A comment below states that Mercury is "going the wrong way". Well... That depends on how you turn your spaceship. It might be "upside down", out there in space... Where "up" and "down" have little meaning. One could even say hey are looking down towiards the surface of the sun - which would be the most logical way to see things really. Have fun.

The diameter of the Sun is 1,391,000 km compared to Mercury's 4,879 km; Mercury has a diameter of about 0.35% compared to the Sun, although without boring people with maths the apparent size would vary depending on distance. Its not easy to calculate their angular diameter without knowing the distance from which Icarus II was observing. Watch the "2006 Transit of Mercury" video. Crazy stuff.

There’s a chunk to complain about: the wonky and absurd science, the plot holes, and the fact the entire third act degrades into a slasher movie. I can’t find myself hating this movie though. It was approaching Mercury from left to right which makes the planet appear to move right to left from the observer's point of view when viewed against a distant background object such as the sun. Perspective and parallax are wonderful things!

I'm pretty sure the two planets nearer to the sun than earth move from left to right from our perspective...something to think about if anyone else is considering a transit scene in his or her movie

Mercury is anywhere from 46 to 70 million km from the sun depending on time of year (Mercury years that is). That ought to put some scale on how huge the sun is, and the sun is thought to be smaller than most stars in our galaxy. Makes one feel quite... small.

Love this scene... But nobodies going to mention how Big the sun is here compared to Mercury's orbit.... Its like the sun is a red giant 44 times its original radi

The sun shouldn't be that big in real life it would be alot smaller their ship is still about 40 million miles away at that point.
