One of my best thrift store scores was a thermal label printer that looked like it'd never been used, still in the original box and with all the cords still sealed in their little baggies.

    One thing the local post office workers told me is that for an item to go as a "package" as opposed to a "letter" was the 3/4-inch thickness. I sell a lot of flat items like collectible magazines, comic books, etc, that often go in envelopes. They advised me to insert a couple pieces of cardboard to make it over 3/4 inch thick without adding much weight.

    • @jeremiahblundon4877
      @jeremiahblundon4877 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      As a Postal Employee I can confirm this. The reason it matters is I believe tracking for a flat (magazine)/letter is a fixed rate; usually around $8-$9, as it's not based on weight but putting tracking on something that doesn't normally come with tracking. So making it thicker to qualify it as a package could reduce shipping costs. This is my understanding as a Carrier, a Clerk would be able to give you a more specific on prices for a letter/flat. To my understanding the only options for tracking on letters/flats is Certified which needs a signature for $8 or a small envelope that has a tracking number on it and you put your letter in the envelope, which costs around $9.

      @@madmax8620 tracking for a letter is more expensive. You’re paying a flat rate of $8-$9 as a letter for tracking even if it’s going down the street. Making it a package can make it cheaper to ship by almost half the price.

    Great video! I'm wanting to sell items on eBay, but my biggest question is how to set pricing. I work in e-commerce, and we ship on our client's FedEx or UPS accounts, so having to worry about boxes and shipping prices is not important. I'm going to check out your other video "Shipping is Confusing" to see what content you have there.

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I arrive at pricing by looking for some info on ebay. First, I'll search for the item to see if there are active listings. I take note of how many are listed. Second, I'll filter the search results by SOLD. I compare how many are sold to the number listed. This gives me a sell-through rate. The higher the sell-through rate, the faster i can hope to sell it. Also, I look to see the range of prices the item sold for. I adjust my price considering the condition of mine and how long I'm willing to wait to sell it.

    • @JohnProthero
      @JohnProthero ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheChaChingKing Thanks. I guess I was too vague in the word "pricing", because I meant the shipping cost. I would assume that using USPS and their flat rate cartons, most of that is pre-determined. I know that UPS and FedEx use Dimensional Shipping, which can cost a lot for a large package, even if it's light-weight.

      I probably just wasn't clear. It just would not fit in the smaller box. So, I cut out all of that trying to keep the length of the video watchable. But, it just wouldn't go in the smaller box, at all. The bigger box seemed cheaper because it weighed one pound less than my estimate.

      @@TheChaChingKing Next question: When you create a listing, are you entering shipping weight for a more accurate amount or just guesstimating at the approximate cost?

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of the time, we know the shipping weight just from experience. The rest we make an educated guess. For example, i know if an item fits in my 12x9 ziplock, it will fit in either my poly mailer or the priority padddd flat rate. So, ultimately, on those items i only need to know if it's under or over a pound. If I really can't estimate it, I weigh it.

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It ships at a flat rate based on distance instead of weight. I think it is the 2 pound rate regardless of how much it weighs. So, if I had something that weighed 7 pounds shipping to Hawaii and it would fit in the Regional Rate A box, it would be far cheaper than just shipping in at the regular weight. Does that make sense? It's not always cheaper, but really can be.

    Ive watched this video 3x and will probably watch it another 3. Its very helpful. My main issue right now and choosing the price for shipping on my listings. I saw you last video where you talk about different weights and pricing, but how do you know how much its going to weigh ahead of time, if you dont know which box you are using. Also, do the flat rate boxes always have the same price for their assigned size? Thank you Scot for all the help. Because of your channel, I am actually taking the plunge of starting my resale journey.

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are so kind! I truly appreciate it. I know a lot of the weights just from experience. But you can always weigh the item and add some for the box and packing. It won't be exact, but it will probably be very close. There are two types of flat rate USPS boxes. The true flat rate ones, like the padded flat rate and the medium flat rate, have a specific charge regardless of where they are going or how much they weigh. The Regional Rate A & B boxes charge 2 pounds and 5 pounds respectively. So, they vary some depending on where they are going. So, if you have an item under 15 pounds that fits in a Regional Rate A box, it'll get charged at the 2 pound rate. And, above all else, it WILL get easier with more experience. Don't be afraid to make a mistake. I still make mistakes. But I'm smarter with every one.

Between 8 ounces and 16 ounces, I charge $5.99. If it's over a pound but fits in a USPS padded flat rate envelope, I charge $8.99. If it doesn't fit in the padded flat rate, I usually aim for the Regional Rate A box and charge $11.99.

      No, not that I can see. Just keep in mind, the $3.55 isn't your total cost. You also have the cost of the mailer, printing the label and the eBay fees for the shipping. So, probably another 1 or so on top of the $3.55. So, the other prices you are seeing take those things into account and are probably padded a bit to cover shipping to furthest distances.

    Can you suggest how you would ship a set of china place settings?

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL...I HATE shipping china. That said, I have shipped it. Every piece I had that I had the original packing material arrived safely. So, obviously, use the original packing if you have it. If not, put thin cardboard between each piece. Stack like pieces together. Use a well-fitted box around those. Put that in a larger box surrounded by packing peanuts. I have always double boxed every piece of china I've ever shipped. Because it's such a pain to ship, I only pick up pieces that are relatively expensive...enough to warrant my time. I hope that helps!

    One thing you didn't mention was putting the date on the label or changing the date if the package is prepared the day before you actually take it to the post office

      No, I didn't and could have. It's usually automatic, but not always. Especially on holidays. Good catch

    How do you decide which box to use - your bought box or USPS box?

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can only use the USPS Priority box if you are shipping Priority mail. So, if I'm shipping something Priority mail, I always try to use their Priority supplies. If I ship any other way, I use my own supplies.

    thank you. I am thinking about starting an eBay store, I am scared about shipping I do sell on Poshmark I wanted to do more platforms

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Poshmark is definitely easier. It's more expensive for lower cost items because there are fewer choices.
      But, shipping gets easier with every single package

    Im a really big fan of your work keep it up. Ive actually got a question do you know for the stikers that you used on your products do you need to have that also do you know when you print of the label do you need a label printer or can i use a regular printer which prints the label out as paper. If i do need a label printer pls tell me where you got yours from. Keep up the good work as well a really big fan.

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don't need the stickers. You can absolutely use a regular printer and then just tape the shipping label down. I bought my Rollo on Amazon and I have an affiliate link for it in my description. But, don't spend anything you don't have to when getting started. Less is more. 😀
