Which of the Lumix S f/1.8 lens do you have, or planning to buy? And if you can ask Panasonic to create one more lens to this series, what focal length would you want to see next?
I've just got the 50mm so far as that was what I was most comfortable FOV I used on my previous system (EF-M 32mm 1.4 @ APS-C). Definitely thinking of picking up either the 24mm or 18mm next. I used to use the Tokina 11-16mm (APS-C) so I was thinking of spending some time going through my photos to see whether I used that at the wide or long end more.. think I'm leaning towards the 18mm! The 18mm also goes wider than my 24-105mm and 20-60mm so that's a big bonus there..
This is for me the perfect focus length. When I sold my 20-60 kitlens and switched to the 24-105 F4 I gained a lot, but I do feel I'm missing on the short end. I do almost 100% video with my beloved S5 so this will be on the top of my must-buy kit. Thank you for the excellent and thorough review.
all these prime lens are excellent and I really appreciate the approach panasonic has taken with the S series for the S5 camera. I'm holding out for a 28mm lens. one of my all time favourites. zen billings canada
Thank you Richard, excellent video and information!! Thanks to you, I have the first 4 Lumix f/1.8 primes, and I plan to get the 5th. Again, great work Richard!!
A 20-100 pro lens would be cool. One bright do everything lens. So far I use the 50 more than the 20-60. The 70-300 can do portrait stuff. Just don't know about the 18. Astro can't be the only reason.
When Panasonic get that AF just as good as Canon and Sony, they will wreck the competition. They already offer the best bang for the bucks cameras, it's a matter of time before they get it right and put out more high end lens too. I too am impressed with this 1.8 series of lens. Been waiting for the 18mm for a while, and you did a great job reviewing it. Thanks!
I got the 24mm because it can double as a 36mm in apsc mode. Maybe I'll get the 50mm aswell. The 18mm is a bit too close to the 24 for me to justify spending close to a 1000 euros on it. This hobby is already expensive enough as it is.
@@TheRealRichardWong Honestly. I don’t mind the price . I am willing to pay , I’ve locked my self into the S Pro lenses because I own 16-35 , 50 and 70-200. Hey michael, sorry I can't really answer off the top of my head as I tested all these lenses separately over the last two years. You could check out my reviews of each lens and look at the shaprness test results to see which one you think is the sharpest :)
@@TheRealRichardWong ok… hehe, i saw also tests of dxomark but only 85 and 35 they tested so far what i noticed, 85 had bigger score. But what i noticed when i zoom in 100% resolution of all those lenses is not perfect or maybe 24mpix of camera sensor is not enough for me haha. Maybe im a pixel peeper hehe but like to check every camera and lens 😎
Richard, I am looking for a wide lens for night club photography and videography in low light. I have the Lumix S 35mm f/1.8 I am considering the Lumix S 18mm f/1.8 for the obvious benefits of images and video looking similar to my 35mm, the similar size etc. I am also looking at the sigma f/2.8 lenses For night club photos and video in very low light does the f/1.8 offer a significant advantage compared to f/2.8?
Richard, I just received my new S5IIx. My lumix S 50 mm f1.8 lens will not autofocus in AFC mode. It will autofocus when I half press the shutter, but I want to use this camera to feed my video switch, and need AFC to work. I have tried switching between human, face/eye, and animal and human, and nothing seems to work. My 20-60 mm lens works great with the 1.1 firmware. Do you know of any solution I can try with the 50mm lens? Is there a firmware needed for it to work with the S5IIx?
hi MrMyzl1, there is no new firmware for 50 1.8. Are you saying, if you are not recording, the Autofocus doesn't work, but if you record or press shutter button then autofocus work? If that's the case, go to your settings screen, the video tab, then the "focus" menu, and "Continuous AF". Default is "Mode 1" means AF only works when video is recording, You change it to "Mode 2" and it will continuous focus all the time. see if it fixes your issue?
@@TheRealRichardWong Thank you. I tested the 50mm lens again in Movie mode, and the AFC focusing works continuously, the way I expected. But, when I put the camera into Aperture priority mode (A), I assumed the autofocusing would track my face/eye continuously in AFC mode. I have my camera connected to my ATEM video switch, and thought I could use A mode with AFC, and record to SSD using the video switch, and have the Face/eye tracking work, without recording to the camera. Is there a way to have the camera continuously AF using photo (A) mode? The face focus box is there in (A) mode, but the face is still out of focus until i half press the shutter button. Thanks again for your help.
Photo mode is not supposed to trigger autofocus continuously unless you half press the shutter button or press and hold the AF-ON button. If you want it to continuous AF, just switch to video mode and change the continuous focus to MODE 2. This way, Continous would work all the time even when not recording
Another excellent review Richard! So this entire line-up of lenses from Panasonic is curious as they're obviously aimed at video producers, yet there are several built-in design oddities. First the small size of the lenses isn't necessarily a plus in a realm where mattboxes, follow focuses, focus assistants, and flags are the norm. Even in one man band situations w/o a follow focus, having a bit of room to place your hand is nice (it's one of the big negatives of using vintage glass - they're too dang small!). But far more curious, particularly at a $1000 price point & video-centric operation, is the lack of focus clutch - a key for fly-by-wire systems. Indeed, having a fly-by-wire system at all means most higher end productions will simply pass on these lenses. Ditto that the lack of highly visible markings. And there's no IBIS in any of these lenses. I mean, it's nice that all the lenses are the same size (great for matte box use) - but the lack of other needed video features is baffling. TH-camrs will likely still avoid this system entirely until phase detect focus is implemented, leaving astro & real estate photogs as the primary people seriously interested in this particular lens. So again I'd ask Panasonic - who are these lenses aimed at?
Thank you for watching again :) I think these lenses are designed for both, not just video. A lot of photographers with mid size camera (like S5) love a small set of prime f/1.8 lenses and i personally know quite a few S5 owners bought these lenses purely for photos. Panasonic's photo AF is pretty decent, I've shot a lot of weddings, events with these lenses side by side with my Nikon and I am pretty happy with the results. For the video side, I believe this is mostly targeting videographers who shoot on a gimbal with a follow focus system.. so you also want the lens to be lightweight. Most of the videographers shooting weddings, events, and small budget music video that i work with usually shoot with a setup like that. camera + gimbal + follow focus. maybe an external monitor/recorder at most. And i feel these are users these primes are targetting on the video side. oh I would LOVE to see focus clutch, aperture ring (and even better with a switchable design that can switch between de-clicked and with clicks)..etc. but I feel we can only find these on the S Pro line of lenses. Maybe time for Panasonic to expand their Pro lens lineup!
I can def see these lenses being used on a gimbal... but again, the lack of phase detect means most people using gimbals will own either Canon or Sony cameras. I want to love these lenses and had high hopes, but no IBIS, no manual aperture, no focus clutch, no distance markings - it's a bit bizarre really. If these were cheaper - like a lot cheaper - then these shortcomings would more understandable.
Finally! I think I would choose this over the 24mm in terms of focal length. More unique and interesting. I have the 35 50 and 85. 85 I'd say is the Plainest one. Is ok though

Thanks for watching :) oh yes definitely not bad, i feel overall image quality is very solid.
15:24 Can I turn off IBIS, and then take a picture of myself walking and talking, and I will see if the corners will shake and twitch?
if you turn off IBIS, then there should be no corner warping . but the image would shake a bit
@@TheRealRichardWong In other words, if you don't want to deform and shake, you can't choose 18 1.8. Best to choose 20 or 24
Well if you hold it carefully it's probably ok. But in general yes the wider the focal length the more warpping you would have

It's 1 and 1/3 stop faster, that means you can double your framerate or lower your iso by a full stop. That can be significant.
