I grew up in Ann Arbor. Lived in Ann Arbor for 24 years and went to Ann Arbor public schools. You don’t realize how privileged you are until you move away to a location that has none of these features. I miss it.
I came from Senegal Africa to Ann Arbor and I was extremely lucky to end up in Ann Arbor. The schools are very diverse and the people are amazing. I didn’t realize how privileged I was to live in Ann Arbor until just a few years ago. I also work for University of Michigan hospital. Which is an amazing place.
This has to be satire. You have got to be kidding me. I used to get free American flag tshirts as a student and I'd wear them around campus to class. Almost like those Captain America shirts you see today. Wasn't until junior or senior year that I realized that ultra-liberal people hate America and the flag and that this was probably why I was getting bad grades. I even had a "journalist" from the Michigan Daily rip my shirt...this dude was rich, from Traverse City and dressed like a homeless person everyday. I'm not exaggerating. There were some trash people in that city, I swear to God.

Also, a more relevant comparison to make would be whole foods vs meijers or target vs meijers, because meijers is a michigan company and there are 2 meijers and 0 walmarts around ann arbor. The closest walmart is in Saline now that the Ellsworth walmart is closed. Stores that are considered dirty aren't allowed in ann arbor. No strip clubs, no walmarts, mcdonalds only on the edge of town, as few gas stations in town as possible, etc. There are probably close to 50 miles of creeks that are now running under-ground because ann arbor polluted them so much they'd rather pay to hide them, lmao. Both Mallets Creek and Allen Creek are underground for most of their course, as well as parts of Traver Creek and likely others I haven't heard of.
I love Ann Arbor, and as a season ticket holder I don’t mind football traffic …. But there was a time as a student where I had to go to the stores by the freeway during football Saturday and got stuck for hours. I would definitely have no problem living in Ann Arbor but there are some drawbacks that come with living in a medium-small town that explodes in population every fall due to the Highly regarded university. Definitely unique, I have not seen a similar college town in Michigan.
Ironically Ann Arbor and Tampa are the same in home prices. The biggest difference is that you get way more house in Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor is definitely a cool town. College aside. Would love to live in Ann Arbor someday since this city reminds me of my hometown in (Special Region of) Yogyakarta, Indonesia. There are many similarities between Ann Arbor and Yogya. Yogya is known as a city of education, a city of culture, and is famous for its hospitality. Thousands of students from all over the country study in there, as there are many good and renowned universities. The city is also one of the most visited tourist destinations by foreign tourists.
They are doing a good job of pushing farms out. I want to convince my dad to move I love farming but there is no future near ann arbor. I'm going to be the 5th generation farmer but everything is going to houses
I Agree. We live north of Joy Rd east of US23 and the development pressure is building up. I think that most farms close to A2 unfortunately have a limited future.
I thought I have seen a lot of this beautiful city, but I haven’t, even though I have been living in Michigan for 18 years. The traffic going back and forth between Lansing and Ann Arbor can be a hassle, considering the roads constrictions of 2024 🙄 😂but I am glad I finally gotten an opportunity to get to this place this year. 😊

imo, ann arbor has some of the nicest churches, too. The Down Town Lutheran church, which goes by Bethlehem United, St Paul's, St Andrew's, First Methodist, First Baptist, First Congregational and a few in the surrounding area are absolute works of art. There are also a lot of private schools, of all forms. waldorf/steiner schools, regular high end private schools like green hills and emerson, and 3 flavors of catholic school, 2 flavors of protestant school, homeschooling programs, and a jewish school.
What about the "Live Music Scene" meaning Folk clubs, blues, rock, and punk bars? anybody have any info? and yes I am a professional musician- looking for a hometown to gig, and set up my recording studio.
on the topic of briarwood- it's not a very "mall-y" mall, and it's on its way out. The food court is virtually non-existent (and even mall staples like Auntie Anne's are starting to pull out in favor of Meijer), it's lost quite a few anchor stores, even the Apple store is planning on moving out. I heard there's been a proposal to turn part of the mall into affordable housing (which would be VERY cool), but strictly as a mall, it's probably one of the worst in Metro Detroit.
I know this may sound like an oddball opinion, but Ann Arbor has been increasingly starting to not appeal as much as it used to, but there are still plenty of pros. The food and nature areas especially are still excellent. The public school experiences vary whether K-12 students get regular classes, IB, or AP classes, but most people there graduate and are prepared for college. The biggest con of Ann Arbor is that it's increasingly getting too expensive for its own good. Even middle class residents are starting to feel priced out. Granted, the downtown still has more to do than where I live in Lansing, but there's other places in Michigan that are less expensive with the same or more things to do.
@@rockmegently Probably Grand Rapids, but that city lacks the small town feel. Kalamazoo also has some theatre options and appears to be growing. Not a fan of Lansing - but I could be slightly biased because MSU is there😂.
I was a student at UMICH and lived in Ann Arbor for a couple of years. I really enjoyed my stay there. Sports, concerts, museums there were plenty of things to see and do. Chances are you could find others there. with similar interests. We students didn’t have much to do with “townies”. After I graduated I kind of wanted to move back but my work sent me elsewhere altogether I returned for sports events and concerts. On the down side, traffic is awful and getting around is a pain and forget it on a football Saturday. Politics there are beyond liberal- they call it the People’s Republic of Ann Arbor for a reason.
The insane thing is, it's getting WORSE! It used to be Midwestern liberal and tolerable, now they've gone straight Cali, Berkeley liberal and have lost their minds.

Just the other day I was looking at home prices there and wishful thinking, planning for my eventual retirement. But as much as I love U of M, I could never live in such a liberally brainwashed place. 😔
AA is a nice town. On the down side, not only are real estate prices high; but thanks to the property tax breaks U of M enjoys, everone else needs to cover the city's real estate tax shortfall - so be very careful when figuring the budget impact of your housing - ouch.

I would say no one is still in love with Ann Arbor if they have tried to contact their local repersentatives. If you live in A2, contact your council member and find out how much they care or will even respond to your concerns. Larcom city hall is no longer for the people and is now only for corporations interest. Also the toxic plum spreading through the water table, talking about you ward 1 and 2 soon to be 3, you will not enjoy A2 as much.

Definitely Target over Walmart but what about Trader Joe’s? Need to be within driving distance of one. That probably narrows it down to AA, Detroit or Grand Rapids.
If you can afford ann arbor, there probably isn't a better place to be in the country to raise a family, or if you're just an adult who likes fine arts in all its forms.
Honestly, I dont really like ann arbor. It used to be good when I was a teenager, but now the taxes are way too high. Affordability is was too high as well. The quirkiness that used to be its charm has started to fade away into common corporatism. Ann Arbor has pretty much lost its uniqueness and became like every other college town.
I know what you’re saying. It’s lost some of that “kiss my ass” quirkiness it used to have. It’s becoming more corporate. What I do like is how all the houses are different. There is no Leavitt-town look about it; in other words, it’s not like the White-Bread houses in suburbia. It has a crazy, slap-in-face of “here I am, now kiss my ass,” type of housing. Yes the housing here definitely has character. What I like the most is the oddball bookstores it has. The kind of bookstores that stock ‘off-the-wall’ intellectual literature that would curl the pubic hair of the establishment. In other words, it would make Border’s Book store appear elementary. I’m in and out of Ann Arbor at least once a month for culture events, book buying and food. I live in a lizard and brain-dead community North of Detroit and Ann Arbor caters to my intellectual cravings. Love Ann Arbor. Hope it doesn’t become too commercialized.
I appreciate your video, and I’ve lived all over the US and Europe, and I just arrived to the area about a month ago. It is truly my least favorite place I’ve ever lived. The people are nice and my neighborhood is diverse, I’ll give it that. One of my favorite things to do when I arrive to a new and strange place is ride my bicycle, but it’s the worst cycling I’ve experienced. Flat, straight roads, terrible infrastructure and road design, and even worse drivers.
Yes and people moving out of big cities to Ann arbor is just making things more expensive!, one man I met in a rural area area who owns several acres told my friend what he paid in taxes and it was insane compared to smaller southern Michigan communities!, if anything their people moving out of Ann arbor to smaller communities Like hillsdale and Lenewee counties

Recently retired after 25 years in the Army and looking settle down and plant some roots back in my home state of MI. Looking for a place within an hour of Ann Arbor as I plan to put my G.I Bill and education benefits to use. I live in Ann Arbor I think is overrated if Ann Arbor is the best to live in USA I imagine the rest of places must be dreadful but is all about what one is used to. Americans standards are poor jobs are easy plent of educate people if that is what impresses you good as for houses apartments are tiny most advertise luxury apartments and they not luxury not even for a poor country. Being a resident in and outside of A2 since 1975, A2 is a great city to live outside of and now that I'm retired it is an even better place to live outside of. PF forgot Busch's, Plum Market, Trader Joe's and Aldi for groceries etc., Kerrytown for the ambiance, stores, and Farmer's Market. Unfortunately most of my favorite wine shops are no longer. I am not a fan of the repurposed streets, some of which with the added parking are no wider than alley ways. UofM is slowly swallowing up downtown housing. South U is totally changed beyond recognition and outside developers have turned the campus area into highrise student housing. The combined Art Fair is a great reason to be as far away from A2 as possible during that time. Hill Auditorium has acoustical problems but is a very good venue for concerts. MHS is an institution. The AA Symphony along with The Ark should be supported as they are culturally significant as is the AA Film Festival.
@jessica9019 winters can be heavy and very hard on your car. The roads with the freezing and thawing get lots of pot holes. They salt the roads here, too , causing corrosion and rust on your car. If you move into a house, make sure you purchase a generator, you'll probably need it with all the power outages we get here, (summer time too, with the thunderstorms and tornado watches). Had my power out for 8 days this winter when it was low 20's outside, and the summer before the power was out for days too with the temp high 80's and low 90's with high humidity. The weather is a thing here, just make sure you are prepared for it and it is fine.

LAST YEAR, AFTER 35 YEARS IN JAMAICA, I WENT BACK TO VISIT ANN ARBOR. I FOUND ONLY ONE ROOM TO RENT--AT THE EMBASSY HOTEL. $270/WK --GREAT LOCATION, BUT THE BEDBUGS WERE MUCH TOO MUCH. CAN YOU RECOMMEND A BETTER PLACE TO STAY FOR ONE MONTH?
@@zollar98 it is one of the best places to be homeless in the midwest, though. Lots of free food, free tents, etc. just not a lot of places to put them now that they're developing everywhere. I imagine there's a good number of them off liberty, by the highway.
Its a white collar/academia haven. Most of the people who work retail/service jobs in AA cannot afford to live within city limits. People here are full of Hubris and the vibe is a mix of snooty rich students and lefty feminized hipster types. It’s one of the most economically segregated cities in the nation. The AA/Ypsilanti divide is real. The parks here are nice but they’ve recently added huge BLM murals in front of some of the most popular play structures for your children to be indoctrinated. As long as you have lots of money and lean hard left this place is very inclusive.
Nailed it. I keep telling people around the state this and they think I'm crazy. The Wal-Mart Wolverines are the worst. I keep reading that they're trying to ban gas everything here. They're absolutely out of their minds. It's a very beautiful town that looks like it would be awesome to live in, but the first day you move here, you're going to realize what a huge mistake you made.
So you need a car to get to Detroit? On Google Earth it looks like the train station only has a single track. Not even a track for each direction. That seems like a downside for me from a European perspective. In a perfect city you should not need a car. Still Ann Arbor seems like a good place to live by American standards.

I know Americans love their cars, but even people who will never use public transport profit from it a lot, because public transport takes a lot of car off the road. So people who drive will not be stuck in traffic jams that often.
You can take the train to Detroit via the Amtrak station, but it will cost around $14 round trip. There is also the Airbust that takes several trips back and forth to Detroit several times a day.
Snooty? Yeah, it does have a tendency to side-track away from lizard-brain(ed) people. I haven’t had too much problem with AA. Perhaps because I think like them. I salivate when I pass by independent bookstores. My brain is hungry; it wants to be fed intellectual goodies. Do you think I can get this in a White-Bread, BE-ME suburbia? Perhaps that is why AA slips away from the norm. It’s trying hard not to be normal; so it shies away from White-Bread thinking people.

Definitely Target over Walmart but what about Trader Joe’s? Need to be within driving distance of one. That probably narrows it down to AA, Detroit or Grand Rapids.
If you can afford ann arbor, there probably isn't a better place to be in the country to raise a family, or if you're just an adult who likes fine arts in all its forms.
Honestly, I dont really like ann arbor. It used to be good when I was a teenager, but now the taxes are way too high. Affordability is was too high as well. The quirkiness that used to be its charm has started to fade away into common corporatism. Ann Arbor has pretty much lost its uniqueness and became like every other college town.
I know what you’re saying. It’s lost some of that “kiss my ass” quirkiness it used to have. It’s becoming more corporate. What I do like is how all the houses are different. There is no Leavitt-town look about it; in other words, it’s not like the White-Bread houses in suburbia. It has a crazy, slap-in-face of “here I am, now kiss my ass,” type of housing. Yes the housing here definitely has character. What I like the most is the oddball bookstores it has. The kind of bookstores that stock ‘off-the-wall’ intellectual literature that would curl the pubic hair of the establishment. In other words, it would make Border’s Book store appear elementary. I’m in and out of Ann Arbor at least once a month for culture events, book buying and food. I live in a lizard and brain-dead community North of Detroit and Ann Arbor caters to my intellectual cravings. Love Ann Arbor. Hope it doesn’t become too commercialized.
I appreciate your video, and I’ve lived all over the US and Europe, and I just arrived to the area about a month ago. It is truly my least favorite place I’ve ever lived. The people are nice and my neighborhood is diverse, I’ll give it that. One of my favorite things to do when I arrive to a new and strange place is ride my bicycle, but it’s the worst cycling I’ve experienced. Flat, straight roads, terrible infrastructure and road design, and even worse drivers.

Yes and people moving out of big cities to Ann arbor is just making things more expensive!, one man I met in a rural area area who owns several acres told my friend what he paid in taxes and it was insane compared to smaller southern Michigan communities!, if anything their people moving out of Ann arbor to smaller communities Like hillsdale and Lenewee counties

I live in Ann Arbor I think is overrated if Ann Arbor is the best to live in USA I imagine the rest of places must be dreadful but is all about what one is used to. Americans standards are poor jobs are easy plent of educate people if that is what impresses you good as for houses apartments are tiny most advertise luxury apartments and they not luxury not even for a poor country. Not a pet friendly city people are not usually friendly roads are bad here I really don’t like it is not my kind of city and is ver very small

Being a resident in and outside of A2 since 1975, A2 is a great city to live outside of and now that I'm retired it is an even better place to live outside of. PF forgot Busch's, Plum Market, Trader Joe's and Aldi for groceries etc., Kerrytown for the ambiance, stores, and Farmer's Market. Unfortunately most of my favorite wine shops are no longer. I am not a fan of the repurposed streets, some of which with the added parking are no wider than alley ways. UofM is slowly swallowing up downtown housing. South U is totally changed beyond recognition and outside developers have turned the campus area into highrise student housing. The combined Art Fair is a great reason to be as far away from A2 as possible during that time. Hill Auditorium has acoustical problems but is a very good venue for concerts. MHS is an institution. The AA Symphony along with The Ark should be supported as they are culturally significant as is the AA Film Festival.

@jessica9019 winters can be heavy and very hard on your car. The roads with the freezing and thawing get lots of pot holes. They salt the roads here, too , causing corrosion and rust on your car. If you move into a house, make sure you purchase a generator, you'll probably need it with all the power outages we get here, (summer time too, with the thunderstorms and tornado watches). Had my power out for 8 days this winter when it was low 20's outside, and the summer before the power was out for days too with the temp high 80's and low 90's with high humidity. The weather is a thing here, just make sure you are prepared for it and it is fine.
Considering moving to AnnArbor from the west coast. The only thing that concerns us is the weather. 🥶🥶

@@zollar98 it is one of the best places to be homeless in the midwest, though. Lots of free food, free tents, etc. just not a lot of places to put them now that they're developing everywhere. I imagine there's a good number of them off liberty, by the highway.

Its a white collar/academia haven. Most of the people who work retail/service jobs in AA cannot afford to live within city limits. People here are full of Hubris and the vibe is a mix of snooty rich students and lefty feminized hipster types. It’s one of the most economically segregated cities in the nation. The AA/Ypsilanti divide is real. The parks here are nice but they’ve recently added huge BLM murals in front of some of the most popular play structures for your children to be indoctrinated. As long as you have lots of money and lean hard left this place is very inclusive.
Nailed it. I keep telling people around the state this and they think I'm crazy. The Wal-Mart Wolverines are the worst. I keep reading that they're trying to ban gas everything here. They're absolutely out of their minds. It's a very beautiful town that looks like it would be awesome to live in, but the first day you move here, you're going to realize what a huge mistake you made.

So you need a car to get to Detroit? On Google Earth it looks like the train station only has a single track. Not even a track for each direction. That seems like a downside for me from a European perspective. In a perfect city you should not need a car. Still Ann Arbor seems like a good place to live by American standards.
Yep. No one takes a train to Detroit and we don't have a subway system. If you live in the suburbs, you'll definitely need a car.

I know Americans love their cars, but even people who will never use public transport profit from it a lot, because public transport takes a lot of car off the road. So people who drive will not be stuck in traffic jams that often.

You can take the train to Detroit via the Amtrak station, but it will cost around $14 round trip. There is also the Airbust that takes several trips back and forth to Detroit several times a day.

Snooty? Yeah, it does have a tendency to side-track away from lizard-brain(ed) people. I haven’t had too much problem with AA. Perhaps because I think like them. I salivate when I pass by independent bookstores. My brain is hungry; it wants to be fed intellectual goodies. Do you think I can get this in a White-Bread, BE-ME suburbia? Perhaps that is why AA slips away from the norm. It’s trying hard not to be normal; so it shies away from White-Bread thinking people.
