I remember this on news channels and interviews. The microphones were sensitive back then so it produced a slight hum.

I've been hearing this all my life. There also used to be a sound when you first turned the TV on or off, but no one else could hear it and no one believed me.

Old CRT TVs and displays used a high voltage transformer in them called a flyback transformer that would commonly emit a whine when turned on, or if the coils got loose, but the whine is at a high enough frequency that only younger people can actually hear it, so that could be what that was
@@Nika-cp9np I am sure of it! I think I can still hear those kinds of sounds - my hearing is hypersensitive.
@@pizzadudelol I'm 68, but I have always had hearing like a dog. I had a hearing test a few years ago because I had an infection, and was supposed to raise my hand as the little percussive sounds got softer and softer. The last one made the doc jump - it's the one no one can hear! I come from a family of musicians, maybe that's it. But it can be distressing as well. When I am under a lot of stress, sound becomes unbearably loud. Traffic noises are such that walking beside a road is worse than uncomfortable. I had to spend one plane ride with my fingers jammed in my ears, and was still in pain when we landed. I swear I can hear my watch ticking all the way across the room when I have insomnia.
