    It's not often a film takes a moment to just show something beautiful... usually studios just assume every movie-goer has ADHD and needs fast-paced cuts and explosions every few minutes to keep people entertained. This was absolutely fucking beautiful and one of the most unforgettable Sci-Fi movies in the past 2 Decades.

    Harvey's character is one of melancholy when it comes to the mission. It was not developed outwardly in the movie, but his number one concern was losing his life. Mercury was, to Harvey, a reminder of the distance he was from earth.

    It’s amazing all of the characters react differently - Cappa has a small smile on his face, Mace looks ahead with no resolve, the second in command looks down almost as if he can’t bear to look. This film and in particular, this music, always makes me feel sad for some reason. Dunno why

    • @powerboatguy2308
      @powerboatguy2308 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, I think the movie did a good job of cobbling together different characters who may have different personalities, chemistry issues, but all had the same goal of saving humanity. The scene at the end was cool with the nuclear explosion meeting the sun, man really making his next evolutionary step.

    • @alexayers9463

      They're seeing something literally awesome, most of all from a perspective no one else in their universe (apart from maybe their predecessors in the first mission) has ever seen. Given that their mission could very well be a doomed one, to one extent or another, they're probably dwelling on the fact that the beauty of what they're witnessing is likely costing them their lives---and it's totally worth it; they're likely flying to their incineration, but they're at peace with it, not only cus success would make the ultimate difference for their world, but also cus, unlike a lot of people who die without ever witnessing something worth living for, this crew no longer has to worry about that. Hence your "sadness"; there's a lot to be "sad" about here.

    • @MrZoran84
      @MrZoran84 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Because its a suicide mission that has a high likelihood of failure. Evidently some of the crew havent made peace with that.

    Years later I notice that Mercury is spinning backwards in this scene. Most objects in our solar system orbit the sun and/or rotate counterclockwise as seen from the ecliptic north pole (even the sun itself), Mercury is no exception. So we should see it passing in front of the sun from left to right instead of right to left. I first thought that Icarus II was "upside-down" but when you look at the sun, you can clearly see its surface rotating from left to right, though at a slower pace.

    Honestly, I think this scene really captures the life giving divinity of The Sun. Sure, Mercury (and by association, Earth) are small and insignificant in comparison to the Majesty of our Sun, yet still, the star cradles us in its orbit, grants the heat and light we need to go on living. To some, this scene represents a nihilistic portrait of the Solar System, how even as Humanity dies, Mercury continues to spin, but to me, this scene represents something completely different. This is an image of a Mother holding one of her seven children

      While it's awe-inspiring to see Mercury in person, seeing another lifeless planet also makes you appreciate the fertility of Earth itself. Our odds of living on a life-sustaining planet are astronomical, no pun intended.

    This scene is so wonderful in its simplicity. There is no Sci Fi Action or drama or other played out plot device in this scene. @Sigurjon96 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you think Sunshine turned into "a horror movie" you weren't paying attention. There's a difference between thriller and horror. It's sci-fi all the way through and then thriller is added as well to the second half of it. That's what makes the film so good it doesn't have a dull moment in it it's very suspenseful because the odds aren't high for success. Event Horizon is a joke compared to this.

    Theres so much to unpack in this scene. However, to me, the most beautiful thought, is that Mercury, this tiny rock, is actually out there right now, circling our star, and has done for longer than humanities entire existence. It just creates this awesome depiction of the greatness of space, time and nature.
    The music and the visuals somehow do a fantastic job of reinforcing that message in this scene.

    A group of scientists are sent into space to "jump-start" our dying sun with a payload of nuclear warheads. This is the second crew to attempt this feet (hence the name of the ship 'Icarus 2'). The first crew was lost and never heard from again. There is a highly-emotional soundtrack that carries you, as a minor miscalculation jeopardizes Icarus 2 and its crew. If it sounds like a Michael Bay film, I assure you IT'S NOT!!! It's one of the most visually stunning films I've ever scene.

    Really admire and appreciate this scene. But for anyone who is curious you would not see this unless you used a telescope from probably around Venus. From this distance the sun would only be about three times wide and Mercury is more likely to eclipse it than transit it. Just for people who are curious. I'm a space artist and I don't want to take away from this shots beautiful.

    I watched the transit of Venus across the Sun back in 2004 (using a proper Solar filter) and it still makes one of the fondest memories in my life! This scene is just brilliant, amazing, amazing...

    Heh, always kinda bugs me because at that distance you wouldn't see Mercury moving that fast; you really wouldn't see it move at all in just those few seconds. But it gets the message across for film, so it's cool anyway.

      Yeah..a huge technical fuck up....they gave it an orbital period(Mercury year) of what appears visually to be a several minutes..when in reality..at 88 days, you wouldn't see it visually move at all at that distance
