    This program is good in theory, but poor in execution. I recently tested it out as I wanted to do a completely updated Windows 7 virtual machine from a fresh install. However, I found the interface for the program very unintuitive. Whatsmore, the resulting ISO file with only one architecture of Windows 7 updates comes in at over 5Gb... in contrast if you run the actual Windows Update feature from a fresh install of Windows 7 there's only up to around 1.5Gb of downloads needed. Part of the bloat comes from the fact that you can only select to download updates for the 'Global' version of Windows 7 and not English only. The author of the program is German so by default you have to have all the German specific updates, not to mention all the language packs and all that junk for the global regions. All in all it was good and relatively fast way of downloading all the actual update packages and putting them into one neat ISO archive, but I don't think I'd trust the program to actually update a copy of Windows as you've got no control over the unnecessary updates it installs... which kind of defeats the purpose of doing a clean installation with only the necessary updates. My trust for this program was further questioned when I went to download MS Office 2010 updates separately, where it tried to download about 360 updates totalling multiple gigabytes, if I remember correctly, where again doing it through actual Windows Update presents you with maybe two dozen updates at most. So god knows what it was trying to download there as I quit before it could finish. It's a very dubious program to say the least with inefficiencies that unfortunately detract from its obvious efficiencies.

    3 years old .. I guess some of the best programs do not necessarily need updating the videos here
    It is a wonderful program.

    Thanks for your help! I didn't know how to install the d/l's once it was finished, or even where they were. Once you showed me, I checked the 'client' folder.. and there it was! I help the kids in the neighborhood learn to fix their own PC's, and this is a GREAT tool!
    Will be donating to WSUS, too!

    Well, the tool is a nice idea, but it's *not a secure way* to update Windows. To update you need to trust this tool. At 9:07 you can see, that it is from an "Unknown Publisher", it's not signed by Microsoft. UAC is even warning you with a yellow UAC pop up window. On the one side you can't blame the developers of that tools for that, but on the other side you also can't trust them because it is not signed. It could even download and contain malware, how do you want know that if you don't make a security audit of that tool? The real problem of all this is, that Microsoft isn't offering their own tool that can do such a job. They assume that every Windows PC is connected to the internet and thus can use the normal Windows Update procedure. Shame on Microsoft for that.

  • @ciriloperez2667
    @ciriloperez2667 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    After the initial round of updates, does anyone know how you add future MS updates? Do you simply run the tool again, and will it see what's already downloaded? In other words, if I windows is up to date today and next week MS adds 20 updates, will this tool only download those 20 updates or will it want to download all 200+ updates?

    Invaluable tool. I just built a virtual machine in Virtualbox on a Linux host OS. Winblows updates was chewing up 100% CPU for hours and hours with nothing to show for it so I bailed out of it and sought this off line solution. Thanks for this tutorial. But seriously, "No idea why [macrosuck] hasn't put it out"? LOL! That's funny.

      Try downloading everything on another (desktop/faster ) machine...then run the install tool on the tablet for the updates you need. That's the cool part of it, you can download and store the updates on a flash drive.

    How would you exclude the updates that would introduce windows spyware to your computer? Alot of the updates are hard to determine except be researching the specific update numbers.

    Everything seemed to go as it should. However, once a few updates were installed on my offline computer, I rebooted to install the remaining updates. The command prompt shows "ERROR: Medium neither supports your WIndows or Office Version" after checking the medium content. Any idea what could be causing this issue?

Also, I found a similar article which shows an example of integrating security updates from WSUS Offline Update tool into a Windows 10 installation task over a network using the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT). Thus, you can configure the automatic deployment of a fully patched Windows 10 image. www.action1.com/kb/integration-WSUS-Offline-Update-tool-with-MDT.html

    hey Eli how are you mate
    I've been using Offline Updates for quiet a while now and it hasn't been necessary to ask this question until recently
    but...
    QUICK QUESTION
    RE : the whole thing about how Win 10 is such an irritating pain in the arse
    with the following the upates being installed
    KB3035583
    and recently
    KB3173040
    after installing WSUS offline updater
    DO YOU KNOW OF A WAY TO SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDE THESE TWO UPDATES FROM OCCURING
    it'd be helpful if you do
    otherwise, i'll have to remove them manually from the registry.
    not a biggie, but it would help if you knew the answer to this
    thanks mate ahead of time

      You can remove them after the fact from an admin command prompt if you know the KB numbers.

    • @mauricetorres1479
      @mauricetorres1479 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you can use some third-party products such as pdq.com or action1.com to manage windows 10 updates, when WSUS or SCCM stops working and you need to troubleshoot software update management. Pdq has established itself as a fairly reliable product for deploying software and installing updates on multiple computers, but unlike it, Action1 works from the cloud and is able to execute the update process on all computers even that are not always connected to the corporate network.

    WSUS Offline Updater fixed my broken Windows 7 SP1 system.
    My own PC's last windows update dated a year ago. Since then it failed updating. Lazy me wasn't concerned about this, even though my work laptop updated regularily. But I've kept thinking "mine will catch up someday". It never happened.
    Searching for new updates didn't help, update search ui kept searching for hours with no end. So I got an official tool by Microsoft to get it fixed, but it couldn't get WSUS fixed. Then I tried to fix it as described on MS' official pages, but apparently some DLLs cannot be loaded. I've got stuck with a broken WSUS system. Latest suggestion was a system recovery. A system recovery dating back a year ago? Not gonna happen!
    Then I tried WSUS offline updater. It was worth to pass the little time to get 3.2GB downloaded. Also it was worth the little wait to get the updates installed. And then ~MAGIC HAPPENED~ my little windows updater found more updates later. And a day later it also found more updates. It is working again!
    - WSUS Offline Updater fixes broken WSUS on years old PC system.
    - WSUS Offline Updater updates much, MUCH, faster than the windows updater.
    - After using WSUS Offline Updater, even after currently generating an complete update, you may want to search for additional updates on your target system after offline update. My generated update wasn't complete to date, even though I've checked the proper boxes. But it helps fixing broken or for preparing vanilla systems nonetheless.
    EDIT: 00:24 Italian mode.

    I have a i7 7700k so Windows 7 won't let me update it anymore. I tried to use this software so I could update my OS so I could play Destiny 2. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit but every time I use this software it downloads just fine but when I try to install the updates it says "Medium neither supports your Windows nor your Office version. I always check the x64 Global option under Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 (w61/w61-x64). What am I doing wrong?

    It is september 2020. Supposed to download several GB for Win 7 x86 and x64. Ran the client. Then checked in Windows Update which threw an error. Repaired it and there were 3GB of updates remaining. So, it didn’t work for me. Had to wait several hours to repair Windows Update and then, to complete all the updates.

  • @gareginasatryan6761
    @gareginasatryan6761 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    the problem is that downloading Windows updates is not the main issue. From a vanilla W7 SP1, the 140 or so updates take about 20 minutes to download on a slow connection. The installation is the real nightmare. It could take hours to INSTALL all the updates. What MS needs, and I think W10 will start to do, is update rollups. So you don't have to install 140 individual updates.
    With OS X, it takes less than 20 minutes tops to upgrade from 10.10.0 to 10.10.5.

  • @MaxAnderson88
    @MaxAnderson88 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Eli mentions it downloaded 3 GB of files with Win 7 in 2013. In 2020 with Win 8.1 and minimal options checked it took 8 GB and then stopped with an error, presumably because that drive was full. The WSUSoffline.net gives no instructions about how much disk space you need to run this software. It does NOT check which updates are needed and then download just those. So, if Windows Update stops working because of something e.g. memory corruption, this software cannot be set to just do the most recent updates.

    Ok fixed it. You will need to move (cut/paste) the entire folder to the top/main folder of your cpu's hard drive. Then it opens no prob. Having it tucked away in multiple sub folders below ur hd's main/top folder makes the char count too long to load apparently. Anyway fixed. Google if need, but very simple fix.

    Hi Eli, I am not a computer geek so my question might seem a bit dumb to you. Ihave a problem with my laptop that has run out of space to install the windows updates. It only has 32gb ssd no Hdd. I read somewhere that with WSUS you could get windows updates installed on an external HDD. I have downloaded wsus offline 1102 and clicked on update generator.exe. It download a load of files which I copied to my external HDD. How do I get wsus to install my window updates on this external HDD. thanks

    Eli, I have a lot of machines that are offline. All of them are connected to a Domain, which also has no access to the internet. However, work requirements state that I need to keep them all updated. I've installed the WSUS role on one of the domain controllers, and setup the group policy info. But it (obviously) wants to connect to the internet to get the updates. Can I use this (or something similar) to manually update my WSUS server....thereby pushing the updates through my domain controller to all the clients? Therefore, I wouldn't have to install these updates on each machine.... Thanks, Jason

    I know that. Test Microsoft Security Essentials and watch them on youtube. There are way better products out there. Microsoft Security Essentials relies on signatures. If it is not on there signatures your screwed. No 0 day components at all. Doesn't even do good on the link test. That could change in the future. But right now stay away from that product.

    I want you to know that I cried while watching this... Literally cried. This hasn't ended my Vista/defender/update/installer nightmare, but it's FINALLY a step in the right direction, after 2 weeks of hell. Anyone else with the same problem, here is what you need to know: 1) DO NOT INSTALL MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS!!! DON'T DO IT!!! It will trap you in BSOD hell, and you'll have to boot in safe mode and run a system restore. Select every OTHER checkbox option, including "show log". 2) Don't worry when the screen freezes at "listing updates"; I know it seems similar to the infinite "checking for updates" screen, but it's just slow, and will take 4-5 hours to "unfreeze" and finish. 3) Be sure to keep rebooting and re-running WSUS; DON'T STOP until the log says "Nothing to do!" 4) TURN OFF YOUR INTERNET during the WSUS install; if your task scheduler launches a Defender Definition Update during the install, you'll BSOD. 5) When WSUS is done, your Windows Updater should finally work again; just give it 30 mins to run. However, DO NOT INSTALL ANY RECENT MICROSOFT UPDATES!!! Any Windows update from 2016 seems to BSOD Vista/XP computers; I think Microsoft is trying to force us to buy new computers. 6) Disable any/all forms of Microsoft security and use a 3rd party software instead. Defender scans/updates in particular cause my BSODs. 7) Defender Definition updates can't be disabled, but Task Scheduler shows you when they run; mine run at 2:03 AM every day, so I turn off my internet from 2 - 3 AM, and it avoids the update/BSOD.

    This is one of the most confusing programs I've ever encountered (next to Windows itself - pun intended).
    Where are the downloads saved? How does one install the updates? I had to search online for how to install the downloads.
    Why are there (only) .cab's. Why not the actual .exe's or/and .msu's? All one needs to save, is that "client" folder? And all one then has to do is run UpdateInstaller.exe?
    Why couldn't I find this info "in" this utility itself?

      @ibizenco 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, that didn't seem to have worked.
      Belarc Advisor showed 19 updates. I used this WSUS thing, and Belarc again shows 14 missing updates that were in these 19 updates.
      I'll just use Belarc Advisor and do everything manually.

      It only downloads security updates, there will still be optional ones for you to install.

      Re: WSUSoffline Installed files?
      by Dalai » 31.10.2016, 15:29
      WSUS Offline Update consists of two parts:
      downloader (.\UpdateGenerator.exe) and installer
      (.\client\UpdateInstaller.exe). The former can run on any system, the
      latter is supposed to run on the system which you want to update. If you
      didn't use the installer part, you haven't installed any updates but
      just downloaded them.
      So, in short: use
      .\client\UpdateInstaller.exe to install updates on your system (which
      have been downloaded by UpdateGenerator previouly).

    My windows 7 Home Premium x64 install (on a MacBook Pro, under Parallels) was hanging after I began the Windows Update process. I've seen this problem before, so I again researched what the problem was, and how to work around it. I got lucky this time and found an article discussion WSUS Offline Updater. In fact, I was at a forum, and some guy had a one sentence response - "have you tried .. . .".
    So, I downloaded WSUS, and ran it. Yes, it did take a while for it to process the downloading of the designated updates.
    I did get stumped, however, as to what to do next after the USUS downloaded and prepared all the updates for my system. I began searching for the files. I first reviewed the log file (text file) and saw what it was doing and to where it stored the files. I then found the files in the WSUS directory structure "client/*.*" area.
    However, I was still incomplete because I wasn't sure how to proceed. I also didn't want to guess. What through me off was when I re-ran the windows update system form the start menu, the updates where 1) not installed by WSUS; 2) and the Windows Update process continued to hang.
    Therefore:
    I did a second research - search, and found a few obscure articles, and then this video.
    I was reluctant at first to spend time (which you need to do) to watch the video without knowing what the focus of the author would be.
    To my surprise, this video walked through a basic, 1, 2 3 of using WSUS.
    The most important section for me was when the author covered what to do after the download completed. That is, to run the "UpdateInstaller.exe" file under the "../client/*.*" directory.
    To the WSUS author's credit, I did not thoroughly explore their website for any instructions because it appeared to be a developer's style website for WSUS.
    Nonetheless, this video explained what to do, and in fact explained how to use the downloaded updates when updating other systems at other locations. (USB, Network shared drive, etc.)
    Thank you for being concise, and direct with the process of using this great windows update resource - WSUS Offline Updater.
