    Regarding the switcheroo James, Blackbelt Barrister recommends that you film the return package from all sides whilst saying out loud that you expect this package as a return to have an IPhone10 inside returned by A N Other. Then film yourself opening the package. Blackbelt Barrister said that if they take you to court, then you can produce the filmed evidence. You can of course, also send it to E-Bay.

    I’ve seen almost all of these scams in the last two years selling as well. It’s a much larger problem when you are a new seller or selling items over $200 or under $10. The under $10 scams are so silly lol.
    I’ve found that using these methods significantly cut down on being scammed:
    1) If you’re selling items over 200, use priority mail (for speed and insurance) and always use Signature on Delivery.
    2) Ship same day if you can. The faster the item gets to the buyer, the less of a chance they can scam during shipment.
    3) Offer returns. Doesn’t matter if 30 days or more. Block any buyers who return items as well (after you receive the item).
    4) ONLY ship to address that is listed. If the buyer asks to change address after paying, immediately cancel, refund then block the buyer.
    5) Block all buyers asking multiple questions before purchasing an item.
    6) Take pictures of all serial numbers and identifying labels if available. That way if you get a return that’s the wrong item you can take a quick photo of the wrong markers and report it to eBay.
    If you’re a Top Rated Seller and offer returns, eBay will actually defend you on many cases including the switcheroos and chargebacks.

      I agree with most of your points there @sho, especially about the listed address, but I found typically my 99p items and similar are too cheap for scammers to bother with! When I used to sell games it would be the £10+ games which were targeted, but no-one ever scammed me for a £2.99 DLC or retro game :) thanks for sharing!

    I feel that I have been personally scammed. I had a very expensive cannister set that some one overseas purchases. Before they purchased they were asking alit of questions about one of them. The cannister shipped and then I get a message for a refund as the exact cannister out of five that they had asked all the questions about was the cannister that was shown in the picture as broken. They were all packaged very well.

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get really nervous when people ask me lots of questions, or haggle over stuff that is already quite cheap - I've even been deliberately slow to answer the 3rd or 4th question in the hope that they will buy from someone else, just because you know they are going to be either a scammer or someone who is going to complain about something tiny. I hope you didn't end up too much out of pocket! Thanks for sharing

    I had a claim "I never got it" even though I had tracking that showed it delivered. I won that case, then the person back charged on their credit card so I went through it yet again. In the end, I won, but it was a lot of work.

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I get an awful feeling in my stomach when I get one of those 'Where's my item' messages - I've found that using a label printer drastically reduced the amount of claims I get (even when it's not tracked, it just looks a lot more official, like it *might* be tracked), but there's no way to combat scammers like that unless you use tracking in the way that you did. I'm glad you won, shame you had to win twice but thanks for sharing! 😀

    I realized that you get scammed a lot but you've also got a realize that people who buy things get scam 2 like. I bought some shampoo that was discontinued that I really like paid a high dollar for it. And someone put half shampoo 1/2 water in it. It was so running. And that's the way they sold it.
    So people on both sides should be careful about what is being sold And being scam.

    Yea seen those scams the switch on return really ticked me off tho. . Sent back an item total different color. And it was expensive. They claimed it was damaged which we already knew that it wasn’t due to the way we pack . We almost sought out prosecution on it.🤷‍♂️

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I get properly scammed (or attempted) and I've got the person's details I always report it to the authorities - in the UK there is an online system for doing this and if you actually try reporting it to the police in the traditional way they point you to the website anyway. I've had to do it a few times and they never take it any further, but it helps the police to build up a picture, so if 10 people report them, they can see a pattern building and do something.

    @jonm4501 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Here in the States, buyers expect a tracking number for everything, no matter how small. On the Item Not As Described, if I am suspicious they're scamming me, I will tell them to return it, which cuts down on 80% of the issues (they never return it). I only had the switcheroo occur one time. That may be because of the nature of the items I sell. As long as the address change is communicated through eBay before shipping, I don't see the problem.

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jon, that's interesting, as tracking is twice the price here in the UK, so for low-value items it's prohibitively expensive. I agree that offering a return is a great way to stop people trying to haggle / scam after the sale, but I'm not so sure about the address changing - I think that even if you get a new address from a buyer in writing on the eBay message system, plus tracked postage to that address, I'm not sure you'd be covered by eBay because it's not the address on the invoice. If they change the invoice address ie their address first and it is updated within eBay then I wouldn't have a problem. Not sure how eBay would see that and it might be worth checking their T's and C's (and making a new video!). Thanks for sharing! 😁

  • @ShortCrypticTales

    you should and could address all these on all of your listings pages as terms of sale, or all sales are finale, and I only ship to confirmed address also doing a vid or photos of you packaging the item with time stamp

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Possibly Mike and thanks for sharing - I think having solid T's & C's on your listings and sticking to those rules definitely helps, however, the fact remains that eBay depends on buyer confidence for its business model and there are a lot of anecdotal incidences of eBay siding with the buyer, even when it was statistically improbable that they were telling the truth.

  • @ART55ODYSSEY
    @ART55ODYSSEY ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Before finalizing the purchase, the buyer requested a waiver of the tax amount, stating that they would not proceed with the payment otherwise. Despite my initial listing not including any discounts, In response, I decided to offer a discount to accommodate their request. Its against eBay policy for buyer to do such things but eBay doesn't care
    Following the completion of the transaction, the buyer received the item but later contacted me with concerns about missing parts. I want to emphasize that I took every precaution to ensure that all components were included, as outlined in the original eBay listing. I sent photos but eBay didn't looked it. But eBay issued them refund putting me in minus .I couldn't dispute it because their page for dispute couldn't load .Very upset with eBay because its not protecting sellers. We should start a class action against eBay as a sellers.

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @MiaART27, transactions like this make me want to give up on eBay, but don't! It will get better :) What you described is the 'Not as Described' loophole and I don't think eBay will ever change anything because their business model depends on buyer confidence above all else. When things like this happen to me I do the following: 1) Offer a partial refund to prevent a return 2) Accept the return and take the hit in postage / shipping costs and then relist it again, maybe with some BLOCK CAPS in the description about the missing bits. The last time something like this happened to me I actually stopped selling that particular type of thing altogether because I found that those items attracted scammers and morons, which can be hard to defend against with eBay policies. Good luck with your future sales :)

    Is there a scam where they offer the same in a 'best offer,' as what I've listed as the 'buy it now' price? I'm a total newbie, and I've literally just listed by first three items -- a person with NO feedback has offered 10$ on an item that's already listed at that price . . . what can they do to me if I accept this?

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for sharing! Sounds dodgy to me! I'm always suspicious of behaviour like that - if you click on their name you can see when they joined - if it was in the last day or two that is an extra red flag - depends on the item, but the trouble with items of around $10 / £10 is that it's not quite expensive enough to warrant spending money on tracked postage (unless you add it on as an extra) but it's just valuable enough to be worth scamming you for - I had a lot of pokemon cards 'go missing in the mail' in this price range. If you can afford to wait for the cash then I would wait for a less suspicious buyer and maybe remove the 'offers allowed' setting and just reduce the price every week if it doesn't sell. If you already allowed for tracked shipping then you should be safe against most scams. Good luck :)

      Hi, yes I think it does, especially for the more expensive items. I think it's a cumulative thing, so if you record the packaging, and you have tracked delivery, and you have good feedback etc it paints a picture for eBay that they can't ignore in a dispute.

    I had something similar happen to me, someone used the credit card of another person and their home address to open an account on ebay. They purchased my item and while it was in transit they redirected the package to a different address.
    Now the person who had their identity stolen has filed a dispute with their bank and ebay is investigating. I called ebay and they told me not to worry, if the bank wins I will still be protected under seller's protection, and they will pay the bank and me. There's no way for that to happen the item sold for $8,300 so they'll have to payout $17,000 total.
    Does anyone have experience with this kind of scam and how it's resolved by ebay?

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, that's a big scam! I've not seen a scam where the item was redirected mid-transit before - I think if you can prove you sent it to where it was supposed to go (ie the address eBay gave you), then you should be covered - if you redirected it on their behalf then you might be in trouble, but if the scammer redirected it themselves using the postal system then the real owner will be covered by their bank / credit card and you should be covered by eBay. If eBay see that there are a lot of this type of scam going on, they might change policy regarding changes of address in transit or how people verify their address. Good luck, and thanks for sharing!

    Hi James i’m in a bit of a pickle I sold luxury watch on eBay and I described it as being new as I bought the watch new and didn’t wear it come with the original price tag warranty card still in warranty travel case and original box it put it straight in storage as I had other Watches that I wore more now the customer got the watch five days before putting in a return request and in their return request, they said that they received the watch that day when putting in the return request and said they have worn it for a couple of days and saying about the bracelet having issues with it I have proof from Royal mail that it arrived five days before and a picture of it being delivered to the address. Now the customer is saying that they have worn the watch meaning they worn it for five days and now saying that there is something wrong with the bracelet. Now with them wearing it I don’t know what they have done with. They have knocked it banged it and I have no idea whether they’ve got the Links done professionally or not. They may have got someone to tag with the bracelet or they may have done it themselves, causing it to break. I do not know. Now the thing that worries me is he is a new seller with only a couple of feedback from buying from other sellers plus if there was anything wrong with the watch he could just go to the local store and get it done completely free. I even rang up the store that I bought the watches from and they said if he comes in they could possibly get it fixed that day or send it back to the manufacturer for completely free Plus if I have to send it back if eBay does not agree with me then I will have to send it back to the store that I originally bought it from to get it authenticated which can take up to a month, then have to fix the watch plus he has worn it which will decrease the value of the watch. I am just hoping that eBay sides on my side as I have messaged the seller that he can send it back to the manufacturer to get it fixed. At this moment in time he has not messaged me as I messaged him yesterday and now it’s today today

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, that's a lot to take in - first thing's first - eBay will side with the buyer most of the time, unless it is a clear case of them acting fraudulently. Even then, they might still not side with you! If they opened a case / official return request, you will probably be better off accepting the return and then trying to issue a partial refund to the buyer, especially if they have damaged it. If you ignore the request as a business seller, eBay will refund them the money and they will still have the watch. They can also do a chargeback if they used a credit or debit card. If you are a private seller and listed it as 'no returns' but said it was NEW and in perfect condition and they are disputing this, eBay will side with them and either force you to accept the return or refund them anyway if you ignore them/him. If they have damaged it or switched it out for a fake, you will probably need to phone ebay to stop them from issuing a refund. Some refunds are automatic, especially when the buyer gets a return label via eBay with tracking, so that is something to watch out for.
      If they have opened an official request for a return, I would accept it and maybe they will send it back, maybe they won't. If they have only messaged you, you could ask them for more details / photos / explanations about the issue (but nicely) and see if you can resolve it / convince them it is fine - they might also give up after a few messages - depends on how much it means to them. Failing that I would accept the return and see what happens next. I hate dealing with buyers like this but I often find that taking a loss is often quicker and easier than a protracted battle (where eBay is unlikely to be on your side) and which could still result in a loss of money and negative eBay feedback. I hope this helps, good luck!

      Your post is confusing. Is the buyer of the watch also a seller?

  • @Zhoaten
    @Zhoaten ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In my limited experience, there is NOTHING you can do to win against a credit card chargeback. I've had 4 occur on FB Marketplace and 1 on my own website. Despite having tracking AND messages from my customers, I lost all 5 cases. Although FB Marketplace doesn't even allow sellers to challenge them, so it's an auto loss on that website. I guess your chances just depend on the website where you received the chargeback. It's horrible because on top of having your product stolen, you also get hit with a $20.00 chargeback fee as well.

    • @JamesDoesThings
      @JamesDoesThings  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Zhoaten, thanks for sharing that, I thought the reason I lost mine was mainly down to not having tracked postage, but clearly not! Even then, I recouped some of the money, although it was a loss overall. When I was buying and selling a lot of coins, many of the dealers who had expensive gold coins in stock would only deal with people paying by bank transfer, which is the only safe way that I am aware of.

Shame you couldn't get a refund via eBay, especially as it was their fault, but speaking to them direct does take a while and if it's not worth that much you probably did the right thing in letting it go. Been on eBay for 12 years and more and more ppl. are trying to scam. Just got a women’s dress instead of a men’s suit jacket. Even the weight on the label is 1 lbs 5 oz. , but with the dress and packaging it weighs 13oz. So something is not right and I opened a case and hopefully get my money back and don’t care anymore on getting that suit jacket. I had a charge back, but eBay coverages it. But they or their family member may have that same item.
    eBay is now a pain and not bc of these bad setters and buyers, but bc ebay don’t seem to keep up with changing the rules to protect the honest members and make you waste so much time even if it’s not a scam matter EBay seems to be going the self help route to cut cost and keep the cost down.

      2 time I had returns and the damage was caused by the buyers on 2 different jackets. One claimed there was a hole in the pocket lining. And the other said the thread is coming out of one of the armpits and it was a denim tough jacket and it wax cut but the buyer. So my point is the scammers are getting smarter and knows most ppl. will not take photos of those areas and if so, it would take like an hour just to take photos on one item. Oh and after you have to refund them and pay for a return shipping and loose money on damage jackets, you would have done much netter giving the jackets to someone for free.
