Where you a fan of Here Come the Brides? If so, what are some of your favorite episodes of the classic western? Let us know in the comments. Here Come The Brides debuted on ABC on September 25, 1968. The western series was loosely based on Asa Mercer’s real-life efforts to bring civilization to frontier Seattle in the 1860s by shipping in marriageable women from the East Coast where the American Civil war left many towns short of men. The show, despite being somewhat dated and misogynistic by modern standards, is considered to be a classic. Even so, it only aired for two seasons before being canceled in 1970. Its first season was well received, but after changes to its format were made during season two, its ratings took a massive nosedive.

The producers of the series claimed that the show was based on the 1954 film Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Unlike other westerns of the mid-20th-century, Here Come the Brides featured very little gunplay or violence. Generally speaking, whenever there was any onscreen conflict, it was limited to comical fistfights.
This decision was made to keep with the restrictions that had been implemented to curtail television violence at the time. The show’s stories highlighted the significance and importance of cooperation, interracial harmony, and peace-seeking conflict resolution. The majority of the series’ plots gave audiences a mix of drama and humor. It was also notable for being one of the first shows targeted toward younger women. Because of this, most of its humor was made at the expense of the men. Very few shows that came before it was able to accomplish what Here Come the Brides did, and really few have since.
While Here Come The Brides only aired for two seasons, it left behind a very significant mark on television. Watch this video in full to discover why, despite enjoying a lively fan base, the series ended up getting the ax so early on in its run.

Most of the girls in our grade signed a petition to bring the show back which was then sent to KOMO in Seattle. Dec 15th, 2021; Bridget Hanley died of Alzheimer’s at 80 years old. Back in 2019; Mitzi Hoag who played Miss Essie /86/ died Feb 26th, 2019. Bo Svenson /81/ who played Big Suede and became Miss Essie husband is still alive as of 2/11/23. We lost Capt Clancy (Henry Beckman) /86/ June 17th , 2008. Mark Lenard -Aaron Stemple- died Nov 22nd, 1996 @ 72. Joan Blondell was by far the oldest on the show (born 8/30/06) died on Christmas Day in 1979, she was 73. While paired with Clancy (Henry Beckman), she actually was 15 years older; she born in 1906 and he 1921. I see by the many tributes to show; many here (like me) probably thought of the show Brides characters as “relatives” or friends. The actors/actresses, the storyline(s) and the music /Hugo Montenegro/ was top notch. I read some on the show and the cast got along very well and enjoyed working together - AND IT SHOWED.

I could never forget this series. I had such a crush on Bridget Hanley. And I briefly followed "singing star" Bobby Sherman"...who was followed by David Soul. In fact, Bobby's first wife-in real life-was Carnell. Back in the '70's, I'd challenge there was a prettier girl in So. California. For whatever reason/s, she and Bobby divorced. Sadly, she ended up married to David...I'll only say she came in to my shop with a blackened eye at least once. I'd become friends were her father during that time period. Anyway, at Columbia Ranch, they used "the pond" at the NE corner or the acreage for filming. Sometime in the late '60's, they had some kind of fair on the property and a fire started and burned out much of that corner. A devlopment company had wanted that corner (facing Verdugo & Hollywood Way) and ended up buying it from Columbia. Ironically, I ended up working at the Alpha Beta that was built on the spot near where my own grandfather had worked as a property manager from the very beginning until 1960. I guess life does ocme with some strange tie ins among family members. But I should note the Three Stooges filmed on that lot and used to come out through the gate on Pass Ave. I don't know if that small gate is even still there. rl

I watched HERE COME THE BRIDES re-runs on Los Angeles television as a kid, just when Bobby Sherman's teen idol popularity peaked. Although based on a part of American history HERE COME THE BRIDES, just like the musical SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS, was also inspired by the Roman legend of "the capture of the Sabine women"; a situation of too many bachelors and not enough females to go around.

As teenaged girls we didn’t get sent the little Nielsen ratings books to fill out. However, many of us signed petitions to keep it on the air!

10 the show is set shortly after the civil war, as was mentioned in the pilot; 2) the Bolt brothers owned a lumber company and aaron Stempel owned the lumber mill; 3) Mark Lenard played Sarek before being cast in HCTB; 4) the show was canceled by Leonard Goldberg (of Spelling/Goldberg Productions) when he became head of ABC and canceled many of his predecessor''s shows. While the show had gone down in ratings and was on the bubble, pre-production had begun on a third season. The source for most of my information ismy friend the late Joanie Winston, a former executive at ABC at the time. Interestingly enough, Joanie and her friends ran the first Star Trek cons and wrote 2 books about Star Trek - Star Trek Lives and The Making of a Star Trek Convention

The classic example of a handsome man vs a pretty boy (no disrespect intended). I really enjoyed this series, although it's odd to think of this as taking place in the 1890's instead of the late 1860's. The women's clothes and hats seem based on styles of the late 1860's - early 1870's. One episode featured the famed singer Jenny Lynd who died in 1887, before the supposed 1890's time-frame. Anyway, let's suspend our disbelief and enjoy the series lol. Even as a kid I saw Joan Blondell in movies from the 30's, 40's & 50's so I enjoyed seeing her in this series.

The series' rating fell not due to timeslot -- the core audience of young females would have followed the show wherever it landed -- but b/c they married off some of the key Brides beginning late in Season 1, effectively taking them out of the potential hookup mix among the cast and limiting possible story lines. The audience weren't there for the history or drama of a conventional Western (which format was all but dead anyway by 1970), but for the romantic plotlines and mystery that could prevail between a large cast of good-looking, unmarried people.

Adding those two kids - as Candy's little brother and sister - ruined so many of the episodes. There was no reason why the second series had to focus mainly on them, and their relationship with Candy, and not concentrate more on any of the Bolt brothers actually getting married. Fans were so hoping to see Jeremy and Candy get married...but it never happened, due to concentrating way too much on those two kids. That probably turned a lot of die-hard fans off of the show. Stupid producers and directors and network execs ruined what was an excellent series.

@@FactsVerse That's a hard one. I think maybe the one where that guy gets killed because the workers were goofing around. It had a good moral and was very emotional.

I wish you had mentioned the name of the actor who played Captain Clancy. I have been trying to remember his name for quite some time, but nobody ever mentions him. I remember watching the series in afterschool reruns.
