Brilliant comparison as always, Gareth. Spam has loads of extra salt, but to be fair, those who choose spam are usually the ones who like extra salt. Since I've lived in the USA for quite some time in the past, there are different ways of cooking this world class delicacy. One thing that is different... Some places in the USA will cook spam until it is literally crunchy. It's similar to the way people cook streaky bacon in the USA. Cook it until it's crunchy with no pink inside at all. THAT is the way to enjoy spam. Once you try it that way, you'll always cook it until crunchy. Try it.. cook it until it is crunchy all the way through... I will wager you will love it that way as I do.
I use diced spam for the kids special fried rice, which is the diced ham and scrambled eggs with plain white rice added along with peas, sweetcorn and carrots with soya sauce and oyster sauce added in the wok. They love it quick and easy to make
Use to have alot of spam as a kid, mum would cut the block into slices, bread them then shallow fry in lard. We have not bought spam for decades as we always bought the cheaper stuff as there was sod all differance once it was cooked or in a sandwich bar the price. Thanks for the video, Take care, God bless one and all. Edit: look up korean army stew a great winter warmer.

A lot of people turn their noses up at Spam or any of the other canned meats. I say everything in moderation. I love Crispy Spam Egg n Bean sarnies or in a meal especially when camping. As I was growing up mum used to occasionally put Chapped Ham n Pork sarnies up if we were going out on a picnic. Bring it on is what I say.
Hi Gareth from Spain. I have only eaten Spam once and that was in the form of a fritter courtesy of the US Airforce and it was YUK. At least the Aldi one had traffic lights whereas the Spam one didn't appear to. We could have had more discussion on the hazards of eating them.
I side with atomic shrimp I dislike the lip left behind on the tin, which makes it harder remove from the can it's better to use a can opener if you can find a good opener to used on these oblong cans
I use the Plumrose version for 'fake away' night cut into a square and fried to put onto a hamburger instead of a meat pattie. I've used the Aldi version as well - nothing wrong with it. Great comparison.
For spam to be £10 per kg, is absolutely scandalous. Given that pork loin isn't even priced that high, what on earth are they thinking? It's interesting that the Aldi product has less calories and less fat.
When I was a kid, ( many many years ago ), I used to love SPAM fritters. It also went well on salads, or fried with chips and a fried egg. The Aldi one for me is better for 2 reasons. One, it works out cheaper and two it has far less salt. As for the meat ingredients? They are the same basically. Tinned meat prices are certainly on the rise, so a saving of 32p per 100g is quite a saving over time. I do agree with the person who suggested buying from a Polish shop, ( I think you did a comparison on them before? ). I used to love the COMPO tins of chopped pork. Another great review Gareth 👍🏻. Showing where to save a few bob and still get a decent product is brilliant.
I remember spam fried in batter at school, with chips and a pink gravy!. Just find it too salty nowadays. Always handy to have a tin just in case though. Great vlog.

I had some Spam recently for the first time in years. Smells disgusting when frying it but tastes good. I don't think my heart would appreciate me eating it regularly.
Nice video. I am Dutch so we have this too but the cans from Easten Germany were very tasty too, during those days. We ate it when we were there, visiting family. They had a sort of gelly on top, inside the can. I did not see that gelly on your spam. You can chop it in mini squares and mix it in the macaroni saus/salat.
I instantly pressed Watch, when I saw this one 👌🙌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Does anybody remember the tinned meat in Aldi, years ago ? It wasn’t around much and disappeared off the shelves more than ten years ago now I think. Totally grateful to see this one and always appreciate what you do
13:34 well corrected at the end about it being 100 gms. Also, the tin says eat within 2 days of opening so you have less time if you live alone. Or, you could save more money and enjoy Honey roast ham instead (like we do)
I reckon the slight yellow tinge of the Spam is a thin film of fat all over the outside of the meat, left on in hopes of improving release from the can. The case for one or the other is moot for me, because I only have actual Spam available -- however, there are usually at least a dozen different varieties of Spam on the shelf, including one that has the sodium reduced by 25% -- this is my favorite. There is also a trick for reducing the salt by parboiling before frying. I find that Spam bakes quite well, too; try it in the airfryer sometime. I have a whole cookbook on the shelf dedicated to Spam, intended for a Hawaiian reader but filled with vaguely racist illustrations (depending on your sense of humor, I suppose.) Oh, and save that can -- cleaned and with the top and bottom cut off, it comes in useful for making musubi!
How to get Spam from the can, keep at room temperature remove the lid then smack the open end down on a wooden chopping board then shake the Spam from the tin onto a plate works every time.
You've just popped up in my feed! I don't follow any food related channels but I love the "everyday" foods you're testing! (I don't eat most of them any more but i think I'm going to have to search out some new sections in my supermarket now)! All the best to you!

I told her of my experience and thought I would leave it there. However, based on your review, I think I will go and get some Aldi look-alike, batter it up and give it a go. I use diced spam for the kids special fried rice, which is the diced ham and scrambled eggs with plain white rice added along with peas, sweetcorn and carrots with soya sauce and oyster sauce added in the wok. They love it quick and easy to make
bought some the other day, can't wait to try it now. great vid dude😊
Hope you enjoy it! Your welcome
Love Spam, but will try the Aldi version now because of your video! I have high blood pressure so the reduced salt should be a bonus!
Robert, if you slice it and boil the slices for 3-5 minutes first, then fry it, the saltiness disappears.
Thanks. I have never tried it fried! @@sunniertimer598
Use to have alot of spam as a kid, mum would cut the block into slices, bread them then shallow fry in lard. We have not bought spam for decades as we always bought the cheaper stuff as there was sod all differance once it was cooked or in a sandwich bar the price. Better to buy the own label versions and season them yourself. Always good to have a good stock of canned goods in the pantry especially with all the stupidity going on at home and around the world. Thanks for the video, Take care, God bless one and all. Edit: look up korean army stew a great winter warmer.
Obviously made in the same place and even the same kind of tin with a different label. I wouldn't describe spam as high cuisine but it is a handy product to have in the cupboard and it's pretty tasty.
You can use the can as a guide to cut straight pieces of spam and desired thickness as it comes out
And with a hot mustard spread over the top in a crusty roll.😊
Spam & chips ! Takes me back 😂
@CathyB52 Sounds to me like a fried egg would round it of nicely!
Yes it is considerably expensive nowadays compared to back in the day. However tastes great. I always have a tin of it in the cupboard along with a tin of bacon fry . Good video 👍
keep plenty of these tins in your cupboards, if the leccy goes out over winter, these will help keep your body warm even if eaten straight out of the tin
You should try spam with sausage and cheese on a muffin... a spam fritter is disappointing to be honest. It doesn't represent spam
As a self confessed Spamaholic I've noticed the price of it rocketing recently, so will definitely try the Aldi version.
Cheers as always Gareth.
You're welcome 😊
The price of Spam is shocking 😡
I side with atomic shrimp I dislike the lip left behind on the tin, which makes it harder remove from the can it's better to use a can opener if you can find a good opener to used on these oblong cans
I use the Plumrose version for 'fake away' night cut into a square and fried to put onto a hamburger instead of a meat pattie. I've used the Aldi version as well - nothing wrong with it. Great comparison.
Cheers pal
Thank you for the video, with the difference you could get a tin of every day essentials baked beans, just a thought xx
Great idea! Xx
Hi if you punch a small hole in the bottom of the tin it lets the meat come out a lot easier. 👍🏻😎👍🏻
Yes Gerry I've got the Polish one in my cupboard. Cheers Gerry.
Got spam fritters in the freezer now
Compo chopped pork? You mean bacon grill?
@@johnnunn8688 we have pork and ham, luncheon meat, and bacon grill
@@johnnunn8688
Your right I do. I’ve just got used to calling bacon grill and chopped pork the same thing 🥴🥴. My bad.
I remember spam fried in batter at school, with chips and a pink gravy!. Just find it too salty nowadays. Always handy to have a tin just in case though. Great vlog.
So good!
I bought a tin of spam last month and it cost me €5.40! I love spam ad got it as a treat because of the price. Never again. I can buy a large chicken for less to feed the family and then some. 👍
@philipmckeon. Good point well made
Thank you sir. 👍
Thanks for sharing!
I love chopped pork - like you, fried or cold it's gorgeous! Thanks for a great review Gareth, really good analysis and a fair comparison. I wonder where I'd buy from . . . . . 😉😉
Thanks for watching!
You can give the can squeeze from the short sides, and it causes the vacuum to break. You will hear a distinct when it happens. Didn't occur to me that my mother taught me a life lesson back in the 60's. Stopped eating meats/dairy years ago, but still love to watch cooking shows.
I would try both
I put a hole in the bottom of the can. It helps to make the contents slide out a lot easier. Thanks for all your reviews. Keep them coming.
That's a great idea!
I've tried both for fishing and the carp prefer the proper spam, they also prefer hovis toastie bread over the cheap stuff, it's not just us lot who are fussy 😂
I remember feeding fish with bread & they definitely prefered the brown bread
I love PEK chopped pork for the salt 🧂 content 😂😂
its realy nice
Pek’s Nice on a butty but not nice cooked.
PEK is very nice like that way egg and chips and some dippy bread for the jelly and egg yolk
Pek is lovely it's £2.50 in Asda but sometimes it's only £1 I grab 4 or 5 tins when it's £1 , bacon grill from Aldi is nice
@@garryirons7203 had that on toast for brekkie yesterday, good stuff when there’s no spam in.
When I was little, mom used to fry spam for our supper. We had it with mash potato & peas or beans. It was delicious. Not sure if I’d like it now, going to have to try it again some 50yrs later…..
Sounds great!
If you puncture the bottom of the can a couple of times it releases the suction of the meat and it normally just slips out, love a bit of spam,so versatile fried or not and in a fritter,I'm going to have to go out tomorrow and buy a can of that Bramwells pork and ham and try it in the air fryer, looks so tasty, another good video big pal
Yes good idea mate
I had some Spam recently for the first time in years. Smells disgusting when frying it but tastes good. I don't think my heart would appreciate me eating it regularly.
Nice video. I am Dutch so we have this too but the cans from Easten Germany were very tasty too, during those days. We ate it when we were there, visiting family. They had a sort of gelly on top, inside the can. I did not see that gelly on your spam. You can chop it in mini squares and mix it in the macaroni saus/salat.
Sounds great!
Thanks for the video, I watched a guy on TH-cam, recommend piercing the bottom of the tin to aid spam extraction. I tried it and it works a treat!
Thanks for the info!
I instantly pressed Watch,when I saw this one 👌🙌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Does anybody remember the tinned meat in Aldi, years ago ? It wasn’t around much and disappeared off the shelves more than ten years ago now I think.
Totally grateful to see this one and always appreciate what you do
Cheers Glenda
13:34 well corrected at the end about it being 100 gms. Also, the tin says eat within 2 days of opening so you have less time if you live alone. Or, you could save more money and enjoy Honey roast ham instead (like we do)
There are some excelent budget range products in most supermarkets now. Well worth shopping around in these trying times. Keep up the good work.
Cheers
Used to get spam fritters potatoe & veg skhool dinners loved them.
@ 3:31 that's the exact same print too on the top of the cans Gareth.
How to get Spam from the can, keep at room temperature remove the lid then smack the open end down on a wooden chopping board then shake the Spam from the tin onto a plate works every time.
It’s 920 pm in Perth Aus BFG. I just got in from work. So glad your on pal. Funny as usual! Lmfao. Love your work boss
You're welcome 😊
You've just popped up in my feed! I don't follow any food related channels but I love the "everyday" foods you're testing! (I don't eat most of them any more but i think I'm going to have to search out some new sections in my supermarket now)! All the best to you!
Wow, thank you!
Remembering Spam fritters from school, I tried the genuine Spam fritters a couple of years ago. They were way too salty. I don't remember Spam fritters at school being THAT salty. I didn't like them so much that I never revisited them. Anyway, my current girlfriend has recently mentioned school Spam fritters and her desire to have them again, probably having seen them mentioned on one of these FB nostalgia groups. I told her of my experience and thought I would leave it there. However, based on your review, I think I will go and get some Aldi look-alike, batter it up and give it a go. See if I can get some brownie points 😄
Haha thank you
There is a reduced salt SPAM variety available, or you could just get the cheaper one...

Sugar and butter was popular in the old days .
What about the amount in the tins IE so much per gramme? I notice the tins are different sizes or have i missed a bit?
Thanks, I don't buy a lot of chopped pork and ham. It's mainly just to keep in the cupboard if I can't think of anything else to eat. I only buy Spam when it's on offer but even then it's dearer that Aldi. I'll definitely give the Aldi one a try.
The Asda "Bacon Grill" (same type of tin/product) is my favourite, and good value.
My Dad told me stories of swapping tins of bully beef with US soldiers for their spam in Italy.
I like mine sliced thin and browned. I use it as a sub for bacon sometime. Love a spam, tomato and mayo sandwich. My mother would fry it for a family meal. Guess that's why I still crave it sometimes.
Sounds great!

I love spam but I'm going for cheapest one all the time at moment 👍
As they teach the aspiring chefs at the Cordon Bleu, the flavor's in the yellow when cooking canned meat.
Spam cooked on the old hexi burner, that'll bring back memories for you. 😁
Cleaning your mess tins on grass lol
Going to aldis tomorrow may pick me up a few tins .Great honest review mate .God bless you and your family. Lee
Cornbeef hotpot used to be a reasonable price meal not anymore I paid almost £3 for a tin of cornbeef haven't bought spam for a while so thanks for this review ❤
Grew up on Spam fried. as is spam fritter also cut in chunks 2cups of rice chicken oxo 2cups of water and bake in the oven last half hour cook uncovered. Add veg cheese topping. Onion at the beginning if liked. Cooked that cis I had nothing else in and sounds crap but was tasty great show Gareth
Spam, absolutely love Spam, since I was a kid spam, and eggs 😂 do you remember bacon grill in Military Army Rations
Bacon grill ah yes
Both taste lovely, grew up on spam,
Brilliant fishing baits
Good review!
Glad you enjoyed it
Yeah but is it any good for fishing
Eazy chief you ok pal, once again nice one for the vid. It just shows you paye for the name alot of the times. All the best from GRIMSBY.
I still prefer sfam absolutely been going for years and I love the salt taste, A top tip I use Before you open boil your kettle and pour it over the tin then it slides out 😊
Conclusion , Bramwells is best value and healthier too, another great comparison test Gareth.
2 knives to avoid cross contamination but frying both together the oil coming out will taint the other
Bit oldskool today mate - nicely done
Helloooo. When I use spam I grate it on the larger holes add a bit of chopped onion and put it in puff pastry. Cut them as you would if making sausage rolls and bake. Tasty hot or cold.
Top tip, maybe with a cheese option?👍
@@diogenesegarden5152 And why not. Ha ha.
@@wildwolf2567 that might well knock my sister’s cheating sausage rolls made from herby sausages and Jusroll puff pastry, off the top spot👍. All her posh friends think she has a secret recipe.😂
There's a Monty Python sketch on spam. It's quite funny😂😂
Hello. Can I ask where you got your plates from?. They're great. Thank you.
Spam fritter from the chippy, lovely with batter.
Paying for the brand, I keep away from processed food but takes me back to childhood
Spam with the home bargains Mayflower curry sauce, Gaz. A revelation!
Just back from a long weekend at Centre Parcs at Penrith, food wasn’t stunning for the price of it!
