Been eating Aldi beans for the last decade. Great tasting with a rich sauce and the cost makes them taste even sweeter. Anyone buying Heinz beans or indeed anything from that greedy brand needs to have a word with themselves!

Love it. The problem is a lot of us were brought up with "Beans means Heinz" marketing. But these days, with prices like that, I've dropped the food brand snobbery and when I eat something not Heinz, I just think "If I was served this in a restaurant, would I like it?"... The answer is nearly always yes and at a 3rd of the price too.

The only Beanz Meanz Heinz ad I can remember, the poem went as follows:
My dad and me are worried
We had baked beans for tea
But they weren’t Heinz beans, I told dad
      And dad had to agree
I wonder why we like them
Not Heinz beans, I can tell
Next time mum goes out shopping
      I’d better go as well!
(We’ve got to keep an eye on mum!).
      A million housewives every day
Pick up a tin of beans and …
Throw them at little perishers like you!
Actually - I think that last line was from a Benny Hill mickey-take!

I don't know how true it is but I've heard countless people saying this so it must have some validity to it. That store brand foods or the XL range (I think its called that) are all just proper brand names like birds-eye , Heinz , young etc but slightly flawed versions that weren't deemed good enough for the brands. Just like you can buy really cheap wonky fruit and vegetables because they don't look perfect but essentially taste exactly the same. Like I say I've never actually fact checked it or anything but many people swear its true and it seems plausible to me

Heinz have just revived the "Beans Means" tag (someone getting a delivery with "we had to change the beans brand rushing to a shop to get Heinz as BMH ) as it is noticeable that Heinz good are not selling for the reasons in this vlog-47p v £1.40,so they're obviously trying to revive the BMH myth. Noticed that other brands are advertising "It's the taste" etc to try and get customers back. If -as our bald taster says-there's minimum difference in taste (and I'd say he's right) that doesn't justify 93p difference in price.

I’m a pensioner, old state pension and no private one. By a sleight of hand by our wonderful government my pension has been reduced by nearly £100 per week this year (paying pensions is too expensive says the billionaire Prime Minister, ignoring my 55 years of contributions) so cost cutting is now a real necessity for me. Aldi only opened in my town about 4 months ago and I’m finding that many Aldi products are just as good as the national brands, with really significant savings to be made. Keep up the comparisons Gareth, you’re doing a great job - spot on mate !

I’m on a state pension and I get around £9000 per year, admittedly I’m on the new pension but even so, the old pension can’t possibly pay that much less! It's actually very easy and you can make a big batch in one go and then freeze them in portion sizes to suit. - Get a big bag of dried beans, haricot are the ones that "baked beans" are, but you can also use cannelloni or just plain white beans. Much, much tastier than any you can buy.

I have been eating Aldi baked beans for years and they are excellent. Also Aldi tomato soup is superior to that of Heinz and a fraction of the cost. I add a little Aldi Worcestershire sauce to mine also. Food snobbery is an expensive pursuit. They hav eopened a new HUGE Aldo store close to me next door to a M&S Food Hall and people watching is a very interesting pastime.

Sainsbury’s had a ‘half price Heinz’ event last weekend for Nectar members, and we bought a few beanz multipacks at 4 for £2. Pretty good, but more sauce and less beans than we seem to recall.
Prefer the old Aldi ‘Corale’ beans to the new Bramwell’s. Tried a few others and settled on Tesco’s.

Way back when 1992 i use to work for gateways stores ending up as the grocery manager doing the warehouse orders dealing directly with company reps. I onced asked the rep from heniz why there baked beans where x3 the price of the own label beans, he said that heniz used larger and better quality harricot beans from the USA and better quality tomato from spain for the sauce and they where cooked in the can longer to give an better "texture" etc.
I did check and the beans where larger than the gateway/tesco/sainsbury own label then and the tomato sauce did have what i considered a better flavour from there spice blend. I alway thought that heniz used maggi season or similar in there tomato sauces. A drop of worcestershire sauce or maggi added to own label beans was a quick easy and cheap way to improve the own label sauces. Oh and the standard can content weight was 220g/440g back then which was universal legal standard at that time.
To be honest now i see no differance really between own label brand and heniz harricott bean size todau and the sauces are the same as always. Mind you the cans have 10-11% less contents, while the cans stayed the same european standard size.

My favourite for either beans or tinned chopped tomatoes it to heat a little lard in the fry pan fine dice some decent smokey bacon fry that until starting to crisp and add the beans or tomatoes, pop a lid on and fry for another 3-5 minutes. the beans or mainly the chopped toms absorb all the flavour, it is ambrosia.

I switched over to Supermarket "Saver" budget beans years ago, after a lady in a Sheffield chippy gave me the tip of putting in a decent knob of butter when cooking on the hob - that creams up the sauce and makes it more "claggy" as you say - I've done them that way ever since.
And if you struggle with eating salad leaves as I do, chill some beans and have a spoonful on the plate with a dash of salad cream - really helps makes things like lettuce bearable... :)

They also have a budget range "Hubbards" baked beans which I've yet to try, though I did give Hubbards spaghetti hoops a go for the sake of variety and they were a lot sweeter than I remember spaghetti hoops being at school (mind you, this was over 30 years ago). This is the challenge that own brands face is matching that distinct taste. If the stores' own brand come out of the Heinz factory they're going to ensure their flavour remains the stronger and richer! If they're that close in flavour, I'll give them a whirl. Thanks.

Thickness shouldn’t be confused with richness. It only needs a bit of corn starch to make it as thick as you want; but to make it truly rich you need the flavour.
You can always make a weak sauce as rich as you want it to be by adding a bit of tomato puree and a bit of smoked or hot paprika or garlic puree. You’ll save a lot of money and have the taste that you like.
