it was win win for me because I bought the PS2 around mid to late 2001 because it was a DVD player and its games, plus it had backwards compatibility for PS1 games. One of my favorite consoles of all time, top 3.
PS3 was also the cheapest blu-ray player so having a movie format is not always a deciding factor, the PS2 was the first to have gaming and movies as the same format. That didn't work out so well with the PS3 until after the Slim consoles arrived. The PS4 started pretty much like the PS1 did cheaper but also not excluding used games. Microsoft gave Sony the victory very early on.

Sega lost it grip lunching multiple consoles within a few years etc. people lost their trust in Sega The reason why Nintendo becomes collectible is because of Mario, Mario kart, super smash etc.. they had limited titles compared to PS2 who had 700+ games. When you ask a Nintendo collector they’ll rattle off almost the same games while a Sony fans may not have the same taste. Thus making it a larger range of games verse what Nintendo offers

At the end of the day, it comes down to the games. Competition and being a DVD player might be assisting factors, but really it's about GTA, God of War, Jak and Daxter, etc. PS4 is okay, but it's not "the modern day PS2 of this generation" unless you're talking about the ports, mtx, and SBI-influenced PS4 games being compared to the mostly unfiltered classics on PS2.
The original Xbox wasn't a "kiddy console". The Xbox also had a DVD player and a lot of people definitely wanted the Original Xbox (at least in the US). But, the PS2 was indeed the most popular console thanks to the success of the PS1 and most importantly, It's vast library of games/exclusives. Nothing beats the impact the PS2 had. Love that thing

The PS4 isn't the new PS2 because there is no collector market for PS4. At least not for the console and even games, it's debatable. PS2 system is a system that can't be experienced anywhere else but on the PS2 (and emulation) You can't play PS2 games on anything that isn't in a PS2 (saved some hd ports or a very small portion of games that are available on PSN to purchase). There is value on having a PS2 and owning PS2 games for that reason. PS4 games can be played on a PS5. Every single game. There isn't a reason to invest on a PS4 if you have a PS5 and most worthwhile exclusive PS4 games already have PS5 versions available. PS4 is the only sony console that is pointless to keep once you get a PS5.

I feel that the quality of the top and mid teir games on ps4 and switch are on par. Sony started moving towards more 3rd person, behind the shoulder, action, narrative driven games. But the early library is diverse enough to counterbalance it. And the switch does have some top-tier games. But the level of shovelware that litters the e-store is disgusting

I was with the GameCube day 1. I got a ps2 later on. I did have a Dreamcast and a Xbox but at the end I stuck with Nintendo and PlayStation cause they had all the games I want even till today I stick with both. I didn’t like halo and gta is trash.

The main thing about the ps4 Xbox one generation is that most of the best games were multi platform. The core list of exclusive franchises for each console is pretty small when you think about it.
