    Such an underrated movie, this scene delivery is so simple yet horrifying when Icarus says “unknown”, that makes your imagination run to the worst things imaginable

      No I still shit bricks. The tension they create by having all these strictly controlled variables and calculations only makes it better when they introduce these “unknowns” or things they didn’t account for. Just like the scene where dude realizes he miscalculated and destroyed some of the mirror-plating.

    I love how dumb the computer is in this movie. It doesn't think to mention there is an extra crew member on board and seems totally unbothered that the oxygen garden is on fire. It doesn't even notice that trey miscalculated the angle of the shield. The computer being so useless really adds to the feeling of isolation that the crew feels.

    • @William_Sk
      @William_Sk ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I wouldn't call it dumb, just limited. Icarus tries to warn them about several risks and perils throughout but they always wave her warnings away because they are consciously steering off course, telling Icarus to turn off alarms, sensors and such.
      But yeah, I'd call Icarus II limited in it's power to help the crew, outside of the main mission parameters, deliver the payload.

    • @Mark-lj1dj
      @Mark-lj1dj ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@William_Sk I'd certainly call it unintelligent. Why does it exist on the mission if not to help? It contributes nothing. One of the crew even freezes to death trying to save the 'mainframe' as if its worth anything

    • @m1lst3r
      @m1lst3r ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Mark-lj1djt actually serves its purpose. Definitely not unintelligent. It was no different than other computers you see in movies (except HAL9000). Remember that machine are programmed in certain way they always come as pragmatically limited and emotionally subpar.
      And I wouldn't call it brought more isolation to the crew. They've been trained for this for months and if your companion you can always rely to is a piece of machinery then you really are isolated.

    • @brostoevsky8481
      @brostoevsky8481 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      they literally manually override the shield calculations from the computer, thats the source of the problem (the asian guy fucked up). i agree computers are dumb but watch it again

    • @Mark-lj1dj
      @Mark-lj1dj ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@brostoevsky8481 they deviate from the original course. They forget to adjust the shield and this causes shield damage. The computer did not notice the mistake. They then adjust the angle of the ship to put the damaged area into shade so it can be repaired. Sunlight hits a revolving antenna causing the oxygen garden to catch fire. The computer doesn't bother to inform the crew that there is a fire it simply tries to adjust the ship to its original orientation. This marks the only time the crew attempt to override the computer because the new angle will incinerate their colleagues outside. Eventually they don't override the computer because the ship, oxygen garden and payload are more important than their colleagues. So at no point do they actually override the computer. I suggest that you watch it again.

    I'm writing a story called Sunshine 2 Flight of the Icarus 3.
    Original opening:
    "Our Sun is dying. Mankind faces extinction. 7 years ago, the Icarus project sent a mission to restart the Sun, but that mission was lost before it reached the star. 16 months ago, I, Robert Capa, and a crew of 7 left earth frozen in a solar winter. Our payload: a stellar bomb with a mass equivalent to Manhattan Island. Our purpose: to create a star within a star.
    8 astronauts strapped to the back of a bomb. My bomb. Welcome to Icarus 2."
    My story opening:
    “Our Sun has been revived. Mankind has been saved. 2 years ago, the Icarus 2 successfully delivered its stellar bomb payload, even though the delivery cost the ship itself and the entire crew. 14 months ago, I, Julius Grande, and another crew of 7 left Earth now thawed from a solar winter. Our mission: study the Sun up close and land the first group of humans on Mercury.
    8 astronauts strapped to the back of an artificial bomb. My artificial bomb. Welcome to Icarus 3.”
