"They treated leaving as a sign of betrayal." Wow. Many years ago I worked for a restaurant chain. They had dozens of locations, as well as hotels and other real estate interests. Not a billion dollar company, but definitely successful, and I was about to go into their management training course before I changed my mind and left. On my last day, the owner came in, and I told him that I was leaving to pursue my career doing what I really wanted to do. His response? "Good. You're better than this place."

I quit my first job at a coffee shop to focus on another part-time job I preferred. I was one of the best employees (a little older than most) and this was not a well-run location. The manager I liked had left for better things as well. The owner turned absolutely nasty instantly the moment I gave my notice.
He did me a favour, though, because I can now instantly recognise the exactly kind of nasty-disguised-by-oily of this type of man.

Jesus, you can’t have a side hustle and you can’t say you’re looking for work when you literally need a job to survive in this world lol. This right here is why CEOS often don’t get a lot of respect from me. They are so toxic to their employees that literally make THEM money! Let’s keep it real, there is no company without the hard work of the employees, period. On top of that, how disgusting of a person do you have to be to write how “unprofessional” a former employees post was and possibly get him blacklisted from getting another job. That is just pure evil. Because let’s face it, it doesn’t matter what the employee would of said if your old boss says stuff like that about you then that can have a huge impact on your ability to get rehired somewhere else. This is straight up unethical retaliation!

If my kids play soccer, maybe I want to be more involved and be the coach or referee.... maybe I enjoy making Etsy crafts on the weekend.... maybe I enjoy writing books.... those are passions the CEO can't replace. They could maybe replace an Uber driver or a waitress, as those are mostly for the money. CEOs don't get that people have more passions than their 40hr a week job.

@@CitizenValve You should read about the history of capitalism. It started as a way to seek benefit to the people. Over time a few influential people morphed it into what it is today, a way to benefit the few.
A part of the original concept is that profit is an important part of creating a better ecosystem for everyone. As profit allows for evolution and improvement. What they didn't think about was how people would abuse the system. It's a shame really.
Point is that profit itself isn't the bad part. It's the mentality that's been created and promoted. By the kind of people like Joshua here for example, who believe a company's only purpose is to make profit and not to benefit the people.

I feel that the more the executives boast, celebrate and pretend that everything is great and everyone loves to work there; the worse the company is, both in culture and morals.
IMO it's typically the companies where the executives are able to leave subordinates the fuck alone to their work and whatever they like to do in their free time, that's the better places to be. And they're usually better off economically too, because happy employees are productive employees.

Some people legitimately prefer it this way, they view it as their family and all that, they don't view work the way you do. There's a deep disconnect there between people who view themselves as their own company and are merely lending their talent and time to someone else and individuals who'd much rather just be part a company and be largely defined by that, treating it as family, excited for the company events, drinking all kinds of cool-aid willingly and eagerly.
There are people who are just wired that way and really look at this kind of thing and want all that, there's others who are just put off by it

My old boss was one of those "smelly nerds". He was not likeable, but he was a good boss. He cared about projects and actual work getting done. He would take work off our PM backs. He also created competitions with actual cash prizes (tax free) of up to a monthly salary. So if you actually worked a little harder you could easily earn 14-15 monthly salaries per year. The pay was not bad to begin with.
His only drawback was that he was a little paranoid about cybersecurity. On one famous occassion he asked us engineers if we could find a way to encrypt USB connections on local printers.
All in all not a bad boss.

Our entire IT dept had to wear a company shirt that said "Team FAG" on Fridays.
The CEO came up with the "Fourth and Goal" team concept as a way to unite and smash deadlines. He was older but not so old he couldn't get away with not realzing what he was doing. When it was brought up in a town hall meeting, he dismissed it as us being juvenile. Thankfully this was in Vegas in mid-2000s where dev jobs were plenty.

I began investing in stocks and Def earlier this year, and it is the best choice I've ever made. My portfolio is rounding up to almost a million and I have realized that when a stock makes it to the news, chances are you're quite late to the party, the idea is to get in early on blue chips before it becomes public. There are lots of life changing opportunities in the market, and maximize it.
