  • Was listed at a dealership, was taken in on trade. Was in such fantastic condition they decided to retail it rather than to wholesale it. Just goes to show, if you take care of a car, it will last as long as you want it to.

    I've been daily driving a 2002 RX300 since 2018. My Mom bought it new for around $30K and it had 41K miles on it when I got it. She last drove the car in 2016 and when I went to Florida to pick it up I had to replace the battery. Last year I went out to start it and nothing. Ended up replacing the engine computer PCM/ECU module for $900. A couple of bulbs, wiper blades and of course oil changes. I've put almost $1600 in it to date. The vehicle has 86K on it and the Michelin Tires still have good tread ( not sure when she replaced them). Maybe I love it because it was Mom's but I surmise I'd still appreciate it for it's value.

    I bought my ‘02 RX new in January 2002. It looks exactly like this one. I have close to 250k miles on it, and other than minor repairs, it still runs great. I hope to keep it for another 21 years. It’s amazing how long a quality car can last when it’s maintained and kept in a garage.

      @@julioserna5659 Hey Julio. I’ve never had battery problems other than replacement about every five years. Other than timing belt changes, every 100k miles or so, (be sure to change water pump along with timing belt) front wheel bearings, idler arms, that’s about it for the 21 years that I had the Lexus. Hope to keep it another 21 years as car payments get very boring.

      I've seen that many people talk about reliability on this car, and it's a big + for me that made me close an eye on fuel consumption. I just don't want to deal with mechanics anymore, other than usual maintenance. I'm so tired of negative experiences.

    Piece of garbage - don't buy one of these! I just bought one 2 weeks ago and it's the biggest headache I've ever had! The knock sensors were bad so it wasn't shifting into overdrive and was revving 5k rpms on the highway! What a piece of junk! I had to pay my mechanic $2000 to fix it- more money that I've ever spent to fix a vehicle! And a few days later it's still not fixed and still won't shift into overdrive! Now back at the shop again! And the radio is terrible - worse I've ever had in any vehicle! Gas mileage is terrible for a small V6 - you can get better gas mileage with a big V8!

    • @mr.iforgot3062
      @mr.iforgot3062 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Knock sensor is a problem. But if your mechanically inclined it's a fantastic car. I did the knock sensor hack with mine. Worked excellent for about a year. Than when the last knock sensor went bad. I had no choice, but to take the top part of the motor apart to replace the knock sensors correctly. It's still hacked, and wired to 1 knock sensor. I can reverse it, but haven't. Mine is running perfect at 345,000 miles with original transmission. Full power, car is super clean. I use it everyday. I bought it with 300,000 miles. Like I said, if your willing to wrench yourself and watch TH-cam videos on how to fix? It's a great car. Yours probably has a shot ton of miles. That's when the knock sensors take a shit. Not always, but mostly. I feel you. Paying some guy to work on your car. I never have anybody fix my stuff, only because I can't afford it

    • @NATEG01
      @NATEG01 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@mr.iforgot3062 Yeah I finally got the Lexus fixed and I'm a lot happier with it now. I'm not very mechanically inclined, so I had a friend that tried doing the wire hack, but it didn't work because both knock sensors were bad. Which is why I took it to my mechanic, and why he charged me so much to fix it since he had replace both sensors. Was still having problems, so I took it back the 2nd time and he had to replace the wiring harness. He also replaced the exhaust, fuel injectors, spark plugs, O2 sensor, and fixed an air vacuum leak. Part of having an old vehicle, lots of things to fix. But it's running great now. The previous owner replaced the battery, breaks, and shocks last year, so it drives like a brand new car and the body and interior are still in immaculate condition. I'm still not impressed with the gas mileage though, and radio signal is bad. But for a car its age it's in great shape. Very comfortable and smooth ride.

I watch a lot of Scotty Kilmer videos and he says NOT to change the transmission oil on cars with extremely high mileage. I could explain it, but Scotty's video on it makes sense. So far, so good. No leaks nowhere. Engine oil, doesn't leak. Nothing. Just replaced the control arm bushings, that made all the difference in the world. Just be careful with the 98 to 2002 RX300 as the U140E transmission will fail near 80K, if the recall had yet to have that transmission replaced. The pins usually fail for the planetary gear sets, or the torque converter mounting can fail. In 2003, those issues were corrected after it was determined that cooling, lube and those hardware pins were the main culprit. The last 2001 I purchased had a blown transmission that I rebuilt and lo and behold, the issues in that trans were by the book for the recall.

    • @itsame3379
      @itsame3379 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So if it's a 2000 with 170,000 is it safe to assume the tranny has been replaced?

    • @phoenixmistertwo8815
      @phoenixmistertwo8815 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @itsame3379 , this recall is a strange one indeed. You will find only TSBs (technical service bulletins) relating to this transmission failure, and it gives steps for the mechanics and the reset TCM procedure for any and all replacement units.
      I even read that for some time, the Lexus's that came in with tranny issues were also upgraded in certain parts like the valve body, torque converter, and a few line pressure solenoids. If a transmission didn't yet fail, the dealer upgraded those parts instead while refreshing their ECMs to help shift smoother.
      I chased these upgrades everywhere last year, and none were able to tell me what I have read with regard to upgraded valve bodies and this reflash for the ECU. Much of that is due to the time that's lapsed since 2003 or so, and even more so because of the sneaky way they went about handling this issue.
      I believe that after NHTSA finally got reports from injury failures with this model in particular, one being the Transmission locked up while moving on the hwy, and another where a house or wall was hit while attempting to reverse, Lexus finally hit the panic button and did a sorta silent recall, if I'm not mistaken.
      Lexus also did a massive research endeavor to look into this U140E transmission issue, spending millions, as they wanted to know if the faults could make the designers or manufacturers accountable for the high cost swapping out the transmission for what we see today in the 2003 models. These models all have the same transmission, but the components were upgraded, and all their books adjusted. It's for this reason that while rebuilding my bad transmission, the OEM parts I purchased were all post 2003 or so. I also upgraded my valve body for a higher flow version, and I replaced the bad planet gear set for 1st/reverse that had its mounting pins sheared just as expected from the research in the recall.
      Anyway, after I rebuilt it all, it took months for me to figure out what was causing this strange 2nd to 3rd shift stall, and that started a journey into my ECM, which all have the TCM built into it. As it turns out, resetting the adaptive learning in the TCMs shift matrix can not be reset by disconnecting a battery or any other strange method like hitting the brake a number of times while cycling through the Ignition. Lexus requires a special scanner tool, and it's the one that you really can't buy without spending a few thousand dollars.
      I did find a person and shop later on who could reset all that for me, and it did fix my shift issue to where it only flutters a bit when it's cold. I even replaced my synthetic with Toyota Type IV fluid to help with this cold shift issue, and there was an improvement using that fluid, especially since I rebuilt everything.
      Tell me, please, do you ever have a stubborn upshift from 2nd to 3rd when you first start driving it?
      Now I tell you all this in case one day you need to know this information and solution I went through.
      If you don't have a transmission issue now, then I'd say perhaps it was recalled and the unit replaced. That's the best case scenario. If not, maybe it was upgraded and reflashed at some point to preserve the unit from this failure that got so many after 80 grand.
      When it fails, it will go one of two ways... The torque converter can break due to washers missing from its mounting bolts, and this will put the trans pump and unit at risk for failure.
      The the most common failure, which is what I had to deal with, are the pins breaking for the planet gear set, and that will destroy the transmission and you'll lose the ability to move and get into gear. I bought the car busted, so I am unsure of what symptoms appeared prior to the transmission failure. I do know it sat for some time before the owner decided to sell it for cheap given the bad tranny.
      Lol. Well, sorry for the length here. Maybe you can find out on carfax what work may have been done on your Lexus. If your transmission feels great now, just make sure to have good fluid in there that can be changed from a handful of pan draining and not a flush.
