracted me for a bit."
Imagine John frantically had to discard all the prewritten scripts to scramble up a Putin 2.0 episode over the week.
Fahrenheit4051 we don't execute our journalists period so fuck off to Russia if you agree with their way of murder.
So it is bad to execute the own people, but it's totally ok to execute strangers? Hey just invade another country.
Vadim Kaz ah, but that's the advantage of getting rid of Journalists, now isn't it? No one can show them to you now, lol.
John Oliver should release his One Like Putin parody as a single and donate the proceeds to Ukrainian charities and community organizations.
Somehow the audience's laughter reminds me of the good days we have left behind
Sahi baat hai bhai
Same I can’t watch the show now without audience
Ah. Simpler times. We were so young back then.
why do people keep saying that this is "fake news"? it is not presented as news. It is entertainment.
Because people are stupid? We are on the internet, remember.
It still forms peoples opinions.
No... it tries to make political statement while being funny. (It fails at both)
It's called satire, and can be taken seriously.
It's really not. Not entertaining.

Holy shit, Trump sounds just like Putin when Putin is brought up.

aneTix is Exactly. That's what is scary. That is trumps idea of a strong leader. An egomaniacal narcissist is incapable of understanding what makes democracy great

As always, good shit, John.
Kris Doyle based on what? your dumb furry ass.
Jake Trawinski Haters gonna hate. I enjoy John's comedy. You're free to disagree, but insults were uncalled for.

Kris Doyle I apologize but it was almost as if the low hanging fruit was scraping the ground on that one.
PatronofDeath But it's much better to voice disagreement and opinions without using personal attacks. Using such low blows only undermines whatever you're trying to say.

As someone who lives in Finland and is now thinking how we might be next in Putins list let me tell you something. It would be so great to get along with Russia. So great. Excellent even. But like John said, it wont be easy. It's almost like North Korea, except that Russia is way bigger
You can’t get along with Russia the same way you get along with other democratic countries. We in Eastern Europe have been saying that for ages, but all that happened was we were accused of russophobia. Don’t get me wrong I don’t have anything against ordinary Russians, but the Russian state cannot be trusted.
Let me welcome you to NATO, albeit a little early.

I like the one at the end, all the catchiness without the support of Putin.
About Putin's popularity-- He's not enjoying large amounts of support in the largest cities of Russia, but the country side. He has simply ran down all the real opposition so there's no alternative anymore. He's also incredibly smart, unlike Trump but the goals are similar.
Russia may not have a choice but USA still does, so take it.
Kimmo Laine Same in Turkey. I belive there is a Guide to Future Autotarians book out there.
Now we know what happens when he finally turns senile. Let's hope this ends him.
For a liberal show that bashes Trump and Co. regularly, there's a lot of Trump fans here in the comments
Trump fans don't need safe spaces.
InqWiper Yet they cry out when they get triggered.
InqWiper
Yes they do need safe spaces.
You can disagree with someone politically and still watch something. If you only listen to your own political bubble and never listen to the opinions of the opposite site you will forever stay ignorant.
Trump supporters are liberals who don't get what they want. And yes they do need safe spaces. lol. Everyone needs safe spaces. Left and right, so when they don't like what they hear or read they have a place to run to and yell or cry. Thought of it is hilarious.
I'm from Russia. That's funny, I'd really glad to see somewho like Mr. Oliver on our TV.
Fun fact:I live under Putin's rule whole of my life and when I was tried to commit suicide my last thought was "Damn, that guy will be President more than I lived on this planet"
I was 19, now I'm 23, and this guy STILL a President!
Celador
John himself was always liberal-swinged and i dont mind that
he took the worst about Russia and he jokes about it
he is a comedian
he cant make jokes about Putin improving the economy or puting oligarchs in prison
Soo what you say is Putin save Russian and there for he can kill all is opposant and steal money from the country. I don't say is good or bad I just ask, is that what you say ?
TL;DR: I am russian, I don't agree :,,,(
I know that I can at least be happy that things are apparently better for many many more Russian people than before Putin was in power. I'd like to see all the countries in the world do well..we don't have to shove each other down to see progress towards peace and prosperity in the world. So I hope that in the future your next leader is better even.
That feeling when you are Russian and watching John Oliver talk about your country.
And what is that feeling?
@@billybonghoardin that's freaking bizarre cause our television cannot even say a pun about the president that critisize him. It's extremly unuasual to see american television critising their president so freely, hope we can get that point of real democracy soon :(

Does the media really kiss Putin’s ass in Russia?
And what do most/many Russians think about Trump?
Well, if John Oliver dies, I'll have suspicions.
The reason John Oliver isn't put down for insulting him is that he doesn't threaten the yolk of power. He'll disrupt some of their plans, but not their hold. The United states government spares no time offing those who truly threaten to upend their power. This is why labor movements are attacked so viciously.
The Lion have more thing to care about than being bothered by the clown... and the suicide cattles.
Lions are brave, protect their pride, and eat to survive. Putin is a walking ego, who is so weak he discourages true debate or critique. A strong man would face the criticism head on. Murdering dissenters is a sign of a weak mentality, and piss poor ideals.
Dont worry, he is no Michael Hastings.
