      I was right, the poster boy was not yet ready, but could be in the years to come, I hope he does well and becomes a superstar, cos he is a good rider but the GCN (Dan) elevated him to a higher status without the runs on the board !!!

    This week, in the world of racing, we learned that it takes a Bahrain leadout, a Pogi attack, a MvdP wattbomb, a tailwind and modern aero bikes to break a 28 yo EPO record. This gives a little bit of hope that current cycling might be a bit cleaner.

    • @henrivanbemmel
      @henrivanbemmel ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Good point. In addition, these folks today are more specialized as well and have the best training and equipment (beyond aero bikes). Be interesting to analyze other 'records' of the past at the other monuments, classics or the Giro or Tour where the situation was comparable. I wonder how MvDP's sprint in the Strade Bianche a few years ago (2019?) where he burned 1400W or something compares with the bad old days cycling.

    • @chrisridesbicycles
      @chrisridesbicycles ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henrivanbemmel One of the things we will unfortunately never no. Like what an undoped Ullrich with als his talent but a good mental coach could have done. Or a 3-up battle of the killer instincts of Mercx, Armstrong and Pogi.

The effect of what I learned about nutrition, especially during training, in the last 2 years gave me a big boost. In my opinion, drafting the race motos should be fair game. It's the race organizers' responsibility to get out of the way. The moto drivers are either trying to get the best footage or they are just clueless. Pre-ride the course and know where to pass.

    • @thearmchairpsychologist27

    • @brentperez4700
      @brentperez4700 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the problem with the motos is when the impede riders progress as shown in the this video or worse when they collide with riders, which happens too often. Drones are the future if we are in anyway serious about rider safety.

    • @philipk4475

    • @neelsahay5227

      The local race moto officials where I’m from are all also racers themselves, so they know how to position themselves perfectly.
      Instead of police volunteers, the UCI should just make sure everyone on course is appropriately trained. Goes for team cars too. There really are a lot of sketchy moments for seemingly no reason.

      I made a comment about the camera before. Idiot move and changes should be made. You need the varsity doing this at this level and at that point in the race. What kind of sh*t was it to jam 3 of the world's best riders into a love set made for two like a bunch of kids. Holy cow, unbelievable how organizers don't think. These guys are tired and sweaty and now are jammed like very low class move on the race organizer and I would someone told them so. I sure would said something to someone even if I had been a DS even if my rider was not there.

    There is a saying in Dutch regarding bike racing, "eat other people's plate first before eating your own".
    Van der Poel rode the smartest and made the best decisions on Saturday.
    He used Bahrain, UAE and then Van Aert and only launched after everybody else had worked themselves tired - unbeknownst to them - for him.
    Of course, he also had to be explosive enough to get a gap and strong enough to make it stick.
    Chapeau Mathieu!

    Dan throated that hard cheese head Holland (Hollandse kaaskop aka West Friese) G there perfectly when trying to say Gerben Thijssen. Perhaps you should try the soft Brabant (zachte g) G next time which is more close to the Flemish pronunciation. The province of Brabant spans both The Netherlands and Flanders. Although the a and e vowel switch up between Dutch and English is still a pain to get right as a native English speaker. So kudos for trying Dan!

Mvdp played is card well while he was hoping wout could close the gap, stayed on his wheel and then attacked. Gana did the same but for second place.Don't think he was trying to catch mvdp but just saving his legs for the sprint for 2nd place.

    I was surprised to see WVA being isolated the whole Poggio. Tratnik crash cost them, but you would still expect Valter or Laporte there, with Wellens and Kragh Andersen. Imo that made the 2% difference between being glued to Pogi and Ganna's wheel, and having togo in the red to close a 2 bike length gap on Ganna.

      @henrivanbemmel ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I agree that JV as a team did not seem to be as dialed in as in other races. I mean you can fail to win, but as a team they seemed a bit oiff. A real credit to WVA for getting that close. As they climbed except for MVDP, I think the rest thought they might be together over the top. Pogacar couldn't drop them and so with MvDP seeming a bit off at T/A, it looked great that he was there, but perhaps that would been enough. Then boom.

Of all the places in this race where things are going to happen and with these riders in the lead group then the idiot goes and shows us the chasing group that is completely out of it by save a crash or something. It does not matter if last year's winner is in this second group either. The action was with the leading 4 and at that point in the race the camera should never have left them. Dunno how this happens at this level.

    Frequently the problem is there’s too many press motos - they should get their photos early and then get out of the way, definitely not in the final 25km of a race. The TV motos mostly do the best they can and when there’s hours and hours of coverage occasionally there’s the odd mistake. A lot of the criticism of them comes from people who have no experience of riding a motorbike, let alone one with a cameraperson stood on the back. We’d have no sport if it wasn’t for these people. The only other comment would be about consistency - Tom Pidcock got considerably less help when he won Strade than say Van Baarle did in his win this spring with an armada of motos in front of him in the final 10km - that’s on the organisers & UCI

    Bringingthe XC world cups to GCN+ doesn't really add value to it when it was free to watch last year.

      Not yet, but she is in training since she gave birth to her second kid.
      According to a Q&A, she plans to resume racing in May.

    Does anyone else have trouble understanding Ms. Been when she goes full on with names and places. I like her commentary a lot. But sometimes I’m lost when her Dutch / European accent kicks in . Sorry, I’m just a dumb American.

      No you're not dumb, just used to commentators that are constantly butchering European names. To me it's like they are making noise, but no sense at all. I really like how José pronounces them, because I'm used to commentators that make an effort to pronounce the names correctly. Take for instance a relatively new name like Adegeest. Instead of Ahhh-duhh-gazed, they butcher it into @ddegheist or something even more gibberish. When commentators would consistently use a pronounciation close to the original, noone would have to guess whom they are referring to.

    I think Van Aert is still not as savvy on tactics as he should be. He seems to spend too much energy pulling others along.

      Sometimes I think WVA thinks racing is mostly about strength - and he is convinced that he is the strongest.
      But at MSR, he had no choice but to close the Gap to Pog & Ganna or they were gone. Unfortunately VDP was right on his wheel - and used the matches he saved there to smoke them all in the last 200 meters of the climb.

    Good rcs no motors San remo
    Bad rcs, dangerous course, yet again. Bike rack extends into road, takes out riders. No warnings, no markers, nothing. Ugh. Just put an obstacle in the road. And rcs uci riders union: do nothing. Fix nothing. Change nothing. Pay zero $ to the injured riders. In many ways an amateur sport w danger no other sport in world wd allow. And allow race after race after race.
