    At long last you can now get the classic TV series "I'm Dickens ... He's Fenster" on DVD. It was Stan Laurel's favorite show!

    I was born 1960, so any show made before 1964 that has never been on TV since, I never got to see.There were a lot of good shows on TV in the 1960's-1980's eras, and it seemed like we watched TV non-stop, but what must be remembered is some of those shows only lasted 1 or 2 years, even though they were good.I watched He and She, and That Girl, when I was a child, and I understood them.I thought it would be cool to have Marlo Thomas as a sister.I had a crush on Richard Benjamin.I thought He and She was on for 2 years.We kids back then played outside a lot too, besides watching TV alot.LOL.

    I saw several of these shows back when I was a first-grader watching way too much TV. I can't claim they were good, but they were fair representations of their era. Looking at their intros now, I'm struck by how many of the actors who starred in them are forgotten now.

    Captain Nice starred the great William Daniels, who in a couple of years attained immortality as John Adams in the original cast of 1776!

    Clint Howard also made an appearance in probably every Ron Howard movie. He was also the main character in the TV show "Gentle Ben". Of course, I remember him as "Balok" in the original Star Trek episode "The Corbomite Maneuver".

    I remember reading that Love on a Rooftop was canceled after its writers and actors insisted on tackling subjects too controversial (for the day). And, OMG, I REMEMBER the opening to "He & She", altho I was only a widdle kid at the time -- my older sisters must have watched it regularly...um, for a year.

    Vin Scully indeed narrated "OCCASIONAL WIFE" inbetween baseball seasons, 'sd'. "THE PRUITTS" was actually the "working title" of the original unaired version of the series' pilot. It was seen during the first half of its only season as "THE PRUITTS OF SOUTHAMPTON" (becoming "THE PHYLLIS DILLER SHOW" in January 1967, at the same time "CAPTAIN NICE" premiered).

    This is truely an expert collection of vintage TV one season wonders,,and although these shows were short lived,this was in the day,when,,despite some of the lack of
    success,these shows were still made with quality in mind,when the TV business was
    still within reason,which is no longer the case today,,as Network TV has mutated into
    something far more different-with many Cable TV shows,and current TV executives,
    who truely lack creative imagination,,esp. when it comes to remakes,,bad idea!!

    A CBS executive commented after he cancelled HE & SHE that it was the best show he had ever cancelled. It was a very funny show. As least to a kid in junior high school like me. At least CBS had learned from its mistake years later when it had to decide whether to keep MASH or Bridgette Loves Bernie. They kept MASH, moved it from Fridays to Saturday night between All in The Family and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, creating the most dominate network night in broadcast history. All in The Family AVERAGED a 50% share every week! A feat not seen since I Love Lucy.

    • @richardhajeski2089

      CBS had crap shows renewed for years, but they didn't "get" He and She. One of the shows I sought and watched every week. It must have been memorable for me, since I remember it forty-plus years later. May William Paley burn in hell, for ignoring shows like that one, and also for turning the Yankees into a pile of junk.

    • @VandelayIndustries61
      @VandelayIndustries61 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      richard hajeski Giving you a thumbs up, both for He & She and the Yankees comment. He & She is considered a forerunner to Mary Tyler Moore show, not just for the style of comedy but also because a) the set of Benjamin/Prentiss' apartment looks very much like MTM's; and b) it's pretty well established that the Ted Baxter character on MTM is a redux of Oscar North on He & She.

      According to Harlan Ellison in one of his articles for the L.A. FREE PRESS in late 1968, he said CBS had the option of renewing "HE & SHE" for another season......or taking a chance on a contemporary version of "BLONDIE"--- which aired on Thursday nights in the fall of '68, and cancelled in January 1969.

    Never knew why My Mother The Car only lasted one season; thought it was the most clever idea for a show in ages. Same for The Pruitts of Southhampton.

    • @littlemikey1954
      @littlemikey1954 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MY MOTHER THE CAR was funny. Sure it was a stupid sitcom, with "dear old mother" coming back as a car, because she was reinCARnated... very clever! It was never meant to be an intelligent sitcom that challenged important issues or pushed the limit, like later sitcoms such as ALL IN THE FAMILY or M*A*S*H*. It was escapist entertainment, for crying out loud.
      THE PRUITS OF SOUTHHAMPTON was hilarious! Phyllis Diller alone was a laugh riot!!!! The Pruitts were a wealthy family whose money ran out. Always trying to con their creditors, borrowing money from their butler, it was one hilarious mishap after another.

    I know most but not all of the stars. But some of these shows here, I've never heard of them.
    I grew up..well I was born in 1961 watching reruns as a kid in around 68' and in the 70's up until today even.
    But I never even heard of most of these shows here. "We were lucky to have a TV in the 50's-60's." says my older siblings.
    As I said however, I do remember most of the TV stars. For example; Wendy and Me. Never heard of it. but naturally I know George Burns and the girl, Connie Stevens, Is she the pop singer Connie Stevens? 16 Reasons? (Why I Love You), It looks like her. I never knew she did a sit com. I was too young to remember or too young know about some of these shows. I wasn't even born yet when some of them first aired on TV. I absolutely remember watching Bewitched In
    "Living Color" back in 68-ish. Mom drop me off at the babysitters while she went to work and I would cry......for about 10-mins, then I watch Bewitched. I was about 6-7yrs old. I'll Never forget it. Sadly, I lost my best friend around that same year 1968-ish. He was my age and the son of the same babysitter. She was also my Moms good friend.
    Poor kid, tried to sneak into the locked garage to get ice-cream from out the deep freezer after his mom told him "NO! Not until after dinner," she said. They were renovating or building a new garage, and he had tried to crawl through the unfinished, loosely secured window. He Inadvertently knocked the support rod out and the window frame came crashing down on his little neck. killed him instantly. So horrifying, so sad. RIP Arthur, my first best friend. I'll never forget that ether. I'm gonna watch "Wendy and Me" right now, for the first time in my life and see what that's all about. And perhaps some of the others I've never knew existed. Peace People.

    This is the full version. There is another version, a cover by The Surfaris ("Wipeout"), that I believe was used for the closing credits. They don't really sound similar, except for the lyrics. The song was written by Bob Mosher and Jack Connelly, who also wrote the themes for "The Munsters" and "Leave It to Beaver".

      @@visionaryventures12 Kathy Kohner-Zuckerman. I only called her Kathy or Kat. I thought Gidget was just a character before I met her.
      At the time, she owned at least two homes in the Palisades, overlooking the PCH and the beach/ocean. The rent she charged at the time was pretty cheap for the area. When I saw it in the paper, I expected a dive. However, it was a really nice place.
      The cliff over the PCH was across the street, with a small wooded area "hiding" it. I told her it reminded me of a place where a Columbo killer would throw a body to make it look like someone fell off the cliff. She said she had the same thought.

    What's interesting about Gidget is that the reason it only ran for a season was because the competition, I believe, was The Beverly Hillbillies which in today's world would be like putting anything against Modern Family- the show may be good, but everyone is watching the big, established hit of the time. Gidget then started picking up a good number of viewers during the summer re-run season, but ABC had axed it by then and it was too late to bring it back. I loved discovering it in syndication

    4:10 Gidget was based on a number of movies of the same name. They were based on a writer's daughter who hung out with surfers who called her a "Girl Midget - a Gidget!" It may have been a one-season wonder TV show, but it was quite a movie franchise.

    John Astin, later of "The Addams Family"; Marty Ingles, later the husband of Shirley Jones; Leonard Stern may have struck out with "Dickens and Fenster" but he sure hit a home run later with "Get Smart"; the same with Buck Henry, from "Captain Nice" also to "Get Smart" Clint Howard, brother of Ron "Opie/Richie Cunningham" Howard; Sammy Jackson took over the part originated (on stage and in the movies) by Andy Griffith; "Karen" Is it safe to use that name these days? I used to watch "Gidget" when I am a teenager, and I still can't believe how Sally Field grew from this fluff into a great, Oscar-winning actress!

(God, Paula Prentiss was pretty! And so talented and funny--she should have had a MUCH bigger career) And thanks for posting "The Pruitts of Southampton"--I've never seen that show but always been curious about it because I like Phyllis Diller and remember her from TV appearances and sixties movies.

    Richard Denning, who played the father on "Karen," was later The Governor on "Hawaii Five-O." The woman who played her mother bears an uncanny resemblance to the one who played Patty Duke's mother. "Love on a Rooftop" was the favorite show of my girlfriend in sixth grade. "He and She" was brilliantly written; it's a shame it only lasted one season.
    Julie Parrish was another living doll. And wasn't Emmaline Henry Mrs. Mitchell on "Dennis the Menace"?

    I'm 78 & watched most of these sit-coms, when they were new in the 1960's! Since t.v. had far more 1/2 hour
    television shows then, it was easier to get one on, than today, but many failed to succeed past one season!
    p.s. In 1962, I was partially responsible for a "sit-com" "pilot", not being broadcast!The show was called
    "The Jackson's", starring Joan Blondell & J. Pat O'Malley & I gave it a bad review, at an NBC Studio, NYC audition!

      That's because it played for so long in syndication. It was still in syndication into the '80s, and was on TV Land for a few years after that.

    •  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      One season shows rarely found their way into syndication. Gidget was a rare exception, largely because Sally Field became famous for her later shows and films.
      That changed once cable systems with hundreds of channels came along (and still later, digital TV channels with programming entirely cobbled together from old reruns like RTV). There are so many now and they have to find SOMETHING to fill up their hours. Most old shows that still exist in the vaults will probably show up sooner or later; the exceptions will be shows where the rights can't be untangled or that the rights holders choose to withhold.
      That does not mean, alas, that they will all show up on home video. A big problem there is securing the music rights; the original contracts for using music don't cover home video but they do cover rebroadcasts.

    • @eohaver2
      @eohaver2 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well said, ma'am. I'm from the old TV days and watched it when it was on back in the 1960s. So, yeah, I understand all this about pre-cable and post-modern television. But I loved the Gidget shows, it was very popular during the time it was on. She dressed like us, did "normal" things teenagers did. (except she went to the beach an awful lot. She must have been ditching.)

    Interesting fact about "WENDY AND ME": in order to get Connie Stevens as his co-star {she was under contract to Warner Bros. at the time}, George Burns had to produce a series for her studio....which happened to be "NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS", which appeared just before "WENDY" on ABC's Monday night schedule in the 1964-'65 season. Both lasted just one season [who could compete against CBS' "ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW" and "THE LUCY SHOW"???].
