Grim Dawn is one of my favorite games and all thanks to Ziggy's first videos on this game. Back then all we had was Act 1 and beta. Now it has so much content and it has great updates.

Targo the builder is one that I'm using with my retaliation Oathkeeper. Attacks proc the Shield Wall ability (150% shield block and lots of Physical Retaliation). I'm working my way toward the Obelisk of Menhir (which has Stone Form (15% chance proc on shield block) providing damage absorption, reduction in bleeding and poison duration, and a massive bonus to retaliation damage.
I only recently discovered Grim Dawn and I am using this retaliation guide as I really enjoy damage reflection tanks. Thank you for this video guide. It has been a lot of fun so far!
If you find the enemy infrequent green belt that converts acid dmg to phys dmg, the Perdition set is actually the most powerful phys retaliation set aside from the Stoneguard legendary set.
Hey ZiggyD. Do you have a step by step build guide for this? I would like to know where to distribute my Soldier/Oathkeeper and Devotion points as I level.
I mean, most people don't put points into anything other than physique so I don't think you'll ever regret that promise. In terms of actual build advice, you can get a lot of resists from all armor augments which you can buy once you reach revered with a faction so try and get all those side quests done for the rep. This can really help free up your components and gear.
@@RyuLightorb The amount of damage that you get from cunning/spirit is often too small to be worth investing level up points in. Those stats still situationally matter for gearing, but that's usually covered by mastery bar and devotions so even then you're not going to need to spend more than a few level points into those stats.
The Vire stone matron tree is really good for this kind of build. I’m using it on my oppressor (oath/necro) and the granted skill feels similar to an autobomber. Plus the fists proccing everywhere looks awesome
I went Shieldbreaker for this, because Ulzuin's Wrath feels so satisfying. I'm pushing past 9.5k hp at level 52, and can literally face-tank most bosses, standing in all types of damage for prolonged amounts of time w/o using tonics. Avg gear level is 40, and it's the first hardcore character I've played to that level, since I almost exclusively have played softcore. The warlord build gets tankier, but it looks like you went for more damage, which is also fine. Although, being able to just face-tank the most dangerous content really lets your retaliation happen more often. It's also arguably quite boring at times. :P EDIT: I will add that I am scaling The Volcanic Stride bonus to Vire's Might, because it's a juicy addition to my damage. One point in the Tectonic Shift for the increased range also makes clearing faster. If you can get cooldown reduction on a nice shield or caster offhand, you are also clearing faster, bc of using vire's more often. If there's any build that benefits from weapon set swapping for this, it's a retaliation build using movement skills. Although, the new FG movement skills really help out, too.

I cleared malmouth, then I walked in some aetherfire and died, bc I wasn't paying attention. I will probably just stop playing HC since I have such a bad track record for that kind of thing. :P You'll notice a lot of suboptimal points, that because I experimented a bit, and kept forgetting to unallocate certain ones, like smite. Honestly, I feel like my best retaliation build has still got to be a sorcerer, using olexra's flash freeze to lower fire resistance by a huge amount, then converting everything I could to fire, and getting tons of retaliation damage and scaling vindictive flames. Meanwhile spamming conflagration, because you're in arcanist and can afford to as a result.
6:50 I should note, because later on you say different types of resistance shred stacks: This keynode with "-8% physical resistance" acts just like any "+X% resistance" thing that you can find on any of your armor pieces, except it just lowers it. Think of it as an additional piece of armor that you force others near it to wear. The only true reduction effects are the ones with the word "reduction" written in its description. Only two types of reductions stack with each other, and that's flat and percentage. The "-X%" stacks with the other reductions as well as with itself only because that's how resistances of that kind are handled.
"Southpaws will understand." Even Grim Dawn is recognizing some of the old builds and memes of POE, as well as recognizing Grim Dawn does have explicit stat sticks in it (and even balanced around it to some degree). I love this meta, 4th wall breaking, jest, good work by Crate Entertainment for sure.
@@TartarusPyro Southpaw Reave, and better yet, the "Totally Normal Shield" in Grim Dawn is even a one-handed Mace. I don't think they could have been any more direct about the Southpaw reference for sure, though I think only Reave was the one that was a meme build (since otherwise it was always pretty bad outside of southpaw for most of poe's lifespan).
Seeing him approach Loghorrean on 19% chaos resist brings back memories to my Chaos AAR Warlock with 24% bleed resist vs groble warriors before their bleed strike was nerfed. Learning/adapting will be required...
Not all games have to be fast paced, not all games must be so in depth convoluted with builds, not all games have to be for everyone. I love Grim Dawn as niche and I have abandoned Path of Exile after 3000 hours spent in it for Grim Dawn and Warframe. No regrets.
Grim Dawn is in-depth with builds, tho...Also, ironically, you're saying this now after they just released an expansion which added - and marketed the addition of - a bunch of new fast movement skills.
I remember the time on twitch when FG was just at the beginning and people are memeing about it saying "there will be a new class and it's gonna dual wield a shield? Poggers!" It actually happened.

I have been doing Retaliation builds on ARPGs since I started playing them. I always name the characters some variation of Cactuar and I have always called these builds the P.R.I.C.K. build. Powerful Retaliation Is Cool Killing. My 3rd character when Grim Dawn was 1st playable was a P.R.I.C.K.

Because physique increase your devensive ability, so u are less hit by enemys, which counteracts thorns a little bit. You could grab Assassins mark devotion for even more physical res shred If u max out your cunning attribute. greetings :D
So far with nearly 100% investment into physique it's not brought enemy chance to hit down low enough to be a problem. I just don't bother seeking out any additional DA scaling. You could go some cunning if you wanted to do more of the work with say Righteous Fervor but it hasn't seemed necessary yet.
I like the new adding retaliation damage to attack skills. It is painfully slow to play retaliation builds since you only take damage per hit, and ranged enemies don't take retaliation damage. Bosses hit too slowly to proc retaliation often enough for good dps.

The entire fight with Callagadra (who has just over 25 MILLION HP) he completely face-tanked through all the pets that get summoned. my Phy Retal build I spent about half the fight kiting while only able to facetank for about 6-8 seconds when all procs and devotions went off at the same time.
And now there's an entire class with that as one of it's facets and 3 new sets (or 2 if you don't want to count mythical perdition) all for acid retal. It's actually pretty crazy how much support they gave to this one very specific build.

@@cruelcumber5317 It helps to sell the game to people. PoE was heavily marketed as a game that allowed all sorts of weird builds, and Grim Dawn is no different. You can't do this kind of build in PoE, but you can in Grim Dawn. The ability to make unusual builds is a great selling point for some people and retaliation fits quite well with that.
It hurts my Grim Dawn soul that you think this is a Meme D: Retaliation Builds are a staple in Grim Dawn since Early Access with the Demolitionist and its Blast Barrier D: Never the fastest Build but one of the most reliable in terms of Clearing the Game, Endgame and Super Bosses deathless :P
The real meme would be doing a proper southpaw build where you get access to dual wielding, use the Totally Normal Shield in your main hand and some other weapon in your off hand. Sure it'd be a garbage build (at least until they add a shield that looks like a mace, please Crate I'm begging you) and it'd be better just to transmog and get the same visuals, but where's the fun in that?
Is this game worth getting into? I love Path of Exile, but I don't know much about Grim Dawn. Is there enough endgame content to keep you interested for a while?
There's a couple of endless style modes and "roguelike" dungeons that close if you die or log out. There's also a few super bosses that you have to be geared extremely well for, so there's endgame stuff to shoot for. The main differences between this and POE are 1. Building tanky is rewarding as ziggy said. Damage that comes your way is fair and nothing is going to oneshot a super tanky character like in POE 2. Grim Dawn if focused on what it wants to do and doesn't have a shitload of aimless bloat 3. Drop rates are rare enough to be excited when you see something you want, but common enough that you never feel like you can get anything good without trading I've played a lot of both and if you've become at all disillusioned with the power creep and content bloat POE has you should try grimdawn, its a really fun game
The game doesn't have an extensive endgame, but I'd say that's more than countered out by how much more focus there is on making the leveling phase a lot more interesting.
Game is super worth, easy hundred of hours playing different builds and a good amount of endgame now. Roguelike dungeons, bosses and zones that are endgame, Rift system and Crucible wave defense.
Nobody gives af about nerfs in this game. Balancing will be done for the sake of fun and not for the sake of "seing their views on what should be meta" through.
Hi Ziggy, can you confirm something for me? I notice that, even though I have a skill like "Reprisal" which has "Burn Damage", the character sheet shows Burn Damage as 0, no matter if i look on direct damage, magical, or retaliation... always shows 0 (yet it does show the percent enhancement). Is this because Burn damge on my character, is IN FACT 0, until Reprisal Procs? If yes, if this is the reason, then I say "boooo......" the stat sheet should reflect collective damages, whether they require proc or not (the sheet should indicate this in some way)... I look at the sheet, and nearly everything is 0000, yet, in the background, I'm doing all sorts of damage... can you confirm this is the reason i see 0 Burn damage... and what do you think of (what I view as ) a char sheet deficiency.... ?
Grim Internals is downloaded separately. Grim Internals, it's an executable that you run instead of grim dawn. also allows many other things such as the damage values on the left side of the screen, auto component pickup and much more
ok so im a POE player right ive played for years got over 3500 hours on record 2 of my poe friends bought diablo 3 recently cos they heard the cut scenes are crazy i thought why not see whats the hypes about honestly i am playing it non stop right now there are so many things that they do better than poe and so many things poe do better than diablo but the story line and cut scenes are the best ive seen enjoying my time playing and making builds this is my new go to game
I've tried so hard to like this game. It just feels so much more clunky than PoE. But this build looks fun. Dual shields is hilarious and I do love me some good tankiness and auras. I suppose I'll give it another try. I really want to love it.

I have an immortal retaliation damage build named Ozruk that I played in multiplayer and I shouted that at my friends all the time.
Grim Dawn: able to equip 2 shields.
Path of Exile: equip wand with shield, cant shield charge.
Not like there aren't any other movement skills. Either way, there is no dual shield but cosmetics in GD.

Yeah, you can take Wolverine and Autumn boar for 1 purple point, down right, for more retaliation % and an other proc on block

This type of build is extremely my shit, I love RPGs that let you attack with shields! Also amen to dying to a series of hits instead of one-shots.

Grim Internals is downloaded separately.
Grim Internals, it's an executable that you run instead of grim dawn. also allows many other things such as the damage values on the left side of the screen, auto component pickup and much more

I got grim dawn ashes of malmouth, do i need to download an entire game for forgotten gods or just a patcher?
Forgotten Gods is the second expansion, if you have the base game and Ashes then you'll need to pick up FG as well if you want it!

ok so im a POE player right ive played for years got over 3500 hours on record 2 of my poe friends bought diablo 3 recently cos they heard the cut scenes are crazy i thought why not see whats the hypes about honestly i am playing it non stop right now there are so many things that they do better than poe and so many things poe do better than diablo but the story line and cut scenes are the best ive seen enjoying my time playing and making builds this is my new go to game

I've tried so hard to like this game. It just feels so much more clunky than PoE. But this build looks fun. Dual shields is hilarious and I do love me some good tankiness and auras. I suppose I'll give it another try. I really want to love it.
