  • Britain's nuclear submarines are so secret they surface only to take on food, and non-operational contact is limited to 120 words. Our Defence Correspondent Alistair Bunkall has met the crew of HMS Vigilant, one of the UK's four Trident nuclear submarines. Read more here trib.al/up0FtIP

There are two. Red is the 'real' one and black for training. They are modeled on US Police Magnum pistols. Much heavier than the little Scalextric controller.

No - missile bodies are US, not sure about launch tubes. Hill, propulsion, control etc are all British although I am sure some US stuff is in non - critical areas. Reactor is entirely British design although the US did help obliquely in the early days. Now there is much more information sharing. Warheads are all British including the plutonium.

50 Ducks In A Hot Tub deterrents maintain stability and in stability a nation thrives, the UK has been cutting back on military spending as the world was becoming more stable now there’s been a significant ramp up in global tensions there must be a build up of our military, before WW2 appeasement was used at the last minute to make time for rearmament and only let the third reich gain more momentum and confidence since then it has been British foreign policy never to bury our heads in the sand again.

to say "there are 17,000 nuclear weapons in the world today, and they represent an extreme threat to the UK", is perhaps a slightly melodramatic statement and a bit naive. During the cold war, which lasted about 44 years, no nuclear bomb was ever fired. I agree the UK needs submarines and ships to fire nuclear weapons to protect the UK, if needed, but . . . well. I said it above.

No impossible - a lot of very complex things need to happen in a very precise sequence for a thermonuclear weapon to detonate.

I think that near to what a dirty bomb is, the nuclear detonation doesn't take place but the conventional explosion would release radioactive material.

Well, it is conceivable but extremely unlikely. It’s more likely that the conventional explosives would go off out of sequence (or only partially) this wouldn’t cause a nuclear explosion but would spread the fissile material around a bit, not quite Hiroshima or Chernobyl but still bad

They can manouvere during their ballistic trajectory in the upper atmosphere so they can hit different targets. Some are not warheads but decoy penetrators to fool anti-missile defences. The exact setup is needless to say stunningly secret.

onetruekeeper there is a letter on board the sub called the letter of last resort or something to that effect. and it is the last official act of HMG. in the event the prime minister is killed and contact cannot be made to mainland UK by the sub. the letter is opened and it states what the prime minister wants the captain to do with the sub. I believe the options available are to hand the sub to another nato country (most likely America) or use the weapon against whoever nuked Britain.
