This song was written for Tom Jones by another British artist, Lonnie Donegan, whose son, Peter, auditioned for ‘The Voice UK’, in which Tom was a judge.
Tom turned his chair for Peter and they sang this song together ❤

Hi Darren. That is a lovely thought but an Urban Myth and I had the pleasure of communicating with Peter Donegan on TH-cam about it.
Lonnie Co-Wrote this in 1961 and Sir Tom was Tom Woodward from the Valleys singing in The Tommy Scott Orchestra then and not known outside that area.
The rest i history and he made this song his own.
It's Not Unusual to think that but Tom was still near The Green Green Grass of Home back in 1961:)

What a voice! Jones is 83 now and still with us. "Jones was married to his high school girlfriend, Melinda Rose "Linda" Trenchard, from 2 March 1957 until her death from cancer on 10 April 2016. They were married at the age of 16 when she became pregnant; their son, Mark, was born shortly after the wedding. To support his young family, Jones worked in construction and at a glove factory before finding success as a singer. He stayed married to Trenchard despite his many well-publicized infidelities. After his wife's death, Jones sold the family's Los Angeles mansion and its contents (apart from treasured photos) and moved into an apartment in London, which was his wife's dying wish. Jones met his idol Elvis Presley in 1965 at the Paramount film stage, when Elvis was filming Paradise, Hawaiian Style. They became good friends, spending more time together in Las Vegas singing and carousing until the early hours at Presley's private suite. The friendship endured until Presley's death in 1977. In the 2006 film Flushed Away, the main character, Roddy, is mistaken for Jones by another character while Roddy performs "She's a Lady". Jones' song, "What's New Pussycat?", is played during the ending credits. In the video game Team Fortress 2, the Scout character is a collector of Tom Jones merchandise, and Jones is depicted being murdered by the Soldier character in the tie-in comics. The Spy character later uses his shape-shifting ability to convince the Scout that Jones is his father. Jones is also depicted using the phrase "What's new pussycat?" several times."

whats great about tom is that recently he used to be one of the longest running judges on the uk version of the voice tv show over here. so cool guy and very open and welcoming full of love for everybody. and he would actually often interrupt the show with his little stories and things about where he's been in the past gigging (everywhere basically)... also he knew his area of expertise and would really develop those singers coming along in his sphere of familiarity. and then there was the time where the management tried to kick tom off the show, and cut him out the next season or replace him. and nobody was having any of it. and his public statement about that to the press. tom is absolutely one of the coolest people out there and still going strong, even way cooler now imho. dude is amazing

Always blows me away that when my Mam and Dad were young and courting Tom Jones was a local lad selling vacuum cleaners during the week and doing his rounds singing on the circuit of working men's clubs in the South Wales valley's on the weekends. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts on music that I grew up with and loved. My wife and I went to Vegas and saw Tom Jones, who at the time was celebrating his 60th birthday, perform. The show was incredible. His voice was still top notch as he did all of his hits (I might recommend that you listen to Delilah and Green, Green Grass of Home at some point). It was a great show. I am not trying to be insensitive but at one point a larger, full figured woman who was behind us threw a pair of panties onstage while shouting, "I love you Tommy," as her underwear opened up like a parachute and floated down to the stage. You could see Jones smile as they floated to the ground, however, being the true gentleman that he is, he picked up the panties, thanked her and blew her a kiss. The audience burst our in applause. Later, he gave her an autographed photo and kissed her on the cheek. Such a class act he is and it was evident just how much his fans truly meant to him. My wife and I bought a CD of his and listened to it (a couple of times) on our drive back to Phoenix.

As a side note, they voice UK said there were going to let tom go, wil said if tom goes he goes, just to show there friendship, on toms 80th, wil arranged a live stream happy birthday chat with stevie wonder, stevie had been on toms show back in the day, it brought tom to tears, to has sang with all the great, even meetin elvis, no one from that era, tom has not sang with or knows,

Though he had no hand in the writing, Tom Jones is so talented he makes us feel like it's his own story. He enjoyed a long string of hits from the mid-60s through the mid-70s, though his fans have remained steadfast through his many years of touring. In the late 60s and early 70s he had his own US TV show, singing right into our living rooms. His guests were usually other singers and musicians and they'd perform together, live in front of the studio audience. His duet with Janis Joplin has to be seen to be believed.
The song was co-written by Lonnie Donegan, who is famous in the UK for being the godfather of British Rock 'n' Roll. Beginning in the late 50s, Donegan brought forth a music the UK fans called Skiffle, although it was just older American Folk re-presented in Donegan's style. He became a massive star as he and the music inspired millions of British kids to learn to play guitars and form their own Skiffle bands. The majority of the great British Invasion bands of the mid-60s got their start as Skiffle outfits, including The Beatles, The Searchers, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and so many others who would go on to major fame and influence over the next few decades.
In turn, these bands influenced US Folk groups into adopting this new sound and another new sound was born in the huge Folk Rock movement begun by The Byrds and The Turtles, who got their initial hits by playing Bob Dylan's Folk songs in a Rock style. This inspired Dylan to jump into the market and become one of the greatest songwriters of all time. In turn, it was Dylan's lyrics that inspired The Beatles to write songs with more meaningful lyrics which, in turn, made all other acts begin to write with content in mind. The result was the 1960s became, and remains, the greatest time for rapid changes in music and a huge growth in songwriting maturity.
Without Lonnie Donegan, music as we know it would probably never have existed.

There's a song he wrote recently called "I Won't Crumble With You If You Fall". It was written for his wife who was dying of cancer. It was a song saying I will be here with you and I will stand with you and give you strength and won't fall apart, you can rely on me until the end. I would strongly recommend listening to it. The version live at o2 Shepherd's Bush Empire is particularly beautiful

An extraordinary career that included No.1 hits, spots in Las Vegas and his own US TV show, the voice of the valleys is now a certifiable British 'living legend'. He fell foul of changes in pop culture from time to time, but with a voice like that you almost don't need to work in the end. People come to you!

Tom Jones has on of the most powerful voices I can think of. He really belts those notes, which is impressive to me. No need for falsetto on the higher ones he sang, either.

      No need?
Some songs call for it. This song does not.
Tom's power is on display here. But his voice lacked diversity. He had amazing vocal power, but a "one trick monkey" voice.

I saw Sir Tom live back in May. He was as good as he's ever been. One of the best shows I've ever been to. It was heartwarming to see all of the older people attending that probably listened to him way back in the day, getting up in the aisles and dancing. And yes, one woman threw her panties on stage. lol

I guarantee you will be blown away. Try reacting to his live version of See The Light. ❤ from Canada 🇨🇦. He has been spoken in the same breath as SRV. Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Tom Jones, being Welsh could sing a note and hold it without quivering because the Welsh have music in their blood. Even today, they have wonderful men's choirs. For some reason, the Welsh have always been great performers, both in music and in film....maybe it's because they've always had a more relaxed outlook on life despite the hardships they endured under the English.
As a boy TJ sang in church which explains a lot. Check out the great vocalists in the American band Foxes & Fossils. They practically were brought up in church choirs.
The Welsh have a beautiful accent which is important to anyone who is interested in languages and he Welsh language itself is a mystery to me.
