  • Penstemon, also known as beard tongue, is an upright bushy perennial or subshrub. I have covered penstemons quite extensively in my pruning penstemon video which was published this spring. So please see this video for more information.
Penstemons flower best in full sun and like a fertile, moist but well drained soil. A wet, heavy soil is unsuitable for penstemons and they won't flower much in the shade. Water them in dry spells.
Penstemons are long flowering and give great late season colour. They can be short-lived perennials as they can be knocked by a harsh winter.
They are attractive to bees and butterflies.
The penstemons I talk about in this video are Penstemon 'Phoenix Appleblossom' and Penstemon 'Purple Bedder'.
