As others already commented it's absolutely a moron who designed the placement of the battery. The battery has it's lifetime. Maybe you should just throw out the computer after 3 or 4 years when the battery dies. Absolutely insane. I will not go for an Acer again after this.
+Claus Holde I agree. I have a Dell inspiron 1545 and you need to strip the whole laptop just to replace the cmos battery on the motherboard. It's mad. The manufacturer obviously wants you to fork out for a new laptop.
+Claus Holde acer 9420 is not any better. The same is true for my old 17" Inspiron. Too bad it's hard to get a ITX motherboard to put back to good use al the working pieces from the two laptops.
They don't give a S**t they just want you to buy another so this strategy works for them. Regular modern big biz please the shareholders screw all else strategy.
I actually started laughing half way through this as I simply could not believe how many more screws and connectors had to be removed before you were going to get to the CMOS battery. Man, you sure have got some practical skills up your sleeves. Did you ever work in the IT industry or did you just think you'd have a go one day? I sure would love to see what happens if some others try this .... LOL. I wouldn't try it in a million years but I absolutely have to take my hat off to you Chez. That was one heck of an achievement. Bravo my friend!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Kev, I had been meaning to do this for years but kept putting it off as I knew it was difficult LOL. Never worked in the IT industry but I have built several computers and upgraded them since my first one in 1999. Computers look more difficult than they actually are as everything is modular, so can only go back in one place etc. Thanks for the comment ;-)
I did that that in just 2 minutes! At 17:24 white connector is visible on the very top into the harddisk tray. How to do: Just screw on the back open and remove the cover, like shown in this brilliant video until 1:28. Unplug white connector you find into the harddisk tray (look 17:24 for it at the very top of harddisk trays, it is white, very good visible there) and plug new battery in. Leave old battery inside if its not leaking. Connect new battery, leave it in Harddisk tray or isolate it and route it towards center of Laptop and glue it down. Like that it will be a 2 minutes job. Ultimeate Handyman, brilliant video. If you really need to get out old leaking battery, this is the way to go in easy, well explained steps. Loved it!! Thank you!
thanks for the video, it helped me deciding NOT to change the battery. who in a sane state of mind at Acer decided to hide the cmos battery in such a way?
I'm gonna second that. Luckily, by the time my CMOS battery died this Acer laptop was no longer my primary machine. So, no thanks, not worth the hassle
Thank you very much for the detailed showings. Not one screw and not one cable left over ;-) The notebook runs fine after the operation. This was the best repair-video I have ever seen.
Great intructional video, but don't waste your time and risk your laptop because of the stupid cmos battery. Changed mine today in 2 minutes. Get a battery + cable and just unplug the old battery left of the HD slot, plug in the new one and place it on top of the HD, fits perfectly and works. The old battery remains unplugged inside.
+FlyingFish That comment saved my day! I now partly used that method on my Aspire 1410. I just had to remove two screws and a plastic door. There I saw the battery holder which was fastened to a circuit board by a sticker which easily stuck to my screwdriver. I cut up the plastic isolation from around the battery and bended the soldered "tongues" away from the battery. Then I lengthened the cables and connected a new battery to the cables. The batteries were not of the same size but of the same voltage. I hided the battery, away from hot components and put back the door and the two screws. No soldering, only yellow electrical tape (any color will do!). Thanx FlyingFish!
+Martin Josefsson Would you elaborate a bit more please? What 2 screws and door did you remove? I just need to figure out how to locate the battery while removing the least amount of parts. Thanks
+TheBoydTV I don't have the computer here anymore but if I remember correctly the door with the two screws was the one you open when you want to get to the RAM - the door nearest the center of the bottom side. There is no need to be afraid of opening those kinds of doors. That is the easiest part.
Hi, I had the same issue and ran into your tutorial. Great stuff! Amazing that you have to dissasemble the whole laptop. However, I did not want to do that, and found a shortcut. Next to the harddrive is the connector for the CMOS battery. Simply cut the wire there but leave about half an inch of wire on the connector. Use a CR2032 with a long wire and solder the connector to that long wire. Isolate the cut wires to the CMOS battery with a drop of glue or silicone. isolate the soldered wires with tape. I placed the CR2032 in a piece of foam. The whole fits perfectly in the area next to the WIFI board. A 15 minute job.
It was easy to reproduce your way to change the battery. When the whole computer was splitted apart I was affraid I would not be able to put it back so that it would work again, but the whole thing went perfect at the fist time. Thanks a lot, I was mad putting the date again everytime I was starting my computer.
Thank-you. This is the only 8920 cmos install on the net! The instructions are perfect. The closeness of your camera is great because you can really see up close. Great job!
@ fayyaz6 For some reason I can't reply to your comment. I am sure there is plenty I can't do, but I'll have a go at most things. Thanks for the comment
Yowza! Just spent a couple of days updating and cleaning viruses from my friend's Acer Aspire 9410 and knew the CMOS battery was dead (date/time wouldn't change). I found your video. You did a fabulous job, and you make it look so easy! I've decided to leave well enough alone--I was exhausted just from watching! LOL! Thanks for your great video!
Shortcut: 1. Follow these instructions up to 1:26 2. At that point, look next to the hard drive on the left. The connector for the battery is visible on the bottom left end of the hard drive bay. 3. Unplug the connector. 4. Gently tug on the wires until the battery comes unglued. 5. Remove just enough screws from that corner to pry open the side and grab the battery with some needle-nose pliers. 6. Continue at 13:16.
Wow, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I got a little way into this. Luckily, I have the smaller Acer 6920G. After removing the small backplate (6 screws) the battery connector is visible, with the battery mostly hidden. I disconnected it and tugged carefully, and after a while the battery and its sticky pad came free. Like you, I didn't have a CR2032-WRS to hand, but I did have a BR2032 (a slightly longer life CR2032), and I got the connectors to stay in place with a paper clip wrapped tightly in non conducting tape! It worked, so thankfully I didn't have to do what you did, but it's a great video anyway.
That's insane! From now on, I'll always look for some videos about replacing CMOS batteries on a laptop BEFORE deciding for which laptop to buy... We might be stupid. Yeah, they can make us feel like that... but only once.
Spent the entire evening following this video. Glad I didn't watch it first! Fortunately had a DR2032 in the house. Just pulled the old wires off the old battery and taped them to the new one. Only three screws left over when I put it all back together. Today my fingers are still sore but the date on my Acer is now correct - hooray! So many other problems with the computer so thought I had nothing to loose - black screen, certificate error on all websites and Microsoft can't recognise my kosher copy of Windows 7 Ultimate so get no updates. Thank you so much Ultimate Handyman xxx PS I am 61 and female!
It's best to solder wires to new battery. Copper no more 40 Watt. With no acid flux. And insert battery in piece thermo-shrink tube. Warm by lighter. Would be as factory made
Some Acer laptops have rechargeable CMOS batteries so I think you should mention a bit about that too. Instead of taking my Acer Travelmate 8200 apart to get at the RTC CMOS battery, I looked at some photos of the mainboard layout to make sure I could do what I had in mind, then I measured, marked, and cut out a hole in the bottom of the laptop with a box cutter right over where the battery and connector is located......LOL.. It's 8 1/2 years old so no worries about voiding my warranty. It took me about 30 minutes. It worked perfectly for getting at the battery. When I was done, I covered up the hole with duct tape. Who looks at the bottom anyway? They should have built a door on the bottom right over top of the CMOS Battery.....but I guess they expected the laptop to burn out before the battery.
Ultimate Handyman: Please pin "Flo.F's" quick-fix description (below) here at the top. Your description is doubtless good and accurate, but hers gets the job done much more simply. I have a failing CMOS on my Acer and I want to take it to a local shop and have them read her description.
Hi, thanks for the video... but there is other method and more easy. Only you need to remove the lid as you did. The battery is hidden, but accesible. You have to reach it with twizzers. And then, you replace the battery. Put the cover again... and that's it. My college has made this in only 5 minutes. We watched your video and think it will take minimun an hour.
Im glad my ancient aspire was a cinch to change the cmos. In comparison to what youve gone through with that model. Been ten years since I changed the cmos and still works fine. Not to bad for a 12 year old aspire.
You do not need to dissemble the laptop to change the bios battery on this model laptop unless you have two hard drives installed. First take your HD out & place in HD slot two & then you can see in the left hand corner of HD bay one the connector cable that plugs the bios battery into the board , unplug & plug yours in the socket & use double sided sticky tape to fix the bios battery down. So easy !
At 13.43 in your video you plug the bios battery cable into the motherboard , this same white connector is visible in the hard drive bay , if you still have the laptop check for your self .
Doc Mason i did it your way, and everything is working again, with less work. The old battery is still in the laptop, hopefully she is not going to leak?
Great video, just the thing I need right now, cause I have a friend's Aspire 8920G here and the cmos battery is dead. I did this once on a HP laptop, it was just as difficult to replace as this one. But thanks for the video, so now I know what is coming onto me ^^
Thanks a bunch! Had the unfortunate pleasure to do a replacement of a battery on this monstrosity for a friend. This helped me out immensly (but never again, even if my life depended on it)
The CMOS battery is under the motherboard for Z5700 for some crazy reason. You have to undo the heatsink fans and all the screws for the MB to get at it. Undo some screws and lift the MB just enough to replace the battery that's under a bit of black tape. It's not easy but very doable if you know what you're doing. I did it and now it's running fine again.
For those who don't want to replace the battery for some reason. You can also "resolve" the problem by automatically syncing your time. This can be done by for example this application: www.timesynctool.com Worked great for my asus. I do appreciate this video!
I have the same problem with 8930 model, no this not the best solution, because installed software sees this as outdated en every time I have to re-install the codes for my software programs!
For the Aspire 6390G, only take off the keyboard and pad (unscrew all screw from the bottom side. and under the keyboard the plate.thats it, the CMOS battery is direct on top the Motherboard. No need to unscrew and takeout the DISPLAY and Mother board, dont take out the WiFi, dont take out the Harddisk.
This reminds me of the nightmare I had last month replacing the brocken power connector of my MSI notebook, I managed to do it but I think it was more delicate than a brain surgery!
Simply shocking, if I take my old Acer Aspire 1690 to a technician to replace the backup battery, he will charge me at least 50 Dollars... Congratulations for the great work. Putting a door under the notebook to quickly access the battery was too simple for Acer's designers...
I went ahead and did this to my pc, and got forgive me, it took me a while to get it right almost 3 assemblies, because when I put it back together I didn't get a signal on the screen... But it would seem that the video cable leading to the screen had gotten a bit worn because it's gnawed at by the hinges... Crappy Acer design... Taped it up and it worked, hell yeah. All that for a bloody battery change :-D Cheers to you for this video Ultimate Handyman!
In my opinion there is a short and more simple solution. When the backcover is off you can see the little batteryconnector next to the harddrive bays. Just remove the connector and put the new batteryconnector on it. Leave the battery in the drivebay ( only possible when you use only one harddrive).
Absolutely, it's a nightmare job! I'm sure a shop would charge a minimum of £50 to do this. I could not find a video on youtube of how to do it, so hopefully this will help people that want to do it themselves ;-) Thanks for the comment
Great video! I have a problem with 8920g laptop showing incorrect time after upgrading to windows 10 but I don't think I am going to attempt to change cmos battery after watching this!
Thank you ACER to make a CMOS battery change sooooo complicated and sooooo annoying. Didn't you know that the most often repair on a computer can be the CMOS battery after a change of a HDD or the intallation of new devices ?
I loved the video. Where's the dialect from? We had a lad from school he was from Leigh!. he sounded like you. I'm from Ashton -under-lyne and it was a joy listening to the whole video. This is similar to a video for replacing a fan on an HP we have, which we use to watch itvPlayer and BBC iPlayer, needless to say we just paid a local business to do the replacement.
Just had a host of repairs done to one purchased from ebay only to find that the battery is dead! Had I known it was dead, I would have let the repairman sort out the battery too after witnessing the drama involved in replacing it!!! I think I will just live with setting the date after every boot. Two questions. I need to replace the DVD drive. Will I need to employ the routine you used up to the point where you slid out the drive? Second, (unrelated) do you know where I can obtain the screensaver and stock wallpaper for this machine? Installed Windows 10, but I'm that type of guy who likes to make laptops look as factory as possible - even with an upgraded OS.
Yes, I think you will have to remove a fair bit of stuff to get the DVD drive out I'm afraid. I don't know about the screensaver and stock wallpaper- sorry.
I actually don't think you need to dismantle the whole laptop to replace the dvd drive. Look closely at 9:33 in the video, the screw is not even placed under the backplate which comes off first, it can be reached directly after turning the laptop over. Unscrew this screw and the drive should just slide out. At least it did on my HP Laptop I had to open, cause there was dust blocking the ventilation... If you didn't already disassembled the whole thing, it's worth a shot ;) but i know it's been already a week, so I might be too late
For Christ's sake, such a complication just to replace a cmos battery. I wouldn't recommend acer laptop then :) Anyway thanks for sharing the video. Thumbs up....
Holy crap! Having to completely dismantle the laptop to replace a simple CMOS battery is just hilarious and possibly the worst piece of design I have seen in my entire life.
@@ultimatehandyman I have this exact same model and the battery needs replacing. I'm going to carefully follow your instructions and replace it, so many thanks for this epic step-by-step guide. I need to get another battery (my daughter cut the wires on the one I bought off e-Bay....don't ask), but I'll let you know how it all goes!
Thanks a lot. You saved so much of my time. I now decided to leave the date as it is. Why do they hide that battery so deep inside the laptop? !!!. Thanks again :)
wow, My missis has the famous black screen of death on start up, on a acer aspire 5536, Have done all the usual checks. Its either the bios or motherboard.. You can hear everything working but no screen, Fan slows as you try too boot, Anyway flashing bios from a usb stick, won't work as acer have failed too include to .FD file on my machine type, long… SO cannot flash BIOs a famous fault on this type, another issue is Possible Bios battery Issue.. The things 7 years old, If it takes that long to get into it, I just gonna bin it and buy her a MAC, As an IT tech, I actually tell people to buy them now as WINDOWS, frustrates the hell out of me. But ACer OMG what are you doing lol... You have a hell of a lot of patience, Thanks for the video as it fantastic.
Broncosoft Most things like this will only go back together the right way, so it's fairly simple. The hard part is when you take something apart on site on a Friday that you have never taken apart before, then you have to re-assemble it on the Monday. It's common to have a few spare pieces left over on jobs like that LOL
Thank you SO much for this video, it's very helpful. Like! I want to replace CMOS battery myself. Tell me, please, is it necessary to wear that blue bracelet to rebuild any equipment? Can i do this without it?
To be honest, there is only a very small chance of damaging a component by not wearing one (but I have to wear one, or the trolls would get fed ;-) ) Thanks for the comment 👍
Thank you for this! i replaced the battery with your help, much appreciated. Question tho, mine is an Aspire 8930g. I had a computer company work on it and install windows ten now surround sound speakers do not work any thoughts on how to fix?
A DON`T GO THERE JOB. but with this man on your side =a doddle - just give thought and order with patience -ok so the power button did not work on re-assembly - I forgot to insert the power ribbon. A BRILLIANT INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO.
Few days ago, my CMOS battery is out (after more than 10 yrs) and I know how difficult is replacement, but more important things like cleaning of cooler or maintain CPU/GPU are very easy task on this model.
Great video, So much to dismantle for the CMOS battery to be renewed, If ever there was a design flaw this has to be the worst I have seen, As the CMOS battery is connected to the Mother Board by a 2 wired plug, surely the cmos battery could have been located behind an access door under the Laptop, Thus exchanging the cmos battery in 2 minutes, Bad design Acer,,,,.ps I swapped out the cmos battery on my Dell PC in less than 5 mins.
Thanks, it really is a bad design. I also have a Dell alienware and changing the CMOS battery is very easy. It's like they have made it difficult on possible with the Acer. Thanks for the comment ;-)
Thanks, most things can only be put back in the one place but I did it all in a couple of hours. If I had dismantled it one day and gone back to it a week later it might have taken me a little longer! Thanks for the comment
Hello. I changed the battery, it is perfect and the 3.3v reaches the resistor and the diode (BAT54C) without any problem, but however it does not save the configuration when you remove the power. I have changed the resistor, the diode and the capacitor associated with the battery connector, and nothing. Could KBC and/or ICH be the cause of the problem? Thank you.
Is there no easier way for this little element to change it? After watching your very good-made tutorial I asking myself if I cannot remove only the volume-touchpad left from the keyboard.
I had to work on this brand of laptops some time ago, and if you are out of warranty you will have hard time on find replacement parts, because the support seems not able to sell them directly to you, and official repair services it seems are instructed to not repair out of warranty hardware.
That's ridiculous :-0 still that's Acer for you. If you do another video like this Chez can I suggest an intermission of some sort in the middle? You could do a tap dance or something lol!!
thank you very much! you helped me a lot! without this guide to change the CMOS Battery, i would had lost my mind! soooo many screws and cables to disconnect... i did it step by step with your video and changed it successfully😀 now it works perfectly!
Ok, couple of questions: 1) my sister bought a vaio SVF152A29W model. vaio care program asks to update the BIOS. she updates it, then it prompts to restart. After restarting, she just hears couple of noises from fan, few beeps but nothing on screen and then all silent, then again the sounds and noises mentioned will be looped eternally until the battery is removed and popped back in. 2) can she fix the BIOS by removing the cmos battery? 3) If yes, would you be having any idea how easy it is to reach the cmos battery on the mentioned vaio notebook? 4) she has bought it in UAE 7 months ago and it is still under warranty. 5) but she lives in Sweden right now and the Swedish Sony service center is not accepting the warranty. it will cost her something around 150 pounds to fix it. 6) so do you think removing and putting back the cmos battery will reset and fix the BIOS? Thanks in advance
It might work, but it might not! I guess it's worth a try though. You need to get hold of the engineering manual for the laptop, that should show where the CMOS battery is located. On some models there is a CMOS jumper that can be moved to reset the CMOS, so it's worth looking in the manual for that too.
you can buy thin cr2032 battery holders with connecting wires, you then have to join the battery plug wiring to the replacement battery holder wiring, but a robust longterm solution
***** I have the same problem but with another acer machine (aspire 5552) the CMOS batery is easier to replace than in your video. So following your instructions I bought a new battery, replaced the old one but still have same problem.. any suggestions?
Seriously? I have to take apart the whole damn thing just to get to the CMOS battery? This is insane. It's like having to dismantle your entire car just to replace the spark plugs. That's just ridiculous.
Ed Medina I'm sure the manufacturers do it on purpose. When I got my first car you could lift the bonnet, change the battery, alternator or starter motor in 10 minutes or less. Now on modern vehicles they hide them away in the hope that you will take it to the main dealers for repair servicing.
Awesome vid... thanks so much - helped me no end else my laptop would be bricked. Was able to deal with my laptop dead CMOS battery. I have some screen flickering too (many others have reported same) - not sure where that comes from - if you have any insight on the cause I would be most grateful. Most grateful.
That is a crazy amount of effort to replace a cmos battery, I took another brand apart last week to clean the fan and change the thermal paste on the heat sinks, that merited the effort, but this is just a poor design for such a simple part which by it's very nature will require replacement at some time...
Every time devil has nothing to do, he designs a laptop lake this. Unfortunately I already own an Aspire 8930, which aside that ENORMOUS disadvantage is excellent.
have you any idea what could be the reason if this device got stuck and does not boot? i did this nightmare job replacing the battery hoping to help, but did not. i had it running a few days and then only black ... not booting ... everything seems all right, but something is not :(
***** it was absolutely black - only the blue led on, harddisk action but nothing else. no chance to even see bios or any character on screen. . i did something weird (for an engineer :D) - i put the device into my oven at 90 degrees celcius, because i knew that it is temperature related . IT WORKED again . not very stable, means sometimes i need to unplug power again, but then it works and if it is working it is stable working :D . anyway thank you very much for Your reply . can you give me an e-mail related to my question about google monetation? thank You!
Hi, I am having a problem with my Acer Aspire laptop, it isn't charging properly, I have had it sent off to get repaired but still having the same problem. I have had a look under the case and I can see where the guy has done some soldering. I have my own iron and solder but afraid to damage it if I try to do so myself. I would appreciate it if you could make a video of some sort to show how to safely remove the parts to get to the wires, Thank you.
I think most of what you need is covered in this video as it basically removes everything. Are you certain that this is a problem with the soldering and not a faulty battery?
The battery is charging, but when I put the charger inside I have to move it about till I can get the good connection, sometimes the light flickers and doesn't actually charge.
Ryan Ralphs It's a pity the charging module is not modular on this machine, so as you point out it will need soldering. You should be able to get to it easily by watching this video, if you get stuck try searching for the service manual for the exact model number as they sometimes have useful tips ;-)
I think I will have to do this with my acer 6920,,,,,,,, will I have to go thru the same procedure as the laptops do look identical???? My clock needs resetting when I turn Laptop on also there are issues with keyboard recognision and a few other issues.
It's normally a sign that the CMOS battery needs replacing when it loses the time, not sure about the other issues though although they could be related. Once you start to remove the back panels and hard drive/s from the laptop you will know if it's going to be a full strip down if you can't see the CMOS battery at that point. Best of luck with it ;-)
dear great video now I try to change the battery. I have another problem on the same laptop... the screen became dark and if I push Fn+F6 turn on but after 3 seconds (if I put on maximum backlight) turn off, or if I put on minimum luminosity I can work screen go perfectly. I've buyed a new inverter card but not resolve the problem. Another solution? Thanks and best regards Nico
guys BE AWARE some laptopts/netbooks uses rechargeable batteries so before you attempt this better check your batteries and confirm what you need. DO NOT attempt to recharge a non-rechargeable lithium cell. CR2032 in place of ML2032 is a bad bad idea for example eeepc models uses them. if you are desperate for alternative diy solution u can use tiny li-ion/lipo batteries salvaged from old craps, small gear like bluetooth handsfree headset thingies or similar. just remember not to put it in hot spots inside the laptop/netbook and lower the voltage near 3v. everything will be good. 3v wont be super healthy for lipo cell life and cycles either but will be safe and will work fine anyway. thats what i did.
Normally, if the CMOS battery is flat it makes the laptop lose it's time and date settings. But if it has never been replaced in 15 years it might be worth replacing it. Thanks for the comment
Keith leong 賢 Oh, sorry. I thought you were asking which battery was used in this laptop. You will have to check the manual or look at the old battery I'm afraid ;-)
i like your video is very good to fix your laptop.i want to fix my laptop and i want to learn about laptop and desktop computer parts, you should make more video about laptop,i am very pround of you.keep up good work.i am very interested about laptop to fix it.keep make more vide about laptop, thank you make this video for me to learn.
TheOfficialSvengali I know this is like 100 years ago that you posted this but just as an FYI. Yes it will be in the same spot. Some components will be different but most of the Acer Computers are built similarly which means you will have to remove 1. The Battery 2. Back Panel 3. Memory 4. Hard Drive 5. Fan 6. Wireless component 7. Remove the back of the laptop 8. & pretty much take your entire computer apart Acer is the most ridiculous construction just to get to a CMOS battery.
Ed Medina :D Thanks man, but there's a much easier way! Initially, after opening the back case looking at the mother board etc. it looked like i was gonna have to take everything apart because there was a metal like component blocking the way of the CMOS Battery tucked underneath the plastic, but i just lifted the component slightly! and eased my way around it, taking out the dead CMOS Battery & replacing it with the New one! :D fixed & all working now
My friend has the same laptop and I have a problem install new system on it. When I am try boot anything cd, dvd or boot from usb it turn off and restart. Why this happend ? It is not turning off when I am check HDD by MHDD.
My laptop doesnt revert back to its manufacturing date but it doesnt keep the time while its powered off. Think its the cmos battery but not fully sure
what a nightmare, acer aspire 5536 i had was same. only thing i did different to you, was i took the opportunity to clean everything up, replace the fan and heatsink and repasted processor. since doing that, and putting windows 7 on, it works as good as its samsung replacement. so much so, that i kept it and ditched my tower
welcher `smarte` Konstrukteur hat diesen Laptop entwickelt, um die CMOS battery zu erneuern lohnt sich ja ein neues Lappy, besser und vielleicht halb so schwer.
an alternative solution: with a gas burner i heated up the tip of a knife and accurately cut out a 4 mm wide slot in the case right next to the battery plug and pulled out the battery. just don't push the knife too far inside, only a couple of mms.
As others already commented it's absolutely a moron who designed the placement of the battery. The battery has it's lifetime. Maybe you should just throw out the computer after 3 or 4 years when the battery dies. Absolutely insane. I will not go for an Acer again after this.
+Claus Holde Absolutely, they could not have put the battery in a worse place! Thanks for the comment
Thanks Kev,
I had been meaning to do this for years but kept putting it off as I knew it was difficult LOL.
Loved it!! Thank you!
Thanks for the comment 👍
thanks for the video, it helped me deciding NOT to change the battery. who in a sane state of mind at Acer decided to hide the cmos battery in such a way?
*****
You are welcome. I'm sure they purposely made this job as difficult as possible!
Thanks for the comment
I'm gonna second that. Luckily, by the time my CMOS battery died this Acer laptop was no longer my primary machine. So, no thanks, not worth the hassle
Not worth hassle

+Martin Josefsson
Would you elaborate a bit more please? What 2 screws and door did you remove? I just need to figure out how to locate the battery while removing the least amount of parts. Thanks
+TheBoydTV
I don't have the computer here anymore but if I remember correctly the door with the two screws was the one you open when you want to get to the RAM - the door nearest the center of the bottom side. There is no need to be afraid of opening those kinds of doors. That is the easiest part.
+FlyingFish This worked brilliantly - took me 3 minutes. Thanks for saving me an hour FlyingFish.
Great video ultimate handyman.
Thank you for your quick-fix, I'm going to try it.
A 15 minute job.
just be carefull...button batteries can still leak over time...
It was easy to reproduce your way to change the battery. When the whole computer was splitted apart I was affraid I would not be able to put it back so that it would work again, but the whole thing went perfect at the fist time. Thanks a lot, I was mad putting the date again everytime I was starting my computer.
Agustín P. Pieren Pidal
You are welcome.
Thanks for the comment and well done ;-)
Thank-you. This is the only 8920 cmos install on the net! The instructions are perfect. The closeness of your camera is great because you can really see up close. Great job!
@ fayyaz6
For some reason I can't reply to your comment.
Thanks Celia, it's not the kind of job I ever look forwards to doing ever again LOLThanks for the comment
Shortcut:
1. Follow these instructions up to 1:26
Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you got yours sorted ;-)
Thank You very much! From Odessa Ukraine!!! I have the same problem with my 6920 G . And was in horror to see video. You save my soul! Best regards/
That's insane! From now on, I'll always look for some videos about replacing CMOS batteries on a laptop BEFORE deciding for which laptop to buy... We might be stupid. Yeah, they can make us feel like that... but only once.
Yeah, this was a crazy amount of work just to change the CMOS battery!
Thanks for the comment 👍
Well done ;-)
This has to be the worst designed laptop in the world ever!
Thanks for the comment
Ultimate Handyman:
Please pin "Flo.F's" quick-fix description (below) here at the top.
+Ernesto Vega
I look forwards to seeing your video on how to do it.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Im glad my ancient aspire was a cinch to change the cmos. In comparison to what youve gone through with that model. Been ten years since I changed the cmos and still works fine. Not to bad for a 12 year old aspire.
You do not need to dissemble the laptop to change the bios battery on this model laptop unless you have two hard drives installed. First take your HD out & place in HD slot two & then you can see in the left hand corner of HD bay one the connector cable that plugs the bios battery into the board , unplug & plug yours in the socket & use double sided sticky tape to fix the bios battery down.
So easy !
I look forwards to seeing your video of how to do this ;-)
At 13.43 in your video you plug the bios battery cable into the motherboard , this same white connector is visible in the hard drive bay , if you still have the laptop check for your self .
Doc Mason
i did it your way, and everything is working again, with less work. The old battery is still in the laptop, hopefully she is not going to leak?
Great Francois, I have never come across a leaking bios battery.
Thank you for your answer, so, no worries anymore about leaking !
This helped me out immensly (but never again, even if my life depended on it)
It is a nightmare of a job! well done for sorting it for your friend 👍
Thanks for the comment 👍
The CMOS battery is under the motherboard for Z5700 for some crazy reason. You have to undo the heatsink fans and all the screws for the MB to get at it. Undo some screws and lift the MB just enough to replace the battery that's under a bit of black tape. It's not easy but very doable if you know what you're doing. I did it and now it's running fine again.
Just how difficult do they want to make this task????
I think that they just want you to buy a new laptop instead. Well done mate, good job!
For those who don't want to replace the battery for some reason.
You can also "resolve" the problem by automatically syncing your time.
This can be done by for example this application:
www.timesynctool.com
Worked great for my asus.
I do appreciate this video!
I have the same problem with 8930 model, no this not the best solution, because installed software sees this as outdated en every time I have to re-install the codes for my software programs!
Very impressed with your patience and dedication. Next time try it blindfolded.
LOL
Thanks for the comment
For the Aspire 6390G, only take off the keyboard and pad (unscrew all screw from the bottom side. and under the keyboard the plate.thats it, the CMOS battery is direct on top the Motherboard. No need to unscrew and takeout the DISPLAY and Mother board, dont take out the WiFi, dont take out the Harddisk.
This reminds me of the nightmare I had last month replacing the brocken power connector of my MSI notebook, I managed to do it but I think it was more delicate than a brain surgery!
They certainly do not make anything easy!
Thanks for the comment
Simply shocking, if I take my old Acer Aspire 1690 to a technician to replace the backup battery, he will charge me at least 50 Dollars... Congratulations for the great work. Putting a door under the notebook to quickly access the battery was too simple for Acer's designers...
Yeah, they could have made this job a 10 second job, perhaps they design them like this on purpose 🤔
Probably will venture into changing the battery based on this video. Wish me luck. Great video by the way.
Good luck with it, I can't believe they made it so difficult!
You are welcome ;-)
I'm just glad that ACER don't make cars LOL
***** So am I! One thing in my pc was different to yours though. My white cable had to go on nr. 1 on the WIFI and black on nr. 2.
In my opinion there is a short and more simple solution. When the backcover is off you can see the little batteryconnector next to the harddrive bays. Just remove the connector and put the new batteryconnector on it. Leave the battery in the drivebay ( only possible when you use only one harddrive).
I owned this thing. It must have been designed by De Sade, after an INTENSE romp with Torquemada!
My God - what a palaver Chez! All that effort to replace an item costing less than 10p...I wouldn't bother - many thanks for the insight.
Absolutely, it's a nightmare job!
I'm sure a shop would charge a minimum of £50 to do this. I could not find a video on youtube of how to do it, so hopefully this will help people that want to do it themselves ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Great video, thank you very much! Incredible effort to change a simple battery...
You are welcome, Thanks for the comment
One just has to apologize, those things are put together by Chinese women with certainly much smaller fingers then men of European descent! ;-)
Great video! I have a problem with 8920g laptop showing incorrect time after upgrading to windows 10 but I don't think I am going to attempt to change cmos battery after watching this!
+Naz Jiwani
I don't blame you!
Thanks for the comment
Thank you ACER to make a CMOS battery change sooooo complicated and sooooo annoying. Didn't you know that the most often repair on a computer can be the CMOS battery after a change of a HDD or the intallation of new devices ?
Absolutely.
Thanks for the comment
Thank you very much for this detailed and useful video. I changed my cmos battery successfully :)
You are welcome

Wow, you really are the Ultimate Handyman! Great vid chez.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
I loved the video. Where's the dialect from? We had a lad from school he was from Leigh!. he sounded like you. I'm from Ashton -under-lyne and it was a joy listening to the whole video. This is similar to a video for replacing a fan on an HP we have, which we use to watch itvPlayer and BBC iPlayer, needless to say we just paid a local business to do the replacement.
+Ian Ashton
Thanks, I'm from Darwen (between Blackburn and Bolton).
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Awesome vid! How do you taped connectors to the new battery? Is it some kind of heat shrink film or something else?
I covered that here- th-cam.com/video/5DdAZrTZjEM/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the comment ;-)
+soebandi halim Yes, it's crazy!Thanks for the comment ;-)
thanks for great video!!!!
Can I replace the original battery with ordinary CR2032 battery??? What voltage must have the original battery?
Thanks!
+jazepsjazeps It's a common CR2032 battery with 3V. There are other types of batteries used somethimes tho.
Holy crap! Having to completely dismantle the laptop to replace a simple CMOS battery is just hilarious and possibly the worst piece of design I have seen in my entire life.
Yes, this is not a good example of joined up thinking.
Thanks for the comment
@@ultimatehandyman I have this exact same model and the battery needs replacing. I'm going to carefully follow your instructions and replace it, so many thanks for this epic step-by-step guide. I need to get another battery (my daughter cut the wires on the one I bought off e-Bay....don't ask), but I'll let you know how it all goes!
Thanks a lot. You saved so much of my time. I now decided to leave the date as it is. Why do they hide that battery so deep inside the laptop? !!!. Thanks again :)
+penguen6155
You are welcome.
It looks like they do it on purpose to make you take it to them for repair ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Unbelievable
My Acer 6920 no longer keeps correct time.I have the cmos battery but I'll take it to the repair shop after seeing this.
Great video btw.
I don't blame you, it's not the easiest job in the world!
Thanks for the comment ;-)
wow, My missis has the famous black screen of death on start up, on a acer aspire 5536, Have done all the usual checks.
Thanks for the comment
How can you remember where you went all the pieces back in the same place?
You are amazing O_O
Broncosoft
Most things like this will only go back together the right way, so it's fairly simple.
The hard part is when you take something apart on site on a Friday that you have never taken apart before, then you have to re-assemble it on the Monday. It's common to have a few spare pieces left over on jobs like that LOL
***** I am a computer technician (software) and Im can't imagine doing something like that.
You are a greate Handyman :D

Thanks for the comments ;-)
Thank you SO much for this video, it's very helpful. Like!
I want to replace CMOS battery myself. Tell me, please, is it necessary to wear that blue bracelet to rebuild any equipment? Can i do this without it?
To be honest, there is only a very small chance of damaging a component by not wearing one (but I have to wear one, or the trolls would get fed ;-) )
Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman, got it) thanks again!
Thank you for this! i replaced the battery with your help, much appreciated. Question tho, mine is an Aspire 8930g. I had a computer company work on it and install windows ten now surround sound speakers do not work any thoughts on how to fix?
It might just be a software issue, have you tried going to Control panel/sound?
Thanks for the comment 👍
Ultimate Handyman I’ll try I have to take it apart again now screen is black😥
A DON`T GO THERE JOB. but with this man on your side =a doddle - just give thought and order with patience -ok so the power button did not work on re-assembly - I forgot to insert the power ribbon. A BRILLIANT INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO.
I'm glad the video helped and well done for having a go yourself ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Few days ago, my CMOS battery is out (after more than 10 yrs) and I know how difficult is replacement, but more important things like cleaning of cooler or maintain CPU/GPU are very easy task on this model.
Thanks for the comment 👍
Perfect, thank´s for this Video, it was a very great help for me
I'm glad the video helped
Thanks for the comment
Thanks for the comment ;-)
amazing video did you take a note of where each part was located before hand?
Thanks, most things can only be put back in the one place but I did it all in a couple of hours. If I had dismantled it one day and gone back to it a week later it might have taken me a little longer!
Thanks for the comment
👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼👍🏼 great video. To replace a CMOS battery the trouble you have to go through 😁
Yeah, they could make it a lot easier
Thanks for the comment 👍
Thank you.
We can all thanks the genius engineers at Acer for this :)
Too true!
Thanks for the comment
well they do it so the non tech savvy think the laptop is fucked and just go buy another...it's good business!!
I did it !
Many, many thanks for your video
Well done ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Is there no easier way for this little element to change it? After watching your very good-made tutorial I asking myself if I cannot remove only the volume-touchpad left from the keyboard.
I'm afraid this laptop is very difficult to work on, it seems they have intentionally designed it this way!
I had to work on this brand of laptops some time ago, and if you are out of warranty you will have hard time on find replacement parts, because the support seems not able to sell them directly to you, and official repair services it seems are instructed to not repair out of warranty hardware.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Dissemble entire laptop in order to change cmos battery!!! Acer must be crazy!!! Anyway good video - thks!
I'm glad I don't have to do this every day ;-)
Thanks for the comment 👍
That's ridiculous :-0 still that's Acer for you.
If you do another video like this Chez can I suggest an intermission of some sort in the middle? You could do a tap dance or something lol!!

Ok, couple of questions:
1) my sister bought a vaio SVF152A29W model. vaio care program asks to update the BIOS. she updates it, then it prompts to restart.
👍
***** I have the same problem but with another acer machine (aspire 5552) the CMOS batery is easier to replace than in your video. So following your instructions I bought a new battery, replaced the old one but still have same problem.. any suggestions?
Can you describe the exact fault?
Seriously? I have to take apart the whole damn thing just to get to the CMOS battery? This is insane. It's like having to dismantle your entire car just to replace the spark plugs. That's just ridiculous.
Ed Medina
I'm sure the manufacturers do it on purpose.

I'm not sure about the screen flickering, sorry.
That is a crazy amount of effort to replace a cmos battery, I took another brand apart last week to clean the fan and change the thermal paste on the heat sinks, that merited the effort, but this is just a poor design for such a simple part which by it's very nature will require replacement at some time...

Yes, they could have made this job 100 times easier!

Every time devil has nothing to do, he designs a laptop lake this. Unfortunately I already own an Aspire 8930, which aside that ENORMOUS disadvantage is excellent.

Thanks for the comment 👍
have you any idea what could be the reason if this device got stuck and does not boot? i did this nightmare job replacing the battery hoping to help, but did not. i had it running a few days and then only black ... not booting ... everything seems all right, but something is not :(
It could be a few things, but very hard to pin point the exact cause.
Have you tried looking in the BIOS?
***** it was absolutely black - only the blue led on, harddisk action but nothing else. no chance to even see bios or any character on screen.
.
i did something weird (for an engineer :D) - i put the device into my oven at 90 degrees celcius, because i knew that it is temperature related
.
IT WORKED again
.
not very stable, means sometimes i need to unplug power again, but then it works and if it is working it is stable working :D
.
anyway thank you very much for Your reply
.
can you give me an e-mail related to my question about google monetation?
thank You!
Solved by tightening the cooler plate upon the GPU, which was loose and therefore got too hot immediatly and avoided normal operation. :D
I have a problem with my Aspire 8930G where my subwoofer doesn't work anymore, do you know how to repair, or if there's any spares of it?
You can normally buy a replacement speaker module, it will show in the engineering manual where it is ;-)
Hi, I am having a problem with my Acer Aspire laptop, it isn't charging properly, I have had it sent off to get repaired but still having the same problem.
Ryan Ralphs
It's a pity the charging module is not modular on this machine, so as you point out it will need soldering. You should be able to get to it easily by watching this video, if you get stuck try searching for the service manual for the exact model number as they sometimes have useful tips ;-)
Ok, i'll give it a go, thank you
I think I will have to do this with my acer 6920,,,,,,,, will I have to go thru the same procedure as the laptops do look identical????
My clock needs resetting when I turn Laptop on also there are issues with keyboard recognision and a few other issues.
It's normally a sign that the CMOS battery needs replacing when it loses the time, not sure about the other issues though although they could be related.
Once you start to remove the back panels and hard drive/s from the laptop you will know if it's going to be a full strip down if you can't see the CMOS battery at that point.
Best of luck with it ;-)

Took a carpenter knife I cut the hole around - 5min action 😁
Can't post picture in a comment

Sure, if you exactly know where they hid this damn 50 Cent battery! ;-)
dear great video now I try to change the battery.
I have another problem on the same laptop... the screen became dark and if I push Fn+F6 turn on but after 3 seconds (if I put on maximum backlight) turn off, or if I put on minimum luminosity I can work screen go perfectly. I've buyed a new inverter card but not resolve the problem.
Another solution?Thanks and best regards
Nico
Hi Nico, I'm not sure about that problem, sorry.
Perhaps you could try asking in a computer forum?
Thanks for the comment
guys BE AWARE some laptopts/netbooks uses rechargeable batteries so before you attempt this better check your batteries and confirm what you need.
With my 15 year old Aspire 3000, i only have problem storing display brightness level when plugged off. Can replacing cmos battery help?
Normally, if the CMOS battery is flat it makes the laptop lose it's time and date settings.
But if it has never been replaced in 15 years it might be worth replacing it.
Thanks for the comment

Oh, sorry. I thought you were asking which battery was used in this laptop.
You will have to check the manual or look at the old battery I'm afraid ;-)

It is the hope of the designer that by the time you’ve removed all the screws and cables, your CMOS battery would no longer be a major problem.
You are not wrong 😂
Thanks for the comment 👍
Would this be the Same for the Acer Aspire 6920G?
Sorry, I do not know.
Hopefully it will not be this difficult!
See No Brains comment. It's very easy!
TheOfficialSvengali I know this is like 100 years ago that you posted this but just as an FYI. Yes it will be in the same spot. Some components will be different but most of the Acer Computers are built similarly which means you will have to remove
1. The Battery
2. Back Panel
3. Memory
4. Hard Drive
5. Fan
6. Wireless component
7. Remove the back of the laptop
8. & pretty much take your entire computer apart
Acer is the most ridiculous construction just to get to a CMOS battery.
:D fixed & all working now
hi, may I know what type cmos battery is used? Is it CR2032?
Yes it is
Thanks for the comment 👍

You are welcome

My friend has the same laptop and I have a problem install new system on it. When I am try boot anything cd, dvd or boot from usb it turn off and restart. Why this happend ? It is not turning off when I am check HDD by MHDD.
It could be a few things, I'm not a PC expert so it might be best if you ask someone else ;-)
My laptop doesnt revert back to its manufacturing date but it doesnt keep the time while its powered off. Think its the cmos battery but not fully sure
It's probably the cmos battery ;-)
amazing works!
Think the morel of this story is don't buy an acer coputer
You have to wonder if they made it this difficult to replace the CMOS battery deliberately! Thanks for the comment
After seeing you fix your lap-top, it wasn't that hard.
And I need the part that holds the screen, the lid parts.
what a nightmare, acer aspire 5536 i had was same. only thing i did different to you, was i took the opportunity to clean everything up, replace the fan and heatsink and repasted processor. since doing that, and putting windows 7 on, it works as good as its samsung replacement. so much so, that i kept it and ditched my tower
I love my tower, no laptop will ever replace it LOL
Thanks for the comment ;-)
They are crazy!
an alternative solution: with a gas burner i heated up the tip of a knife and accurately cut out a 4 mm wide slot in the case right next to the battery plug and pulled out the battery. just don't push the knife too far inside, only a couple of mms.

I'm in shock. Not one item of PPE in sight!!!
And before you say - no the anti-static wrist band doesn't count ;-)
LOL ;-)
Its a dead machine - what PPE do you really need, and yes the anti-static band IS the most important thing to use here.
great video!
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Just want to put a new battery in it. Will this effect the date?
Yes, you will have to re-enter the date when you first boot up after replacing the battery.
