- Part 5 of the LS Wiring Harness Cleanup will cover the installation of the 4 Fuse Block, Main Relay, Fuel Pump Relay, and a custom 8 pin connector to support dash gauges and instruments.
The goal is to create a Stand a Lone harness that only requires 4 wires to run the engine. There will be additional wires running to the vehicle to support additional features.
Project Rowdy is a restoration on a 1979 Jeep CJ7. This LS Swap Harness is being prepared to be mated back to its original engine: 2001 Chevy Silverado 5.3L LM7 which has just undergone a full rebuild.

The very best information I have found! Doing a LSI into 1988 Chevy K1500. You have helped me understand more and I can understand what you are saying. Worked on cars all my life, always avoided wiring except for radio or fog lights. Excellent information HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE VIDEOS! I have already found the LT1 wiring diagrams and printed them, the notebook is a great idea, not only for what to do but what was done. Sir, I've watched your videos when I was in my early 20s not knowing what the hell you were doing. I'm around the corner from 28yo now, built my truck and taught myself quite a bit. I must say you've dumbed down the whole process to where I can accomplish my high school dream of ls swapping an old school car (i got a rust free 85 Fleetwood now). your efforts are much appreciated in the car community!

Thanks this was the video I needed. You got through the fuse block with a better explanation than Brandon did. Not knocking him, he's done hundreds and just went through it faster than I was comprehending.

Mike ..FYI. I found out my fuel pump from Tanks INC which is an internal tank pump requires a 30 amp fused 12 Gauge wire. I modified your original wiring directions and added another Fused hot and added a 12 gauge wire to the pump just to be sure I am getting enough power to the pump. I was afraid the original 15 amp fuse suggested would not be enough. I spend several days watching your series and appreciate all that you put out there for as all. I realize that not everyone's situation is the same .

Just pulled my 4.8 out of my truck and getting a 1980 Camaro tomorrow so I'm trying to gain as much information about 4.8/5.3 block swap as possible and this is making the electrical side of it soooo so much easier. Thank you so much I can't wait to see more.

I've just finished watching the full series on the ls stand alone wire harness for your project. You have done yourself proud, very thorough and although occasionally I felt like jumping ahead I stayed the course and watched every minute. I felt like I was in high school shop class again, good times from thirty years ago! I like the fact that you clearly labelled everything and your diagrams are well done and easy to follow. 👍

Very cool Art. I assume that yours is a Holden version. I follow another gentleman's channel (Firebird) who explained that their "GM" offerings are Holden. You should check out his recent Firebird Swap. The same approach should work with any harness: Divide and Conquer, Work and understand one section and tackle it. Anyway... I acquired an ls mid year 2017, my son and I stumbled across a truck at a local pick n pull with surprisingly it had the harness uncut together with computer, mas, gas pedal , and the gas pedal control module. I had him remove it and label it as he pulled each connector. These videos of yours sir gave him an understanding and he could visually picture where and how it went as we watched and learned how to tackle this harness. Thank you for such detailed information, I was able to use this also as a tool in my teachings to my son as we noticed yours was involved too.
Fantastic! You and your son are the exact audience that I thought about when putting these videos together. Someone who, if they could see it outlined, could use the information to confidently do it as well. What a fantastic Father/Son project. Thank you for this video. I am just starting swapping a LS into a 1969 G10 surf van. This LS technology is all new to me. Carbs and distributors are no problem. But the wiring is such a huge part of the builds... This series has been so informative!

i used a junkyard 5.3 fuse block and harness on my recent budget firebird LS swap project. it was cheap and easy just like me lol. looks like a fun project jeep anyway good work thumbs up.

I've watched most of your series because I'm in the process of doing a 93' YJ build the exact same as what you did. LS, AX15, 8.8 rear.....etc. I've been a mechanic/welder/fabricator most of my life but rarely for a living.....mostly side projects....i.e., street rods, farm equipment, motorcycles, etc. Although you admit at times throughout the videos that you're new to something or have no experience, the main (postive) factors are that you have a good general mechanical knowledge/aptitude, aren't afraid to tackle a project, check & recheck references (sources), and have a good meticulous nature/method. I think a good mechanic is someone that although he gains experience over years of doing so, he still keeps a good work ethic, process & attitude.........not getting arrogant or pridefully cocky. I've seen many types of mechanics and many ways of doing things...some good, some not so much. I learned from a lot of older guys with old school ways but I always keep an open mind to new stuff. Nice job on the build.......learned a lot......thanks ;)

@@UCanDoIt2Mike Thanks....very welcome. Yep.....more or less identical builds. I have the complete drivetrain, computer, and harness out of my 2000 Chevy 1500 4x4 with 118k on it. The frames on those models rotted pretty quick, which is my issue. It would take far more work & time to resurrect it than it would to do the Jeep project...so. I haven't picked up the Jeep as yet, but it's mine if I want it.....I was just holding off and weighing my options (which manual trans, gearing, axles, etc.) before pulling the trigger on it........your video's helped......thanks for the huge time & effort ;).........Bob

Haha!!! I am pretty good at figuring things out. I love to learn new things. Once I have it figured out in my mind, I find it easy to explain it. I try very hard NOT to come across as an expert. Hi, so i have been following along and watching you're rebuild 2 times now just so i can make sure i do my build correctly. First let me say that i absolutely love how much detail you go into. I have honestly learned more from youre videos then i did in high school. I have a 5.3l lm7 that i got from a junkyard and ill be doing a full rebuild. Thank you so much for your detailed videos. They have helped so much!!!!
Very very Cool Jacob! I would highly recommend a Rebuild guide like I used. It has steps outlined and other great information to help you along. It also lists all of the Torque specs and such. There are many good one out there, the one I used is listed in the Show More section of each of the Engine Build videos. Best of luck and have fun with yours. Mike
Thank you. The big issue that im running into is Cams. Ive been doing some research and im comming up with lots of different cams that i can use. I want a bigger cam but i dont know how big i can go for a forced induction setup before i need to get different heads. Im planning on running flat top forged pistons but i dont want to have the intake and exhaust valves hitting the pistons. Any advise on this would be greatly appreciated.
The engine sound at the beginning of your Projest Rowdy videos is what i want my truck to sound like.
Well the bigger Cam and Forced Induction is a little out of my research boundaries. We are hoping to be able to reproduce the sound that Rowdy has now with the 304, but obviously, it will be slightly different. My Cam is a medium, Streetable Cam that will match m usage.
I think i mught have found one that will work. Thank you for all your help. Ill be continuing to follow you.

I have literally watched every video of yours and I have to say two things. 1) Man you're an awesome father for getting your two sons involved. Knowledge is great but add experience with it and you'll have two very smart men! 2) I'm so glad I found someone that is as OCD about things as I am! That engine build was awesome and now these wiring videos are incredible! The detail and patience you show is very nice!

Excellent job Mike. I can tell you have a lot of experience working with wires, it shows in how you have your harness placed and your schematics. Very well thought out. I like the fact that you have all the power wires together and all the communications wires together. I also like the added connectors to simplify the engine wiring and interior wiring. I have a lot of cable splicing experience and its all in the setup and plans of any splice. It doesn't take long to have a tangled mess after wiring if you don't have a plan. I plan to use some of the techniques you showed on OverKill. I will be adding some relays for my cooling fans and possibly headlights, (Still thinking of going led on those). Great Job.

After studying them, they just bleed cool information. A buddy was building a custom Honda 500 motorcycle and I drew up an entire wiring harness for him. That was cool! Cheers!

Your videos by far are the best instructional ones I've seen. Just wish you were working on a 07 ls engine. I have 07 L92 6l80 that's going in a 1994 chevy cheyenne. The wife is not happy that it's still sitting in front of where she parks.
Thank you!!! and Literally LOL... I spent 50% of my initial effort on "Wife Buy In". You would be amazed at the similarities of the two engines and if that is the mating transmission, there is very little "Wire delete" that would need to be done. Just the 4-wire portion. Sounds like fun! The truck will have some Getty-Up!!!!!
+UCanDoIt2 Yes Mike that is the mating transmission, complete engine and trans pullout. Complete harness as well. Just haven't found a thorough guide on a GEN IV like you've done to bother with it.

+UCanDoIt2 would it be easier to use engine fuse box from donor vehicle? I've looked lt1 swap and still can't wrap my head around it.
You could use the Donor Fuse Box. But to me, that is a big black hole. Wires go into to that and I can tell what is connected to what. There is a video on channel: Agearhead4life where he simply found the Pins on the original box that required the different power sources. this is a nice configuration, as ur pink wire is feeding 3 fuses from the main relay, my question is can i add another 3 fuses ( evap system 10 amp, trans selenoid 20 amp F2 and Ignition 1 voltage 25 amp F9) to get power feed from IGN key with the same pink wire? and 16 awg is enough to to feed those fuses?
I can tell by the way you setup and asked your question that you do have a great understanding of how this works. I believe, your only limiting factor is the gauge wire (the Red from the battery and the Pink from the Main Relay to the new set of three fuses) is required to run continuous load of ALL item connected. I believe with what you listed, you should be OK.
@@UCanDoIt2Mike do you think 10 gauge red wire from batt and 12 gauge pink wire from main relay to all 6 fuse or is better to run another 16 gauge Pink wire for the extra 3 fuses?

Very detailed video series, you sir did a great job. I have one negative thing to say. The one pink wire from fuse #2 to the relay on the right, should have been a bigger guage, like 12ga. Keep up the great content.

Very good and informative vid. On the k30 crawler truck in my vids I am just going to use an old school sbc for now but in the future I plan on doing an ls swap. Will be watching your series throughout. And like you I love wiring schematics. Love seeing how everything talks to each other and how the controls work and everything. Keep up the very good work.

Wanted to mention the way the lingo at least used to be for ignition vs accessory.
It used to be that accessory was things that on older cars would work if the key was turned back, like the radio would work but things like turn signals and wipers wouldn’t.
Ignition2 was the other things like windshield wipers but how they differed from regular ignition was that when you turned the key further into the crank position they would not work whereas the actual ignition obviously needed to still function. So on an automatic trans car if you would put the car in something other than park or neutral then put the ignition switch in the crank position you will notice that things like the radio and heater fan won’t work therefore leaving more voltage available for cranking and spark. This may come handy when you connect the actual switch because ignition and ignition2 can appear similar unless you check them during crank. Hope that makes sense and maybe helps in some way, enjoying your videos greatly. Cheers.

Your videos are even better than the one fe lt1 swap. I’m in the middle of tackling an ls swap myself. I’ve already watch 1-4 several times to get comfortable with this. I see this is an older video how has the been doing. Any issues you come across? My ls is goin in a falcon.
It is an older video, but I still monitor the comments. Many thank for the compliment. I am still working on the vehicle that this engine will be dropped in. Many others have commented that they have completed their install and are enjoying cruising in their new ride. Had to overcome a few obstacles but am working again on my project. Hey i just want to start off of by saying you made diving into my ls swap that much easier!! Your videos are exactly what a beginner into the ls world needs to get going! Thank you for taking all the time you did to make this videos!
I did run into an issue i wanted to see if you could clear up, after cleaning up my harness i ended up with a pink wire that i earlier labeled "ignition voltage" and another pink wire coming from a pink connector. I have no clue where this pink connector goes to and i have connected all of the other plugs including build and connect my 4 wire fuse block with the 2 relays. Any information or pointers helps. Thanks again!!
So I think I can only answer you with a couple of logical thoughts since I cannot see what is going on. All Pink wires are switched voltage. One example of where you would have 2 extra pink wires than I did is if you kept both rear O2 sensors. You would have had to add that to your Pink switched wiring setup. If you can determine (following the wires or thru continuity testing where the wires go, you might be able to determine what you need to do with them. If they enter the harness and run back into the harness, they must go to a connector that you left in the harness and it would be safe to say they will need switched power..... add them to one of the existing fuses. These are just a few thoughts off the top of my head. Hope it provides some good guidance. Cheers!!!!!

Yes! Very! Yours is very clean and laid out logically/minimalistic. I'm about half done routing my harness. I'm doing mine while the harness is laid out in the engine pay so I can hide everything. I'm going to land all my power and functions like you did in your print so I can use your print as my own for installation and t/shooting later down the road. Thanks again
And also....you ran both bank of injectors together on the same fuse. What amp is the fuse. I don't know if one 15amp will do both sides. Gm originally uses one 15amp fuse for each set of injectors
According to the source that I used to put this together, a 15 Amp fuse is what is needed. Remember that all 8 Injectors fire at different times!
