What I'm curious about is how you do the shorter, more accented notes, mostly in the upper notes during the melody. They sounds almost like you're hitting the glass, rather than the more smooth motions. Is that the case? Or perhaps the smaller glasses stand out more and have a shorter ring time. Or you're just very good at dampening the cups as you play. Still, I wonder if you can "hit" them harder or otherwise make them louder, but only for a short period. Those top notes very much have a bell-like quality.

I actually tried to make music with different glasses for a music project once, so I went to a store and just bought a bunch of random glasses and had to awkwardly tap them with a spoon in the store too 😂😂
The last time I was in Venice, I came across a girl performing this song on glasses of water in a public square. It was beautiful. This one sounds even better, though, but I’m guessing it’s at least in part because they’re in a performance hall and have even more glasses at their disposal. Love that people have these talents!
@@OffGridInvestor Link Knight I do singing bowls... The speed of your finger doesn't change the note. The speed of your finger needs to be precise and fairly exact to produce any sound at all. If you change speed or pressure, it just gets quiet. Tibetan-style singing bowls and traditional glass armonicas don't use water except to moisten your fingertips, so a glass harp probably also doesn't use water. We use water to change to pitch of identical wine glasses when doing this as a parlour trick but these glasses are all different sizes so they are probably tuned during manufacturer. Of all the instruments that have ever been invented, this one probably takes the longest to go out of tune.
i don't think playing them is the hardest part of this... i mean they had to add specific amounts of water to specific sized glasses in order for them to be in tune. an excess of drop could literally make a note sharp. props to them
They're actually not quite THAT sensitive. Or I guess it is, but a few drops won't be noticeable to the ear. You just use a digital tuner (or an app); pour more water until the appropriate glass is in tune. I helped setup a few during special shows using syringe or suction device of some kind to take out water/remove; you can even 'eyeball' most smaller glasses, and just fine tune the last bits. It is a bit time consuming...most instruments can tune up in a minute (if that), but it takes a good 10-15 minutes at least when you need to tune all the glasses. Fortunately, if you leave it setup and covered you don't typically need to redo it that often.
Yes fine i am going to talk about their album called Glassified. I think its a great choice of name that they made with a very funny pun. Indeed i would say the right name for this
🔵 Unlike some other glass instruments that you may have seen, these glasses are tuned by the glass blower when they are made and are attached to the table and played dry/empty.

@Domino Hurley For sure! We did a song in choir that required wine glasses for every choir member. Tuning all 60 glasses took up a majority of rehearsal, even with several tuners 😂

Love your comment, but the timbre of a perfect sine wave is different. It's closer to timbre of a clarinet, but not the same. Perfect sine wave timbre is also closer to the lead instrument in the old Doctor Who theme music.
My jaw dropped and then I started crying. It’s so pretty and nostalgic. It reminds me of Christmas paintings, the nut cracker, late a Christmas nights staring at the ceiling and twinkling lights when everyone is sleeping, pretty decor, etc.
I held my chest in total amazement - and yes, my jaw dropped too. My eyes started to glaze over. This was total magic. In such a dystopian world, this was the stuff of beautiful dreams.
What an amazing new way, for me to hear the Sugar Plum Fairy, played by hands on glasses, filled with water, to give out this delightful, unheard off before, "Glass Harp" sound. How very clever and inventive of you both, and I adored it! Bravo, do carry on please with your extraordinary hard work. Chilling! Thank you.
Catherine Blair I don't think there is water in them actually. I think their different sizes gives them a different sound. They normally fill them with water if they are glasses of the same size. The water acts as a dampener, this allows you to adjust the height of the part of the glass that is resonating and this gives you a different sound. Using glasses with pre tuned notes is more accurate as relying on water can be tricky, it evaporates, moves and would be difficult to get the right amount in the glass to tune it perfectly. Pre tuned glasses are a set and forget option and is quicker to set-up. Just a FYI for everyone as I think the science behind it pretty cool.
+Catherine Blair they didnt invent the glass harp lol it has been around since 1741. Tchaikovsky wanted the Dance of the Suger Plum Fairy to have the sound of water drops which is why he wrote it for the Celesta. The glass harp sounds a lot like a celesta so it is a great choice.
Becky Crawford, Ben Franklin thought the same thing, so he built an instrument to do just this. Numerous composers, including Mozart wrote pieces of music for it.
@@inkyguy I believe there was a bit of a problem with those, because the glass was leaded. Over-practicing could lead to worse problems than carpel tunnel syndrome.
I'm seeing a lot of comments like this from people on music/talent videos. Sure, this is entertaining but what good does it do for the world? Why is it that human worth/value is being determined by what impressive talents/skills you can provide for temporary entertainment purposes now? What I'm saying is... you shouldn't feel useless just because you aren't doing something like this. Frankly, I think most people that do stuff like this have way too much time on their hands (not that hobbies are necessarily a bad thing).
@Bristecom: Take it in the sense of Adorno: Only if there's no purpose in life, you are truely free. And if you are truely free - why not use the time you have on earth and entertain yourself? No Pill that grants you immortality will grant you a beautiful life.
As someone who was *_obsessed_* at age 12 with trying to make every glass I could get my hands on ring, I'd love to know how these two produce the tones so quickly. The vibration usually takes a moment to get going and produce the sound. These two are wizards! BTW, 1:31 is just magical.

The glasses must be glued to the table. Either that or these performers have the most-amazing dexterity and feel. BRAVO!
The last time I was in Venice, I came across a girl performing this song on glasses of water in a public square. It was beautiful. This one sounds even better, though, but I’m guessing it’s at least in part because they’re in a performance hall and have even more glasses at their disposal. Love that people have these talents!
Nice
Ummm.. its a piece not a song but noice

@@johne4757 it’s alright. They’re actually correct. 🙂
I just realized, this thing must go out of tune faster when it's hot.
Part of the tune is based on the speed they move their fingers.
Not just hot the vibration causes the water to vaporize faster as well
@@OffGridInvestor Link Knight I do singing bowls...
Of all the instruments that have ever been invented, this one probably takes the longest to go out of tune.
isn;t that the case for most instruments
Yea but this one goes out of tuner faster coz the water evaporates
i don't think playing them is the hardest part of this... i mean they had to add specific amounts of water to specific sized glasses in order for them to be in tune. an excess of drop could literally make a note sharp. props to them
It's a touch and go situation.
Actually I think their cups are size tuned, I don't think they used any water at all
They first tried this outdoors but it started to rain and threw it out of tune... 😆
You tune it by ear otherwise those weak machines can
The co-ordination and sheer musical skill between these two performers is astonishing! So very cool! Love and peace.
Let’s be honest, nobody thought it would sound this perfect on a glass instrument
Dont want to be that guy, but the cups shown in the video are made out of crystal, not glass.
@@ctrl_x1770 ohhh i didn't know! ty for telling me :)
Somehow this sounds more magical than the original instruments the piece was designed for
The original instrument for this was glass harmonica which sounds absolutely the same.
@@ИльяЖданов-к4ц the original instrument is celesta. Which is also much more versatile than this nonsence.

I can only imagine the amount of time invested to fill each glass with the right amount of water to get that exact note ... Picture perfect !!
They dont fill it with water do they? I thought the notes were different because of the sizes of the glasses
Pitcher perfect.
@@BuffyTheBuffaloSlayer well it depends on each glass really. And yes the amount of water you put in it will also determine the pitch
🔵 Unlike some other glass instruments that you may have seen, these glasses are tuned by the glass blower when they are made and are attached to the table and played dry/empty.

And btw,...don't you mean "Pitcher"-perfect?
I spend like a full hour in a restaurant trying to get a wine glass to do the slightest squeak and when I do I'm like "bow down mortals I control the glass".
How the heck do they just slap their hands on the glass and it sings like it's desperate.
It's hella easy to do if you wet your hands, and press down.
Same 😞
@Dawn Ironside I mean I believe I've tried with glass and it works but I'm not too sure. I usually wet a finger and circle it on the rim of the glass.
Imagine how long it must have taken to get the pitch just right for each glass
Tuning wine glasses isn't too difficult. You just find a tuner and pour in/out water until it's correct
wtf if your pfp
@Domino Hurley For sure! We did a song in choir that required wine glasses for every choir member. Tuning all 60 glasses took up a majority of rehearsal, even with several tuners 😂

It sounds quite magical. And when recorded, the glasses produce such a clean, perfect sine wave in waveform. I've never seen anything quite like it.
Simply beautiful, or should I say beautifully complicated, hard to describe the wonder I felt. Martin Adelaide australia
Love your comment, but the timbre of a perfect sine wave is different. It's closer to timbre of a clarinet, but not the same. Perfect sine wave timbre is also closer to the lead instrument in the old Doctor Who theme music.

The power of art.
When people say that common things are not true art, moments like this reveal that lie.
ok lol
I'm not quite crying, but there's some angst with nostalgia for festive holidays I've never experienced.
I held my chest in total amazement - and yes, my jaw dropped too. My eyes started to glaze over. This was total magic. In such a dystopian world, this was the stuff of beautiful dreams.
The dreamy sound quality of this harp evokes images of magic, mystery & fantasy.
Chilling! Thank you.
I've seen this before but ever get tired of watching it. It is truly brilliant and I love the Sugar Plum Fairy music too!
+Catherine Blair For a real thrill, look up"glass organ".I believe it was invented by Thomas Edison.
+Michael Henwood I stand corrected,it was also called "glass harmonica" and "Glass harp".Beautiful in any case.

This moved me to tears. One of my absolute favorite songs, and definitely my favorite Christmas song! Stunning!
this was amazing.. i feel so useless
all humans are special just gotta find your talent😉
dude you can do it!
There is no use in finding one useless. That which you are is what is your.
@Bristecom:
Take it in the sense of Adorno: Only if there's no purpose in life, you are truely free.
