Bike Messenger Riding Fast and Fluid Through NYC Traffic

  • Meet Cooper Ray the cyclist in this video and Terry Barentsen the camera man riding behind him.
Now you might think this was filmed as a once off, for some kind of stunt, movie or commercial, but in actual fact Terry is a freelance cinematographer based in New York, and often films Cooper, himself or various other people, riding around new York City for his TH-cam channel.
What makes Cooper’s riding style even more amazing, is he does not have any gears or brakes on his bike.
When it comes to braking, I’ve seen Cooper jump off the bike and slow down on foot, also I have seen him use his foot on the back wheel like a brake, but otherwise he just keeps riding.
Also the bike Cooper is riding is a track bike made for racing at a velodrome, it is a fixed gear bike with no brakes and no freewheel. Which means the rear wheel drives the pedals, so as long as the bike is moving the pedals are turning.
To all those who think this form of riding is reckless and dangerous, I agree, but that does not change the fact people all over the world ride like this every day, Terry just wanted to say “everyone crashes from time to time, even with brakes, we believe staying focused and aware of your surroundings is the best way to stay safe and having no brakes forces you to be in the present. These videos aren't made to encourage bad cycling, so please ride at your own risk and skill level.
    Thanks for watching.

It's as simple as it gets as a city rider:
Alway assume you are invisable to all the other participants on the road. And from that point of view, always keep your focus, make sure you visually cover all your surroundings at all times, and way ahead.

Actually the bike he is riding has a different braking mechanism, ie, you stop pedaling and stand, this makes your back wheel stop rotating and it skidds.

I rode a bicycle in Manhattan for about 20 years. At one time I was a messenger for a New York courier agency. Every rider at the agency had accidents, quite frequently. They also inflicted damage sometimes on cars, as a result of passing through a gap that was an inch or two too narrow. They (we) just shrugged it off.
For me the biggest risk was from other riders at intersections. The second-biggest risk was from police vehicles where cops would throw open the street-side door, in front of me. I went over the handlebars a couple of times in those situations. The cops didn't care.
The top earner at the agency referred to pedestrians as "robots." Being paid on a pure-commission basis encouraged an attitude in which everyone else on the road, especially pedestrians, was just an irritation that got in the way.
The preference for fixed-wheel bikes with no brakes was just a fad, or a fashion. As if messengers didn't need those civilized trimmings. I could often pass those guys, while riding a light bike custom-fitted with a Sturmey-Archer 5-speed (discontinued years ago) because, in some areas, Manhattan actually has hills. A fixed wheel is also slow when restarting after you have to stop (which of course does happen, although not shown in the video). Derailleur is limited because you can't downshift while stationary.
I was surprised to see the guy in the video wearing that jacket flapping in the wind. Liable to get entangled with a vehicle. Also creating air resistance.
I stopped riding for the agency when I got a persistent ache in my chest from breathing fumes. Each night I would soak in a tub and watch oil from car and truck exhausts rising from my skin to the surface of the water.
I gave up riding in Manhattan altogether when I had one accident too many. I pulled a tendon under my knee when I came off the bike as a result of another rider who was jumping a red light and rammed me. It took three months to heal.
    Just some thoughts.

Just charge him. You have all the evidence on video and you know who he is. The reason why he is allowed to cycle recklessly is because people "allow" him too. Drivers brake and pedestrian stop. He's just taking advantage of the situation that you will avoid (as much as possible) a collision.

After years of riding speed bicycles in traffic, that is what I learned:
"There is a fucking right moment to everything"
Riding a speed bike in traffic gives you a rush of adrenaline, especially when you drink coffee. I love it. But it needs to be balanced with good sense. You need a certain maturity to be in traffic.
1 - There is a hierarchy in traffic, pedestrians come before cyclists. Slow down when you ride over the crossing or run a red light. Riding over the crossing while people are trying to walk it is stupid and unnecessary...
    2 - Don't touch other people's vehicles. You don't need that shit.
    3. Go wild when only your safety is in the game.
4 - If you wanna show off, do it to inspire, not to scare. Be a beast or a gentleman at the right time.

It feels so good to ride in New York City! I did it for over 10 years (but couldn't ride quite like Cooper and his legs of steel)! I was more cautious because of possible dooring, I guess. It helps that much of the traffic (especially crosstown) is at a standstill or moving very slowly, too. Also all the one-way streets. But I always stayed away from buses! Happy riding, everybody. Give NYC a try if you haven't yet!
