I was hesitant to medicate my son, but the Pediatrician put it this way 'the jails are full of young adults that weren't treated as kids and found other ways to cope' well played doc, well played. He's an intelligent, kind, well adjusted 9 yr old now. Not one regret with our choice.
and the streets are full of young adults who are hooked on pills because they've been medicated their whole lives and adderal is basically meth. Poor kids never get a chance to be themselves because they're zombified by pills... i wish him and you luck
My cousin was diagnosed with ADHD and was given meds and then started using amphetamines and fatherd a child with a one night stand. There are natural supplements you can take and therapies. There is no need to give children medical grade amphetamines.
One element of ADHD is hyper-focus. I was in my 50s before I was diagnosed. My doctors and I determined through my past history I was able to work hyperfocus to my advantage in most cases. I was a successful engineer but never obtained a degree as I could not focus on subjects that bored me. My symptoms are classic. I'm 70 now and used medication my last 15 year of working to remain functional.
hey, I don't have my degree too but still a better engineer than most of i know but still having problems focusing on tasks. I have one question, did medication help at work? how is dealing with tasks ? I was diagnosed with ADHD few weeks ago, and i'm just wondering about how medication would affect my life as i'm still not taking it
Hey, Im 21 years old now, im in my second year of computer engineering, previously in my academic life I had always gotten full marks on everything just because I usually concentrated a hundred percent in classes and that way I could remember everything until exams happened, I never felt any need to study or even open the syllabus. But now I'm in University and its going horribly, Im basically failing everything, I cant attend any class because I just never feel interested enough to concentrate for more than 15 minutes. This major wasn't my first choice at all, but since I had no other interests when it came to my major I just opted to choose this one because it felt safest. The majors that I were interested in were Psychology and anything that wouldve made me a teacher, more specifically a high school teacher. I've noticed this "Hyper-focus" thing throughout my life but I always called Tunnel Vision, or i just thought i could concentrate well. I just want to know if what I explained has anything to do with ADHD or any other mental disorder because my academic life is being ruined and I dont know what I can even do about it. I hope you read this.
@@exo7326 So you're not interested in your lectures at all? Don't keep spending money on school if you don't want to do your major! If it's not interesting when you're getting new info in class every day, it's not going to be interesting in the work world when you have to do similar tasks over and over.
My daughter was diagnosed in her early thirties, Was a honor role student all through school, not physically hyper, although as an adult I can see her verbal hyperactivity. Now suffers from deppression and anxiety. In her I can see how one may trigger the other in ways. She is on medication for both deppression and ADHD, struggling but it's a work in progress.
I relate with this. I’ve grew up all my life with straight A’s , perfect attendance and honor roll. Now as an adult at 30, it’s all going downhill. I feel anxious, depressed and suspect I may also have adhd. My friends and family are also noticing and suspecting this as well. I hope I can get this all sorted out with professional help.
Diagnosed at age 40. I wish I had been tested as a kid. I did well in school but it was a struggle. Everything took me a lot longer than most people because I’d get distracted and have to re-read everything constantly. I wasn’t hyperactive in the physical sense but my mind is
I relate to that too! As a kid I was misdiagnosed with autism and I don’t think I got the actual help I needed in school because of that. I was actually distracted and also had to read the same thing over and over again to get the questions right. I was stressed in school because of that and it made me anxious. I also loose things all the time. I was quiet in school because I had trouble focusing on tasks in school and that’s why I only tried to focus on my work and not really socialize. But it was stressful trying to focus in school especially in math class omg that was really stressful in math because you would have to remember formulas n stuff and I had trouble with that too.
At least I explained to my mom about it and she’s going to take me to a doctor so I can get diagnosed properly as an adult so I can get the actual help I need.
My son was diagnosed when he was five. I fought it but the doctors pushed to give him Ritalin and then Adderol, which he started abusing in his teens and continued into adulthood. He told me he learned as a kid that the way to fix any emotional difficulty was to take a pill. He died of an overdose at 30. I write about this in my book Fifty Miles, the chapter called “Do No Harm.” I’m convinced that the use of these medications for ADHD contributed to his abuse of substances later in his life. I wish there was more research on the connection between ADHD, medication and later addiction.
I took a lot of drugs without knowing I had it. It's how we function I think. Trying to find things to make us feel better because we don't feel like we belong. I've wished for death since I was a kid because of how my brain won't stop...felt like torture when I was younger. I think there should just be schools for ADHD people instead of drugs. It can be a gift if managed properly. Really sorry about your Son. Hope he's found peace.
My mother was put on antidepressants 30 years ago. They behave too much like street drugs in that you build up a tolerance and have to have the dosage increased to maintain effectiveness. When the doctor can no longer increase the dosage, they switch you to a different medication. When they run out of medications, they start stacking the meds on top of each other. Today my mother spends most of her time in bed " because there's nothing else to do." My understanding is that for most folks the meds can be useful temporarily to help stabilize a person so they can deal with whatever is causing the depression but often it is not the best long term solution. I'm pretty sure long term use of the meds is what has contributed most to her current state. God bless you as you remember your son.
I always say to anyone in any medical situation medicine is only part of fixing the problem, i think thats what has to be educated on in general with medicine.
ADHD in a child is so hard not only on the person but also on the family the teachers and neighbors. Thank you Doc's for addressing this topic. There's no shame in this condition 😊
I have a daughter who was tested in 1998; spending hours in testing. She has ADHD, crossed eye dominance. Some test she was off the charts in intelligence, but scored badly in personal interactions. I had her tested before collage to see what she was more likely to succeed at. They suggested a community one. She was ok for a semester, then she stopped going to class and hid in the library. She has a steady job pays her bills, is still doing ok, but still no real friend unless you count Lego sets. I came back to add I love her expression say what is not what if.
I’m not a professional of any sort but from personal experience it is possible that your daughter may fall more into the autism spectrum than adhd. Another misdiagnosed difference
I’m pushing 60 and am miserable. My daughter sat me down and told me she thinks I might have ADHD and to take the quiz. In answered “yes” to many questions. I need to see my doc
Fascinating. Thanks. I have a granddaughter who is autistic and also has ADHD. She's on medication and is heading into her teens, so lots of changes. She's much easier to relate to these days - when she was younger and very impulsive/confused, it was heartbreaking at times. She responds well to very clear, gentle, non-controlling communication (she's level 2). I always try to ask her what she wants, too many people around her are constantly telling her what to do because it saves time. It seems to me that relating to her is like playing a musical instrument - I'm constantly trying to get the tone, volume and tempo just right. And then there's the melody. She's a fascinating person, I wonder how her life will turn out.
Reinforcement of executive skills is a must between 11 to 15. Hormones can change response of medication. Having that ground work helps processing skills and reduces frustration or return of impulsive behavior.
I'm distracted by the background, also had to play the video at 1.5-2x speed. I'm 26 & my psychologist said there's a high chance of ADHD after looking at past records & DSM-5. The psychiatrist did a full assessment haven't got my results back yet, but I was diagnosed with OCD before. I can hardly stay in a job for more than 3 or 6 months if I'm lucky, I always meet unreasonable bosses or toxic work environments, I tend to speak my mind and most bosses don't like this attitude. I'm also a 100% extrovert. I'm always late no matter how I convince myself that I take way less time than I actually do. I talk fast & interrupt others, I pace up & down while talking on the phone, and I talk a lot during shows/movies or always predict what will happen next, to the point my boyfriend or friends get annoyed. I get annoyed without spoilers, I need spoilers to watch a show. I've trouble sleeping at 4-6am, as I have a noisy brain that keeps going into different topics, sometimes to the point I get curious & need answers that I need to google immediately. I find it hard to read long ass messages, but such a hypocrite as I'll accidentally type super long & irrelevant text. Looks like I'm doing it again subconsciously. I procrastinate tasks I find daunting which is almost everything at my past working place, I would delay until the deadline to stay up till 3-4am. I constantly make mistakes even though I am sure I double/triple-checked. I've been punished a lot as a child for not paying attention, either peeling my scab off or talking to a classmate. My results speak for itself. I've been told I'm intelligent & have a lot of potential BUT...(something negative). I love gaming, but I take it too seriously & when I flare up because things didn't go my way or if my teammate didn't listen to me & made the game harder I will break my expensive mouse or start screaming. I love browsing online for nice things to buy, but my mom isn't happy that parcels keep getting delivered. I'm not yet medicated & I feel that nicotine/soda caffeine helps me sleep or focus. At the past working place, if the boss isn't around I would keep heading downstairs for a smoke break every 10-15 minutes (self-controlling) as there is CCTV which my pervert & cheating boss would check. I've tried quitting cigarettes during my current pregnancy which is working due to aversion & heightened sense. I had some art projects that I started in 2019 & forgot to complete in 2024. I really want to be on time, to hold down a job, to stop spending impulsively just because it makes me feel good, and to complete what I started.
You should do a poll to see how many subscribers joined after a diagnosis. I joined after a high cholesterol level, but it's interesting to hear about other problems. It's a fun and informative channel!
Great topic!! I was diagnosed in my late 30’s, no wonder I always hated school. Medicine helps a lot with my focus and concentration. But I heard that medicación may cause depression..
I was diagnosed when I was young. Tons of Ritalin, humiliation, and the back of the hand were the basic treatment. I got out of there and just tried super hard and developed my own ways of dealing with it. Now 50 years later, I was re-diagnosed with ADHD, 1 pill twice a day and it's much better.
I have A.T.E.S.H.D. Attention to Everything. Sometimes Hyperactivity. Disorder. With that said, ADHD is a rollercoaster. Sometimes it’s fun. Sometimes it’s scary. Sometimes you through just your hands up and scream.
I took so many online tests and they all said im high risk in adhd but i dont wanna tell my parents to take me a to a doctor or sm bc im scared theyre gonna say no ur fine i hav ethe same symptoms as u I also took multiple depression tests too some said i’m medium some said im high risk
Sorry but I came away from this being more confused than before I watched lol. Thanks for the interesting info such as it was presented anyway. Love you Docs.
I had a little child in my Junior Kindergarten who was really struggling with classroom norms, yelling, jumping up and down, even when it was unstructured play time. It got to the point where the other kids avoided playing with him because their blocks would be knocked over, their paintings added to by this child. Mother was distraught, could no longer dealt with the child etc. She called me every Friday night to discuss the child. The mother asked me to diagnose him, and I of course referred her to their doctor, who unbeknownst to me encouraged a trial of a stimulant. One Monday I noticed a huge difference, and was actually concerned the child was ill. By Tuesday, kid says to me “when did you turn off the spin machine?” I assured them that there was no spin machine, but they insisted that the room used to go around in circles which made it really hard for them. I called Mum, child had been on a stimulant for two days. She didn’t want to tell me to see if I noticed any change. Different child, different world for them both. As profound as giving a child glasses or hearing aids who needed them. ADHD is real, and impactful, and can be treated.
This was so hard to sit through……maybe I have untreated adhd? I wanted more information, seemed like she danced around the subject but no real answers. Explore……I still don’t understand it.
I squirmed in my seat in 1st grade so much I wore out the fabric of my uniform. 2 yrs ahead in school bc I was reading at 4, I was less mature and ADHD (diagnosed as adult). Constantly told 'so smart if she'd just FOCUS!" Did well in school but college v. stressful! Even w treatment, always worried i'm forgetting things (and usually am) and 'not living up to my potential' even when I'm trying so hard!
While in Post-op Friday the 21st of Oct I saw Dr. Zalzal walk by and since then I wish I would have yelled out your name. It was nice to almost meet you as I am a fan. It is also good to discover you are in my community performing your miracles.
"It took me 3 tries because I kept on getting distracted". Lol. Well at least you remembered a little because u finally completed the test. Story of my life. Kind of mastered staying somewhat focused by age 25. Weed helped a bunch but then I felt it was holding me back, quit and have rarely done it since. It was messing w my motorcycle racing that I so enjoyed at that time. But I do have fond memories. Was with my last employer for 20 years before retiring and generally enjoyed work even though boss was a jackass. Avoided the confrontations that many other work colleagues had w management. Months ago went on a super low carb Mediterranean diet resulting in many benefits: zero aches including "getting old aches and pains" (reduced inflammation?), great skin, more energy, no more 12 hr sleeping and naps, improved memory, and "unfortunately" even greater mental awareness resulting in me trying to tackle so many tasks simultaneously and most never got done. Also more anxiety resulting in more nicotine that I was managing in reducing. Some days smoking out of control. So now I'm using my old tricks, excluding the weed, and life is a bundle of fun. Still easily get distracted but not so bad. Incidentally have only lost 4 lbs on diet in 3 months. Severe SVT bouts earlier this year have not returned but pulse often below 60 bpm due to 25mg Metoprolol that cardiologist says I have to take. Would love to get off meds and nicotine. Thanks for sharing.
My daughter has ADHD and has effected her school severely I'd say especially that she's in high school now. It's a struggle for her every day. She even on medication and that only goes so far. Great video as always. 😘
There are several similar capital letter afflictions and people often say it is one when in fact it is another similar one. It is also interesting how our language has moved so that 'happy ending' now has a slightly different meaning.
Too many parents push the ADHD idea onto their children because their children don't behave the way they want them too. Kids don't pay attention, shocker! Kids have tons and tons of energy, another shocker!! Kids need guidance to develop discipline and focus. I hate it when parents and teachers want to drug their kids into behaving like robots. That said, I'm not suggesting ADHD isn't a real problem I'm only saying it's seemingly used, too often, as a method of settling rambunctious kids so that the adults can do what they want instead of focusing their time on their children.
In the late 1970s when I was a teenager a psychiatrist diagnosed me with what was then called Minimal Brain Dysfunction. That term was dropped at some point and the symptoms I had and still have are now considered ADD. I don't have the hyperactive part but I have so many of the other symptoms and I never liked taking the meds. Regular meditation, exercise, and therapy have helped the most over the years but it is still really challenging.
My partner was diagnosed 4/5 yrs ago, at 40yrs old, he is very clever but his short term memory is rubbish, we dont live together so makes it difficult for me to make sure he does things, He goes into, head in sand mode, like yesterday he said let's go out Saturday, well he has done this quite à few time, from Saturday morning last I heard from him, lots texts and phone calls nothing, I had food for tea and not a beep from him, now its Sunday 23 Oct , still nothing, he shies away from challenging things, He was given Vayvance, but lost so much weight terrible, but he was in the Army and in Bosnia, wondering if he also has PTSD ..?
I’ve done both dialectical, behavioral therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. I don’t have any high-priced items like I don’t drink alcohol and I’m not a metaphemdime
Patients should also be assessed for Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) by an audiologist. The two disorders share many common symptoms and one can easily be miss-diagnosed with ADHD when CAPD can be, or is also present.
There sure was a lot of information in this video . There is a lot of folks that have this but won't get help. They just deny it. You all have a wonderful week .
How do you separate similar symptoms labeled as ADHD, side effects of a psychotic medication, and or a bipolar diagnosis ? Are we dealing with a mix including generalized anxiety disorder, depression or hypomania?
So in the times before the last 20 years, what would someone with ADHD be diagnosed as having? This was great information, thanks to all three of you. It seems like ADHD and bipolar disorder can happen together?
Hi Greg. So it was called ADD with or without hyperactivity befkre ADHD. So anxiety and depression are associated with ADHD. A recent study found 1 in 13 patients with ADHD had bipolar disorder and 1 in 6 patients with bipolar disorder had ADHD. Thanks for watching and subscribing
i have adhd it sucks like sometime i try my hardest to focus on my school work but 15 minutes later im watching youtube its hard for me to follow rules or listen and even reading is like making me watch paint dry
Recently, I am hyperfocusing on this matter, Adhd. My brother has it, as he got diagnosed with both adhd and asd. So, I noticed that I relate to atleast 85-90% of the symptoms, Or even the basic/ surface level onces like being forgetful, being lazy, fidgeting alot, being distracted. I didnt get diagnosed and I am NOT self-diagnosing as I think I might overreact. During childhood, Studies were easy and I got average to good grades, just by doing the bare minimum. Now, I am in high-school and studies are becoming more complex and hard, like especially math and science. I dont have the guts to explain everything about this to my mom, as she most probably will brush it off. And, I also relate to the rsd and having a tough time controlling my emotions and such, or sometimes my friends say something jokinly and I would overthink about it and almost cry?? So, Yes, I have always related to these symptoms, and now that I am hyperaware of my actions/behaviours that I do daily, its becoming more prominent. Also, My brother got adhd and I know it's mainly genetic and I also notice these symptoms on my dad, but during my brothers birth, it was a premature birth I think, so, she (my mom) might relate his adhd and asd to that, and when I was younger, I was very hyperactive and did.. have a hard time talking normally like other kids, but then I grew out of it, and as I remember small memories of my childhood, I noticed that I relate to them symptoms, like hyperfixating, having little to no motivation, not feeling a sense of true purpose. I also might have anxiety issues, which I am sire I have gotten from my mom. I had feelings of anxiety and overwhelmingness since I was young, but it wasnt prominent. Also, I do get anxious easily, for like studies or any matter that happened like 4-10 years ago.
Growing up my mom didn't believe in any kind of mental health disorder or even the importance on mental health in general. Only within the last 2-3 years shes acknowledged that anxiety and depression are real . The only reason she started to open up about mental health is because my brother was diagnosed with autism and his twin sister shows signs of a possible learning disability. Im a high aniexty person and my mom recently acknowledged that it's possible that I have adhd. She mentioned that I showed symptoms growing up now that she looks back and honestly it makes sense. Every since I moved out for college I've struggled keeping a schedule and doing everything I'm supposed to even though I grew up under and incredibly strict household. I struggle to stay focused and keeping my mind straight. My mind moves a mile a minute while my body is a whole 5 minutes behind. It really hinders my daily life. Getting through this video with getting distracted by other things was basically impossible. I always need someone watching over me to help me focus it seems. I was to seek help to finally get a diagnosis for my suspected issues (possible adhd, aniexty, depression) but im honestly terrified of doctors no offense. I've only gone a few times in my life and every time it fills me with pure fear. So im not sure what else to do.
Hi hailey. Sorry to hear this. A doctor or a therapist can offer many strategies to help with the anxiety and the adhd. It’s normal to be nervous abkur treatment though. It’s worth considering as it can make daily life a bit easier. Wishing you luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Is ADD without hyperactivity a real thing? My son was evaluated for that when he was four. Turns out when his preschool (and his parents) learned to do timeouts and his environment was adjusted, he was fine. The fact that one pair of preschool teachers suggested he be evaluated affected the next stages of his life. He went to a private school for bright kids, a similar private high school, ended up with a strong education with a diversity of friends, and a PhD from Yale.
In Denmark, there has been a campaign regarding people who suffer from neurological disabilities like ADHD who can receive free of charge a lanyard that is green with yellow sunflowers to make strangers aware of the disability. It's often used, as I've noticed, in supermarkets where perhaps the cashier is not quite as quick as some customers would like. No doubt of its effectiveness.
I'm so disappointed you didn't bring up nutrition. At 36 years old my son agreed to try the keto diet. He lasted 2 months. He'd lost 20lbs, was more able to have a normal conversation, I actually saw him smile with that twinkle in his eye. His anger and frustration was not there anymore. Looking back on his school years he was fine in his morning classes but after lunch he was uncontrollable. He'd been put on meds and life was like night and day. Total change for the better. But it wasn't change. It was a temporary fix. This was back when they just was labeling ADHD and figuring it out. Another thought, could this be why there is such a problem with meth? This drug is getting problematic with, I believe, 80,000 deaths a year across the country. Most deaths because of the hidden fentinal drug, but you get my question. All due to over sugared, added chemicals in our Sad American Diet.
Anecdotes are not scientifically supported. Weight loss may help with confidence by easing social anxiety. Nutrition/weight loss does not change one's brain in the magnitude of lessening ADHD.
Hi Nancy. There is the possibility of some chemicals being triggers but sugar is not the cause of ADHD. Glad to hear the success with the weight loss though. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing
It’s important to know girls symptom’s are different from boys. I’m on the assessment pathway in the UK. Here we see the GP, then triaged by a mental health hub, then given an assessment with a team, and given a plan etc. I’m in my 50s and a lot my age were missed or told earlier we couldn’t have ADHD because we were girls (all the research was in boys).
my school therapist once asked me if i had ADHD I didn't know what it was and she told me how I may have it and that's what's making school hard for me I never told my parents cause I got scared but I told mom and she ignored me saying that only kids get that and my dad forgot I even told him about it I'm in 10th grade rn and it's getting me stressful I've done research about this just to try to confirm and yet my parents did nothing to help
Thanks very much for this, doctors. Is this the sort of thing I could keep in check on my own, with a decent insight, and not require traditional treatments?
My son was misdiagnosed, in young children, anxiety can present itself with the same symptoms of ADHD. Before medicating your child, get evaluations from a medical Dr and a psychologist that specializes in it. You’re looking for converging evidence
8:22 holy shit I have been feeling this exactly so desperately. I want to get my ADHD treated because I'm confident it will help with my depression and my anxiety, but psychiatrists usually just want to slap an SSRI on me and call it a month, which is so infuriating. Having grown up with very severe ADHD and having tried alternative treatment options, I know what sort of treatments will help me and what won't, but it seems impossible to get proper treatment because a lot of stimulant medication is controlled and nobody wants to prescribe it. If my brain could just be more organized and focused, I feel like it would change my life, literally improving on every aspect, but do I have 200$ to blow on another psychiatrist who's going to prescribe me another SSRI? No. Do I want to spend another month trying on a medication that ultimately won't address my core issues and won't help me? No. I'm just at a loss.
I was diagnosed with ADHD at 18 years old and I take medication and my rep payee is my family. I have no problems with relationships communicating wise. I have no problems working. I have a problem with focusing on one thing at a time when I’m being told to do multiple things even cleaning my so I don’t belong in jail I don’t believe asylums I’m on medication I’ve been on medication. since I was 18 it is part of my learning disability and I’m epileptic
Because that is where we work and we film before we operate. It is one of the few quiet places in the hospital at 7am. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Yes that part is tricky. Naming it is an attempt to classify, organize and treat effectively. Point well taken though. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Well people sadly do not accept people well that are different… story of my life. I have always been forgetful, impulsive, chaotic and inattentive. That made me the laughing stock in school, and constantly being called dumb or stupid. I did not have a diagnosis. Labeling is not the problem. Not labeling is. Why do you think so many with that diagnosis get depressed? Because it is not acceptable to be how you are and to work like you do. You are always wearing a mask and have nightmares over your next slip up - like forgetting the time and being late, not being able to structure the work day, talking excitedly about something you are passionate about not noticing you are boring the hell out of your conversation partner etc…..
My mom has add (I think she rly is adhd) and I struggle with conversations, tasks, watching or reading anything. I need subtitles and even then im constantly rewinding it, even when im trying so hard to focus on watching that part. I lose my thoughts when talking CONSTANTLY and have to have people repeat themselves a lot, or by the time I work out a response in my head, they’ve moved on in the conversation. I also space out a LOT so lost in my thoughts I just stare and don’t notice people talking to me. I also talk a TON and have my whole life but I was told it was anxiety induced. Could I have it?
Being a teenager and having adhd is hard. I get blamed for not doing things that are easy to do for other kids but not for me because I get distracted a lot .I struggled with this a lot with my parents because they thought I was slacking off and just being a bratty kid.
My son has ADHD and ASD. Really spins out. Sweetest, smartest kid.. he just has limited ability to control himself sometimes. Dextroamphetamine in morning has helped substantially with school, controlling impulse.
Someone, please help me. I think I have ADHD, I tried talking to my mom about it, but she keeps excusing it, saying its normal and that people with ADHD already aware, usually at least. I've taken online tests (I'm aware they aren't always correct) and I've failed them all, getting over six. I'm only 13, but I REALLY think I have ADHD. Please give me suggestions or something 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I would maybe recommend mentioning it to a teacher you trust perhaps, I wish I would have been diagnosed when I was your age. It would have saved my family and I a lot of struggle. I hope you get the help you need regardless. I recommend writing a list of things you struggle with so that if and when you are asked, it can help you to articulate everything you are going through and you can be properly assessed. Good luck.
Your channel is so professional, guess I wouldn't expect anything less than PROFESSIONAL! Don't soft peddle the "disorder"- IT IS VERY SERIOUS! Most often it is a BAD DIET- which can cause the "symptoms" to disappear, DRUGS are NOT always the answer! My daughter's school tried to tell me she had ADHD - she was in school since age 2 and was BORED with the material they were "teaching" and was not being challenged. However, my son with Epilepsy was tested by an incredible Doctor who specialized in childhood disorders. She explained to me what my son was experiencing, he was trying to balance a stack of bricks on is head whilst trying to absorb what the teacher was teaching. I refused to have video games in my home, but the Doctor recommended video games as one of his tools to increase his focus. He had a multi-layered symptoms, and his "executive function" was problematic. He was subsequently helped by and IEP in the inept school system who happened to be CLUELESS!!
What do you do when the doctor says your child is definitely showing signs but wont send in the recommendation and the schols don't believe you because they are not a problem child? Amd whe you call around other places they wont see you without a recommendation?
That is complicated for sure. Ask around and keep looking. Kids don’t have to be problem children to have this diagnosis. It can be very frustrating for parents Best of luck.
I'm elderly, but I wonder about having ADD. My son said he thought I did. I took stimulant weight control pills a couple of times many years ago. While on them, for the first time in life, my productivity at work increased as I was able to concentrate on my work, instead of my mind flying off in all directions. Also have many symptoms of Asperger's syndrome. I've learned to live with it, but it used to cause me social problems, etc. No need getting diagnosed this late in life I suppose.
2:28 What a shame a doctor misses the point that people don't generally have a "frontal lobe" that just naturally plans for them, and deals with the flaws. She got it totally wrong in this explanation.
We pay attention but only to things our brains find interesting, we are excited about what we get excited about, we interrupt everyone in conversations and can’t repeat what was just said to us We cannot follow directions if you give us more then 2 pieces 😮 We are messy and can’t find our things!
I've been struggling man... Do you know of any way to get free or discounted exams? I don't qualify for insurance and couldn't get any during open enrollment. 26... I had a psyc eval in high school but I was never allowed to read the results.
What type of doctor should I find, I think I may have ADD, my inability to do anything I’m not forced to is slowly becoming a problem for everyday life
@@TalkingWithDocs I don’t have a family doctor, I recently changed countries and the one I was in before doesn’t have much knowledge of mental health and only consider it to be an issue if it impedes daily life
Another great and informative video! 👍 This was very enlightening and some very important points were made. It seems like 20 years ago every hyperactive child was being diagnosed as having ADHD and prescribed Ritalin. Almost as an easy out for kids who were to hard to control. I knew many of these people as an adult who were still taking Ritalin whenever they felt overwhelmed. Is Ritalin still being used that much today? If a child is diagnosed with ADHD, do they need to be tested again as an adult? I would think there would be more medication available today than 30 years ago. Thanks for sharing another great video!
It should have been called achd. Attention control hyperactivity disorder. It‘s either you just can‘t focus very well, or nothing else exists but the task you are focusing on. Hyperfocus is energy depleting though-so you can‘t do that all day
Dr. Hierlihy: Can ADHD be brought on by a youngster falling off a stool & hitting their forehead on concrete floor, creating a "goose egg". No loss of consciousness, confusion, nausea, or vomiting. Would this damage the frontal lobe? That's a question for your guest.
Yes, it can be brought by hitting the floor and cannot be brought by hitting it as well. But on the other hand what is very important in this situation that there was no loss of consciousness, etc, that tells us that the forehead was much stronger than the concrete floor. That's why you are strongly advised to consult your floor manager to make sure the floor is not seriously damaged by that hitting, as if it is so there is a serious danger for stability of the whole building.
Hi Suzanne. No. This is not a traumatic injury. Having said that post concussion syndrome can be very variable. If concerned see your doctor please. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Off topic but, can you do a video of tfcc and ecu tears? I have 8 issues going on and want a third opinion. One doc says surgery the other said it's hard to tell if my ulna is too long causing all the issues. Mri shows everything, i am now in a hard cast.
Hello, I tuned in to this video with the interest of hearing what Medical professionals had to say about this disorder, and the jokes in the first two minutes made me turn off the video ...I say this respectfully. I didn't find it comical about "getting distracted while taking an ADHD test" or implying that Brian would be "off the charts" on an ADHD test. Those statements have a negative connotation to them, and came off as insensitive to me. It's frustrating to feel like the majority of the time my brain won't "shift gears", and at 32 years old, I'm really trying understand why it's so hard for me to break unproductive patterns in my life. Best, Nikki
Sorry to hear that Nikki. We didn’t mean to offend. We both have some ADHD traits and our channel has always been to provide useful medical information in a light hearted manner. We are certainly sensitive to the nature of the topics we discuss. Again apologies.
Folks, I have an idea. What if you took off the gowns, and sat down around a table and did the same thing. Or, maybe start off with the introduction of you all in gowns, then, just in every day clothes and chat over coffee or tea. Set the presedence, then get relaxed and get in to it. You can thank me later.
Come on folks, you know I'm right. They're genious and just think of their balls bringing forth Medicine, true medicine..... look at what they are doing, good God Man!!!!!!
That would be difficult as the only real free time we have to film is before we operate. It’s like herding cats. Good suggestion if we had more time and a studio though. Thanks for watching and subscribing
It seems in my case, that ADHD was present in my daughter from in utero. She was very active as a fetus - I had several instances of preterm issues, and had to restrict my activities for five months of the pregnancy. I was hospitalized on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New years for preterm labor. She was born in Februrary. Not a sleeper, crawled a month before most babies, walked at 9 months. Climbed everything to investigate all she could see. Began speaking at 6 months, talked in long sentences at 18 months. We had to put a child harness on her when walking outdoors or she would run off. At age three, she fell backwards out of a second story window. We then realized she was hyper. We took measures to protect her, and doctors advised us to engage her in a sport. After 3 years at age 10, she was quite proficient on the ice and became a national level figure skater and was headed toward the Olympics. At Nationals, she lost her focus for a split second and slipped. She was 13 and decided to switch her sport focus to stunt gymnastics. She was a collegiate level flyer at her university, a cheerleader, along with getting two Masters degrees. She now teaches high school, is a coach, a mentor and works tirelessly to help the disadvantaged. In her mid thirties now, she realizes she "was a handful". We love her and her special energy, and have learned how to respond over the years.
if i listen to i like trains all day does that mean i have adhd since stupily meme songs r easy for me to get addicted toclisten to while i play roblox or smth
I was hesitant to medicate my son, but the Pediatrician put it this way 'the jails are full of young adults that weren't treated as kids and found other ways to cope' well played doc, well played. He's an intelligent, kind, well adjusted 9 yr old now. Not one regret with our choice.
Thank you so much for sharing. Glad to hear it worked out. Thanks for watching and subscribing
So are art schools, dance schools, music schools, drama schools etc etc etc. creativity isn’t an illness
and the streets are full of young adults who are hooked on pills because they've been medicated their whole lives and adderal is basically meth.
They’re also full of kids hooked on meth because their adhd meds don’t hit the same anymore
For sure. Thank you for sharing. We may share some of the same issues with you
hey, I don't have my degree too but still a better engineer than most of i know but still having problems focusing on tasks. I have one question, did medication help at work? how is dealing with tasks ?
I was diagnosed with ADHD few weeks ago, and i'm just wondering about how medication would affect my life as i'm still not taking it
What did you hyper focus on ?
Best of luck FAB to you and your daughter. Thanks for watching and subscribing
CUT OUT THE MEAT AND DAIRY N I PROMISE U SHE WILL NOT HAVE DEPPERSSION
@@anteriamilner8434 how u know? R u her daughter?
I relate with this. I’ve grew up all my life with straight A’s , perfect attendance and honor roll. Now as an adult at 30, it’s all going downhill. I feel anxious, depressed and suspect I may also have adhd. My friends and family are also noticing and suspecting this as well. I hope I can get this all sorted out with professional help.
Diagnosed at age 40. I wish I had been tested as a kid. I did well in school but it was a struggle. Everything took me a lot longer than most people because I’d get distracted and have to re-read everything constantly. I wasn’t hyperactive in the physical sense but my mind is
For sure it’s a game changer. Thanks for watching and subscribing
the amount of times i had to re-read a page because i forgot where i was completely on the page.
I hear this all the time ADHD is so scary because sometimes you don’t even know if you have it if you don’t get assessed and screened… great topic..
Tricky for sure Alida. Thanks for watching and subscribing
So sorry to hear this Sheryl.
Agreed Tory definitely no shame. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Love that Cindy. Thanks for watching and subscribing
What is crossed eye dominance please?
Thank you all team work from Johannesburg South Africa 👍💕

I’m pushing 60 and am miserable. My daughter sat me down and told me she thinks I might have ADHD and to take the quiz. In answered “yes” to many questions. I need to see my doc
For sure. There is a lot of help available. Thanks for watching and subscribing
This is being aggressively investigated currently
Thanks for sharing Mike. Wishing your grand daughter nothing but the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing
You should definitely look into getting seen. We wish you the best
thats crazy i relate with like 90% of this. i ALWAYS went to school/work last minute i never knew why
You should do a poll to see how many subscribers joined after a diagnosis. I joined after a high cholesterol level, but it's interesting to hear about other problems. It's a fun and informative channel!
Glad you like it John. Great idea. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Great topic!! I was diagnosed in my late 30’s, no wonder I always hated school. Medicine helps a lot with my focus and concentration. But I heard that medicación may cause depression..
Hi H G. All meds have side effects for sure. Keep an eye on it and regularly check in with your doctor. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Glad to hear it Mike. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I have A.T.E.S.H.D.
Attention to Everything.
Sometimes Hyperactivity.

I took so many online tests and they all said im high risk in adhd but i dont wanna tell my parents to take me a to a doctor or sm bc im scared theyre gonna say no ur fine i hav ethe same symptoms as u
I also took multiple depression tests too some said i’m medium some said im high risk
It’s worth talking to someone about both issues. You can do that privately with your doctor or even start with a Counsellor at school.

Wow Trish thanks for sharing. Treatment can be absolutely life changing. Thanks for watching and subscribing
This was so hard to sit through……maybe I have untreated adhd? I wanted more information, seemed like she danced around the subject but no real answers. Explore……I still don’t understand it.
Sorry about that Debbi. More to follow. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Hang in there! You’ve got this
Diagnosed with depression at 15 anxiety at 50 am now 67 and have waited 1 yr for assessment, thank you for this helpful info

While in Post-op Friday the 21st of Oct I saw Dr. Zalzal walk by and since then I wish I would have yelled out your name. It was nice to almost meet you as I am a fan. It is also good to discover you are in my community performing your miracles.
That is very sweet Bora. Hope you are doing well. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Thank you for sharing T. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing
My daughter has ADHD and has effected her school severely I'd say especially that she's in high school now. It's a struggle for her every day. She even on medication and that only goes so far. Great video as always. 😘
Hope it keeps helping Eliska. Thanks for watching and subscribing
There is growing evidence for potential roles for sure. Thanks for watching and subscribing
There are several similar capital letter afflictions and people often say it is one when in fact it is another similar one. It is also interesting how our language has moved so that 'happy ending' now has a slightly different meaning.
Ha James. Very funny. Thanks for watching and subscribing
We agree parents need to be involved. It is definitely real and that is why diagnosis takes so long to make. Thanks for watching and subscribing
It's good you guys were there to get to the info. Love you guys!

Hard to say Suzi. Wishing your partner the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Patients should also be assessed for Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) by an audiologist. The two disorders share many common symptoms and one can easily be miss-diagnosed with ADHD when CAPD can be, or is also present.
Yes it is complicated for sure. Thanks for watching and subscribing

How do you separate similar symptoms labeled as ADHD, side effects of a psychotic medication, and or a bipolar diagnosis ? Are we dealing with a mix including generalized anxiety disorder, depression or hypomania?
It is complicated Erika. Best to get a proper assessment. They are related. Thanks for watching and subscribing
This is really valuable information! Explains a lot…

So in the times before the last 20 years, what would someone with ADHD be diagnosed as having? This was great information, thanks to all three of you. It seems like ADHD and bipolar disorder can happen together?
We called it hyperkinetic in the 70’s and 80’s as I recall.
Your assumption is incorrect.

Great video and subject matter.
Glad you liked it Linda.
I know people like this!
Yes Gretta. There are many different features and combinations. Glad he did well. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Thanks Docs! Good video and helped clear it up what it really is.
Glad you liked it Darlene. Thanks for watching and subscribing
You two are great fun to watch and listen to as well as very interesting. Thanks for all your efforts!

Yes Scott but it really depends on how much it is impacting your life. Up to you ultimately. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
No. I'm just at a loss.
i’m almost 15 and i think i might have adhd but we don’t really talk about that stuff in my family at all like mental problems idk what 2 do
I was diagnosed with ADHD at 18 years old and I take medication and my rep payee is my family. I have no problems with relationships communicating wise. I have no problems working. I have a problem with focusing on one thing at a time when I’m being told to do multiple things even cleaning my so I don’t belong in jail I don’t believe asylums I’m on medication I’ve been on medication. since I was 18 it is part of my learning disability and I’m epileptic
why are they in the OR talking about psych issues?
Because that is where we work and we film before we operate. It is one of the few quiet places in the hospital at 7am. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Nice thank you
Very welcome. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Michael Phelps has ADHD. Children suffering from this disorder should find inspiration in Phelps' success.
Agreed. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for watching and subscribing
thank you for this
You're very welcome!
I only made it 4:42 into this one. I may need to get a diagnosis.
People are all unique and different. Labeling differences with disorders is one of the biggest ailments of our time.
You may. See your doctor as there is help out there
Being a teenager and having adhd is hard. I get blamed for not doing things that are easy to do for other kids but not for me because I get distracted a lot .I struggled with this a lot with my parents because they thought I was slacking off and just being a bratty kid.
This is a great video
Thanks for watching and subscribing Neil
My son has ADHD and ASD. Really spins out. Sweetest, smartest kid.. he just has limited ability to control himself sometimes. Dextroamphetamine in morning has helped substantially with school, controlling impulse.
It can really help for sure. Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Thank you for the video it is helpful. As someone who has ADD though i find it very hard to watch it in full. Pace is a bit too slow
We get it. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Good luck.
Thank you, I'll try talking to a teacher.@@sweezymoney
Wow thanks for sharing your experience with your children. Hope they are well now. Thanks for watching and subscribing
What if it's more a response to anxiety- cause theyre similar.
Spoke too soon - thank you.

Im pretty sure I have adhd. I always felt like going and getting diagnosed was a waste of time and money. Is it something important I should do?
I'm elderly, but I wonder about having ADD. My son said he thought I did. I took stimulant weight control pills a couple of times many years ago. While on them, for the first time in life, my productivity at work increased as I was able to concentrate on my work, instead of my mind flying off in all directions. Also have many symptoms of Asperger's syndrome. I've learned to live with it, but it used to cause me social problems, etc. No need getting diagnosed this late in life I suppose.
Hi J. Never too late to at least get assessed. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
2:28 What a shame a doctor misses the point that people don't generally have a "frontal lobe" that just naturally plans for them, and deals with the flaws. She got it totally wrong in this explanation.
We would respectfully agree to disagree. All the best
@@TalkingWithDocs Why do you disagree ?
My son was tested for ADD. And as he was tested i kept saying ",i do that". So yup... i have ADD
Nice M. Thanks for watching and subscribing
We pay attention but only to things our brains find interesting, we are excited about what we get excited about, we interrupt everyone in conversations and can’t repeat what was just said to us We cannot follow directions if you give us more then 2 pieces 😮 We are messy and can’t find our things!
Yes but we all have something Camille. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I've been struggling man... Do you know of any way to get free or discounted exams? I don't qualify for insurance and couldn't get any during open enrollment. 26... I had a psyc eval in high school but I was never allowed to read the results.
We are in Canada so not sure. Sorry
What type of doctor should I find, I think I may have ADD, my inability to do anything I’m not forced to is slowly becoming a problem for everyday life
Start with your family doctor and then someone who has a special interest in ADD
@@TalkingWithDocs I don’t have a family doctor, I recently changed countries and the one I was in before doesn’t have much knowledge of mental health and only consider it to be an issue if it impedes daily life
Another great and informative video! 👍
This was very enlightening and some very important points were made.
Hi Vickie. Retesting is not unreasonable. Ritalin is still used but not first line. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Another great vid!!
Glad you liked it Marty! Thanks for watching and subscribing
It should have been called achd. Attention control hyperactivity disorder. It‘s either you just can‘t focus very well, or nothing else exists but the task you are focusing on. Hyperfocus is energy depleting though-so you can‘t do that all day
I’m 31 and I don’t know I keep getting angry and crying and Lazy don’t know where to find help from
Sorry to hear this. Start with your family doctor and go from there. There is help for you. Thanks for watching and subscribing
@@TalkingWithDocs Thank you.
Off topic but, can you do a video of tfcc and ecu tears? I have 8 issues going on and want a third opinion. One doc says surgery the other said it's hard to tell if my ulna is too long causing all the issues. Mri shows everything, i am now in a hard cast.
We can add it to the list for sure Tiffany. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
who else was already diagnosed but still did this test anyways😭😭
Ha many we suspect
I stopped paying attention what the hell is metrics I just want to know how do I know
Hello,
I tuned in to this video with the interest of hearing what Medical professionals had to say about this disorder, and the jokes in the first two minutes made me turn off the video ...I say this respectfully.
Best,
Nikki
Sorry to hear that Nikki. We didn’t mean to offend. We both have some ADHD traits and our channel has always been to provide useful medical information in a light hearted manner. We are certainly sensitive to the nature of the topics we discuss. Again apologies.
I look it like that: ADHD is not disorder, today's society and tempo is :)
Yes it all contributes
Thanks for watching and subscribing
awh, was missing info. 👍
No
How do I get diagnosed I'm 26 slightly dyslexic as well
Hi Chris. Usually starts with your family doctor and some screening questionnaires. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I came here a minute ago to find out if I have adhd or not, but now I’m hopping on playstation
Let her talk, we’re trying to listen.
Thank you for sharing Linda. Great story. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Causes?
Mostly generic Kelly. The exact causes are poorly understood. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I have (with the "help" of my family) self diagnosed with ADHD. Now what? I'm 58 years old.
See your doctor and consider the treatment options
