      @@gokuafrica And yet if we had to value productivity, output and what they actually contribute through their actions, the work they put in no one person is worth more than a few million dollars a year, yet tons of CEOs of big companies make dozens to hundreds of millions. Until the 1980s CEOs, COOs and other executives earned 3-6x times more than the most core essential worker of the company(be it an engineering company, marketing company, manufacturing company, etc, etc), which is fair. Nowadays CEOs earn 25-350x times more than the senior essential core workers of the company.
      We really need a new economic system, but oh well.
      On top of that in public companies, the CEOs weren't there when the company was founded either... the CEOs in those companies are put in there by a board of directors and executives.

      As my pops always said minimum wage, minimum effort.
      I'd expect more for the extra responsibility than the utmost basics considered, a requirement for higher than minimum wage.
      E. G having to lock up at night, checking all security measures in addition to your daily work, should be paid more than a extra 10p a hour. At least the going rate you would pay a different person for that job. So a extra £200 a week or £40 a night at a minimum.
      Any boss that doesn't pay for the extra responsibilities, so far I've just moved jobs because that's just taking advantage of poorly informed employees.

People who are content in their jobs are happy to get on with it. It's people working at bad companies who will invariably make the most noise.
      If people like Josh made a lot of videos about good companies only:
      a) Hardly anyone would watch them
      b) Josh or whoever made the videos would be accused of being fake/shill/corporate sellout.
      People need to vent about their negative experiences in tech companies like these because as Josh points out, they cannot do it in the company themselves without being at best ignored, or at worst, fired.

    @Joshua Fluke I landed a senior dev role at 30% above the market salary for the country I live in, WITH JUST ONE YEAR OF DEV EXPERIENCE in another company. I have been tinkering with programming for a long while, but didn't have corporate experience. You encouraged me to be less honest 😀 I've been here for a year and promoted to a team lead as well.
    But the company I joined is very unlike the companies you keep criticizing. You showed all the red flags to me, so I flagged companies that did any of the cringe things you mention and avoided them.
    The only thing this company does, that you've so far criticized, is being secretive about salaries. Other than that, I cannot complain :D
    Oh, and your setting is now too bright for my light sensitivity. I turned the brightness down all the way, but it looks kind of bad.

    • @georgiosdoumas2446
      @georgiosdoumas2446 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you know that the average salary for Senior developers is 30% less than what you get now? And also out of curiosity : did you "extended" your experience in the 1st company (saying it was more months that it actually was, or saying that you started as junior but in 6 months you were promoted, just to sound more impressive ) ? Or you were afraid to be dishonest about it (since it could be easily checked) and just said in the interview that you have worked in personal projects for many years (but then again , I suppose they would like you to show them, so what did you have to show?) . Also I suppose they put you thorugh a programming interview, so you must have done well in that technical interview.

    • @someoneelse5005
      @someoneelse5005 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@georgiosdoumas2446 Statistical data that's publicly available. Also, if you ask around, you will find what the averages are, those things are not exactly secret. The reason I got a higher salary was that they were in a dire need of my skill set (or what they imagined it to be based on the interview), not because they love me, though.
      So, I used the personal project + freelance gambit basically. The interview was fairly simple, but I have thoroughly prepared for it, and I seem to be able to manipulate people into believing I know things that I just know I can easily check and learn. So, this did have a high learning curve and I did have to learn a lot off work, but in the end, I actually achieved the level I had initially proposed. Since I was learning things fresh and actively improving, and I know how to deal with people, I was granted a team lead promotion.
      Every waking day I think about how it is incredible nobody has caught up to me, but the reality is, the work I do actually is high quality, and we do manage to output things on time. Since this is an outsourcing company, we have clients, and those are extremely happy with my team, and me in particular.
      I guess this would be a grand example of fake it till you make it, but it is probably mandatory to have tech-based interests and be a tinkerer in general, have good people skills or at least be likeable, and really push yourself into learning. I didn't think I was a particularly likeable person because people mostly hated me, and even bullied me in high school, but I was always doing my own things and learning about programming and making anything that comes up in my interests. I just didn't work with clients or get out much, but people seem to genuinely like me now, it is really weird, and I feel really weird and bad about how I am lying to all these kind people, but my results aren't.
      There are people who have been working for 5+ years at this company who now have worse skills than I do, just because they didn't push themselves (and the project they work/ed on was really stale). It is super, super weird.

    • @someoneelse5005
      @someoneelse5005 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      So my timeline goes like this:
      Started programming at 15 but didn't really do anything major, didn't work for company, didn't mess with any CMS or framework, nor front end, nly did mods for games, but I did a lot of coding, yet my learning was super slow because I was in a niche, and for the longest time I didn't even have the most basic grasp of data types or how anything works.
      Enrolled uni at 19 and never finished, but got some professional toolset information from it.
      Got my junior position at 23 and invested into learning all this web stuff
      Got my senior position at 24 and continued learning web stuff and started being proactive with clients
      Got my team lead position at 25 and now investing into learning management as well as architecture, presales etc

    • @someoneelse5005
      @someoneelse5005 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Also I am super paranoid someone from the company could read this and while I know that's statistically unlikely, it scares the ever living shit out of me. I had to get this off my chest somehow and have been meaning to for the longest time, but this is a bizarre feeling. I always feel the client isn't demanding enough, and my reviews are amazing because of that, so if we move to an actually demanding client, my shortcomings will become apparent.

    Comparing what that CEO spends on flying to the average wage he pays is one of the best things you’ve done with your ability to reach a lot of people. Also not a socialist, but the pay of the top people vs everyone else is incredible and apparently much greater in the US compared to a lot of other places.

      Socialism, in simple terms, is ownership of the means of production. Bailouts and Welfare are not Socialist. Welfare is a Social Liberal idea adopted by countries which had a sufficiently developed economy to do so. Bailouts are a practice stemming from the oligopolistic and nepotistic nature of modern Neoliberal economies.
