  • Join Roy Hill as he offers a quick look at the iconic Smith & Wesson 629. This popular double-action revolver was introduced in 1978 and derives its design from the Model 29-Smith’s large N-frame revolver. The 6 in front of the 29 denotes the stainless steel construction of the 629’s frame. Though four decades have passed since its inception the 629 continues to be popular among hunters, shooters and collectors alike.

    Absolutely THE most gorgeous and sought after 629 ever produced! The no dash pinned and recessed 629…..from 1979-1981, truly the pinnacle of fine firearm craftsmanship from Smith & Wesson! The Holy Grail is the 4” model (and rarest) followed by the 6” shown here. These guns will soon (if not close to being there now) be the highest priced wheel guns at every major auction house. If you can find one, GET IT!

    Another indicator of your 629’s “generation” is the hammer mounted firing pin. I love my 27-2, which is a few years older, but provides the same excellent design, quality, workmanship, accuracy and “old fashioned” features (pinned and recessed, three Ts, and hammer mounted firing ground pin). Thanks for this fine video.

    I love my 27, manufactured about 10 years before this 629: N Frame, deep blue, 3T’s, P&R’ed and an entirely functional and proud example of the superb revolver craftsmanship and quality of older S&Ws.

    Nice video, the the dished area on the left grip is a relief cut so all the empty cartridge cases fall free upon ejection.

      No, because we’re not all naive enough to think it wasn’t safety checked before the video was made. How do you look down the barrel btw?

    • @TheDarby88
      @TheDarby88 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It’s the principle my guy. I would hope and do believe they probably did a safety check before starting, but I would have hoped and believed that Alec Baldwin and his team would have done the same lol
      If I have to look down a barrel I remove the barrel from the firearm if possible. In this case I would open the cylinder, then inspect.

    I will say the one thing I LOVE with the older 629s is smith didn’t make the stainless triggers grooved which is fantastic for double action shooting. As much as I love my 29-2, the grooved trigger tears up my finger after a while and I end up putting it back in the safe for a while till my finger calluses back up. Shook someone’s hand once and they asked me why my index finger was so callused compared to the rest of my hand 😅

    Older video (2018) but I thought I'd comment. I always thought the "scallop" on the left grip panel was so the spent cases would clear. Maybe that's because I'm a lefty.😊

    • @Mike-up6go
      @Mike-up6go 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      fosterdl1.....I believe you are correct. That particular 629 has what is called an "ejector cut" on the left grip. If you look closer at some other Smiths with the same type of grips they also have what is called a "speedloader cutout "

    • @Mike-up6go
      @Mike-up6go 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The speedloader cutout is deeper cut into the grip and more pronounced in appearance, therefore it will accommodate a speedloader made for that particular model revolver.

  • @Mike-up6go

    Target hammer and target stocks yes.....but I believe the trigger is a smooth combat trigger on your revolver. It looks a tad wider on that 629 then other model and caliber Smiths. My 629-2 6" is exactly the same as yours in that regard and on the box it indicates TS ( target stocks) TH (target hammer) and CT ( combat trigger) Not sure if the true target triggers which are wider have serrations or not on the 629. Anyone know ??

      This is a no dash original 629 (pinned & recessed) 6” barrel. Easily the most sought after 629 in existence. 4” barrel is even more sought after.

    Pointing the muzzle of a firearm at yourself or anything else you're not willing to destroy is NEVER a good idea. ALWAYS follow the 4-basic rules of firearm safety and you'll most likely never experience an accidental discharge.
    1. Treat every gun at all times as if it was loaded.
    2. Never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.
    4. Be sure of your target and what is behind and beside it.

      Plus he opened the cylinder and showed the camera it was empty before pointing the barrel in his direction. Have you never looked down the barrel of a safety checked weapon to inspect it for fouling or crud you may have missed while cleaning?
