- UK Railway trains at Ely Station on the Fen line (Cambridgeshire) including Great Northern, Greater Anglia, East Midlands Railway and CrossCountry in August 2020! 🏴
A Weekday of British trains at the interchange station of Ely heading around the East of the United Kingdom. Trains include:
- Great Northern Class 387s
- Greater Anglia Class 755s
- East Midlands Railway Class 156s
- CrossCountry Class 170s
- DB Schenker Class 66s
- GBRF Class 66s.
Filmed on 25th August 2020, Between 11.50 and 13.15 during Storm Francis.

Train Numbers - e.g. 43032 or 800110 - These are train numbers which are specific to that train. No trains can be numbered the same. Locos are 5 digit numbers where the first two numbers are the class of train e.g. 67010 would be a class 67. Multiple Units are 6 digit numbers where the first three numbers are the class of train e.g. 390154 would be a class 390. Click Here to learn more

Set Number - e.g. WB64 or NL04 - These are semi-permanent loco hauled coach formations which are kept together for formalities. The first two letters usually indicate the maintenance depot responsible e.g. OC is Old Oak Common, LA is Laira. The number indicates the rake number.

Nearly lost my hat here, would have gone to Stansted Airport otherwise! Stayed in this city in May 2004, at the Lamb Hotel. My father was rail journey crazy, insistent on going on every line in the country he hadn't yet been on, which left little room to actually explore the places we visited, but we did have lunch in the cafe by the river, and saw all the boats by the marina. Yet to return there one day, but great video :)
Very enjoyable film, I have been toying with the idea of going to Ely at some stage, seems as if there is still plenty to be seen
Hi Tornado922, Yep! It’s one of those places where your always going to see some action. COVID has heavily reduced the West Anglia 317/379 services and I’m pretty sure the PBO-IPS 755s are now two hourly as well. Highly recommend it. Staff were great as well 😃

I had a similar experience as well. Glad you enjoyed it, things have changed a bit since then; the level crossing has closed but.. the platform shop is still open!

How were the station staff here? Did you have to apply for/get permission to shoot here first?
Inspiration is good! There aren’t many stations I go to blindly, I always do my research before hand. Like most GA stations, as long as you stay behind the yellow line and respect them, the staff are happy for you to do your thing. Have fun! 😃

Thanks Arnold. I am told this station gets busy with freight at times as it’s one of those places everything has to come through! I’d like to do Kings Cross but I think there are some works happening there at the moment so it might be a little reduced.

No matter what the system or the country and/or place , getting train to run on time is something that has never been 100% achieved !

@@StarlifeStudios No problem! Yep, started my channel this week. Grew up in Norfolk originally, now living in the Greenwich area. Always loved the railways and actually work in video in my regular job, had a week off this week so finally decided to combine the two passions and give it a try. Loving it even though it’s early days. If you have a minute let me know what you think to the footage in terms of composition - I’m only shooting mobile at the moment but hoping to get my hands on more kit soon 👍
Awesome! Its great that you’ve decided to start, I know a lot of other railway enthusiasts which won’t start making videos because they’re scared of the results. Your quality is excellent, even with a phone, you can still achieve very high quality videos. One thing I would say is that it looks like your using the Johnston LU font, that’s fine for now but you may have issues with TfL for using it as you grow as a channel. I’ve been burned by using the LO logos in some of my videos. I would also space your uploads out a bit more to give the TH-cam algorithm some time to suggest it to viewers before releasing your next video, 48-72hrs apart has worked well for me in the past. Have fun!

do you think you could do some place in Scotland next? would really enjoy that as the trains up here are different from the English ones (take for example the 380, 385, 320, 334, or 318).
Hi DragonBoy, I would love to visit Scotland. My actual plan before COVID was to do a full circuit in Scotland in August from Ayr, Glasgow, Falkirk, Edinburgh, Dunbar, Dundee, Perth and Aberdeen but as you can probably expect, things have changed and I've had to conserve my trips around the country. I hope to be able to update you on this soon. I appreciate that this (and Wales) are one of my weakest areas and I would like to change that.
What date did you go here? I think I may have seen you spotting.

Nice video! I was quite suprised that a Class 156 is operating the Norwich to Liverpool Lime Street service, I was expecting a Class 158. I noticed something that during peak hours, there are more trains and I'm not joking! From where I live, there would be 2 trains per hour from each direction during off-peak hours while during peak hours, there would be 4 trains per hour (Again, from each direction). Also, you could try visiting Rugby, the Pendolinos and Voyagers coming from London get an amazing tilt.
It is common for 156s and 158s (even 153s) to run this route. I believe you! It’s that age old problem. As a content creator, I would love for every station I visit to have the traffic of say, London Bridge, but the reality is that the maximum traffic at most stations occurs in the morning and evening but that leaves 10 hours where the traffic is reduced.
@@StarlifeStudios I'm sure you're familar on what's happening with EMR Regional and Intercity services. They're getting Turbostars on ALL Regional routes while on the Intercity, Hitachi AT300s will be everywhere except for the London to Corby route as the Desiros will operate the route (They will also use a few Adelantes from Hull Trains until EMR gets more of the AT300s on the Midland Mainline).
Yep! It’s my local mainline so I hope to be able to capture the transition. There will be a lot of change on that route. I’d like to think that if you looked back on this video in 5 years you would see the differences.

Hi TTV! I haven’t been to Biggleswade but I would like to. I don’t think the East Coast has that much variety at the moment because of Hull Trains and Grand Central both being on a reduced service.

Also, I thought that Liverpool--Norwich was 158s not 156
I was going to do it a few weeks ago! But when I visited there was no Overground services 😞 So I left it for the time being, I will visit again because I think it would be great in another Trains at Speed London video.
I think it’s a mixture, it can be 156s or 158s but at times 156 and 153s have been known to run this service as well as some 222s from Nottingham!

Charing Cross has had a lot of service reductions due to COVID but I hope to go there soon. Maybe even during rush hour, we’ll see what happens!
Odd no GA 317s
I am afraid not. Currently GA West Anglia services are suspended due to COVID. The only services that are 317s are in peak hours.
