I think it’s worth leaving a comment to suggest the reading of Katie Walker Grimes “Fugitive Saints: Catholicism and the Politics of Slavery” This text reads Claver’s (and others) hagiography and various accounts of his life in terms of africanized slavery and it’s afterlife today. This text is so important to read alongside other accounts! Worth the read!
We, "so spoiled in the United States..." I resemble that remark. We are a society and Church that presumes well-being. Well said how we find it difficult to relate to Saints who beat back their revulsion abd climbed aboard slave ships.
A historical fact....the romans crucified thousands of people....any one apposing their laws....when the romans defeated Spartacus...5000 rebels surrendered....they were put to death by way off crucifixion....they were hung on crosses along the road to Rome...and left to rot....ax a reminder of what would happen to you if you went against them...
