I can get Lost Monarch for $30 here in SoCal. It's basically my new go-to when I want something a little easier sipping than most bourbon, but still with interesting flavors
I know I’m probably on an island but I like the Pipe Dream more than the Lost Monarch. Also Fred do u know where it’s distilled? Only says bottled in Sonoma.
Their story and relationship with the redwoods makes me wonder if they could do a whiskey finished in Redwood barrels…how would that wood change the flavor?
@@FredMinnick not quite correct -- redwoods are far from endangered. Old growth maybe, but private land redwood growers could supply barrel wood. I'm a Certified Arborist and keep up on tree news. I also am familiar with Redwood Empire, having photographed a specific scene for them a couple years ago. Wish their products were available here in southern Oregon. Cheers, MDV
@@TallTreesClub I live in Sonoma County and see 3-4 trucks full of cut redwoods driving on 101 every day. Definitely not endangered, but most of the trees I've seen recently were fire damaged. Big lumber mill in Cloverdale is usually where they're headed.
Disclaimer, my fiance and I don't dress up and wear anything special to make you think we are bourbon experts, we are not. However, we do travel to buy and sample bourbon, as well as having an extensive collection. Pipe Dream is second on our list for the worst bourbon we have ever tried. I am not sure where everyone is coming from with the reviews. Perhaps we got a bad bottle? Not sure. Our starts OK, begins loosing it in the middle, and has a flat finish with a chemical cleaning after taste. It seems as though it is not finished, reminds me of white dog. The only bourbon we had that was similar was a bourbon from Lansing Michigan that was hurried and I am fairly certain they chemically cleaned the bottle rather than wash with actual bourbon. The slow aging process that Redwood Empire claims is beneficial, can work against creating a good bourbon. Less temperature variation to push and pull the bourbon in and out of the wood, the longer it takes. Blending 4 to 12 year barrels hoping you get it right? Maybe that is where they got some barrels/bottles wrong? It is not even close to Woodford or Buffalo Trace. What I would challenge everyone to do is perform a proper blind taste test against other bourbon.
Glad to see an ascot day again, Fred... Not that I prefer either way for myself... But it does seem to bode well as an indicator of the relative measure of additional stress upon you. Surely we all deserve ascot days, these days! We love your content, Fred. Thank you for it all!
thank you and there's some truth to that. when i am in a bad mood, i tend to not want to wear one. ascots = good times for me. we just put our beautiful pup of 13+ years down, so thankfully these were recorded before that.
@@FredMinnick I'm so sorry! It's been 3 years since I had that loss myself... And I still can't bring myself to getting a new pup! Those who've experienced such loss understand. They recently announced that this fall they will be releasing BIB versions of these, I can’t wait. I love the Emerald Giant, and The price point is great.
Always appreciate your detailed reviews. I'd like to hear your comments on some of the more recent Four Gate releases. I realize you've done them with celebrities but I'm primarily curious on your professional thoughts.
Great review! I just got it, bit would love to see a review of the new Chattanooga Whiskey BIB... Their first non-experimental release that is at least four years old...
For $30 it's very good. For $40 not so much. For $40 you can get Russell's 10 Year, or Cooper's Craft Barrel Reserve for $35 and they are both a touch better IMO.
Hi Fred, Happy Wednesday. I was curious if you've had a chance to try Dueling Ground's Linkumpinch's bourbon (their single barrel cask strength)? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Sent you an email some time ago with my own tasting notes so I'd be curious on yours too. Thanks!
I'm surprised that Pipe Dream was the one you've had so many suggestions for. IMHO their Lost Monarch has more going on and is my favorite of their lineup. Have you tried that one yet?
Monarch is next. In general, people been on my ass to give this brand a deeper look. tells me they're doing something right if so many fans want me to taste it.

Banana bread is spot on. Paid $35. Not mad at it!
It’s $32 bucks at Total Wine in Wisconsin, I’m new to bourbon, but I liked it.
It's a solid bourbon, especially for the price point.
Lost monarch is good stuff for the price.

Hands down one of my favorite. The monarch and the emerald giant are fantastic!!
Lost monarch > emerald giant > pipe dream. Their American whiskey blend is delicious.
My favorite is still Lost Monarch. I also think Emerald Giant is better than Pipe Dream. But I definitely agree with this review.
For me taste like pure maple syrup. Very sweet and young bourbon
Great stuff and they plant a tree for every bottle sold. Just another reason to make it your daily drinker. Cheers!
@fredminnick Redwood Empire has different cask finishes of Haystack needle.. a product with a little more age, those are really nice. IMO
chardonnay and cab sauv finishes are quite good
Haystack needle is awesome!

Hi Jimmy, it's distilled in Graton here in a Sonoma County. A small town west of Santa Rosa about 15-20 minutes.
@@shredward666 ah okay. Good to know. I was thinking it was sourced from MGP. Thanks for the info!!
Pretty sure he said in the beginning that they buy whiskeys from Kentucky and Illinois and blend it with their own.
Lost Monarch (a bourye) is the best product in their core, under-$40 range. Pipe dream is fine, but you have to try Lost Monarch.

Redwoods are endangered unfortunatelY: www.ournationalparks.us/park_issues/endangered-redwood-restoration-difficult/
that said, they do donate money to save redwoods. so they are good for the species.
@@FredMinnick I saw that on the bottle and made taking a chance on it that much easier.

I would love to try a redwood bib version in the core range.
In Cali I get this at the lowest end of that price range and it is a great value bourbon like Cooper’s Craft and Early times BIB.
Spot on review. Not terrible, but definitely not memorable.
but is it available in Connecticut?
Surprisingly…..YES! That’s why I agree with your assessment.
It’s ok I agree
Nice work

It's good but it smells and tastes like proofed down Wild Turkey 101. I'll just buy the Turkey for more proof and less money
I thought this was Rye ?
Another great review I would love to get your take on Conviction Bourbon from North Carolina
it's on the channel somewhere. but gave it decent marks.

Overpriced and overrated. Not a fan.
