Stuff like this is so scary. I think it also helps them that doctors are in a position of trust and power so they may not be questioned as much as people of many other professions
@@Bettersucksaul Very true, especially with computers linking people's credentials and information and making it easier to look back on. But don't forget, she was working as a doctor until 2017 and many places and companies around the world are still working to close loopholes like the ones she used. It's harder to do now, but it's possible to have done what she did years ago and still be practising, especially depending on which country you're in and what systems are in place

every time i hear about a case like this, i think there’s no way more people get away with pretending to be a DOCTOR of all things. but then yet another story comes out. it’s horrifying
What's more frightening is the fact that your own doctor or dentist etc may also be a fake unqualified imposter! 😮 They just haven't been found out...YET!
She's not the first fake doctor and unfortunately won't be the last because hospitals etc don't do their due diligence when they hire these people. Also, every time there's a problem with a doctor, instead of taking the proper legal measures, that hospital gives them a glowing review to get rid of them and so they end up doing more damage at another hospital or clinic or wherever.
Its so effing annoying because here I am busting my a** off to earn my physician assistant degree and certification (just graduated) and my first job is having me fill out SO much paperwork and stuff to make sure I’m legit. 🥲
They operate the same way the Catholic church and ALL religious institutions deal with their rap*st and paedophile religious leaders, they just move them to another temple, mosque and church. They all love to see and hear the suffering of innocent souls. They feed off the pain and misery of other humans. That's what I have concluded. Amongst us are people who are not real 100% humans. No full human can support and do such behaviour. We are not alone.
Shows how much leeway and how little accountability doctors really have. I had a doctor so horrible, I started to honestly think she might be an impostor, after we had reports of our first fake doc in Finland. I couldn’t get help for depression, knee pain and insanely painful infection in my back muscle. The only time she helped, she made me jump thru hoops of her choice, for sinus infection. I know other young people who got very similar, dismissive ‘care’ from her, older patients she actually cared for. People had complained about her several times, but she stuck around like gum in hair. Id say she was just as professional too. Her knowledge of things like depression was highly sus. She refused to give me meds, she told me to go walk outside, since “spring is here and the sun is bright”, like Im a plant, little water and sun is all I need. Second time she gave me prescription to meds that were discontinued.. Ive been on antidepressant nearly 15 years now and never felt better. I just hate the fact that I could’ve felt like normal human being over a decade sooner.. When she ‘diagnosed’ my swollen, handball sized knee, it was just “loose joints”, like walk it off. I later learned I definitely don’t have loose joints and it was torn patella, I had help and it hasn’t bothered since. With my back she accused me of seeking drugs, while I couldn’t even stand straight. I had to walk around more or less like an L-shape, or crawl on all fours at home. And that was the first time I met her! Last time I saw her, she sorta attacked my person for no reason, even the nurse assisting her was wide-eyed, I left in tears. It was meant to be gyno appointment, but took a weird turn into crazy-town. I talked about the incident with another doctor, who was outraged. He made one call and she was soon sent packing. I dont know how many people suffered needlessly, but I personally know handful of them. One girl lost part of her uterus and nearly died. Im not going to see a doctor unless it’s absolutely not avoidable, when it’s limb or life. All because of her. And I now know she really is a doctor, I later met a lady who was in med school with her. *Seriously scary and upsetting…*
Ooooh, I might have met her! It was this elderly Finnish lady (OK, she might have been 55- 60; it was a few years ago) who had zero knowledge and was insanele dismissive. She had never heard of my illness and since she had no clue what it was I obviously didn't need any care for it. But if I insisted I should eat yoghurt for two days and I'd be fine. I urged her to check up online and take a look at how to treat the illness as it WILL develop into sepsis if not treated in time, but she refused. If she hadn't heard of it clearly didn't exist, and if I died oh well, then I wouldnt need medication anymore, would I? In my case it is a recurring thing - I've just been released from the hospital after round 25 with said illness - so I am not an expert but I surely know how to diagnose said illness with decent accuracy. Didn't matter to this charlatan. She was gone the next time I visited the clinic, thankfully.
@@soulchild2003 No idea; I only met her once when I was running a high fever. Short with short red hair that was very obviously not her natural colour Normally those doctor's visit take two minutes: I pop in, show my horribly infected leg, get a prescription and toodle off to the pharmacy for´my sweet sweet antibiotics but that time it took almost 15 minutes due to her utter ineptness. But no, I do not remmeber her name and I don't think she worked at the clinic for more than a couple of weeks so I doubt that anyone would remember her. Especially as the guy who replaced her was even worse. Oh my. The visit to see him was.... an experience. Lazy, unhinged, rude, misogynistic, fatphobic and just plain batshit crazy.
Honestly same. My country's health system is so fucked, I'm better trying to heal my chronic issues with supplements and prayer than wait for a doctor to be available
@@meganlouise9007 unfortunately Canada. Quebec's system has been on the decline for a while, but since the pandemic it's almost impossible to see a doctor here. Government tried to help with a platform online but instead you're stuck talking to automated voices trying to get an appointment (usually takes weeks) or having to wait 12+ hours at the ER if you're sick. We don't have to pay for our healthcare but the whole process is a nightmare
Im from the uk and just from my personal experience of dealing with the nhs for mental health reasons, most of the doctors dont know what they are talking about in relation to mental illness, I think she was able to get away with these things because of the already existing stigma already around disabilities and mental illnesses
And the pure lack of staff for mental health. Not many professionals enter into the mental health sector overall, it’s extremely hard so the lack of staff willing to work in that area has something to do with it.
I've been asked strange questions by Doctors within Mental Health. I think it's probably easier to fake qualifications within that medical field than any other. They also put words in your mouth. They just have know the names of medication, as they are very quick to prescribe them. I suppose it's not like other doctors as they only know what you tell them as they can't read thoughts. I wonder whether a lot of them are actually trained in anyway.
Yeah I'm from Canada and live in alberta, the province that pays its doctors the least in the country. I've ran through 4 of them, all total idiots since 2019. Ironically 3 out of 4 were immigrants from sketchy places, ghana and nigeria with degrees from very prestigious Universities. The last one I fired had a degree from Oxford, he was from Nigeria, and the reason i fired him was because he had no clue how to help somebody who's main issue is just having had a very traumatic childhood and early adult life. It's still ongoing cause they won't Medicate me for my anxiety, CPTSD or depression and they won't give me therapy either. It's messed up but it's not hard to fake being a doctor when you're an immigrant with no history. You can claim whatever you want on your citizenship application.
We had a great doctor in trauma room who got jailed as an impostor . He was a vet. How shameful because he was excellent surgeon and saved every life he encountered 😢
I work in the psychology field, and the fact that this case did not surprise me in any capacity is sad. I have met so many psychiatrists and medical doctors who were beyond unprofessional, but they're doctors, so they must know what they're doing... Mind you, this is coming from a PhD, and questioning someone's MD is practically career sewerside (yup, avoiding that TH-cam censor) if you can't back up your accusation/claim. That's potentially how she got away with it for 23 years. I guarantee you there were a lot of signs, but people were afraid to say anything.
How she did this is crazy as a medical student, I've seen smart house officers, senior and junior regsters, get their ass handed to them by consultants for not knowing things .so was she that smart or are consultants in the uk more laid back
No, there’s a lack of staff in our mental health sector so I suspect that they don’t want to lose what little staff there is because our mental health section of the nhs is completely shocking.
If I were a betting person I'd say it was because she was 1. Female and 2. Foreign. No consultant wants to risk being accused of sexism or xenophobia. Even at the expense of patient welfare... Pathetic isn't it?
People are too believing in the authorities. Often when they see a uniform they turn blind and naive. We must be more skeptical and ask and prove everything. There are too many narcissists and psychopaths and con man's aut there. We should not make their freaking game easy. Stupidity aneables evil. We must get smarter.
i work with a vulnerable population/many psychiatrists who are actually good at their jobs, but so many of my patients have had bad experiences with mental healthcare or a lot of internalized stigma so it's hard for them to trust ....imagine finally getting to trust a psychiatrist and then they turn out to be taking advantage of you :/ poor patients probably couldn't trust anyone again so i bet their mental health must have suffered even more :/
I am not surprised, not in the slightest. Everywhere where are vulnerable people there are many predators. That's why so many teacher are narcissists or pdf....iles. + When you have some psychological issues, no one will belive you when you raport abuse. Oldest story in this universe. Where is power imbalance, there is often abuse. Some become real doctors to be able to go on a power trip.
I got three things from this story: 1) Phil Coleman is a saint! More people need to speak up, and not just do a job, but pursue something if it smells like a rat. 2) The UK needs to change how they do medicine: what is a PSYCHIATRIST doing treating an epileptic or someone with dementia? Shouldn't they call in the NEUROLOGIST? 3) In the US, like the UK, foreign doctors have to take exams like the USMLE to practice medicine in this country. The UK should NEVER have allowed a policy of some nations--even if they colonized them---being allowed to bypass such proficiency exams. It sets up the precedent for unscrupulous people to use this and defraud the system. Every country should ask itself: Would I allow my OWN native citizens such priveleges? If NOT, when you get screwed--the joke's on YOU.
No one followed through and called her references or checked that she actually graduated from the uni's she vlaimed. It took a vurious JOURNALIST. And only then did the NHS decide to verify foreign doctors!
39:19 What a *_bizarre_* response to someone offering you their camping furniture. Weird! Also seems like she lived bare bones not only to save money but to make it easier to leave if she was ever found out.
Maybe I should find a “fake “ doctor to help me with my pain management since “real” doctors care more about what the government thinks of their prescription writing than they do about theHippocratic Oath these days.
Blame the government, the doctors have to be careful prescribing if they want to keep their license. After a bunch of them got prosecuted for overprescribing it became risky to prescribe a lot of narcotics even if the patient actually needed them to stay comfortable.
@@ANYHOO0 I’m well aware. The government should not prevent decent doctors from caring for their patients due to other negligent physicians. If a doctor is firm in their belief and has done nothing wrong what do they have to be afraid of???
For real. My mom has chronic, long-term, well-documented health problems which cause her constant pain. She's absolutely miserable and it breaks my heart. Originally she resisted her doctor's suggestion to start taking pain meds, but after several years she realized they were probably never going to be able to "fix" whatever health issue that was causing her so much pain, so she started taking the pain meds. Eventually she prescribed fentanyl patches, and she was on the same dosage for years without any problems or signs of misuse. That was until the backlash against oxycontin, "pill mills", and fentanyl (a few years later) started. all of a sudden the doctor told her that he was going to have to start cutting her back, despite it being his idea to put her on that dosage in the first place. It didn't matter that she'd been stable on that dosage for years, or that she'd never once run out of her script early or asked him to up her dosage. Needless to say, she ended up having to deal with opiate withdrawal AND her other health and pain issues at the same time. As of today she's still on the patches, just at a much, much lower dose than before. She feels like crap all the time, she's in horrible pain, plus now she's dependent on opiates and has to make sure she always gets her prescription on time. It's infuriating how they're doing this to legitimate chronic pain patients like it's somehow going to fix the fentanyl problem in this country! Chronic pain patients on fentanyl patches have nothing to do with the fentanyl powder being smuggled into the country - obviously! They're not lacing all of these other drugs with damn fentanyl patches! Argh it's so frustrating, we've got to figure out a way to stop the government from imposing these stupid laws, which only serve to punish people who have nothing to do with the fentanyl crisis in the first place!
Only 7 years?? I for sure thought it would be much more. Great video once again, Petal 💕 You are a great storyteller and the stories you post about are ones I never heard before
One would think that it wouldn't be possible to work as a doctor with zero qualifications, not least be able to go undetected and unchallenged for, decades, as Zholia Alemi did. Even then it was only through the suspicions of a journalist, looking into her background, that uncovered her as a complete fraud, and not from any of her 'colleagues' with doubts about her competency!
It kind of makes you wonder how much active problem solving doctors do today in the NHS. There have been times i've visited and it seems as though they do little more than search symptoms on a database. She had a background in medicine enough to grasp the basics and use this tool i reckon
When you said that she only had to go to jail or prison for 7 years, I had to rewind the video and make sure I heard you right! That's appalling to me that she faked being a doctor for 23 years, in my opinion, indirectly caused a death, and only had to serve 7 years.
I know there are lots of great doctors and medical practitioners in the NHS but honestly I can believe this. I injured my foot when I was in England and it was literally the size of a football. I went to the ER and they did X-rays. When I finally got to the doctor he was looking at the wrong foot. Then when he was looking at the x-rays he was googling “How to read foot X-rays.” He was like yeah it looks really swollen, so here are some crutches. I was in Europe for 3 weeks and I just had to go the whole time on what ended up being a broken foot.
To fake being a psychiatrist is a special kind of evil. With the amount of NHS trusts she worked in as a locum, I wonder how many patients she permanently disabled / killed indirectly due to her lack of knowledge.
Hey petal! Absolutely love the work you put into this video ad always. I have a topic from my country New Zealand that I think might be great to cover it’s called the Cartwright inquiry. Because of this inquiry we now have the Health and Disability Commissioner. Lots of love always! X

My kids both had issues with taking showers because of the sensations. I bought a shower head that was able to be turned off and on. Wasn’t perfect but it helped.
My daughter didn't like the sensation of the hems on her socks . She would call them "stripes" and had to wear them inside out . Various sensations especially when eating . It wasn't the taste but the sensation of how things feel . I also CANNOT touch cardboard, cotton wool, toilet role tubes and other Various things . I could tell my daughter wasn't just been awkward she would get hysterical if I made her put her socks on the right way around . And even snd 25 she still wears them that way . I'm glad that you realise that it isn't your children's fault . Best wishes from the UK X
I was going to comment something about kids being so funny and weird, but then I realized I most certainly have several weird sensory quirks as well. One of my main things is never touching tile with wet feet. Can’t stand it for some reason.

23 years undetected is NOT really about Zoya any more, it's about the systems & structures. It's disturbing to hear them say they will recheck the "foreign' doctors because that is just politicizing it, given existing race dynamics. They MUST check ALL the doctors. Broken structures mean that LOCAL fraudsters are getting away with even much MORE than Zoya did. Fix the system and stop covering up your embarrassment with side shows as patients continue to suffer! 😢
Excellent video and you are very engaging to watch and listen to. ❤😊 I've heard this story, it's terrible, nhs psychiatrists in the UK are generally awful, but to have a fake one get away with heinous behaviour for so long is unforgivable 💔

Thank you for this well research video. I am a psychiatrist in uk and heard of this case but not the details. You may want to look into Harold shipman who was the most infamous gp doctor in uk, caught by trying to get money from someone will.
Oh man I ever found out something like that happened to me they wouldn't have to worry about retirement they would have 3 hots and a cot . This lady needs a phycologist herself.
10:14 to be fair…£67,000 would be $88,000 USD in 2001. Adjusted to today’s value, that would be about $145,000 USD. Median salary for a psychiatrist today is $225,000. She was not doing that well and rightfully so.
What a crazy case. I don’t know how these people can pretend to be something they’re not and for this woman to work that long before getting busted. Thank you 🙏 Petal Palmer! ❤
I wonder what this means for physicians in the US, now that the state of Florida is opening the way for internal medical school graduates to practice medicine as full time attending physicians without any residency training in the US 😬
@@annamossity8879 It's called Florida SB 7016! It's for the 2024 legislature and you can find a PDF copy of it online. It's very informative on what it is they're trying to do in Florida.
Actually, it just goes to show that the NHS powers-that-be don't do reference / qualification checks when hiring doctors. She obviously came across as knowing a lot as she got away with this for 23 years.
Devils advocate: during WW2 women could just walk in off the street and become nurses. Not that that compares to being a doctor, but it does show that you can do a job in medicine with little or no training. The biggest issue is can you do the job or not, and do it well. Zholia could not.
The difference with that is that during war times people were needed. Governments knew those people didn't have an education. Anyone who was able bodied, could sew someone closed and stick in a needle or find a vein. Therefore they could help. This woman wasn't supporting anyone. There was no war she was involved in, no one was desperate for her help. She was a self serving monster.
Well done GMC well done, unfortunately our justice system is laughable she wouldn’t have served the full 7 year. Also highly doubt if she had to pay any money back to our broken nhs

What's more frightening is the fact that your own doctor or dentist etc may also be a fake unqualified imposter! 😮
They just haven't been found out...YET!
Petal, you are amazing. You're the only youtuber that I literally drop everything and click on every new video. Wishing you health and happiness.
Your hair is growing so beautifully I love your curl pattern! Very healthy and pretty 😍❤️
What's that got to do with the story?
@@beckyf2845 What does your comment have to do with the story?
She's not the first fake doctor and unfortunately won't be the last because hospitals etc don't do their due diligence when they hire these people. Also, every time there's a problem with a doctor, instead of taking the proper legal measures, that hospital gives them a glowing review to get rid of them and so they end up doing more damage at another hospital or clinic or wherever.
We need to hold these institutions responsible for stuff like this. I'm getting sick of stories like this
@@mumenRhyderSadly.
@@mumenRhyderoff topic but your hair looks tasty, like a fruit roll up. very pretty
What letter did her name start with?
@@soulchild2003 No idea; I only met her once when I was running a high fever.
Short with short red hair that was very obviously not her natural colour
Normally those doctor's visit take two minutes: I pop in, show my horribly infected leg, get a prescription and toodle off to the pharmacy for´my sweet sweet antibiotics but that time it took almost 15 minutes due to her utter ineptness.
If it's so easy to fake being a doctor I should buy a lab coat and fix my own problems since no one wants to help
Honestly same. My country's health system is so fucked, I'm better trying to heal my chronic issues with supplements and prayer than wait for a doctor to be available
@@ragdollrose2687couldnt have expressed my frustrations better, amen sibling 😭💀
Perioood. It took me so long to get diagnosed, I almost went to medical school out of spite.
@@ragdollrose2687 America?
I wonder whether a lot of them are actually trained in anyway.
yep soon as i heard she was working in the uk as a psych was like lol yep checks out! :(
Yeah I'm from Canada and live in alberta, the province that pays its doctors the least in the country.
You are spot on, and this is also a massive problem in the US.
We had a great doctor in trauma room who got jailed as an impostor . He was a vet.
How shameful because he was excellent surgeon and saved every life he encountered 😢
Just interested in whether he was a veteran or a veterinarian ?
@@dallynutkat3252also curious. I've known a few veterinarians I'd trust more than many MDs TBH. Previous RN, previous Vet tech
But if he was so good, why not go back to school and get that degree? Surely he would do great, since he had the practical knowledge.
She should have to pay back the NHS for all her past wages also which were taken by deceit.
I belive you 100%.
She should have been charged with assault for every person she subjected to ECT.
What’s scary is I’m pretty sure there’s someone out there rn doing the same thing
How she did this is crazy as a medical student, I've seen smart house officers, senior and junior regsters, get their ass handed to them by consultants for not knowing things .so was she that smart or are consultants in the uk more laid back
But of both I suspect.
No, there’s a lack of staff in our mental health sector so I suspect that they don’t want to lose what little staff there is because our mental health section of the nhs is completely shocking.
@@LeilaVividSounds The US has a similar problem. Lack of therapists and psychiatrists and everyone is booked solid.
If I were a betting person I'd say it was because she was 1. Female and 2. Foreign. No consultant wants to risk being accused of sexism or xenophobia. Even at the expense of patient welfare... Pathetic isn't it?

I don't understand how "fast tracked" meant absolutely zero background check or degree verification to be a DOCTOR!?!?
People are too believing in the authorities.
Often when they see a uniform they turn blind and naive.
We must be more skeptical and ask and prove everything.
There are too many narcissists and psychopaths and con man's aut there. We should not make their freaking game easy. Stupidity aneables evil.
We must get smarter.
Why did they need to fast track them in the first place? That sounds like putting it before normal verified application routes.
Girl hush, Petal dropped another one 🗣️
i work with a vulnerable population/many psychiatrists who are actually good at their jobs, but so many of my patients have had bad experiences with mental healthcare or a lot of internalized stigma so it's hard for them to trust ....imagine finally getting to trust a psychiatrist and then they turn out to be taking advantage of you :/ poor patients probably couldn't trust anyone again so i bet their mental health must have suffered even more :/
I am not surprised, not in the slightest.
In psychologic setup, if a patient speaks up, they just add another label (diagnostic) to them.
I love that you find cases that are a bit more obscure but so very interesting! Great presentations! Thank you
CONGRATS ON YOUR SPONSORSHIP PETAL! fantastic work, well deserved.

What did she do with all the money she made, she did not even have furniture.
Why the HELL would you steal from a sick elderly woman wtf!!! Breaks my heart.
Everything done in the dark will eventually come into the light for all eyes to see!
Maybe at the end of time.

Damn, if I lucked out enough to slip through the cracks and ne able to practice, I would work like hell to learn and be able to fly under the radar!

Thank you so much. Saved me from dying of boredem WFH but with no work to do. Amazing as always! Xx
