  • Selling Steam Keys and Digital Game Items on eBay is something I've tried a few times and I thought I should make a video about it because I got two negative / neutral feedback events on eBay in one week by selling these items, plus lots of scammers.
    I made another video specifically about selling Roblox items because of the response I got to this video, you can find it here: • Don't Sell Pet X and A...
    But first, some DISCLAIMERS
    1) I am not being paid by or promoting any of the companies mentioned in this video, nor do I represent any of them in any way, nor do they endorse me / this video / any of the shenanigans I talk about.
    2) I am a talking head on the internet and this video is for edutainment purposes only.
    3) There are some extremely grey areas in the realm of Steam keys, digital codes, online game accounts and in-game items, please check the T's & C's of whichever companies / platforms you are selling on or buying from or harvesting game items from. You will probably find that they don't allow whatever it is you are thinking of doing.
    4) I have been scammed repeatedly when selling Steam keys and in-game items on eBay; it is inherently unsafe and you will probably get scammed too.
    Some of the things mentioned in this video are:
    -Buying steam keys from G2A and other similar websites like Kinguin, Eneba, CDkeys.com et al to resell on eBay.
    -Buying game accounts or in-game items from websites like Player Auctions to resell on eBay
    -Selling in game items on eBay which were earned through playing, special events or by buying in-game currency at a discount and buying game items with it to resell IRL for real money.

    so basically you stopped selling keys because of the scammers and low profit and ebay policies? there are places aside from ebay for selling/arbitraging/reselling keys, why not them if that's an ebay problem for you?

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, yes that's right, the problem is that I was buying keys from those other sites where they are cheap and selling them on eBay for quite a decent profit, buying them from one cheap place and trying to arb them on another cheap place didn't seem like a good idea, so I stopped. THanks for the comments though ;)

    I am confused about shipping the “item” and proving that the customer received their item. For example, obviously there will be no shipping label so do I just have to rely on the customer to mark the item as shipped?

      You can mark it as dispatched in eBay and then screenshot or record a short video of the delivery - it would then be up to the buyer to open a case to say it didn't arrive. I made another video about this which you can watch here: th-cam.com/video/_dLru6z-Niw/w-d-xo.html

      Hi, I've not come across this issue before, I either put 'Collection Only' or 'Free Shipping' and just send them. You might be able to ask the buyer to confirm or leave you +ve feedback? I suspect that eBay would pay out within 21 days unless the buyer opens a case against you. If your account is new or you are new at selling, they might hold your fees for the first few months or something. Good luck!

    Hello Good morning, I have a question. I’m new to eBay I sold some codes this Week and I choose local pickup they paid me but eBay got funds on hold, didn’t know you need to scan QR or put 6 digital code to confirm delivery I texted seller to send pick up codes but not sure if they comprehend. The customer did texted they got the items. I see they paid but I can’t mark as delivered would I still be able to get funds ? Even if it’s not mark delivered since they paid, Thanks

      hi, I've never had that issue, but i've read that if you don't have the code they release the funds after 21 days, assuming the buyer doesn't open a case / refund against you. Best bet is to try texting the buyer again, with BIG LETTERS, short. sentences. small words ;) or just wait for the 21 days. Good luck😁

      Hi, this is a bit of a grey area because whilst it's not against eBay Ts & Cs (that I'm aware of) it is probably against Microsoft Ts & Cs so it might be possible for them to VeRO you, but I don't know if they do that. I would be wary of selling expensive bundles because you will get scammed by shady buyers. (£10+) Also there used to be different rules in different regions - I know someone who sold MS office but only in Germany (I think there must have been some loophole) and did very well until eBay asked to see their wholesale agreement / receipts to prove they were a legit seller. Then they got banned. For this reason, I would try Kinguin, Player Auctions or G2A

      As they have no problem with selling of dubiously sourced material. Good luck :)

      Hi, after I made this video I started looking further and further into it, in other online games like Final Fantasy and Old School Runescape - it is a very deep rabbit hole and I might do a whole video on it because it is such a detailed topic. To answer your question, it depends on the game, but the BIG sellers mask the IP of their computers using proxies, they use multiple accounts and in some cases they use bots too. They will often complete the transactions using 'mule' accounts which transfer funds from big accounts to buyers who paid with real money. To not get banned, you have to make sure that the game owner doesn't see you sending messages about trading things for real money, but also not show your account details in your listing and make sure the people who buy from you are happy and don't get upset enough to report you. If you advertise on more niche sites like Playerauctions, that is less popular than ebay but full of people who are OK with trading for real money. On paper it's not a very sustainable business model, but in reality it is HUGE business and there is a lot of real money being traded in the game. I hope this helps :)

      @@unitednoobies898 As it happens, i have just recorded a video on this very topic, so I will be uploading soon :) There are also different types of BIG seller - but most of them use things called Proxies to hide the IP address of their PC(s) so that they don't get banned / barred from even starting. There are companies which run bot farms, where they use software to run multiple instances of each game and sell the accounts, gold and items on places like playeraucitons. There are some companies in economically challenged countries like Veneuzuela (where they are having an economic melt down) where they have teams of people grinding manually and selling the accounts etc, then there are big companies which don't want the risk of being banned / scammed so they just arbitrage the accounts / gold by offering low buy prices to the people who bot / grind and higher prices to the general public / retail. It's quite a deep rabbithole and it will not be a short video ;) Thanks for watching!

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      HI, I'm not sure which fees you mean - if they are eBay fees, you will struggle to avoid them (better to add them to your price) and trying tends to get you banned. If you mean international postage, you can either put 'Free Postage' international and domestic, or you can put 'collection only'; both have their merits and drawbacks. • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@terencespragg5708 Hi, I've not experienced this because I stopped selling this type of item, but I'm not sure that the fee and the postage method are connected - if it is a Fee it might be for Tax - that might be because of Brexit or the fact that the overseas buyer is in a different territory. The delivery is a different issue - I always put free postage and just 'marked as dispatched' without adding any tracking and eBay was fine with it. With collecting in person, the buyer will sometimes get a code, they can either send the code or maybe just pretend that you will collect it in person, even if you are on the other side of the planet? Not sure what to do with that really, but I would try putting free domestic and international postage and making sure you don't tick eBay GSP (global shipping) as they will charge the buyer and expect a package from the seller. Hope this helps, good luck!

      Hi, last time I checked, the cost of doing a classified ad was prohibitively expensive, so I think the best thing to do is look for the thing you are selling and find someone who has ok feedback witha decent number of sales.
      Your best bet is probably 'Computer and video Games' but then opt out of the discounted eBay shipping in your account settings, if there's no way to list without a shipping fee. @JamesDoesThings  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi, that's a strange one - did you put an option for postal delivery in the listing? Or did they open a case for a non-delivered item? If it is just a message from a buyer (or prospective buyer) in the message system I would explain that there is no tracking number because it is digital delivery and they should already have the item but you (have or will) record the delivery on screen with streamlabs OBS or similar software etc or if it is delivered by in-person trade then explain it to them. If it is something you have already sent to them then it sounds like your buyer is either a moron or a scammer - sadly these two types of problem buyers made up around 50% of my customers for virtual items, which is why I stopped selling them. I think I will be doing another video on this because I've had a lot of messages on this topic, including people saying that they've been banned completely from selling on eBay, despite selling honestly, due to VeRo rules on eBay. Good luck!

      Hi@@ammaressam9619 yes, when you create the listing you can choose a shipping option or remove them all and put as collection only, but I wasn't sure if the buyer was asking for tracking or if it was eBay. When I sell, eBay gives me the option to add a tracking number, but you don't have to use it, so I would just ignore that dialogue box unless it is stopping you from completing the transaction - using 'Mark as Dispatched' usually works. You can't really give a tracking number for digital items, so if eBay is asking then maybe change the shipping type to one with no tracking, or if it is the buyer just explain that you record a video of every delivery in-game maybe? I just checked on eBay in the UK and people are selling them in Electronics > Computers and Networking > Software > Business and Office - there is a guy with 100% feedback with 400+ reviews selling Office 365 keys.
      It is a grey area because if you sell a lot of them you might be asked by eBay for receipts to prove that you are a legit business seller etc and if you are dropshipping them from retail (like G2A or Kinguin) or can't show that you are allowed to distribute them eBay will give you a hard time.

      I would usually put items for sale either with free postage or as collection only, with no postage. Definitely no eBay Global Shipping Program or paid International postage, but you could put free international shipping. This is mainly because if you charge postage and the buyer decides to scam you, there won't be any proof of postage to show, which will reinforce the buyers' claim. If you did a 99p auction with say £9.99 postage and the buyer wanted to 'return' it, in theory you wouldn't have to refund the postage, but the chances of that happening are quite slim, vs someone scamming you more directly by saying you never sent it. Hi, I've been doing a lot more research on this and sadly there are a lot of problems with selling game items, but it depends on the items, the game and where you sell them. The main risks are getting banned by the game and getting scammed by the buyer. 1) If you want to avoid being banned by the game, make sure you don't give away your identity in your screenshots and consider making the transfer with a mule / alt character. 2) About half of the people buying my items had brand new accounts (which is usually a red flag on ebay) so just remember you are more open to scams from buyers on eBay than on a platform like Player Auctions. Have a look at other people who sell the thing you want to sell and see if they give you any clues as to how they do it securely ie videoing the transaction, getting a phone number / text confirmation from them. They do hold it for returns or open cases though. As far as eBay is concerned, you can sell Roblox items, but I don't think Roblox like it and there is always the possibility that either Roblox or the maker of a specific game might ban or suspend you if they suspect you are doing it. Hi@@yusufrahman9584 , it doesn't really change much because the way refunds, work (in my experience as both a buyer and a seller) is that eBay will send the buyer a return label with tracking once they open a return request, so when the item has been posted and shows up in tracking as 'delivered' (ie returned to the seller's address) then eBay sends the buyer their refund. If ebay were holding your money then it goes back to the buyer at that point, if ebay had already paid your money out to you (as the seller) they will put a hold on your funds for that amount and if you don't make any more sales they will probably debit it from your account at the end of the month. I had this recently and they had already paid me the funds, so they just put future sales money on hold until it came to more than the amount I owed them, but then the buyer found the item (delivered to a neighbour) and they closed the case and the hold on my funds was lifted. Hi, great questions, here's the answers:
      1) I would list them in the VIDEO GAME MERCHANDISE category with Free Shipping, both domestic and international, but not with eBay global Shipping Program. You can do local pickup, but I'm not sure it will show the listings in other countries, but maybe it will.
      2) Free Shipping / Postage - if you put some kind of non-tracked shipping for both domestic and international and put same-day dispatch, with no fee or click the 'Free Shipping' option, no-one should have to pay any shipping. When you sell your item, eBay will prompt you to pay for whatever service you selected (via them), but maybe not if you have an option to pick something like "OTHER 24 HOUR COURIER" or similar, ie not a named service. You can ignore the eBay service and go to Order Details to find where you need to send your item, then click 'Mark as Dispatched' once you've sent it. For anything over £10 / $10USD I would record your screen using OBS or SLOBS etc.
      3) eBay will hold your first funds for 21 days, but the only way you will lose that money is if you get scammed. Even if you got paid straight away and then got scammed, eBay would hold the same amount of money from you and just take it off the next sale you made.
      Remember that eBay will always side with the buyer, so even if you record your screen, eBay might still go with the scammer, unless they have an account which is brand new and/or looks suspicious on their backend.
      Hope this helps! Good luck :)

      @@kurokami9428 OK that's interesting, I don't have that. I have boxes I can put the size and weight of things in, but I can ignore them too, as they are optional. I had a quick look on google and it says you can opt out of the eBay shipping discounts, which should make that problem go away, but I don't have the same options in my account as I am in the UK - I went into 'My Account' or 'Seller Account' and found the settings there and there are some options to opt in or out of things like GSP and other shipping options, so you might find it there. If not, google / TH-cam "How to Opt Out of EBay Shipping" and you should find your way around that. Good Luck!

    hello james can u tell me how to ship the virtual items what should I do ?

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there's a few ways to do it, depending on the item in question. For game keys, it works best via email or the ebay message system, but I used to get scammed a lot that way (or at least attempted scams) unless it was low value items. For in-game items you need to either do a live trade in-game unless the game has a mail system like Pet Sim X or WoW. Another way people do it is to embed a link to a thing in a PDF (like Canva/ Notion templates) and then send the pDF to the buyer - you can automate this on Etsy. Hope this helps!

      @@WinnerWolf5050 You can either do "Collection Only" or free shipping, but I don't know if Collection only limits who can see your listing. When I was doing it I think I chose next day delivery (same day dispatch) and then I disabled eBay GSP (global Shipping) and added international shipping myself (also free P&P). That way all of the shipping is your responsibility (no involving eBay) and it's free and you can just hit 'mark as dispatched' when you've sent / traded the item.

      Hi, there used to be a site which will autosell codes for you via ebay but I've forgotten the name of it because it was a few years ago, but I remember it was only $0.1 USD per code as long as you stored 100+ codes with them. I didn't use it because I had such a high proportion of scammers, but I have bought from people who use it.

    I need your help i just got scammed for a virtual item on roblox he isnt responding anymore and it was a pretty rare pet. Spend over 100 euro. His account is really nice has a custom profile picture that matches his name. Alot of positive feedback 3.2k sold items 2 year active. But what can i do now can u pls help me will ebay give my money back? Since i never got the item.

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      OK, if you are the buyer, eBay will probably give you your money back. 90% probability of an eBay refund, your credit card / bank company can also help if eBay don't - they might not give you all of the money but you will get most of it back, and that's only if you did something wrong, you would still get 90% of the money.
      1) You need to check that you gave all the right information, like if they asked for your username - did you spell it right? In some games on Roblox you have a Roblox name AND a Pet Sim 99 name which can be different, so if they asked for those, check that you have all the evidence on your side, check that you sent the right details.
      2) Next, you need to tell eBay that the item has not arrived and this will 'Open a Case' against the seller - if he doesn't respond within 5 days, you will automatically get your money back.
      3) Some things to consider - is there a timezone difference between you and them? How long has it been? hours or days? Do you need to trade it or can it be in-game mailed?
      Also, maybe that seller doesn't have that thing and they are basically drop-shipping it, by listing it and then going to get it after someone has bought it - it's not good practice, but they might still get you the pet. If they did that, they should just be honest and not ignore your messages.
      If the seller is a proper genuine seller, they will message you quickly and resolve the issue quickly.
      Sometimes it's good to check their feedback in more detail too - is it seller feedback, or did they buy lots of cheap items for pennies and get lots of feedback?
      If you are convinced that the seller scammed you and eBay don't help (this is unusual) then you can contact your bank or credit card company and tell them you have been scammed - then the seller has to send the bank / credit company PROOF that they sent it to you or the details you gave them.
      This will usually cost eBay and/or the seller a minimum of $15 / EUR just for the bank to get involved, but you will get more money back if you have good records of what you sent to who and when.
      Good luck, I hope that you get your money or your pet soon :)
