  • www.basicsconf... || By: Matt Boswell - Of all the major world religions, Christianity is one of the few in which people gather together for the express purpose of singing. Christians, guest speaker Matt Boswell teaches, are a singing people-and no wonder, since we have such good news to sing about! In this talk, Boswell encourages church leaders to articulate a clear theological vision of congregational singing-one rooted in the fact that when we sing, we bless God’s name, disciple the church, and declare the hope of Christ to a listening world.

I agree. Sadly our worship leader gets almost everything, besides his own songs, from Hillsong or Bethel or Elevation. Cityalight is so much more biblical.

I have recently joined a reformed baptist church and the Regulative principle is what is followed. Hymns only from the Trinity Hymnal with piano. How does one justify other types of worship that the elders would not agree with, mainly instrumental? I'm not really sold on its dogmatism but do love that they desire to glorify Christ alone and focus strictly on the worship of God. But I feel like something is missing in that understanding in not bashing churches that do NOT hold to the RPW. I am a former worship leader myself and play guitar and love instrumental music such as The Gettys stuff, CityALight, and Sovereign Grace. Sad to say, music is not very big in our church, unfortunaltely.

Sorry, I am from the Netherlands, but what does RPW mean?

That is a very narrow application of the regulative principle. When Paul tells the Ephesians and Colossians to, "sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs" he is activating the Psalms in their entirety. Why would we sing the Psalms without singing them how they instruct us to sing them? The Psalms recommend instruments in the superscripts, they model using instruments in their descriptions of worship, and they command using instruments in their lyrics. The meta-storyline of the Psalms progresses from meditation on the law of God (Psalm 1) to rejoicing in the person of God (Psalm 150) using every class of instrument available. It seems silly that we should merely sing the Psalms without singing them in the manner they prescribe for us. Nowhere in the NT is instrumental worship described as a "shadow" or "type" of something which has been fulfilled in the work of Christ.

What is eternal life? Jesus said, “this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3). Theos-logia the knowing of God is theology. Theology, according to Christ is eternal life. Even now already we enter the realm of eternal life by theology. Pastor Boswell as one of the new young ‘gifts of Christ given to the Church’ (Ephesians 4) profoundly underscores the sublime significance of singing to the Lord, together with the people of God, and with mature sound theology. Thank you.

Dangerous streams of music (Sources) should not be sung because Spurgeon did it. They didn't have CCLI money supporting the source back then. Today these dangerous sources live off royalties, financing expansion. They hold conferences and worship concerts to gain further influence. This happens in large part because of the internet and instant access to music as well as dangerous theological content. None of this happened in Spurgoen's day.

I have to disagree that the author of the song is not important. If they are still alive and collecting royalties on the song from CCLI, which your church probably subscribes to, then you are sending money to support that person who has the heretical views. Of course, we shouldn’t fellowship with them but I think that communicating with them financially is approving of who they are and what they believe. Most of what we hear on the radio it’s not Christian Contemporary Music(CCM)but cce. christian contemporary entertainment. You can see how much I truly despise this stuff as I could not even bring myself to put one capital letter in that last category.
