    This video was incredibly useful. A cool trick I used after learning this is to make 8 columns instead of 4. Then I removed the lines in the 5th column that would be between Wednesday and Thursday and made it more narrow. That way it's one continuous chart and I could write in the numbers and hit tab to fill each one in without having to click between charts. I could also format the entire calendar at once if needed. :)

    Very useful video, thank you so much. Do you perhaps know how to set the pages so when I print it as a book, I can see the pages side by side? I saw your comments about binder but it is easier for binder because you can cut it in half. For book setting I don't understand how to do it. Please help if you can. Thank you so much

    The equivalent size of "letter" is "A4". A5 is half of an A4 and a A3 is double size of a A4. Thanks for your videos. They are really really helpful and very well made. Keep up the good work. Ciao.

      A letter and A4 are not the same thing but it is true that A5 is half an A4 and A3 is double an A4. However A4 is 8.3 by 11.7 inches and is the standard paper used in most countries but in North America we use what is called letter size as our standard paper and it is 8.5 by 11 inches.

    Thank you for the tutorial it was very helpful and well explained.
    There is however a slight confusion with paper sizes,
    A5 (5.83 in by 8.27 in) is about half the size of the US letter size (8.5 in by 11 in).
    A4 (8.27 in by 11.69 in) is closer to US letter size and to double up you could use A3 in landscape (11.69 in by 16.54)

    Hi I have just found your videos you explain everything in such an easy way for us newbies to understand and just made my life that much easier 😀But I have one question I am in the process of creating planner pages e.g. 5 double pages is there a way to save all the pages in one go as I have been saving them one by one . Then creating pdf one by one also. Is there an easier way of doing this. TIA

    Hi Nicki,
    Thank you kindly for this tutorial. It was great and worked perfectly.
    I built a very nice looking calendar, made two versions (one with 6 weeks and one with 5 weeks). I saved them into a folder on my computer and today when I opened the files there is a blank page. I know there is information there because my links pallet shows that two images that I placed onto the calendars are there, but they're not showing either.
    Did I do something wrong? Do you have any idea why my canvas is showing up blank?
    I have never encountered this type of problem before.
    I did build the calendars onto master pages if that makes a difference. They're not showing on the master pages either.
    Please respond with any helpful information.

      That's an odd issue and a bit hard to troubleshoot without seeing it. My first suggestion is to try to save as a PDF and see if the graphics appear there. I have had a rare occasion where my InDesign file is corrupted and loses the design.

    • @onTargett
      @onTargett 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for responding. Yes it is an unusual file. So strange, I was able to open the file just fine and the links showed up in the links pallet, but a total blank inDesign spread. I actually re-worked the tables and did many tests to try and figure out what it was that I did wrong. All of my tests had good results, so I guess it was a glitch in the file I was working on yesterday, or maybe I wasn't holding my mouth right... lol. I guess it was just one of those undiscovered mysteries that I'll never figure out.
      Have an awesome day :)

    • @designlikeapro

      To add a basic grid, go to View->Grids & Guides->Show Document Grid.

  • @inhabitantofearth
    @inhabitantofearth 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    What if instead of the numbers on the calendar, I just wanted it to be a small shaded area (for example, like in the "BEST SELF" journal)? I want the shaded area to be where I manually write the number. I'm thinking of making a blank/undated calendar...Also, how do you make multiple calendars on a page? Do you just make multiple tables and align them accordingly?

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Instead of numbers you can place a shaded box filled with the color you like and drop the opacity down. To make multiple calendars, make the main one and then you can easily select everything and copy and paste it to make more.

    One question, can you do a video on how to do A5 inserts and adding holidays into each box like what size font is needed for A5??

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For legibility purposes, you want to go no less than 10pt. The font you choose will also determine how small you can go. Some fonts are still legible at smaller point sizes. The document size doesn't affect the appropriate font size.

      @designlikeapro  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jennifer! Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, I don't know of an automated way to add numbers for a calendar because it changes month to month. That doesn't mean a method doesn't exist though! I've always entered it in manually.

    Thank you for the tutorial! I'm brand new to InDesign, specifically for the purpose of setting up my own therapist binder! Is there a way to set this up so that I can print on 8 1/2x11 paper (vs 17x11), and still have the month across 2 pages when I open it up?

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Angelica. I'm assuming when you say binder that you want to have 8.5 x 11 on one side and another on the other side. That means you have 2, 8.5x11 sheets for one full month. You can definitely format it in the same way as an 11x17 with half your calendar on one sheet and the other half on the other. You'll be working with 2 pages instead of one landscape folded in half. To make it easier to see the calendar spread, I would start with 3 pages to your InDesign document, ignoring the first and then start your calendar spreads below that on pages 2 and 3. That way you see them side by side instead of split up.

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Latoya Morris I would leave a little more room on the left sides of each for holes. That just means you would make the boxes a bit narrower. You can always run a test print and measure to know how much space you need.

    I did everything step by step. I am wanting to do an A5 planner. When it printed it came out too big. Do I need to change it to A5 or start with an A5 document. Tabloid is too big. I’m not sure where I messed up.

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What size paper are you printing on? If you are printing an A5 doc then your dimensions need to match this to print properly. They may be different than the dimensions I use in the video.

    Can you use formulas for the dates? Like on your weekly page, would you have to make a new file for each week, or could you use a formula like in MS Excel. I know virtually nothing about InDesign so maybe that's not even possible

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Formulas like in Excel aren't native to InDesign. There could be a couple workarounds with the Calendar Wizard and or a script that would help automate that content. I don't use anything like that, unfortunately.

    I was wondering how I would go about making a week on 2 pages spread? Would it be the same concept?
    Also I will be making my monthly planner pages using this. I am still learning how to do this kind of stuff.

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The key is knowing how you want the table to lay out with your weeks and days. For example, do you want one week per spread with days of the week going down the left in rows so there is more room for text across the page? You could also put 4 rows on one side and 4 on the other with the days of the week in larger spaces and end with a notes box. Lots of options. I would do a quick online search for weekly planners to see all the various layout ideas. Then break down that layout into a table.

  • @latoya1274
    @latoya1274 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, does this print on two pages or would I need to cut in half? I will be going to a print shop for printing.

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The document in the tutorial is setup on one page that you would cut in half. It helps with design on both sides when you can see it side by side. However, you could design a planner with 8.5x11 sheets and design the left on one page and the right on the other page. Then you can print them out. Your printer can also print the pages and cut them in half or print each page separate. Totally up to you. If you want to have these pages double-sided, I would design them on their own page. It makes it easier for your printer.

    • @latoya1274
      @latoya1274 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Design Like a Pro excellent, because I definitely want to print on both sides since I'll be making a personal planner for both personal and homeschooling use. Thank you so much! This helps me out so much and is super easy to follow.

      Design Like a Pro last question. Since I will most likely be having separate pages would I need to save each one individually or can I create all my pages in one document and then export? Thank you

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually export my initial print file in one PDF from InDesign and then use Acrobat to extract each page as it's own PDF. I do this a lot for publication printing as printers usually want each page as it's own PDF.

    For anybody outside US, know that A3 is the correct size (around 16.5in on the large side).
    A3 = 2x A4 pages
    A5 is half of A4 page size

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you say you are unable to print, can you be more specific? Does the printer you are printing to print to 11x17? Most standard desktop inkjets do not and only a few copy machines can. What happens when you save the PDF? Does it look the way it does when you designed it?

    • @ms.claire5400

      I'm trying to print onto a 2 page spread for a binder. Will this work for that? It does look the same as a pdf in Acrobat. I saw the comments below to extract it in 2 pages in Acrobat but I can't figure out how to do that.

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want to side by side pages in a binder, I would create an 8.5x11 page for each side instead of creating it across one 11x17 page. That will make it easier to print. The steps are the same, you would just design one side of the calendar on one page and the other side on the other. To get a spread in InDesign you would need to have at 3 pages in the document so that page 2 & 3 are side by side. It makes it easier to design that way.

      You should be able to select the table by clicking anywhere on it once. If you double-click you will most likely end up in a cell. You can also double click into a a cell and click and drag to highlight all the cells. It depends on what you want to edit. What version of InDesign are you using? Versions older than CC have a more difficult table editing process.
