    Every generation needs a Dunstan.

      I think some Dunstans just never become public figures. They do make the world a better place though, for sure!

    Another fascinating video. This is what I deeply love about England the passage of rites and rituals through the ages. He must have been a remarkable man. Thank you for this.

    I remember quite well that part of the recent coronation where the archbishop exhorted the king to "Stand firm! etc". Prior to that, I had the impression that the king was struggling not to waver under the weight of the crown; to me the face and body of this elderly man, in the many close-ups, showed signs of strain, possibly even pain. But the archbishops's words seemed to make the king immediately straighten a little, and his face showed renewed alertness. The words conveyed the support, it seemed to me, which the king needed at that point in those arduous proceedings, and I bet he was glad to hear them. I didn't know that they were written by St Dunstan , but how fortunate it is that they have been retained all these millenia.

      Charles is not a well man. I am surprised he was able to do all of the activities during the coronation week.

    Allan, such a fascinating insight into the life and times of Dunstan. And a clear link to the coronation ritual we have just witnessed. It is so powerful to realise that a prayer composed a thousand years ago is still being recited today. Thank you for your scholarship and research as always.

    The name Dunstan is well known to me. That was the name given to the lake created , when the small Central Otago town of Cromwell, where my mother's parents had retired, was partially drowned in order to make more hydroelectricity. I was distressed by this as a child.
    Living in Dunedin, New Zealand, (colonized by Strict Presbyterian Scots predominantly, my schooling secular and religious did not cover Anglo Saxon times or even Oliver Cromwell's impact on more recent English history.
    Your fascinating presentation is like an Open University of very high calibre, Allan.

    Thank you, what a lovely presentation! I confess, watching as I was in the middle of the night here with merriment rather nearer to hand than the solemnity that was due, that I laughed at that point when the A of C cried, "Stand Firm" when the king was so clearly sitting before him.

      @@allanbarton I do have a question or two about Edward V, who I believe is the most compelling example of medieval mystery about him. I was reading an article about him and there was a story about some workmen at St. George's Chapel in 1789 accidentally broke into the vault of Edward IV and found the king and his wife but also two children's coffins. The tomb was inscribed with the names of George, Duke of Bedford and Mary but later their remains were found elsewhere in the chapel. I wonder if these were in fact the missing princes in the Tower. It lists a source from the chapter records of St. George. Did you do a video about this, since I enjoyed your Royal Vault piece. Thanks!

    Thank you Allen, absolutely fascinating history and detail. What strikes me is how quickly King's came and went, its hard to keep up, especially with all the Anglo saxon names sounding similar and mostly beginning with E...why was that? Sorry, if its a ridiculous question, but I've often wondered why. Regards Mick

    • @neilbuckley1613
      @neilbuckley1613 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The names begining with E [or rather the now lost letter combining A and E ] were hereditary in that branch of the house of Wessex. There was a branch of the house of Northumbria who had names beginning with Os. The two commonest pre - fixes of the names were Ed [fortunate/rich] and Ethel [noble] rendered Athel in Athelstan but the same pre - fix.
