Patrick- the pitch doesn't come the glass rods. You'll see they are all the same size and length. They are only used for their vibration creating aspects triggered from being rubbed by moistened fingers. Pitch comes from the vertical metal assemblages to which the glass rods are affixed, and the rest of the design is to amplify those vibrations into audibility.
I really have to TRY to build one! My biggest trouble is HOW TO HAVE THE GLASS BARS IN KEY? It's very difficult to create a glass that vibrates at the exact frequency !!
This is a completely acoustic instrument. The cristal was invented in the 1950s, and it is the most recently invented acoustic instrument of any significance, barring perhaps the hang. New instruments don't get invented all that often, and rarely are they as radically different as the cristal is from what came before them.
The glass rod is not tuned, it squeaks when stroked with wet fingers. It is coupled at a right angle to a metal rod which is fixed at the bottom and free at the top. It's length - mass is tuned. The glass rod is coupled at about a third of the way up to the tuned metal rod. Now instead of squeaking it sings out with the resonance of the rod. The bottoms of the tuned rods are coupled to the speaker cones for "amplification". Think of it as a thumb piano or orchestra bells that are stroked with a "bow" rather than a hammered or plucked action.
Eh? How the devil does one supposedly play this here contraption? Now this piece hta's bein performed is "Fur Elise!" By Beethoven: I say that, on account of a friend of mine havig told me, but now, sadly his wife's had to be placed in a nursing home owing to her having dementia!
Astounding. Love the range and resonance of the audio and the performance visuals. Dean is constantly amazing.
Beautiful and unique musical instrument.

Such a beautiful instrument.
Go on! Play Picture Box! You know you want to!
This is what I imagine what an alien instrument would look like.
Really cool!
This is the most soothing thing I’ve ever heard
PICTURE BOX video ident playing on the big tv on a wheelie stand at primary school in the early 1980s... the stuff of nightmares.
Very impressive and relaxing sound !

Awesome. Would love to learn how to build one.
This melts all my rationality into sense.
The first few notes sound just like the main theme for Tron Legacy.

This thing would give me serious nightmares just looking at it 😬
Close Encounters of The Third Kind! LOL Olympics music :)

Cliff Martinez uses it highly effective in his works.

It must be said however, dude got chops.

It's the metal down rods that create the note, the glass bars aren't tuned.
What a fantastic instrument, have there been any new acoustic instruments designed since synthesizers took over?

Somebody can help me?... What is the name of the Song on 2 minutes, thanks!
SUPERMAN!

Beautiful...
Is Mr Dean Shostak a relative of Dimitri Shostakovich?
:) It would be nice, wouldn't it ?...
@Blahdabbadoo Most instruments sound different out in the audience than they do right next to you. I'm sure he can hear his music fine.
Will Uli Behringer clone this? xD
What's that first piece of music called?
Fanfare for the Common Man
What's the last son he plays? @2:00
I should know this but what's the song in the beginning?
Can someone explain exactly how it works. I can tell it uses the vibration from the crystal rods but how?
Wet fingers on tuned lengths of glass rod work like wet fingers on tuned depths of water-glasses.

0:02 to 0:08 ..... Tron legacy ???
I can create the same sound with Absynth :P
What's that? on the hill?
My gawd it's reddit
Sure the cristal baschet is bad-ass, but it's street cred is tarnished somewhat by him being such a dork.
