San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing Game Sample - N64

- Originally released in Arcades in 1996 and developed by Atari Games, "San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing" is the first game in the popular "San Francisco Rush" series. It was later ported to the N64 by Midway in 1997 (and met with positive reception) and to the Playstation by Climax Group in 1998 (and met with remarkably poor reception). I've never played the Playstation game, but the N64 game is pretty good. The original game was updated two other times under the names "San Francisco Rush: The Rock" and "San Francisco Rush The Rock: Wave Net". The N64 game is primarily a compilation of the first two games with arranged features and new modes.
The N64 game features seven tracks (six normal, one hidden), about a dozen vehicles (a few being hidden), a variety of cool cheats, and the other features which made the game popular in the first place (plenty of odd or fascinating shortcuts, hidden stage keys, unearthly gravity, HUGE jumps, and crazy crashes - among other things). The graphics aren't particularly good, but the stages have a lot of depth and personality. The audio is compressed quite a bit from the Arcade game to compensate for the N64's lower sound capabilities, but the good thing is that all the tunes are here and you can select them as you like during a race by pausing the game and choosing what you want. New to the N64 game is two extra modes, Practice Mode (pretty self-explanatory except there is a time limit) and Death Race (if a player crashes, the game is over). There are several options that can be configured as well, from difficulty to how much "fog" is available.

The sounds and the music were everything on this game. Whenever you sped by that video crowd and how that crowd goes wild as you take the check point for another lap.
Probably the thing i always liked the most about this game is when the guy screams ITS DANGEROUS!

Thank you so much for all that nostalgia... This was my first N64 and I played the hell out of it! There are so many secrets and shortcuts, one of my favs was an underground stunt arena that had an entrance on the side of a hill close to the water, it is very tough getting there, but worth it.
This game was the shit.

this game hooked me when it came out. it was kinda like sandbox-esque, never played a 3D free roam racing game before this one.
Rush 2 is the only exclusive to N64 and also kicks ass.

Hey there. This recording was done using actual N64 hardware. Do you have the latest P64? If so, it could be based on your computer specs (though if they are high, then the emulator probably might not play this well or settings may need to be tweaked).

i loved this game so much, but the steering was always so jerky. it was so hard for me to actually win a race as a kid, probably because the joystick was so horrible

Did anyone else venture around in this game? I'd always try to find those little shortcuts and easter eggs. There's something about a key that I remember too.
I think the keys are required to unlock things? like cars? don't know

my emulators never get the sound of this game strangely they works fine with all others games (even with Rush 2!!!) but not with this, you know a way to fix that?

Always loved this game. IMO it was the best racing game ever made. Too bad no one has taken on the challenge of creating a game like it since. There was a RUSH game for the PSP... but don't bother getting it, it was terrible... tried to be GTA... worthless.
