I have been scouring, trying to find the answer to how to prune penstemon. I was afraid I went too far, thankfully I did it correctly. You are the first person I found to explain it, thanks so much!

I was fearing my penstemon were dead, as the first year I've seen it completely die back. Thanks for covering this. I definitely wasn't pruning correctly.

I'm in zone 5 so I will abide by the "Mother's Day" rule (2nd week in May). I have to do it with my hellebores also. OHHHh, to live a zone or two below so we could have a longer growing season!! 😊

Thanks so much. I've never gone down that low so now am expecting nicer new growth now as I follow your advice.

Last year I hade purchased serval of these beautiful looking Plants all of them died over the Winter ,but in 1 of the flower pots 1 came back alive & now it’s almost 3 feet tall & with thick steams growing wonderfully! I’m so happy it survived the Winter outdoors ! Now watching your Video how to care for it throughout the Winter…I’ll try my best keeping it Alive !Thank you for the Information! 🤞🏼👍🏻

Thanks for your very clear information on the pruning of these plants. I find it so hard to resist the temptation to prune my Salvias and Gaura, but you are right... much wiser to wait ; I live in Italy and I think in my area end of March could be ok. You encouraged me to cut back harder than I usually do; again I think you are right and again thanks. As we say : " buon lavoro!".

I was treating Gaura as an annual but you inspired me to try overwintering it. Thank you Rosy🌸

I’ve always done exactly what you said people do with penstemon. I shall take it right back next April.

Never leave Melianthus ,Myrtis or Gaura outside to overwinter in a pot. Asking for trouble .Penstemon and Salvia are tougher but not certain. Keep on dry side in unsheated greenhouse until mid spring. Then bring out and cut back

Absolutely brilliant video. I was just about to chop/tidy up my penstemon and salvia this weekend, I’ll hold off now for a week or two. Does this also apply to fuchsia plants?

Really useful video Rosemary...again. Quick question: I have a beautiful Euphorbia Ascot Rainbow which has been brilliant for 2 years, but this year, the heavy cold spell has decimated half the stems... I assume I should cut these stems right to the ground too? Next year I’ll try and fleece it!

thank you for the very useful video. I have a salvia hot lips. it is now the first week of may and i see only one small leaf emerging from below, should i leave hard cutting, like you've explained, until i see more growth? I did cut a 1/3 off the plant late winter, so right now there are 25cm old dead wood stems and not much else. i'm in france, zone 8a. thank you

I really don't like shrubby salvias like Salvia microphylla, it's just a big round woody mess, it adds no structure to the garden. They're super easy for beginners, but then once you know more about gardening and you want to combine perennials you're like "I don't like that I need to take them all away". Same thing with lavander.
