I'm either misremembering or constructing a memory out of how here, but I have a core memory of my first long term game master ranting about how much he loved this game more than Vampire when when the group asked him to run WoD in like 1994 or so. if it matters, our main games were AD&D2E and Cyberpunk2020. I ended up playing a daywalker caitiff in that vampire game who ate vampires for fun and profit in the vampire game we eventually played.
If this proves to be a better way to simulate What We Do in the Shadows in tabletop form, then frankly I'm sold by the madness that is this weird pre-VTM vampire TRPG. Happy Hallow's Eve, Notepad Anon. Lovely work on all your videos, vods and recent homebrew RPGs lately, dude.
Good vid! Nightlife is one of my favorite games that I've never played (another one is Rolemaster). I always liked it better than Vampire and the rest of the WoD because Nightlife is built from the ground up to be cross monster compatible. Everything uses the same basic system, so interspecies groups are the norm and not something the devs would come to your house to kneecap you for. Also, it has one of the better non-Lovecraftian eldritch horror setups, as there's a whole Underdark style region full of Junji Ito sketched Far Realms nightmares that even the Kin don't want to tangle with (and a breach into that region is one of the few things to get an automatic cease fire/truce between the various factions in game so they can seal it up).
Hey, it really is Nightlife. I was halfway expecting this to be about some other more recent game I hadn't heard of that had cribbed the name. Still remember when Vampire first came out and my immediate thought was "Man, they ripped off NIghtlife? Do something original, you losers." :)
I would say that I remember running this game back in the day but that would be a lie. I don't remember it at all. I know I ran it but I don't remember a damn thing about it. 80s action/horror movie New York? Deathwish but with monsters?
my tattered copy rests on my shelf. First modern horror game in my hands. special place.
