For some, fixed gear bike is cool, absolutely cool. But, you're not alone on the street, pedestrians and other road users has also the right to use the road so be respectful and don't angry on pedestrians.

the extend to which car dependency worsens traffic is extraordinarily apparent when a fixed gear bicycle is sufficient to easily and constantly outpace traffic on major roads.

It’s New York. They got more important things to deal with. Also prob not even worth trying to stop him with a car in that kind of traffic. I would just keep riding in that situation
For how slow and fluid NY traffic is it just makes sense.
Some people do wingsuit flying, others ride a bike with full speed in nyc provocing close calls.

I’ll be in NYC April 11th through the 15th ‘24. I want to rent a road bike and zoom through some boroughs. Any inside info would be appreciated( I don’t want to ship my bike so would prefer to rent or borrow
This is busiest!! Phew.. You don't know what busy looks like.. Come to my capital city Dhaka.. And cycle through FARMGATE, Mirpur, Shahbagh on rush hour.. You will know what truly busiest road, real traffic looks like :)

Length of handle bars?
While cycling through Manhattan, if you have not had at least two close calls in a day, you are not riding enough lol. I find it's usually more people walking (tourists are horrible about it), but you get a fair bit of cars that might clip you too. Can't blame it all on the drivers; there are a lot of factors to take into account, including drivers having to watch for so much going on around them, the responsibility/experience of the cyclist, and yet some drivers are just morons.
