How to choose the correct pot.
Pots make a great addition to a garden. There are loads of different pots to choose from in most garden centres, from sleek urban containers to traditional terracotta planters.
In this video I show you how to choose pots and what compost to use.
Make sure your pot is a decent size and nice and roomy for the plant you are buying so it has enough nutrients and space to develop and grow. Small pots also dry out easily. Your pot should be about a third bigger than the plastic pot the plant comes in. Your pot needs to have a drainage hole and be frost proof.
Use a good quality multipurpose compost for your pots such as RocketGro, which is peat free and endorsed by the Soil Association. It’s ideal for annuals and herbaceous perennials in pots. For more permanent plants in pots such as shrubs and trees use a soil based compost with a bit of multipurpose compost mixed into it.
The nutrients in multipurpose compost only last 2-3 months so liquid feed your pots after that to keep them going. See my recent video on liquid feeding pots. It is also a good idea to top dress your pots each spring to give them a new lease of life and I have also done a video on that.
Pots need to be watered regularly and more frequently than plants in the ground. Even if it rains you may need to water your pots as the rain doesn’t really penetrate a pot unless it rains heavily. So keep an eye on the watering.
I only have one border in my garden so I have lots of pots on my sunny patio so I can have lots more plants! My patio is brimming with colourful annuals and herbaceous perennials. My front garden is entirely a pot garden and gives me beauty all through the year, from a spring flowering camellia to winter flowering Viburnum tinus.

Add a burst of sunshine to your garden with Rudbeckia!
มุมมอง 20012 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Rudbeckias add a real splash of colour in late summer and early autumn. The bees also love them and we need to support our bees. Native to North America, rudbeckia is also known as coneflower, because of its distinctive conical centre, and black-eyed Susan. Rudbeckia likes full sun and a reasonably fertile, moisture-retentive soil. It may wilt in prolonged dry spells so it may be a good idea to...
Add a cottagey look with Gaura
มุมมอง 9621 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I love Gaura lindheimeri. It’s a lovely soft, airy looking herbaceous perennial which gives grace and beauty like no other plant at this time of year. Gaura lindheimeri has slender spikes of delicate, starry white flowers flushed with pink from mid summer into the autumn. I particularly like the cultivar ‘Whirling Butterflies’ which has white flowers that seem to float and dance like butterflie...
Add Late Summer Colour to Your Garden with Echinacea
มุมมอง 337วันที่ผ่านมา
Echinacea purpurea is native to prairie land in eastern USA and seeing it growing wild must be a spectacular sight as it is such a stunning flower. There used to be only a few cultivars available in shades of pink, purply pink and white (such as ‘Magnus’ and ‘White Swan’) but now there are lots of cultivars to choose from in wonderful shades of orange, yellow and red. Many of these are shorter,...
Feed your Pots Now!
มุมมอง 10014 วันที่ผ่านมา
Your summer flowering plants in pots may be running out of nutrients by now so it is a good idea to give them a liquid feed. The nutrients in a good quality multipurpose compost last 2-3 months depending on the brand you buy. I use RocketGro multipurpose compost which is peat free and endorsed by the Soil Association. The nutrients in it last three months. Check the information on your bag of c...
Flowers for Bees
มุมมอง 25814 วันที่ผ่านมา
Bees are in serious decline and we need to attract them to our gardens. According to Friends of the Earth we have lost around 13 percent of our bee species and another 35 species are currently at risk of extinction. Intensive farming and the use of pesticides such neonicotinoids are responsible for much of the decline of bees. Buy organic food when you can and plant flowers in your garden to su...
Attract butterflies to your garden with Verbena bonariensis
มุมมอง 12621 วันที่ผ่านมา
Butterflies are really down in numbers this year so it's important that we attract butterflies into our gardens. Verbena bonariensis is a great plant for butterflies, providing a source of nectar for several months from mid summer to early autumn. It's also attractive to bees and other pollinators. I love the light and airy feel of Verbena bonariensis and its see through quality. It's great pla...
Front garden revisited in August
มุมมอง 33621 วันที่ผ่านมา
I made a video of this front garden at the end of May and I wanted to show you what it looks like now. This is a client of mine's front garden and I did the planting design for it. My client is delighted with the results as am I. This garden looks good all year round, which is really important for a front garden as it is constantly on view. This garden combines evergreen shrubs with spiky, arch...
Add height and movement with a beautiful grass
มุมมอง 39928 วันที่ผ่านมา
Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster', also known as feather reed grass, is one of my favourite ornamental grasses. It's a tall, very vertical grass and makes a real statement in a border. It's also great as a screening plant. This ornamental grasses likes an open position in full sun and a well drained soil. Ultimately, it gets to about 1.8m in height by 1m in spread. It's a clump forming...
Asters are ace
มุมมอง 133หลายเดือนก่อน
Asters are the mainstay of the late summer/autumn garden. They provide lots of colour and beauty when other plants are waning, Aster x frikartii 'Monch' is my favourite aster. It flowers for ages, from August until October The great plantswoman Beth Chatto said it was 'absolutely the best Michaelmas Daisy for long display and sheer beauty'. Michaelmas daisies are so called because they are in f...

Grow penstemons for lovely late season colour.
มุมมอง 148หลายเดือนก่อน
Penstemon, also known as beard tongue, is an upright bushy perennial or subshrub. I have covered penstemons quite extensively in my pruning penstemon video which was published this spring. So please see this video for more information. Penstemons flower best in full sun and like a fertile, moist but well drained soil. A wet, heavy soil is unsuitable for penstemons and they won't flower much in ...

If the weather's too hot, plant a garden in a pot!
มุมมอง 329หลายเดือนก่อน
It's usually too hot to plant in the ground now (July) but you can plant up a pot with lovely summer/autumn flowering plants. When I made this video it was too hot and dry to plant in the ground. However, you may find the weather has cooled off a bit and we've had some rain and it is OK to plant in the ground when you watch this video. The best times to plant are autumn and spring because there...

Hi Nicholas. Thanks for your nice comments. Glad you like my plant selections.
Thankyou Kitty for your fabulous channel, so much helpful information in so shorter time, I had a health problem recently and lost a lot of my gardening knowledge, you are helping me get it all back :)
Hi Lynn. Thanks for your lovely comments. I hope you're feeling better now. I'm so glad I have been able to help you.
Glorius colour! I was thinking you've done well with this weather. Its my first time trying salvias, farinacea and victoria blue home grown but the weather has been a shocker, all my plants are a lot shorter this year, im taller than some of my sunflowers at only 5ft lol all good things come in small packages, thats what i say 😂
Thanks for your nice comments and for sharing. I really like Salvia farinacea and especially 'Victoria Blue'. Yes, the weather has been very mixed this summer but we seem to be getting a bit of a summer now. Yes, you're right, all good things come in small packages!
Nice pots and plant selections. We have salvia amistad and salvia love and wishes in pots. We keep them in the glasshouse over winter to protect them. We feed them with tomato feed once a week during the summer.
Hi Nicholas. Thanks for your nice comments and for your good advice about overwintering and feeding tender salvias. Salvia 'Amistad' and 'Love and Wishes' are both beautiful plants.
Wow nice 👍👍🎉🎉
Thank you!
Looks beautiful!
Thanks Pheebs! Lots of love Kit xx
Should it be pruned only in winter, or could it also be pruned in late summer? Mine is incredibly leggy and I don't want it too get too out of hand.. 😂
Can one of these plants go red twice in a year, mine never did but it has this year, is it down to Climate change or have i just been lucky, it should go red again about March or at least i hope so because they look beautiful when they come out deep red, thanks. 🐞🌺.
Thank you for your comment. Did you prune your pieris? That might be the reason for a second flush of young, red foliage.
I think mine did too.
Nice selection of plants.
Thanks Margaret, glad you liked them.
Would very much like to see more final/end results of the plants weeks later in your videos, even if its just a photo if you took inspiration from somewhere. I know it makes videos much longer to complete but they are the money shots. I would have loved to have seen the result of your clients cottage garden in full bloom with the hardy geraniums, campanulas and foxgloves, as i can only imagine. You're a delight to watch and i look forward to learning more, take care 😊
Thanks so much for your comment. Definitely a good idea and I plan to do that in the future. Best wishes, Kitty
Whats the tree called
Photinia. It's an evergreen shrub that's been pruned into a tree.
Beautiful ferns and lovely planting!
Thanks Ros. Love Kitty xx
Thank you for your comment. Kitty
Hi Kitty, what is the name of this Fern ?
Thanks for your question. I am sorry I don't know the names of the ferns mentioned in my video as I didn't keep the plant labels as I normally do. However, I planted Polystichum aculeatum (Hard Shield Fern) in this garden which is a great fern. It is evergreen and adaptable to poor, dry soils. It's quite a large fern, about 90cm x 90cm, height and spread.
I laughed when you said you don't like looking at soil. You mean, poor quality soil. Have a word with your client and discuss the merits of manure, mulching, etc. It will be worth the time and expense. Trust me, I'm a cottage gardener! Thanks for sharing your knowledge of plants. It was useful and entertaining.
Thank you for your comment.
Thank you
You're welcome! Thank you! Kitty

We have three geranium rozannes in the flower beds. They are in full bloom at the moment and will be cut back at the end of June or early July. They will come back again for late summer colour.
Lovely! Thanks for leaving me a comment. Happy gardening! Kitty
Rozanne is my favorite. Love the way they weave among the other plants and blooms for such a long time.❤
You don't need to cut back Geranium 'Rozanne' because she flowers until October anyway. Kitty
@@elizabethbarberis9957 I completely agree Elizabeth! Geranium Rozanne' is fab and one of my favourite hardy geraniums! Kitty
We have planted 2 x9cm little containers last April into the flowerbeds and they are growing very well. Hopefully they flower this year and slugs and snails don't seem to like them.
Hi Nicholas. Thanks for leaving a comment. Good luck with your plants! I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner, somehow I missed your comment. Happy gardening! Best wishes, Kitty

Here in Portland Oregon, we had an ice storm last Winter, I have a large hardy fuchsia that I love, looks all dried up now, so I need to give it a good pruning. So your video showed up just in time.
Thanks so much for your comment and I'm glad my video was helpful. I'm so sorry I did not reply sooner, for some reason I missed your comment. Kitty x
I need to prune mine that grew quite wild in my garden here in Portland Oregon, I do like the flowers though....
