During an interrogation, Major Muller (Jurgen Prochnow) tortures Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe) by chopping off his thumbs.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Anthony Minghella wrote and directed this award-winning adaptation of Michael Ondaatje's novel about a doomed and tragic romance set against the backdrop of World War II. In a field hospital in Italy, Hana (Juliette Binoche), a nurse from Canada, is caring for a pilot who was horribly burned in a plane wreck; he has no identification and cannot remember his name, so he's known simply as "the English Patient," thanks to his accent. When the hospital is forced to evacuate, Hana determines en route that the patient shouldn't be moved far due to his fragile condition, so the two are left in a monastery to be picked up later. In time, Hana begins to piece together the patient's story from the shards of his memories; he's actually Count Laszlo Almasy (Ralph Fiennes), of Hungarian nobility and an explorer working with a group mapping uncharted territory in North Africa. An Englishman, Geoffrey Clifton (Colin Firth), soon joins Almasy's team; travelling with him is his lovely and spirited wife, Katherine (Kristin Scott Thomas). Katherine and Laszlo soon fall in love, which leads Laszlo to betray his friend, his country and all that is dear to him. Meanwhile, Hana and the Patient are joined by Kip (Naveen Andrews), a Sikh with a gift for defusing mines, and Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe), an intelligence agent who knows some of Laszlo's most shameful secrets. The English Patient won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress (Juliette Binoche).

Agree. He is my favorite. phenomenol actor. In the states maybe underated, but most elsewhere know him best as the great captain of das Boot. One of the best movies in my opinion. :D

Wonderful performance by Jurgen Prochnow, just as in Beverly Hills Cop II. His silence alone conveys the tension and gravity of the situation.

I may be in the minority here but I feel Willem Dafoe should have one the Oscar for best supporting actor for this scene alone.
I don't really see that tbh, but that's imo. granted his thumbs were being cut, but his cringy yell wasn't too likeable. And you can tell he's not exactly trying to pull his hands away when it's about to be cut (the germans were just holding the middle of his forearms, not the wrist etc).

He went method in this scene and really had his thumbs cut off.

It’s the worst finger that can be cut, for others it's sad but the thumb it's more damaging for pronation.
What makes this scene even more disturbing is that they had that poor nurse girl do it.

Correct, you know your Waffen SS ranks. I think it’s interesting to see them in the trop uniform. You don’t see that much of the tropics, maybe Indiana Jones or Valkyrie, but they were regular army. The German military had so many uniforms.

That SS officer was not a Major "SS-Sturmbannfurher", but was an ''SS-Standartenführer " Colonel, according to the rank color tabs on the uniform.
probably the only SS, that struggled in Afrika Korps, were the tank drivers. The only German troops, that were fighting in Africa , belonged to the Wehrmacht. The presence of SS in Africa must have been exceptional. Anyway a very good movie.
@@Faber9722 the only SS unit in North Africa was an intelligence detachment based in Algeria. No Waffen SS units fought in the theatre.
@@marks_sparks1 maybe for those foolish race and ethnic motivations that characterized that crazy government and prevented them to get in touch with African populations. But now the topic that matters more for me at least: I imagined and I guessed from the badges of the uniform (skulls) they wore that many panzer commanders belonged to the waffen SS , but that they were integrated and turned into partially as a members of the Wehrmacht.
