Awesome video!!! Very informative!! I wish all garden centers had people like Calvin working for them. Very knowledgeable. I have this problem every time I go shopping for plants. No one can help me. Thank goodness for TH-cam. If you can't find someone like Calvin, at least you can look him up on TH-cam and get your questions answered. If I haven't said already. Thanks Calvin. Thanks Volunteer Gardener for posting this video. Now I have the tools that I need to finally complete my butterfly garden. I'm excited.!!!!!!
Impressive presentation. Calvin was phenomenal with his knowledge of the plants, butterflies and hummingbirds. He was articulate and knowledgeable. Bring him back
This was one of the best informational on butterfly gardens I have seen. Thank you! You both were to the point and very clear. I want to go to my garden center now!
My hummingbirds and butterflies love the Verbena bonsariensis (See Through Verbena). It reseeds and returns every year. The birds, bees and butterflies visit it everyday.
I have several large pots of Agastache (aka Hummingbird Mint), Crocosmia, and a huge Butterfly Bush (non-seeding type) in my yard that attract Hummers and Butterflies. I also planted this year some pots of Echinacea (coneflower) and Cat Mint. Echinacea was mainly planted for the seeds they provide finches. My Hummers feed both on the plants and the feeders I hang up. Just about everything I plant is to feed Hummers especially, except for my Lily plants, they are for me as they smell so wonderful!
So love this video! This is the first year I planted my flowers by seeds. I have flowers taller than me. My sister went to heaven last year and she loved butterflies. Thank you for making this video, God bless and have a wonderful weekend!
😊lots of gr8 ideals ive watch this last year & Calvin is up on all his plants& very good at his job👍more plant places should have staff that knows there STUFF thanks Calvin
Hi , I am Som , Somnath Pal Das from Calcutta India. I love butterflies a lot and I have created butterfly garden in my home since last 10 years. Now I am creating butterfly gardens in school , colleges or in friend's place to help butterflies to survive in concrete city. I loved your video and started following you. I will watch your videos. Happy Butterflying and Go Green.
It would be great if you can list the name of flowers on the screen while you are pointing at them . It is hard to catch names since some of them are in Latin . Thanks so much .
This year I noticed that the hummingbirds are feeding on the native plants frist before feeding at the feeder. I live in zone 7a in GA. They arrive here in mid April I usually see the males frist and then the females& juveniles in May till late September. They really are attracted to the black&blue saliva. The black & blue saliva is easy to grow and it spreads in the garden. Out of all the pollinator plants in my garden they are very busy on the back&blue saliva.
Thanks for your video and I would just like to say that yours and other similar video's are very inspirational and as a result I have made quite good progress in planting plants that are good for the butterflies and bees in both my garden and in my parents garden. There has been a big decline in butterflies since I was a kid but only today I did see quite a good few number in my parents garden along with many caterpillars on my cabbages which was fine ( I can go to the supermarket!). My garden has loads of bees and some butterflies from time to time, am hoping to improve upon it. Only a few years ago, it was a small piece of wasteland so it is completely untrue to say we can't change the world, it is possible. Birds, bees and butterflies everybody, the 3 B's to think about in your gardens.
Calvin mentioned Tennessee so I had to watch. I’m starting my small flowerbed to attract hummingbirds. I’m about put on my mask and get to the nursery. Calvin come on over to Memphis. We need you. 😇 Thanks for the information from your recent subscriber. ❤️
Thanks Calvin, for all the great information, I only wish that you were working at the Garden Center near me. Do you have your own TH-cam channel? I would totally subscribe. This Nursery should have a TH-cam channel with Calvin as a host.
Hi edagdwg love anything that keep butterfly coming love them nice to see butterfly's flying around they come to me and set I talk to them thanks for stopping by and so pretty linda j ☮️ 💚💚💚💚💚💯💯💯💯
It might be helpful to interested gardeners if you mention the location of this garden, so one can compare growing season / conditions with their own. After a bit of further looking, it appears to be Nashville, TN...correct?
Yes. Volunteer Gardener is produced by Nashville Public Television. It broadcasts on public tv stations statewide, but we have quite a number of You Tube subscribers to our channel too. That is a by product of our broadcast delivery.
Can anyone help me at 6:54 this pretty red flower is he saying "pentiss"? I would love to incorporate that color in that plant in my garden but not sure of its name. Thanks friends.
great vid. my only critique is i wish they would have spent more time saying DON'T PICK CATEPILLARS off the asclepias. i know too many experienced gardeners who only learned this lesson late.
@@sharaudramey9336 People start seeing caterpillars eating the plants down, but don't realize that, THAT'S what the plant is for so they panic and pick off and kill the caterpillars. They forget that caterpillars become butterflies/moths and that after being eaten, the plant will grow back. So yes everybody, when you plant a hostplant, the caterpillars WILL eat it. That's what it's *FOR* When the caterpillars have turned into butterflies and moved on, the plant WILL regenerate itself for the next future batch of caterpillars.
Yes!! Very!! They *LOVE* them Just be sure to use a variety that has the little bright yellow parts exposed for easy access to nectar, and NOT the varieties that are grown with a lot of petals that make them look like pom-poms
That's what i was wondering, just bought some petunia today. Also remembered, grandma had some and butterflies used too fly and hovered around the petunia.
Yes, Petunia are good. I've seen butterflies use them as a nectar source. I think it depends on the variety though. But, from what I've heard, they can host tomato hornworm caterpillars which will then turn into Hummingbird/Sphinx moths and pollinate your flowers at noon and night 😊
Butterfly 🦋 bushes can be problematic! And invasive. Please do your research before planting. Also, it's important to stick to Milkweed native to your area! And Tropical Milkweed is a bad idea.
Would love to see more of Calvin. He’s a wealth of information. Please bring him back🌻🐝🌻
th-cam.com/video/vKCszXC5eGY/w-d-xo.html there you go!

I’m hooked on planting for butterflies and humming birds. I learned about a couple new ones here. Thanks!
Love that guys hat! Many hummingbird and butterfly plants are also good for Honeybees which are in serious decline!

Thank you for this video and for listing the names of the plants you talked about. That’s very helpful!
My hummingbirds and butterflies love the Verbena bonsariensis (See Through Verbena). It reseeds and returns every year. The birds, bees and butterflies visit it everyday.
I like Calvin’s take on plants in lieu of hummingbird feeders. Would have liked to hear more from him.

Nice job Calvin
Extremely informative. Good to see a Garden Center focused on providing this type of information and selection of plants.
Great video. Here in Southern California I have a plant called Sea Lavender. The bees and butterflies both love it and it blooms the whole year round.
Calvin seems like he enjoys what he does and he’s pretty knowledgeable!
Love all those choices, Thanks
Calvin..your the man...love how know your plants
Calvin has just started a new company that does mail order, Tennessee Tropicals. We just recorded 4 new segments with him.
Thanks for the information. Awesome video! I took some notes Calvin✍️👍🙌
Listening to Calvin sounds exactly like Dave Chappelle telling us about gardening. LOL
Thanks Calvin for the great gardening for butterflies!
Wow Calvin! You are Amazing! Love the info!
Love this video. Thank you for all that information
Calvin is solid and knows his stuff. We need him up here in Ohio.

Do those black and blues attract bees, I hate bees
Excellent video !❤🤗
Mr. Owens should start his own TH-cam channel

Awesome video
Enjoyable and informative. Thanks!
Enjoyed. Thanks for the tips.
Great suggestions. Thanks!
Nice job!
Interesting; up in Northern IL, anyway, Asclepias incarnata is pink-purple. Whorled milkweed is white, though.
Wow! Calvin .. where did you learn about all that .. teach me!!
I live in the south and my lantanas come back every year
Also A. Incarnata is purple, the white one is perenis I think.
Here in Florida, the Hummingbird feeders become rancid very quickly due to the heat.

Thanks! I viewed this from Colorado. In any case, a good and helpful presentation, so I should have prefaced my comment with a thanks for the video.
Can anyone help me at 6:54 this pretty red flower is he saying "pentiss"? I would love to incorporate that color in that plant in my garden but not sure of its name. Thanks friends.
They're called "Pentas" and are great hummingbird attractors.

🌼🐝🐛🦋💙ENJOYED💙🐛🦋🌼🐝
Can you PLEASE recommend a starter planting (flowers) for the hummingbird and the butterflies for Los Angeles Ca...PLEASE...Thank You
Salvia’s!
Are zinnias friendly to butterflys and hummingbirds?
Yes!! Very!! They *LOVE* them
Just be sure to use a variety that has the little bright yellow parts exposed for easy access to nectar, and NOT the varieties that are grown with a lot of petals that make them look like pom-poms
What source can I use to purchase these plants? I've been raising monarchs and want to go larger next summer.
Locally owned nursery should have them in usa
Try Prairie Moon
awesome
Are petunias good plants?

Sorry thanks for the comment both of you cheers
Butterfly bush is an invasive plant.
Gold!
Do these type of plants also attract bees, I don't like bees
Asclepias Curassavica is not native to US
Spurs tree
Hybrids are not great for pollinators!
Calvin is my baby daddy
Lol
