As jank as this is, I do find it a bit sad that this wasn't the NES game which had the Wolverine licence. At least Software Creations made better platformers after that.
If you told me that Warwolf was a Journey to Silius-type situation where they lost the X-Men license halfway through development and had to quickly retool it into an original IP, I'd believe you.
It would only make sense that it was originally licensed as X-Men. I can't think of any other reason why it would be the way it is. There's an unreleased Brazilian hack of this, which replaces the lead with Cyclops and Wolverine.
Such a cool game, but so very unpolished. Always wanted to love it but just couldn't. Btw didn't DECO make several games based on the Avengers during this timeframe (I say several because the NES version really doesn't have anything to do with the arcade one, it also has a really similar style to WtlW)? This fact leads me to believe they had plans for a larger IP deal with Marvel at some point but either lost or failed to get the X-Men license. Maybe it had to do with the LJN game coming out in 1991? Probably not, but I still can't help but feel that WtlW was supposed to be a licensed game.
It's definitely possible and it would be right around the time they were working with Marvel. But I don't have any confirmation that this actually was an X-Men game rather than someone swinging hard at their favorite American comics.

What are the differences between the two? Also, they straight-up ripped off some sound effects from Ninja Gaiden.
Radically different background graphics and level design in the Famicom version. The Famicom version is a lot friendlier to play, which when you consider how hostile it is to players...
I rented this one! I think at the time I was always put off by timer-based games so I always found that annoying, at least back then. I don't remember the US version but I'm wondering if this was like the situation with a couple of sunsoft's games, like sunman that was supposed to be a superman game, or RAF which would've been the terminator? or they just really liked american comics, beats me.

Warwolf should have had the title character tearing through the cart and exposing the PCB in the Famicom version as well.
